Weekly Message Dear Parents It is lovely to finally see some significant rain today, after such a long dry spell. Our grassed areas have really suffered, so hopefully we will see some green returning to our playground. The rain adds to the challenges that we already face around our student drop-off and pick-up zone each morning and afternoon. Parents are reminded that it is a 2 minute waiting zone, and drivers are not permitted to leave their car. The parking rangers attended our school yesterday, and are returning over the next few days/weeks. They will be issuing fines for infringements such as double parking, cars left unattended in the drop-off zone and performing illegal U turns. Please obey all road rules in this area and be particularly careful in the wet weather. Also, could I remind students and parents that students should not arrive at school before 8.30 am. Weekly Message Dear Parents

It is lovely to finally see some significant rain today, after such a long dry spell. Our grassed areas have really

suffered, so hopefully we will see some green returning to our playground.

The rain adds to the challenges that we already face around our student drop-off and pick-up zone each morning

and afternoon. Parents are reminded that it is a 2 minute waiting zone, and drivers are not permitted to

leave their car. The parking rangers attended our school yesterday, and are returning over the next few

days/weeks. They will be issuing fines for infringements such as double parking, cars left unattended in

the drop-off zone and performing illegal U turns. Please obey all road rules in this area and be particularly

careful in the wet weather.

Also, could I remind students and parents that students should not arrive at school before 8.30 am. When a

teacher commences supervision at 8.30, all students should be sitting under our main COLA.

On a more positive note, we have had much to celebrate this week at our school.

Yesterday, I attended the State Award Ceremony for the Australian History

Association’s National History Challenge for 2017 held at NSW Parliament House.

This year’s topic was “Making a better World?” and I was there to witness Akira

Naumovsky from year 6, receive his award as the winner of the Stage 3 Section

and the Democracy section of the competition. Akira has also won the national

award, and will receive that later this year in Canberra. However, Akira’s family

and I were stunned to learn that he also won the major award for the NSW

competition of Young Historian of the Year! This is an amazing achievement as he

was competing with students from Year 4 through to Year 12, and I am sure that

you will agree that he is to be congratulated for this outstanding effort. In his entry,

Akira looked at Democracy and the Internet, and developed a ten minute

documentary around the topic. It is an outstanding and engaging piece of work, and

well worth watching.

Another high achiever from year 6 is Alice Van, who recently participated in the

Festival of Instrumental Music and performed at the Sydney Opera House. Alice played in the recorder section,

and performed three songs accompanied by the string section. Today in our assembly, Alice is to receive an

award in recognition of that achievement.

Aya Milton, who is representing us in swimming at the Pan Pacific games in South Australia later this year, is

holding a “Come as your Favourite Sports Star” Day on Thursday, to help her pay for her entry and trip

expenses.

Also at today’s assembly, we will be recognising many of our students’ achievements with the presentation of

more Bronze, Silver and Gold Certificates.

Yesterday, Stage 3 students presented their projects in our Annual Science Fair, and there was an enormous

range of innovative hypotheses, experiments and conclusions on display. I spent an hour wandering through

the many projects on display, and it wasn’t nearly long enough to take in the extraordinary amount of thinking

and work that had gone into the production of the exhibits.

Also on a science-related topic, on Tuesday, 3/4P displayed their Sustainable Houses projects, which featured

designs and models, which the students had developed around a sustainability theme. Again, there were many

impressive and thoughtful projects on display, and I congratulate all the students and teachers involved in both

displays.

This week saw us commence the annual Swimming School, and Mrs Roberts and Miss Gray report that it is

going very well, with all participants enthusiastically engaging in their learn to swim lessons.

On Tuesday we had our second Kindergarten orientation and there will be another one next Tuesday morning,

with our 2018 students learning in classrooms, while their parents receive information about our school in the

hall.

Next Wednesday evening at 6.00pm we are holding an information session for BYOD (Bring Your Own

Device). We invite all parents to come and learn about our plan for hand held technology for the coming years.

With devices already an integral part of our world, it is very important that we have a clear plan for how we

are going to include them in the teaching and learning of our students. While we will still be using traditional

learning methods, educators now have access to much more information and tools to access that information,

so we want to share with you how we plan to incorporate the use of devices into your child’s learning, and

discuss both your expectations and our expectations of how that process will work.

Finally, with the end of 2017 only two months away, I must inform you that we will be farewelling Miss

Lauren Paterson. Miss Paterson has been successful in gaining an Assistant Principal’s position at Berkeley

Public School, and will commence duty there in Term 1 2018. She has been an outstanding teacher and member

of our school staff, and will be missed by students, staff and parents alike. I’m sure you will all join me in

congratulating her and wishing her all the best in her new position.

Have a happy and safe weekend.

SRC Garden Opening! On Monday, our SRC members opened the quiet garden space they have been

working on last term. The students were all excited to have a new space to play

in. So far, the garden has been very popular! The SRC will be around to remind

students that this is a quiet space to play in and draw nice pictures on the

chalkboard. We hope you enjoy and respect our new playground area!
