Dear Woodburn Families,
School Board Appreciation Month
It takes strong schools to build a strong community. Our school board members de-
vote countless hours to making sure our schools are helping all students succeed.
They make the tough decisions every month and spend many hours studying educa-
tion issues and regulations in order to provide the kind of accountability our citizens
expect. Please take a moment to show your appreciation to our five wonderful
school board members this month. Send notes of appreciation to: Gail Gast, Execu-
tive Assistant to the Superintendent Re: School Board Appreciation Camas School

Wolf Pride Character Trait
During the month of January we are revisiting the September character trait, the
THINKING AND CARING HEART. However, this time we are going deeper with stu-
dents. We are extending our understanding of the thinking and caring heart to in-
clude EMPATHY. Empathy is important because it helps us understand how others
are feeling so we can respond appropriately to the situation. It is typically associated
with social behavior and there is plenty of research showing that great-
er empathy leads to more helping behavior. Empathy might be demonstrated in the
following ways:
o Emotional sharing: which occurs when we experience feelings of distress as a re-
sult of observing distress in another individual
o Empathic concern, which is the motivation to care for individuals who are vulnera-
ble or distressed.
o Perspective-taking, the "ability to consciously put oneself in the mind of another
individual and imagine what that person is thinking or feeling."
Join us in promoting Wolf Pride by having a conversation at home about empathy.
If you ever have any questions or concerns, feel free to call me 833-5860 ext. 78221 or email me at [email protected].
Make every day count!

WAY TO GO!

This is an exciting week for our students as
the gym is transformed into a giant jungle
of an obstacle course where they get to
climb, balance, tumble, and swing.
It is helpful to have some extra adult hands
and eyes with the younger grades to make
sure everyone stays safe. Please check out the time slots to see if you are able
to help with this fun activity by clicking here: http://www.signupgenius.com/

MORNING DROP-OFF AND AFTERNOON PICK-UP
It is imperative that students exit via the pas-
senger side of the vehicle. Cars are moving
in, out and around that area and it is not safe
for students to exit the driver’s side of the
vehicle. We realize that may require students
to climb over younger siblings/car seats but
we ask that you please respect the proce-
dures we have in place.
Student safety is our number one concern.
Thank you for your help in keeping our stu-
dents safe upon arrive and dismissal.

Coming Soon…SATURDAY, MAY 19, 2018
We’re still a new school and therefore a new PTO, but the PAWS group feels like the timing is
finally right to take on a SCHOOL CARNIVAL! Carnivals are an annual tradition at our neighboring
district elementary schools and we’re excited to finally bring one to Woodburn…but…we need
your help!
Food Vendors Can you recommend local food vendors who would be interested in working at
our event that evening?
Carnival Games Are your carpentry skills top notch (or even middle notch)? We’re starting from scratch and would love to be able to create
some of our own carnival games to be used for years to come.
Entertainment Vendors (bounce houses, face painting, etc.) Have you used entertainment vendors whom you would recommend for ele-
mentary-aged kids?
Auction Items We will be holding an auction on the night of the carnival as well, a fundraiser for our PAWS Integrated Art Program. Do you
work for a company that would be willing to donate to our auction event? The donation would be tax-deductible.
And lastly…ADVICE! For many of us, Woodburn is all we know…which means we don’t know school carnivals as much as we’d like! If you’ve
had positive or negative experiences at your previously attended school’s carnivals, let us know! What were your kid’s favorite things to do?
Which events did they skip? What would they really enjoy at the Woodburn carnival? Please don’t be shy – we’d love to hear your opinions,
advice, etc.
Contact Nicole Hergert at [email protected] with communication regarding any of the above items.
