    SPECIAL REPORT

A sigh of obvi ous disappointment escaped

the capacity crowd of 5000 when it was

announced Kathryn Kuhlman would not be

conducting the meeting they were attend

ing—and that Kenneth Hagin would be

ministering instead. (This was at the New

York FGBMFI Convention in late Novem

    ber.)

Th e spirit of the group quickl y pick ed up,

however, at the teaching from God's Word

on the various ways on e can receiv e heal

    ing—through the manifestation of the

Gifts of the Spirit, as in Miss Kuhlman's

    ministry—through a special anointing of

    G o d ' s healing power—through one's own

faith in the Wo r d of God—etc.

Then it began. The anointing of God's

healing power was great. They walked out

of wheelchairs and pushed them back up

the aisles. Blind eyes were opened. Sores

which had covered one woman's face, ins

tantly disappeared. Brother Hagin said you

could tell where they had been as the heal

thy new skin took their place.

Th e highl ight of it all cam e when an esti

mated 1000 responded to the invitation

for salvation Brother Hagin gave at the

close of the servi ce. T o God be the glory.

    TESTIMONIESDearest Ken Hagin:

I first heard of your book s about 4 years ago...w hen Don Hughes from Broken Arrow

Okla. was here at the Asse mbly of God church and he preached about how to keep your

healing once rece ived . I had been healed of cancer just shortly before and was still having

some lying symptoms and t hrough his preaching and your books I learned ho w to keep

my heali ng. It has bee n nearly 5 years no w and they ha ve never found a cancer cell in my

b o d y since I was healed at a Kathryn Kuh lman crusad e. I have had ma ny check up's both

in the hospital and ou t, and am a dee pl y grateful pers on.

W e love you in Jesus

    11-10-75

My Dear Brother in the Lord Jesus,

I attended your meetin g in Tulsa, July 26 Saturday through Friday 31. Sunday

morning I went to church with two handkerchiefs (anoint ed) by the Ho ly Spirit. One for a

6 yr. old boy deaf and dumb. It has been kept on his body and when the fol lowing week

he heard music and threw both hands over his ears. N o w he turns on T.V. and claps his

hands to the tune a nd hears the phone and takes down the receiver but can only grunt as

he will have to learn to talk...

N ow the 2nd handkerchief was anointed by the Ho ly Spirit...for a young woman to

have her own child within a year. She has been maimed for 12 years and the Dr's told hershe could never have a child as her female organs had neve r deve lo ped . Wh en I gave her

the handkerch ief I told her to ke ep it on her bo dy and be l i eve God and it would be so,

that was August 3rd. No w she is three months pregnant and what a happy coup le. The

Dr. said you are pregan t all right but I can't be l i eve it. I told her and him what God did for

Sarah he had done for her.

    N ow I must add min e. I wen t to Tulsa wit h a cane, the 2nd nig ht I was in praye r lin e

and God healed my legs and I've never used the cane.

    TH€ T€ACH€R

6 t h in the Ministry Gifts Se ri es

EPHESIANS 4:11-1211 An d he ga ve some, apostles;and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some; pastorsan d teachers;12 For the perfect ing of thesaints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body ofChrist:

T eachers and teaching hold awell-defined and important placein the N e w Testament. Te achersare menti oned in all thr ee lists ofministries, or ministry gifts, in thechurch. (Eph. 4:11-12; I Cor . 12:28;Rom. 12:6-8.)

We separate these ministries todefine them, howe ve r one personcan stand in more than on e office. The prophet, the evangelist, thepastor, the teacher, all seem to

combine in the one office of apostle. The teacher and the pastor canunite in one man. As could theprophet and the teacher.

Acts 13:1 says, "Now there werein the church that wa s at Antiochcertain prophets and teachers...."Then it lists the names of five men.One was Paul. Another was Barnabas. This verse emphaticallystates each of these five men was aprophet, or a teacher, or a prophetand a teacher. Barnabas was ateacher—the 11th chapter of Actssays so. Paul was a teacher. He wasalso a prophet. He had re velatio ns.He rece ived the w h o l e gospelwhich he preached by revelation.(Gal. 1:11-12.) Both Barnabas andPaul then stepped into the apos

tle's office. They wer e called bythe Holy Ghost and sent forth tobe missionaries, or apostles to theGentiles.

    A ROVING MINISTRY

Pastors are settled men. Theylive in one place because they'reto have the oversight of the flock.A pastor couldn't ve ry well have

the oversight of a flock in Tulsaand reside in New York City.

A teacher does not ha ve theoversight of a flock. A teacherusually has a roving ministry—aministr y among the churche s andamong the flock of God. Like theapostle or the evangelist, he is onthe move. Apollos is an example ofa teacher who plainly traveledcontinually. (See Acts 18:27; I Cor.16:12; Titus 3:13.)

A DIVINE GIFTThe teaching ministry requires

a divine gift. One thing which hashindered our seeing what Godsays regarding this ministry isthat we 've left the impression Sunday School teachers are the giftHe's talking about. That could betrue, partially, but in the generalsense it is not true.

A n y b o d y wh o has knowledge—whet her spiritual kno wl ed ge ornatural knowledge—which wouldbe a blessing should impart it.A n d to the best of our ability weshould be able to teach that to oneanother. But God is tal king aboutan office as important as the officeof pastor—as important as theoffice of evangelist—which stands

in the same list—where men or*women are ca lled by God, set bythe Spirit of God, and endowed bythe Spirit of God to stand in thatoff ice and tea ch. T he re is adifference!

Ye a r s a go , I used to teac hbecause it was requ ired of the pastor to teach the auditorium class. Istaye d wit h their tradition—butoh , I hated to teach. I like d topreach . I thought you couldn't getanointed unless you were waving

your arms, shouting at the top ofyour voice, and spitting cotton. Il iked to preach and sense theanointing of God to preach. I hatedthat Sunday morning session ofteaching. I was so glad when thatclass was over and I could ge t tothe preaching business. It upsetme so that rather than think aboutit and be upset all the week, Iwouldn't even look at the SundaySchool quarterly until late Saturday night. I taught the class and it

grew a ll right—but I was so gladwhen it was through. I didn't havethe gift.

But one day—God gave me agift! And when it came down intom y spirit I was conscious it was inthere! I found out you can standbefore a small crowd of half adozen people or before a largecrowd, and never move, nevereven hardly lift your voice, nevereven hardly wave your arms, orlift your hand—but such a stronganoi nting of the Spirit of Godcomes that the Word of God comesflowing out of you like water outof a faucet. And what a blessingw h e n it comes! I know a little, nota lot, but a little bit about thisoffice because I 've stood in it nowfor some time.

A tea che r is not a teac hermerely by virtue of natural abilityor a natural inclination to teach. Insome cases the natural ability andinclination might provide a background for this gift God puts inyou if He calls you to teach tocome shining through. But it is not

just a natural something. There are a great ma ny teachers

in the church at large becauseContinued on Page 6

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsulfering, gentleness, goodness, faith, Meekness, tem-

perance: against such there is nolaw. Galatians 5:22-23

    Tby Kenneth Hag in

hi s fruit of the spirit is not thefruit of ha vi ng the baptism of theHoly Spirit. It is the fruit of therecreated human spirit.

The translators of the KingJames version capitalized the letter "s" in Spirit in this 5th chapterof Galatians. But W. E. Vine points

and pulled pears o ff that tree. A n dI never did see those pears growing anywhere else except on thebranches.

N o w w hy did that fruit grow outthere on the branch? Because itwas recei vin g somethi ng from thetrunk of that tree—the vine of thattree. A life which was in that v inewas flowing out into the branchesalso.

The fruit of the spirit is the fruit ofthe recreated human spirit— be-cause of the life of Christ within;because of the nature of God inour spirits.

nature. God's nature is life andlove. T h e love of God has beenshed abroad in our hearts.

Yo u can develop in love. Fruit, you see, grows. It doesn't comefully mature. John, in His FirstEpistle, talks about being made perfect in love. That means matur-ing in love—maturing in this fruit.I don ' t think an y of us ha vematured in it yet—but I thinksom e of us are mak in g so meprogress. Praise the Lord.

It has disturb ed a lot of folks thatsometimes yo u can see Christlike-ness in character in the lives of

out in his Expository Dictionary of New Testament Words that it issometimes difficult—particularlyin Galatians—to tell whether it'stalking about the Ho ly Spirit orth e human spirit. There is onlyone Greek word for spirit—pneu-ma. If it specifies Ho ly Spirit, weknow it refers to the Ho ly Spirit. But when a scripture just says"spirit," you have to determinefrom the context whether it 's talkin g about the Holy Spirit, or thehuman spirit.

Again , this fruit is not th e fruitof hav in g the baptism of the HolyGhost. It is the fruit of the recreated human spirit because of thelife of Christ within. I think this

can be easily proven by the scriptures. Notice what Jesus said.

JOHN 15:55 I am the vin e, ye are the bran-ches: He that abideth in me, and Iin him, the same bringeth forthmuch fruit: for without me ye cando nothing.

Where does the fruit grow?On the branches!Who are the branches? T h e Holy

Ghost? No! We are!Jesus uses the illustration of a

tree. We used to have a pear tree inthe bac kya rd of our little framehome down in Garland, Texas—alittle sugar pear—it made greatpear preserves. I've go ne out th ere

Th e Fruit of the Spirit is Love

The fruit of the spirit is, n umb erone, love.

I JOHN 3:1414 W e k n ow that w e h av epa ss ed from death unto l ife ,because we love the brethren....

John is talking about the newbirth here. He says we know w ehave passed from death unto life—that's spiritual death unto spirituallife. And how do we know it?Because we have this fruit calledlove. It's in our spirits! The Biblesays the love of God has be en shedabroad in our hearts by the HolyGho st. (Roma ns 5:5.) Tha t does n't

mea n b y the baptism of the HolyGhost. W e are born of the Spirit ofGod. A n d that's when the love ofGo d comes in.

Eternal life is the life and natureof G od. Wh en w e we re bornspiritually, we partook of God'slife, and God's love. In our fleshlybirth we partake of the life andnature of our parents. When weare bo rn of God, w e take on God 's

    ' I am the vine,ye are thebranches. .

some people who are not Spirit-filled, more than in some who areSpirit-filled. You see, the fruit ofthe spirit is for holiness, Christ-likeness in character. A n d that'swhat wil l convince people of reality. If you have spiritual gifts, which are not balanced out withChristl ikeness and holiness, i twon' t amount to too much.

T h e difference between fruitand gifts is: fruit is from within, ittakes time to develop; gifts arefrom without, usually complete asgiven. Fruit gro ws gradually fromwithin. Gifts come immediatelyfrom without.

Love is not a spiritual gift. Loveis a spiritual fruit—a fruit of the

    spirit. Paul sandwiched in whatwe call the Love Chapter right between the 12th and 14th chapters ofFirst Corin thians . A n d the 12th,13th, and 14th c h a p t e r s g otogether . To be balanced, w e needto stay in all of them.

I CORINTHIANS 13:1-3 (KJV)1 Thou gh I speak with thetongues of men and of angels, andhave not charity ( love), I ambecome as sounding brass, or atinkling cymbal.2 An d though I have the gift ofprophecy, and understand allmysteries, and all knowledge;an d though I have all faith, so thatI could remove mountains, andhave not love, I am nothing.3 An d though I bes tow all mygoods to feed the poor, andthough I give my body to beburned, and have not love, itprofiteth me nothing.

Then Paul goes on to g ive an ex pose' on love....

    I C O R I N T H I A N S 13:4a4 Love suffereth long, and iskind....

A lot of peo ple suffer a lo ngtime—but they're not kind while

they're suffering. T h e y just put upw i t h things and with peoplebecause they h ave to. Even pastorssometimes suffer along withfolks—but they're not v e r y kindwhile they do it. Sometimes a wifesuffers with her husband, and putsup with things, but she's not tookind whi le she does it. And viceversa. But love suffers long, and iskind....

    I C O R I N T H I A N S 13:4b-5a

4 ...l ove enviet h not; lo vevaunteth not itself, is not puffedup.5 Doth not behave itself unseemly, seeketh not her own....

That's a great rule to go by—Seeketh not her own.

"Yeah, but I've got my rights."As long as you're going to con

tend for them, you're not going towalk in the love of God either.

I CORINTHIANS 13:5-85 ...dove ) is not easi ly pro-voked, thinketh no evil;6 Rejoiceth not in iniquity, butrejoiceth in the truth;7 Beareth all things, believethall things, hopeth all things, en-dureth all things.8 L o v e never faileth: but

    whether there be prophecies,they shall fail; whether there bet o n g u e s , t h e y sha l l ceas e ;whether there be knowledge, itshall vanish away.

    Tongues , prophecy, w o r d ofknowledge—all those things willone d ay vanish. We won' t haveneed of them. There wil l be notongue talking in heaven, nop r o p h e s y i n g , n o w o r d o fknowledge or gifts of the Spirit

wil l be in operation there. Thosethings wil l pass away. But lovewon't! Love couldn't! Because Godis love! He's eternal!

    I think everybody, eve ry fewdays, if not eve ry day, ought tor e a d t h i s p a s sa g e f rom theAmpli f ied translation—and practice it! Let's go back over part oft h i s Love Chapter f rom theAmpli f ied translation. We'll beginw i t h verse 4—the expose' onlove....

Love endures long and is patientand kind;love never is envious nor boilsover with jealousy;is not boastful or vainglorious, does not display itself haughti ly.

It is not conceited—arrogant andinflated with pride;it is not rude (unmannerly), anddoes not act unbecomingly.

Love (God's love in us) does notinsist on its own rights or its own

    way, for it is not self-seeking;it is not touchy or fretful orresentful;

it takes no account of the evil doneto it—pays no attention to asuffered wrong.

Some peo ple think it's a point ofweakness to take no account ofevil done to you, to pay no attention to a suffered wrong. But itisn't. It's the God kind of love. An dthe closer you walk with God, themore His love dominates you, themore you'll be that way.

Le t His love dominate you. Ohno , not human love. Human love isselfish. Companions, husbandsand wives, need to let the love ofGod dominate them—not justnatural human l ove . Natural ly

you had a certain amount of physica l affection and attraction towardyour mate. But natural love is soshallow. It can turn to hatred overnight. The love of God won't dothat. Christians have the advantage over other folks. N ot onl y canthey love their husbands or wiveswith that natural affection, butthey can add to it this divine love. This love which never seeks it'sown, but seeks the other's welfare.

It does not rejoice at injustice andunrighteousness, but rejoiceswhen right and truth prevail.

Love bears up under anything andeverything that comes.

I like that. If you walk in the Godkind of love, you 've got to make iteve ry time. It bears up under anything and everything that comes.

(Love) is eve r rea dy to believe thebest of every person,

Some folks are always ready tobelieve the worst. I nev er was thatway. It just seemed as if I couldn'thelp it—something on the insideseemed to compel me to believethe best of everybody. The Biblesays that the love of Christ compels us.

...its hopes are fadeless under allcircumstances and it endureseverything (without weakening.)

There are nine gifts of the Spiritand ni ne fruit of the spirit. An dthis great love chapter is embedded between the two principlechapters on spiritual gifts. It implies those spiritual gifts can beoperated without love. But whenthey do, of course, it just doesn'tavail. It turns peo ple off.

Gifts of the Spirit should bebalanced out with the fruit of thespirit. That doesn't mean we'regoing to be perfect now. But atleast the fruit ought to be beginning to bud a little. It may taket ime to mature. But the thing thatencourages me is, I may not seethe full grown mature fruit—but atleast I can see some buds startingto put out. ~u

they have a natural gift for reducin g all knowledge to a science. An d the y'v e applied that gift toChristian truths. The i r naturalabilities are hig hl y trained—sometimes professionally, sometimesself-developed by a personal lovefor teaching. Often these teachersknow nothing at all about the bap

tism of the Holy Ghost. A n d sometimes when they do, they knownothing at all about really gettinginto the Word of God and deepspiritual truths, and nothing at allabout being anointed to stand inthat office. A s a result their teaching is dr y and divisive.

Just mark it down—the dryones are not called and notanointed. It's more or less naturalability c oming through them. Thisministry—this teaching gift—is

anointed by the Spirit of God justas much as the pastoral gift isanointed, just as much as theevangelist is anointed, and just asmuch as the prophet is anointed. Itmay not be manifest ed in such asupernatural wa y, but the under lying current is there.

The more I though t about it as Istudied and prepared along thisline, the more I could see thatteachers, probably more than anyother ministry, are responsible fordivisions which harass the body ofChrist. It's little wonder in someq u a r t e r s t h a t t e a c h e r s a r er ega rded wit h hesi ta t ion andsuspicion, and sometimes notwelcomed as they should be. Butw h e n a teacher creates division itsimply indicates a lack of an essential in that teaching gift andteaching ministry.

No teaching ministry in thepower of the Holy Spirit is dry, butit will convey rivers of livingwater. An d no teac hing empowered by the Spirit of God andperfumed with the love o f God willd iv ide the house of Go d. Weshould be interested in unity andnot division.

    TH E WATERER

Paul described the teachingministry as "watering."

    I C O R I N T H I A N S 3:6,96 I hav e p lan t ed , Ap ol lo swatered; but God gave the increase...9 F o r w e a r e l a b o u r e r stogether with Go d: ye are God'shusbandry,....

(Note: One translation uses theword garden rather than husbandry in vers e 9.)

N o one had ever preached thegospel at Corinth before Pauldid—he usually never built onanother man's foundation—so hesaid, "I ha ve plante d, Apol loswatered, but God gave the increase." Paul is saying here, and Ithink he puts it so aptly and sobeautifully, that teaching is watering.

A certain man wrote aboutgoing through the greenhouse of a

ve ry successful florist. He sawbeautiful flowers, a maze of color. This florist was known for certainachievements. The visitor commented about how beautiful it allwas, and ho w it must require a lotof time and kn ow-h ow.

Th e florist said to him, "Do yo uk n o w the most important individual involved in this wholeprocedure?"

"No," he said."The wate rer ," was the florist's

reply. " N o matter w hat we have ifthat man does not know just howto water these plants, it wil l all beruined."

Many a work of God has beenruined. Great evangelistic effortsh a v e gon e to naught—th oughhundreds resp onded to the cal l ofGod—because that watering process wasn't there to encouragethem to c leave to the Lord and tob e c o m e a beautiful garden forGod.

If you've ever planted a gardenyo u know that just because youput the seed in the ground is nosign you're going to get something. It has to be watered. If itnever got any water, you'd never

eat an onion, or pull up a radish. Ithas to be watered. Teaching iswater ing. So much has been lostbecause we haven't really recognized the impo rtan ce of the teachin g ministry.

When the watering process—theteac hing of the Word of God—is bya spiritual gift, it leaves the peopleof G od refreshed and revived. If itdoesn't, it just simply isn't in thepower of the Spirit.

It is said of Apollos, he "helpedthem much." (Acts 18:27.) When

the teache r water s the plant—theseed wh ich has already beenplanted, and has come up and isgrowing—he helps them much.Teaching should be a help—not ahindrance. It should be an encouragement—not a discouragement. It should put something intoyou—not take something out ofyou.

When teaching is in the powerof the Spirit, d iv is ion can becaused sometimes by unbelief and

hardness of heart. Unde r theministry of Jesus this happened.T h e y w o u l d n ' t a c c e p t H i smessage. Paul and the apostles raninto that. It is certainly true division can be caused because ofthese things. But, alas, alas, toomany times divisions have comein the b od y of Christ because someteacher just wanted to push somepet doctrine of his own which really didn't amount to too muchand wasn't spiritually beneficial.

A true teacher should shuncausing divisions as he shuns theplague. Except, of course, whereit's unavoidable over some greatfundamental issue.

We cannot com promise on anissue like the v i rg in birth of JesusChrist. No r on such a great issue asJesus Christ being the divine Sonof God, and bot h God and man.

    Yo u can't comprom ise on thefundamental prin cipl es of thed o c t r i n e of Chr is t ( H e b r e w s6:1-2)...of repentence from deadworks...of faith toward God...of thedoctrine of baptisms (When one isborn again he is baptized by theH o l y Ghost into the b od y ofChrist—then he is baptized in

water as an outward sign of an inward grace—then you can be baptized in the Ho ly Ghost and speakwith other tongues. A l l these baptisms are in this doctrine.)...of laying on of hands...of resurre ction ofthe dead...and of eternal ju dgme nt.These thing s are fundamental—and cannot be compromised. But alot of other petty things peop lepush are unnecessary.

I had a Baptist background andon e thing I liked about the Assemblies of God was that in churchgovernment they are a lot l ike theBaptists in that they have congregational judgment or rule inelecting a pastor. But many of thechurches I've preached in throughthe years didn't have that typegovernment. I wen t into the m andpreached truths we all believed. Ididn't try to correct them. If that'sthe w ay they wan t to do it—it's notgoing to keep them out of heaven.

I didn't go in to create divisionsaying, "N ow you folks have thewrong set up here. I'm going to tellyo u what the N e w Testament saysabout it. You're going to have toge t this kind of government. If youdon't, you're left out. You're noteven in the church."

People are teaching things likethat now—that you're go ing tohave to come out of eve ryt hing ,out of churches, and not ha ve a nykind of organization, because theBible said the ear ly church didn'thave church like we do. T h e y justhad it in their homes, so that's theway it ough t to be.

No! That's not the way it oughtto be. Wh y doesn't so meb od ythink? No wonder they just hadchurch in their homes. It was ababy church. T h e y just got started.T h e y couldn't have had buildings. They didn't have time to buildthem.

That's the way even the Pen

tecostal movement, Church ofGod, Foursquare, and Ass emb lie sof God got started, having churchin homes, backyards, front yards, haylofts, store fronts, and upstairsmissions.

"Let's go back to how the earlychurch did," some say.

No! Th ere 's no use going back tobeing baby Christians. We don'twant to get back and do everything the way they did it. W e wantthe same ex perie nces, yes . But w edon't want to do everything theydid. If we did, we 'd quit dri vin gcars and g o bac k to rid in gdonkeys and camels.

N o, w e cannot com promi se onfundamental issues. But w e cankeep from causing div isions asteachers over some minute point. The work of the teacher is to build

up—to edify the body of Christ.(Eph. 4:11-12.) Edify means buildup—not divide.

The church many times hasdivided o n elders, demons, womenand their place, and a lot of otherth ings which crea te d iv i s ion .That's just the devil playing onthese things to divide people.

The minist ry of the teacher isnot to tear down and divide—butto build up.This teaching available on cassette#S570 for $4.00.
