Pets

Last week I saw Alfie, a lovely fluffy white poo-dle cross, whose owners think he is pefect, andindeed he is, apart from the fact he has some-thing missing! I first saw Alfie about a yearago, when he was a tiny puppy, and a physicalexamination revealed he only had one testicle. This is not unusual in such a young dog andmy advice is always to wait until they are fullygrown to see if it will appear. This is what wehad done with Alfie, however, the errant organwas still nowhere to be seen, so I would haveto go and find it!

In the foetus, the testicles develop in the ab-domen just behind the kidneys. As the animalgrows the kidneys stay where they are and thetesticles move backwards and pop into thescrotum at or just after birth. This means thatif the testicle is missing, it could be anywherealong this path, although the most commonposition is under the skin on the dog's tummy;nearly making it to the scrotum, just not quite! If a dog has a retained testicle it is very im-portant remove it, as they have a very risk ofbecoming cancerous.

Alfie was admitted to the surgery in the morn-ing of the big day, after a quick check-over tomake sure the testicle hadn’t made a lastminute appearance (it hadn’t!), and then wasgive a mild sedation to chill him out before hisoperation. About 40 minutes later he was putunder the anesthetic by me and the nurse, hisfur was clipped off and we scrubbed up for thesurgery.

First I went looking for the missing testicle. Ihad hoped that once he was relaxed it mightappear under the skin in his groin but no suchluck, I had to delve deeper! So, I opened uphis abdomen with a long incision stretchingfrom above his tummy button to his penis. (Ithas to be a big one to give me the best chanceof finding the testicle quickly and wounds healside-to-side not end-to-end, so a long oneheals just as fast as a short one! After somerummaging around I found the missing piecenestling next to the kidney, it hasn’t botheredto move at all! I removed it, closed up thewound and then took out the other testicle, thewell behaved one which had been where it wassupposed to be. The size difference betweenthe two was remarkable, the normal testiclewas the size of a small plum, while the re-tained one was barely as big as a grape, whichagain demonstrates how abnormal they areand why it is so important to get them out.

Alfie came round from his op fine, went homewith a wagging tail and now, a couple of weekslater is all healed up! He won’t miss his bitsand if he could talk, I am sure he would thankus!

Probably the most vulnera-ble and exposed part of thebody, the face requires con-stant care and attention tomaintain a flawless skin.Rejuvenating facials and agood homecare range willhelp to restore a vital andradiant complexion and giveyou a good make up base.

This method of semi-perma-nent hair removal removeshair from the root. New hairswill not grow back in thewaxed area for two to eightweeks. Almost any area ofthe body can be waxed, in-cluding eyebrows, face, bikini area, legs, arms, back, abdomen and feet. So thereis no excuse for being hairythis Christmas.

Shaping your eyebrows andtinting your eyelashes cancompletely change yourlook. Go to a beautician'sand get your brows shapedand eyelashes tinted profes-sionally. It doesn’t costmuch and take minutes. However, the first time youhave it done you must visitthe salon 24 hours prior toyour treatment to have apatch test.

A manicure treatment is notonly a treatment for the nat-ural nails but also for thehands. A manicure consistsof filing and shaping yournails, massage of yourhands and the application ofpolish. Choose a polish tomatch your outfit to com-plete your party look.

He won’t miss his bitsand if he could talk, I am sure he would thankus!

to a water supply. Water filled electric radi-ators therefore provide all the benefits ofgas central heating, without the problem-atic installation, servicing and maintenancecosts.

Unlike convector/panel heaters the electricradiators do not burn moisture in the air en-suring a comfortable and healthy atmos-phere. No storage period is required, theyheat up in just 10 minutes and are com-pletely controllable. Up to 7 heaters can becontrolled by 1 programmable room stat, thus making them an ideal alternative tostorage heating or gas radiators for wholehouse heating, extensions, apartments, commercial premises or loft conversions.

Electric heating! An attractive option

With gas prices continually rising, electricheating is becoming an increasingly attrac-tive option and growing in popularityamongst home builders, renovators and de-velopers.

The majority of people do prefer the con-ventional central heating radiator as it is themost accepted method to warm a room.Water filled electric radiators work on ex-actly the same principal yet require noplumbing, pipe work, boiler or connection
