The Strength of the Wolf is the Pack 3

Dear Friends of Saint Paul’s SchoolDuring 2019-20 school year, we celebrated the 101st anniversary of Christian Brother presence at Saint Paul’s School, which began in 1918 when the Brothers brought the Lasallian Mission to our beloved school. After being exiled from France in 1904 and having barely escaped with their lives from Mexico in the 1914 revolution, the Brothers purchased the school from the Benedictine monks of Saint Joseph Abbey in 1918. And the rest, as they say, is history. One of the first challenges the Brothers faced in 1918 was the Spanish flu pandemic, which roared through the school and community, claiming students, Brothers, and neighbors as victims. But the Brothers ministered to their students. Indeed, it was the Lasallian charism of caring for the students during this pandemic that helped win over the school’s constituents to these unfamiliar French Brothers. And the rest, as they say, is history.During the fourth quarter of 2019-20, the school was again challenged by a pandemic – COVID 19, which forced school closure for nine weeks. And while we responded with 21st century technology, it was our Lasallian creativity, caring, and competence that saved the day. Parents overwhelmingly gave “thumbs up” to our virtual school efforts during that time. While we had hoped that the pandemic would be history as we prepared for the 2020-21 school year in August, such was not to be the case. Thus, we marshaled herculean efforts in equipping our school to be as safe and secure as possible in order to welcome our students back to campus – a desire ardently wished for by both parents and students. And thus, on August 6, 2020, we began our new school year with on-campus instruction. And the rest, as they say, will be history. One of the disappointments of the school pandemic closing was our inability to trumpet the incredible accomplishments of the Class of 2020 – the largest graduating class in our history and one of the most talented in our history. Here is a quick snapshot: Î 10 National Merit Scholars for the Class of 2020 Î 4 National Merit Finalists Î 5 National Merit Semi-Finalists Î 5 National Merit Commended Scholars

Î 24 AP Scholars for the 2019-2020 school year Î 6 AP Scholars with Distinction Î 4 AP Scholars with Honor Î Scholarships for the Class of 2020 totaled $23,307,928.  Î ACT Average Composite of 26.5 for all 2020 graduates (compared to the

2019 State ACT Average of 18.8 and the 2019 National ACT Average of 20.7 as reported by ACT).

Î And the list could go on and onAnd as we open our new year among many uncertainties, we do so with a very strong enrollment, proving our school’s continued value, viability, and relevance. Your donations made a difference, too. With your help, Saint Paul’s continued to spread the Christian Brothers’ Lasallian education to the next generation of young men.

Know that your contributions are a significant help in making Saint Paul’s, not only a Blue-Ribbon School, but also a place where students “Rise Up” as men of God and practice the Five Lasallian Core Principles in their homes, on campus, and in their communities.

And now we call on you again, perhaps more so than ever with the uncertainties of the future. For Saint Paul’s to continue to thrive, we need your help.

Please enjoy the 2019 - 20 Advancement Report. We invite you to review the names of the businesses and individuals that partnered with Saint Paul’s to further the Lasallian mission and invite you to become part of that number.

Be assured that the Christian Brothers regularly pray for those who support our Mission of providing a human and Christian education to the young men entrusted to our care. We have done so for over 100 years – and we will continue to do so as the Lasallian Mission continues its second century in Covington.

Sincerely,Brother Ray Bulliard, FSCThe 17th Christian Brother President of Saint Paul’s School

"To be entrusted with teaching of the young is a great gift and grace of God" (Med 201.1). "God's word is powerful in touching hearts" (Med 180.2).

Annual FundSaint Paul’s School Annual Fund is conducted each year; it allows the school to achieve the lofty goal of a Christian and humane education to each child entrusted to our care. Unrestricted donations are used for major projects including classroom improvements, advancing educational programs, faculty compensation and continuing education, and physical improvements to our campus. Restricted gifts are funds directed to a specific program: tuition assistance, Wolves on Wheels, the Math Department, and campus beautification to list just a few. All donations are used to improve the school for the young men entrusted to its care, and if it were not for these donations, Saint Paul’s would not be the thriving educational institution it is today.

Jazz ‘N Roll 2019

Laughter and dancing filled the Briggs Assembly Center while guests enjoyed crispy fried fish and tasty south Louisiana fare by Bonanos Catering. Patrons shopped for original art by local artists, collectible sports memorabilia, and a plethora of handmade items in the silent auction. The Marching Wolves Brass band led a second line for the patrons near the end of the evening.Profits from this party-with-a-purpose are used to support a number of programs vital to the quality education of students, including Project Lead the Way, Advanced Placement Classes, and continuing education for faculty to name a few. Capital improvements, such as the newly renovated Benilde Hall, receive funding from this signature event, providing students with a college-style union area and the religion, Spanish, and media departments with state-of-the-art classrooms.

Celebri ty Dinner 2020

Each year, Celebrity Dinner funds Saint Paul's Renaissance Program which supports numerous non-athletic, extracurricular activities for the students. With high expectations for enjoyment and fun-raising, the theme of Saturday Friday Night Live was announced. Unfortunately, the Dinner, scheduled for Friday, March 13, was canceled the night before because of the outbreak of COVID-19.On the morning of March 13, The Development Team started the process of notifying all the table sponsors and caterer, The Lakehouse Restaurant. Preparation of meals and distribution was coordinated with representatives from each sponsored table and a drive-thru pick up service began. The Live Auction items were quickly established in an online software program so guests could bid on items from the convenience of their home.Several table hosts chose to hold their own "Mini Celebrity Dinner" in their homes with their table guests. Saint Paul’s School is thankful for our sponsors and table hosts who continue to support our Renaissance Program. We look forward to seeing you next year!

Benilde Hall Renovation

Keeping the Drive Alive!

Cost 4.8 MillionBenilde Hall was built in 1959 under the principalship/presidency of the late Brother Cassian Lange. The second and third floors were dormitories for 6th and 7th grades. The bottom floor contained study halls and recreation rooms. When Saint Paul's dropped 6th grade, the first two floors were converted into classrooms. The third floor remained a dormitory for 7th grade. When 7th grade was dropped, the third floor became the band room. When the number of boarders started dropping, the third floor was converted to classrooms.

Renovation of Benilde Hall was completed in the Fall of 2018. The Religion and Spanish classrooms on the second and third floors were extensively updated. Each classroom is equipped with a 70-inch monitor that is used for video presentations in addition to the standard 42-inch monitor for announcements and schedules. The first floor was completely

reconfigured which includes a campus ministry office, one classroom for English, another two classrooms for publications and videography, and a bookstore. In January of 2019, a PJ's coffee shop became fully functional with students from the Entrepreneur Class preparing and serving coffee. PJ's Coffee of New Orleans was instrumental in assisting us with this endeavor from conception to completion. Supporters of this renovation are continuing their five year pledge.

Reflection of Virtual Learning during the Spring of 2020

With the campus closure of Saint Paul’s due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and the SPS Online program fully operational, students and faculty are left wondering how this virus will impact the rest of their lives. Over a century ago, a nearly identical situation caused the school to respond to an outbreak, but the response looked much different than it does today.

For Saint Paul’s in 2020, this decision consisted of almost 900 students being transferred to an online curriculum so that they could stay home in order to prevent the spread of the virus. However, Saint Paul’s in 1919 did not have the available resources and technology to teach from a distance, so the students continued to attend school and were still taught by the Brothers. In January of 1919, just two months before the outbreak of the flu hit the New Orleans area, World War 1 ended. Starting on January 2nd in 1919 with the former rector of Saint Paul’s, Father Augustine, falling ill due to the flu, an outbreak developed and broadened at the boarding school until thirty students and six brothers were indisposed. The flare-up at the small school lasted about two weeks, and by some miracle, everyone at the school made a full recovery.

Unfortunately, the outbreak of the influenza virus took many Saint Paul’s students out of classrooms for almost the entire spring semester in 1919, seeing as many boarders did not return to school following the Christmas holidays as a cautionary measure in the face of the virus. However, the number of students steadily increased throughout the semester until it reached sixty in April. Although the Brothers had nearly no ways of instructing their students during this time, their prayer and trust in God’s plan kept the school alive and thriving.

The Strength of the Wolf is the Pack 23

The situation that Saint Paul’s students have been placed in during 2020 with the coronavirus epidemic is arguably much less of an inconvenience. The Online SPS program, which virtually simulates an in-class experience, was readily adopted by the students. The teachers asked students to take notes and emailed them for an assignment, they hosted online video calls that make it easy to teach a new lesson, they uploaded notes that the students must take in preparation for an assessment, and they posted online tests. All of these are ways in which Saint Paul’s can continue its Lasallian Quality Education Core Principle without face-to-face interaction. In addition, a message was sent out to all students and faculty fifteen minutes before the school day began with a link to the morning prayer so that the school community can practice Faith in the Presence of God during this tumultuous time.

To continue to live out Concern for the Poor and Social Justice, Saint Paul’s also initiated an online social media food drive to encourage the donation of funds and food for the Northshore Food Bank during Holy Week. The different responses to the virus outbreaks in the Saint Paul’s community 101 years apart exhibit just how important Lasallian education is to the school. If the Brothers in 1919 had not been determined to build up Saint Paul’s and fight through some of the toughest years that the school has endured, students in 2020 would not be able to enjoy the first-class Lasallian institution that is Saint Paul’s School.

Saint Paul's of fers s t rong Academic, Athlet ic, & Extracurr icular programs.

Saint Paul’s School honored the class of 2020, the 109th graduating class, with an outdoor ceremony on Saturday, July 25, 2020 at 8:00 am with a march up De La Salle Drive and a ceremony in Hunter Stadium on campus. One hundred ninety-five students received diplomas from Brother Raymond Bulliard, FSC, President of Saint Paul’s School, with the assistance of Mr. Trevor Watkins, Principal, Mr. Joe Dickens, Assistant Principal, Senior Counselor, Mrs. Renee Miller, and Mr. Paul Scoriels, Senior Level Chair. Brother Ken Boesch, FSC, Saint Paul’s Musician in Residence, served as the musician, seated under a tent, for the graduation ceremony.

Even with a light rain falling during the ceremony, the spirit of the event was not dampened. The graduates accompanied by their immediate family, wearing masks and maintaining social distance between other families, processed up De La Salle Drive to receive their diplomas. They then moved to Hunter Stadium where the students were seating around center field. Two major awards, the Sigum Fidei Award and the Visitor’s Award, were given to deserving students. Finally, the class of 2020 gave an enthusiastic rendition of the Fight Song and ended the ceremony with the traditional hat toss.

Saint Paul’s School held a special graduation ceremony on Saturday, June 6, in Our Lady of Peace Chapel on campus for three members of the class of 2020 who were joining the military to serve our country. Basic training for these young men began before the July 25 graduation ceremony, so they were honored before they were required to report.
