Undoubtedly one of the most significant regency style town houses in Falmouth, available on the open market for the first time since 1969. Currently arranged as 5 separate apartments, alternatively potential to reconfigure to one substantial home. Over 6000 sq ft floor space. Off road parking in grounds for up to 4 cars – south facing gardens.

HISTORY AND DESCRIPTION

Wodehouse Place was built around 1811 for Lord Sir John Wodehouse, hence Wodehouse's Place. Around 1820 Wodehouse was let to Alfred Fox. Almost 50 years later in 1868 he was to buy it and Wodehouse Place stayed in the Fox family for a further 50 years. Alfred Fox shared the home with his wife Sarah Lloyd (of the Birmingham Banking family). They received many noble guests from Countries all over the World. In 1846 they were host to Queen Victoria and Prince Albert during their visit to Falmouth. The family also owned Glendurgan at Mawnan Smith. Alfreds brother, Robert lived at Rosehill on Woodlane (now University College Falmouth) he also owned the Penjerrick Estate. After 1920 Wodehouse Place was bought by the Glazebrooks of Bangor in North Wales. During World War II the building was occupied by the British Army and used as a billet. They built a bomb proof intelligence bunker in the basement, still at the property today. Since 1969 the property has been the home of the Spear family and also used for holiday accommodation. A major refurbishment was undertaken in the early 1990's, the upper floors were reconfigured into four self contained apartments with owners accommodation to the ground floor. The East wing was also built at the same time. Wodehouse Place retains many original period features to include an impressive turning stairway with domed cupola roof light together with hardwood stair handrail with ram's horn finish. A handsome cast iron Victorian fireplace can be found on the first floor. The property also has many sash windows with fully functional window shutters, together with dado rails, pictures rails, and deep skirting boards. Wodehouse Place is approached via metal gates set on tall entrance pillars opening to an area for vehicular hardstanding. Also there is access to the private walled courtyard. The gardens are to the southern side of the property together with a paved sun terrace and pergola.
