RIGHT HERE, RIGHT NOW

Timing is everything, nowhere more so than in drinking a bottle of wine at its absolute, show-stopping best. That’s where The Society’s annual blind Wine Champions tastings come in, gauging perfect readiness without fear, favour and – most importantly – sight of the label.

This is our 16th campaign, but it has been as fresh, stimulating and unpredictable as the 15 that went before. The stories are different, but always good news. Highlights of this year’s campaign are the quality of the 2015 vintage in Italy, a terrific showing for pinot noir and yet another for chardonnay, and a welter of well-priced Mediterranean-style reds.

The panel, who between them broke last year’s record with over 780 wines tasted, might have expected that some of these would be on the cards, but who could have predicted our first ever German pinot noir Champion? It all goes to show that you never can tell what will shine. Now we know. We hope you enjoy sampling this year’s victors, whether by the bottle or via eight specially selected Champion mixed cases.

CHAMPIONSHIP RULES

● The tasting panel stands at 11, comprising The Society’s nine buyers and scribes Janet Wynne Evans and Martin Brown. No session may take place without a quorum of at least five buyers.

● Each buyer’s contenders for Wine Champions are the result of strict preselection, taking into account readiness to drink and continued availability. They may include cask samples of new vintages as well as bottles from our cellars.

● All bottles are completely covered to conceal any clues to their identity. The wines are tasted like for like, with the only available information being a vague price bracket.

● Each taster may award two points for a Champion, one point for a close contender or no points at all. A Champion must score 70% or more of the available marks, either in its original category or at the final taste-off, wherein runners-up are retasted for further assessment.

● Tasting in stylistic flights doesn’t guarantee a conveniently varied winners’ podium. Different grapes shine in different years, as did pinot noir in 2016. This is reflected in the results, and an integral part of the Champions process.

● Premium Champions will be unveiled in our August Fine Wine List.

CHAMPION REDS

The Society’s Montepulciano d’Abruzzo 2015It’s always a special pleasure to see our own livery staring back at us once the bottle bags are removed, and this ripe, fragrant montepulciano – the first of six Champions from Italy’s outstanding 2015 vintage – was a popular performer. Vibrant and versatile everyday red. 13%ref WO-IT21471 £6.25 bottle £75 dozen

88 Growers Barossa Shiraz 2014South Australia experts Peter Lehmann Wines have both impeccable contacts and the talent to blend their growers’ fruit into a wine greater than the sum of its parts. A gorgeous shiraz, whose brambly aromas, sweet blackberry fruit and luxuriant vanilla notes seduced and charmed. 14.5%ref WO-AU18981 £6.95 bottle £83 dozen

Minervois, Château Sainte Eulalie 2014Laurent and Isabelle Coustal’s Languedoc wines have long been popular with members, and in 2016 no fewer than three of them have earned Championship status. This is excellent value for money, marrying dark ripe-fruit flavours with a freshness that cleanses the palate ready for a second glass. 13.5%ref WO-FC28821 £6.95 bottle £83 dozen

Salvaje del Moncayo Garnacha 2014One of the most exciting reds in our range, this high-altitude gem shows off the lighter-footed side of Spanish garnacha with satisfying and succulent red-berry fruit flavours and remarkable elegance for the price. 13.5%ref WO-SP10631 £6.95 bottle £83 dozen

Valpolicella Valpantena, Torre del Falasco 2015Continuing Italy’s imperious form in this year’s campaign, this delightful uncomplicated Veneto standard-bearer from one of the region’s smartest co-ops delivers a medium-bodied glassful of cherry-fruit charm at a splendid price. 12.5%ref WO-IT21201 £7.25 bottle £87 dozen

Weinert Carrascal, Mendoza 2010Weinert’s wines reflect the purity of their Argentine origins but with an unmistakeable nod to Europe, eschewing both high extraction and excessive oak. With rich dark fruit, velvety texture and mellow mature notes of cedar and leather, this blend of malbec, cabernet and merlot is on fine form indeed. 14.5%ref WO-AR3371 £8.50 bottle £102 dozen

Chinon ‘Les 4 Ferrures’, Domaine Nicolas Paget 2014Violet-scented, medium-bodied summery enjoyment from Nicolas Paget’s immaculately tended vineyards, and a beguiling ambassador for the excellent 2014 vintage for Loire reds. An assemblage of gamay, cabernet franc and a dash of late-picked côt (malbec) which adds weight and cohesion to the wine’s crunchy berry-fruit flavours. 13%ref WO-LO12251 £9.50 bottle £114 dozen

TALES FROM THE TASTING ROOM

Hot RedsAn embarrassment of riches under £10 can be found around the Mediterranean, uniting both character and value. This year, compelling evidence that 2015 is a very, very good vintage in Italy was reflected in some of the best-behaved new-vintage tank samples in tasting history and a haul of six Champions, which made a new hero of Valpolicella; and that was before another fine showing from Spain and the Languedoc – the latter a source of a stunning hat-trick of Champions (two red, one pink) from Sainte Eulalie in Minervois.

CHAMPION REDS CONTINUED

TALES FROM THE TASTING ROOM

Bordeaux and beyond…The presence of some excellent but, for the moment, politely aloof 2010 clarets made the Bordeaux session both gripping and grippy but relief came in the form of a sterling performance by our own Society’s Exhibition Pauillac from the charming 2009 vintage. Batting for the ‘beyond’ camp (Béziers to be exact), serial winner Domaine de Perdiguier again showed its mettle with cabernet and merlot, and we anointed our second ever Champion Chinon. It was heartening to honour Mendoza by garlanding a real character, and firm favourite with members, Weinert Carrascal.

Pierre Mansour, Toby Morrhall and Mark Buckenham

Valpolicella, Allegrini 2015‘Another 2015 Italian! ’ you may exclaim – just as our tasters did as the winners were revealed. In a vintage that proffered so many strong performances, this benchmark Valpolicella stormed through for its fresh perfume and sweet berry fruit. An unmitigated joy. 13%ref WO-IT21361 £9.50 bottle £114 dozen

Dominum QP Reserva, Rioja 2008The Champion Rioja of this year’s tastings swatted aside some of the region’s big names with its classic cedary and smoky complexity and ample red-cherry fruit. Savoury yet juicy, and thoroughly delicious. 14%ref WO-SP11001 £9.95 bottle £119 dozen

Wither Hills Marlborough Pinot Noir 2012The first of two Champions for New Zealand’s Wither Hills in the year The Society became its exclusive UK retailer, and the first of a cavalcade of pinot noir winners this year. A delightful redcurrant, plum and cherry-flavoured wine, interwoven with fine tannins and refreshing acidity. Now to 2018. 14%ref WO-NZ8071 £10.50 bottle £126 dozen

Mission Estate Hawke’s Bay Syrah 2014This immensely classy New Zealand syrah scooped a Trophy at this year’s International Wine Challenge and fended off all comers in its category here, too. Mouthwatering black-olive and blueberry aromas and a refined, savoury and peppery palate. A great choice for roast lamb. Now to 2018. 13.5%ref WO-NZ8871 £10.95 bottle £131 dozen

Minervois La Livinière Cuvée Cantilène, Château Sainte Eulalie 2013Extroverted but elegant, full-bodied but finely judged, the second of three Champions from the Languedoc’s Château Sainte Eulalie was a big hit with our tasters. We loved its delicious dark-berry fruit flavours, oaky complexity and overall class. Now to 2020. 14%ref WO-FC29311 £11.50 bottle £138 dozen

Brazin Lodi Old-Vine Zinfandel 2013This full-throttle bottle from family-owned Delicato Vineyards embodies what makes California zinfandel so irresistible. A full-bodied and indulgent wine which coats the mouth with its soft tannins and tempting flavours of blackberry, blackcurrant and mocha. Now to 2019. 14.5%ref WO-US6551 £11.50 bottle £138 dozen

Martin Wassmer Spätburgunder 2013Much sought-after, and often accordingly pricey, Germany’s pinots have been a source of much excitement in recent years. This, the first to attain Champion status, is a conspicuous bargain, with an entrancing perfume, subtle but rewarding red-cherry fruit and gastronomic ‘grip’ on the palate. Now to 2020. 13.5%ref WO-GE9101 £11.95 bottle £143 dozen

Domaine de Perdiguier, Cuvée d’en Auger, Vin de Pays des Coteaux d’Ensérune 2012Reverberating with ripe blackcurrant fruit, the 2012 vintage of this Bordelais blend from the warm south of France proved a popular choice. A polished, spicy and fruit-forward charmer from the Feracci family. Now to 2022. 13.5%ref WO-FC25671 £12.95 bottle £155 dozen

Martinborough Vineyards Te Tera Martinborough Pinot Noir 2013Brambly, fruity and easy-going but also showing the ‘forest floor’ complexity so prized in the top wines of this New Zealand region. This would be a fine choice for lamb and game dishes, and is very well priced for the quality. Now to 2017. 14%ref WO-NZ7651 £13.50 bottle £162 dozen

Fitou, Domaine Jones 2013Treading the line between refinement and robustness, this Languedoc red triumphed in an especially competitive tasting. Generous in fruit and in texture, this is a warming and rich wine for warming and rich food. Now to 2018. 14.5%ref WO-FC29251 £13.50 bottle £162 dozen

Lemelson Six Vineyards Willamette Valley Pinot Noir 2013A sublime Oregon pinot noir and one of the crowning glories of this year’s tastings. Its lovely cherry and redcurrant flavours, knitted together with deft tannins, seduced the panel with nigh unanimity. Drink this year and next. 13%ref WO-US6371 £17 bottle £204 dozen

The Society’s Exhibition Pauillac 2009Roused from a slumber in our temperature-controlled cellars to participate in the Bordeaux tasting, this impressive claret from the Rothschilds’ Lafite and Duhart-Milon vineyards impressed all who tried it. Still exhibiting the 2009 vintage’s fruit-forward character, but now complemented by the savoury complexity of a few years’ bottle age. Now to 2020. 13%ref WO-CM15011 £25 bottle £300 dozen

TALES FROM THE TASTING ROOM

A purple pinot patchIf there is a grape of the Championship in 2016, it’s pinot noir. Quite simply, it was unstoppable, yielding Champion showings from a satisfyingly international base, including New Zealand, Oregon and, for the first time ever, Germany. Burgundy, beware!

Saleta Moscatel-Sauvignon Blanc 2015This clever Spanish blend of limey, generous moscatel with a dash of sauvignon (to add precision and crispness) put in a first-class performance in our Aromatic Whites round. 12.5% ref WO-SP11321 £5.95 bottle £71 dozen

Vermentino Sicilia, Mandrarossa 2015Italy’s 2015 whites were every bit as successful as the reds, and our tasters thought this lavishly fruity but impeccably balanced vermentino from Sicily was far finer than it had a right to be at the price. 12.5% ref WO-IT21421 £5.95 bottle £71 dozen

Muscadet Sèvre-et-Maine sur Lie, Domaine des Ratelles 2014The 2014 Muscadet vintage was a gift to those growers who knew their vineyards inside out and selected the best fruit. The care and attention put into this example shone like a beacon in the tasting room. A lemon-fresh benchmark with racy acidity and an appetising salty tang that cries out for seafood. 12% ref WO-LO12261 £6.50 bottle £78 dozen

Chardonnay, Domaine du Bosc 2015A fine performance from this reliable, unpretentious southern belle. Its citrusy charm, imbued with an extra fruit charge in the 2015 vintage, and greater length of flavour than one would expect from a wine at this price, conspired to push it above the parapet against tough competition. 13% ref WO-FC30331 £6.75 bottle £81 dozen

Fiano Sicilia, Mandrarossa 2015The second white knight from Sicily’s excellent Mandrarossa co-op to merit inclusion this year. The fiano grape’s ripe peach and apricot fruit flavours are here in abundance, delivered via a mouthwatering seam of acidity. 13.5% ref WO-IT21441 £7.25 bottle £87 dozen

NEW The Society’s Grüner Veltliner 2015Members have welcomed our first ever Society-label bottling of Austria’s grüner veltliner grape with open arms, and it sailed through a competitive Aromatic Whites tasting with convincing panache. A summer-perfect white with delicious apple and peach flavours, and that classic pepper-pot twist on the finish. 12% ref WO-AA1841 £7.50 bottle £90 dozen

TALES FROM THE TASTING ROOM

Cool whitesAromatherapy is something you’d think might come in handy after a comprehensive trawl of just about every aromatic white variety from alvarinho to vermentino and viognier. In the event, we enjoyed it as we went along in two thrilling sessions that went from citrus notes to wild herbs to white blossom to musk, and even a touch of grape here and there. The haul of Champions was impressive. To distill diversity into digestibility it was, again, a great day for Anselmo Mendes’ terrific Vinhos Verdes and for the co-operative movement (always popular with The Society) with two Champions from Sicilian gem Mandrarossa.

Concha y Toro Corte Marcelo Limarí Chardonnay 2014Chile’s Limarí Valley is a remarkable source of taut, mineral chardonnays tailor-made for food and at prices that belie their quality. Marcelo Papa ferments this exclusive example in barrel before maturation on its fermentation lees to imbue a little extra palate weight. 13.5%ref WO-CE8441 £7.95 bottle £95 dozen

Anselmo Mendes ‘Muros Antigos’ Loureiro, Vinho Verde 2015He’s done it again! Vinho Verde guru Anselmo Mendes continues to take our Champions podium by storm, this year with two winning whites. This refined and adaptable Portuguese wine from the local loureiro grape was praised highly for its lemon-fresh piquant palate and fine length. 12% ref WO-PW5621 £7.95 bottle £95 dozen

Wither Hills Marlborough Chardonnay 2013It is something of a conundrum just how New Zealand’s Wither Hills manage to make such a fine chardonnay at this price year after year. Whilst the 2013 is perhaps the oakiest of this year’s chardonnay Champions, the wine wears its barrel age with style, complementing rather than dominating its mouthwatering green-apple and lemon flavours. 13.5%ref WO-NZ8421 £8.50 bottle £102 dozen

Pecorino Abruzzo, Contesa 2015 Contesa means ‘quarrel’ in Italian, but our panel settled convivially on crowning this characterful Abruzzo white. Refreshingly dry and moreish, with a floral bouquet and lovely depth on the pure, orchard-fruited palate, this is a top-class example of this fashionable variety. 13% ref WO-IT21241 £8.95 bottle £107 dozen

The Society’s Exhibition Limarí Chardonnay 2014Another fine-flavoured representative of Chile’s Limarí Valley, with minerality and freshness to the fore, supported by barrel-matured breadth of texture. It is worth decanting this for 30 minutes, as it was upon retasting that its harmonious palate really started to sing, making our panel realise just how good it is. 13.5% ref WO-CE8401 £9.95 bottle £119 dozen

Vouvray Demi-Sec Cuvée Clos de Vaux, Domaine Vigneau-Chevreau 2014This ravishing off-dry Vouvray is satisfying, juicy and balanced by a seam of freshness that carries its complex appley flavours through to a long and lovely finish. It will age for a good few years yet, but our panel’s consensus was why wait when it’s this good now? Now to 2025. 12.5% ref WO-LO11981 £10.95 bottle £131 dozen

Anselmo Mendes ‘Contacto’ Alvarinho, Vinho Verde 2015This stunning grown-up Vinho Verde, made from alvarinho (Spain’s albariño), offers a mind-boggling balance between lime-and-apricot fruit flavours and mineral finesse. A Champion for the third year running, not to mention a double Trophy winner in this year’s International Wine Challenge. Enjoy! Now to 2019. 13% ref WO-PW5661 £10.95 bottle £131 dozen

Dog Point Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc 2015The victor of our sauvignon blanc tasting is a testament to both this leading Marlborough estate and the region’s splendid, low-yielding 2015 vintage. Its elegant lemongrass-tinged aromas and persistent grapefruit flavours pipped its peers to the post. Now to 2019. 13.5% ref WO-NZ8641 £13.50 bottle £162 dozen

Gewurztraminer Les Princes Abbés, Domaines Schlumberger 2013Spicy, aromatic and tailor-made for flavoursome and spicy food, Alsace gewurztraminer is a unique joy. The characteristic richness and texture of the Schlumberger style soared above stiff competition in this year’s Aromatic Whites tasting. Now to 2019. 12.5% ref WO-AL12061 £13.95 bottle £167 dozen

TALES FROM THE TASTING ROOM

Chardonnay is cool – it’s official!A year for elegance, restraint and plain class, and from all corners of the globe, flagging up the sophistication delivered by cooler new world sites like Chile’s Limarí, which yielded two Champions. The exception that proves the best of rules and delighted all present not only came from the sun-drenched Languedoc at a very everyday price, but was an impeccably behaved tank sample to boot. This is what we call a result. There were some very patrician wines on show here, but the beauty of this grape, year after year, is its ability to deliver such pleasure at all prices; starting at just £6.75.

Thought bubblesDoes the best fizz have to be dry? Evidently not, as a unanimous Champion was made of a lovely, mellow Blanquette de Limoux, which made us think of strawberry tarts and confectioner’s custard.
