President’s WelcomePhoenix College has provided outstanding teaching and learning experiences for over 92 years, resulting in our students’ success in the classroom, on the field, and far beyond . A rich history and a cutting-edge learning environment coexist at PC, providing students

with a unique campus experience that is second to none .

Intercollegiate athletics programs have long been a vital part of PC’s mission . Phoenix College student athletes participate in the Student Athlete Scholastic Success Program, receiving mentorship and advisement from coaches, administration, and faculty as they strive to reach their academic goals . The program has resulted in stellar outcomes:

The Phoenix College Softball team won the 2012 NJCAA Division II National Softball Championship, marking the 9th national championship for the Bears . PC Softball Coach Heinz Mueller achieved his 1,000th win, becoming one of only three NJCAA softball coaches to reach that milestone .

Four Phoenix College student athletes earned National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Academic All-American honors in 2011-2012 with a GPA of 3 .76 or higher .

Three PC athletic teams were designated NJCAA All Academic Teams: Baseball 3 .12 GPA, Volleyball 3 .29 GPA, and Women’s Basketball 3 .40 GPA .

During 2011-2012, 54 Phoenix College student athletes signed on to continue their athletic and academic pursuits at the university level .

We take great pride in the fact that Phoenix College is a place where people of every age and background come to discover new interests, explore new careers, or begin new paths . Here at PC, they find a combination of expert instruction, support services and unique opportunities that allow them to achieve great things . Thank you for supporting our outstanding student athletes in their academic and athletic pursuits .

Christopher Sagar Head CoachChris Sagar enters his Sixth year as the head coach at Phoenix College. Sagar took over the program in 2007 after spending five years as the assistant/goalkeeper coach for the

Bears. In his five years at the helm he has amassed a 49-40-8 record, finished four years in the top four of the ACCAC, and made appearances in one championship game and three semi-finals in the NJCAA Region 1 Tournament.

The 2009 edition with a 12-8-1 record had the best finish in the history of the program ending as runners-up in the NJCAA region 1 Tournament. In 2008, the team finished with a 13-6-1 record. In doing so they broke the school records for most wins in a season, most consecutive wins in a season (a stretch of 8), and most goals scored in a season (51). They also scored in 20 of their 21 matches.

Sagar’s teams have been named NJCAA Academic All-American Teams for the past five years running. In that time 7 bears have also received individual Academic All-American Honors. Sagar has produced 17 ACCAC All-Conference Players including the 2010 ACCAC Player of the Year, Kaila Cameli (1st JC transfer at University of Portland). He has also moved 28 other players on to four-year institutions in that time.

Sagar also currently serves as a Staff Coach and Goalkeeping Director for the Phoenix Rush Soccer Club. There he is responsible for the technical and tactical development of competitive youth teams as well as the implementation of a program of education and instruction for the club’s goalkeepers.

He has been involved in coaching youth soccer here in the valley for the past fifteen years, was the former Director of Goalkeeping for the State of Arizona Olympic Development Program and also spent some time as the Head Coach of the

Fort Collins Force, an amateur team competing in the W-League. There he led a team comprised of both current and former players from some of the nation’s top collegiate soccer programs.

His former college experience included a stint as an Assistant Women’s Soccer Coach at Arizona State University in 2000. There he helped the young program to its most successful season to date (14-7-1) and to round two of the Division I NCAA Playoffs. Additionally, he led the varsity boy’s Prescott High School team to Desert Sky titles in 1997-98 and 1998-99 and the state semi finals each year amassing a 33-6 record. Sagar was named the Region’s Coach of the Year for the 1998-99 season.

A native of Trinidad and Tobago, Sagar represented his country at the U-19 and U-23 (Olympic) levels playing in the Junior World Cup qualifying tournament in Guatemala 1988 and in CONCACAF qualifying rounds for the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona.

Sagar won a National Championship with Yavapai College in 1992 and earned the distinction of being named Most Valuable Goalkeeper at the National Tournament in both 1991 and 1992. In 1999, he received Honorable Mention on the NJCAA All Century Team. He finished his college career at the University of Wisconsin-Parkside. There as captain, he led his team to its first ever NCAA post season appearance. He still currently holds the NCAA II National Record for Lowest Goals Against in a career (0.32goals/game). He received the Arthur Ashe Jr. Award for excellence in Academics and Sport and was inducted to the University of Wisconsin-Parkside Athletic Hall Of Fame in 2001.

He and his wife Cara currently reside in Scottsdale.

Angela GomezAssistant CoachAngela Gomez is a 2006 Phoenix College graduate, who is here doing a second stint as an assistant coach for the women’s program. After Phoenix College, Angela went on to play

and complete her bachelor’s degree at Kansas Wesleyan University. She will be involved in all phases of preparation of the team both on and off the field.

“I am delighted to have Angela on staff again,” says head coach Chris Sagar. “She’s been successful both on the field and in the classroom and is an excellent role-model and mentor for our extremely young team this year”.

Neema DoroudianAssistant Coach/Strength CoordinatorNeema enters his first year on staff with the women’s program. Apart from helping on the field in both

practices and games as an assistant, Neema will head up the strength and conditioning for the bear’s both in pre-season and throughout the year.

Coach Sagar says, “It is great to have someone like Neema on staff, not only does he bring his knowledge of strength and conditioning and rehab to the program but the fact that he is a pretty knowledgeable and accomplished soccer player himself just adds to his contribution to the players and the program as a whole”.
