A service of compline, beginning at 9pm, will lead into a time of quietreflection. During the evening of silence, prayers, readings and music,the congregation will see the light of candles disappear one by oneuntil a final remaining candle is extinguished at 11pm.

Sunny Saturdays: Performance by the 'Brave Soldiers' musical trio,who will entertain you with a nostalgic mix of good old songs to suitthe occasion of the centenary.

Bring your items from WWI to have them appraised. Maybe you haveyour grandfather’s medals, photographs from the era, letters etc.Selected items will be invited back to form part of the WWI display onthe 14th September and loaded onto the Wokingham Virtual Museum.

On the outbreak of the 1st World War in August1914, the land on which the REME Garrison iscurrently based was the site of an Army RemountDepot.A special exhibition looking at the journey of the horses from purchase and the RemountDepot, to their transport and role on the Front. On until 31st August.

A talk on exploring your family history during the Great War plus from1pm -3pm a drop in advice session for anyone seeking to trace relativeswho may have been involved in the Great War.

Maria Hackemann, a specialist in Weimar German Kabaret'Lieder' songs and many melodic tunes of the early 20thCentury, performs songs from the era of the Great War.To book call 0118 978 1368

Wokingham Town Council in partnership with Wokingham Literary Society presents aTalk in the Town Hall on “Victor and vanquished are a-one in death” Writings from the FirstWorld War.Tickets available from the Information Centre in Wokingham Town Hall.

Visit the general Saturday Market to see traders dressedup in the WWI theme. Also as part of Sunny Saturdays,Paris Moon will be performing French café music between2 and 4pm.

Sunday 14th September

Heritage Day

Wokingham Town Hall

Find out more about the Town Hall War Memorial and some ofits names through the Heritage Memorial Trail display and throughthe Wokingham Remembers website, accessible in the Main Hallfor the public to look up other names from the memorial andlocally.

There will be a display of war memorabilia from local residents,costumes of the era and a feature on Cllr Henry Mylne, who wasWokingham Mayor throughout WWI. Photographs of Wokinghamat that time will also be displayed alongside their moderncounterparts.

Representatives of the British Legion will be demonstrating howthe poppy wreaths laid at Remembrance are created, and therewill be the chance for you to assist. There will also be a display onthe Home Front alongside Wokingham Historian Jim Bell’s, newbook on that subject.

There will be WWI themed children’s activities, including a jigsawpuzzle, quizzes and competitions.

Our civic memorabilia and virtual museum will also be available forthe public to view.

Join us for our annual Heritage Event. This year we are recognisingthe centenary of WWI with a range of themed activities and launchingthe borough-wide Heritage Memorial Trail (details overleaf).

All Saints Church, Wokingham

All Saints Church will be open for the public to view it’s warmemorial and display as part of the Heritage Memorial Trail.

Join them at 3pm for a concert by Trinity Concert Bandperforming music from the era based on a concert performedin Wokingham just before the war. Lasting around an hourthe concert will also include readings from sources of the time.

Also on the Market Place, the Women’s Institute (which was formed during WWI torevitalise rural communities and encourage women to become more involved in producingfood) will be selling their crafts and serving refreshments including tea, coffee and homebaked cakes.

Wokingham Town Team is supporting Heritage Day with a period inspired homemade craftsmarket and a Hog Roast by the Dukes Head.

Keep an eye out for WWI soldiers and others in period costume. Wokingham Theatre willhave actors in the Town Hall and Market Place promoting their February production “PrivatePeaceful”.

Wokingham Town Hall will be open for the public to viewthe Heritage Memorial Trail banners and war memorial itself.

Henry was one of 9 childrenand became a bricklayer. In1913 at the age of 29 hemarried Ada Bolton. Theyset up home at 20 MountPleasant, Wokingham.

He joined the Army at thestart of the war and servedin the 1st Battalion, RoyalBerkshire Regiment. He was killed atZonnebeke, near Ypres and his name appearson the Menin Gate. After his death Ada gavebirth to their daughter who was christenedFrances Zonnebeke.

Town and Parish Councils and Churches acrossWokingham Borough have joined together toprovide a Heritage Memorial Trail launching onSeptember 14th commemorating the Centenaryof World War I.

Exhibition stands have been created coveringover 20 memorials within the borough, offeringa permanent display of some of the stories ofthe fallen. These 'pop-up' mobile exhibitionstands are also designed to be displayedcollectively as a larger scale exhibition, availableto schools and community groups. Acommemorative brochure is available to guideyou around the trail and offer other stories.

We were delighted to have been awarded agrant from the Heritage Lottery Fund tosupport this project. It is felt that this trail willallow residents to become more aware of theheritage within their own community andbetter understand the contribution andsacrifice made by local people during WWI.

A story of a munitions worker during WWI. While the men went away tofight in the Great War, most women stayed at home, taking jobs intransport, on the land, and in factories; they coped and they survived. Apresentation in period costume by Gillian Stapleton, the Costume Historian.

Wokingham Library’s Poetry Writing group presents “Battle Lines”:an evening of poetry marking the start of the First World War.

‘‘Sgt Frederick White’ of the Royal Warwickshire Regiment, is recruitingfor King, Country, and Empire! It is August 1914 and he is in search ofmen aged 19 to 30, with stirring stories of the glory to be had in theservice of the King!’ A presentation in costume by the Select Society.

Wokingham Town Council in partnership with Wokingham ArtSociety present another Talk in the Town Hall on British Official WarArtists by Martin Smith. Tickets available from the Information Centre.

Wokingham Borough Libraries offer a number of reminiscence boxes containing items fromsocial history from the 40s to the 70s. These have been found to help trigger memoriesand facilitate discussions through handling and talking about the objects inside.As part of our WWI recognition two boxes are being created specifically on this era. Thesecan be booked to borrow by contacting Woodley Library on 0118 969 0304 [email protected]. They will also have display in September of otheritems related to the era but too valuable to go out into the boxes.Reminiscence Clubs meet at Wokingham Library on the first Thursday of the month10:30am and there are also clubs at Woodley and Twford Libraries.

Each year Wokingham Town Council opens the Town Hallto the public offering free access as part of Heritage OpenDays. Often these events are themed around an importantlocal or national anniversary.
