According to a recent University of Michigan study, 74% of dentists surveyed reported they were aware of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentists recommendation that children begin routine dental care by the age of one, or when their first tooth emerges. But the number of dentists who report seeing young children is far lower. Only 36% reported that they recommend their own patients begin routine care by age one.

Points of Light is a collaborative children’s oral health project with the mission of improving all infants and children’s oral health by connecting them with a dental home by age one. As dental professionals, we know the greatest reason to begin early oral health intervention is prevention, and the age one dental visit provides the opportunity to prevent very young children from experiencing decay.

Dr. Hale’s presentation will address the gap between awareness and implementation of the age one dental visit, and help you successfully Integrate infant oral health into your own practice.

AbOuT THE PrESENTErS

Dr. Kevin Hale is a 1988 graduate of Indiana University School of Dentistry and practices pediatric dentistry in Brighton, Michigan. He currently is the founding director of the ‘Points of Light’ project.

He is a past president of the Michigan Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, and past adjunct clinical professor in the department of Pediatric Dentistry at the University of Michigan. He is a Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry and

a Diplomate of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry. He is past chair of AAPD’s Council on Pre-Doctoral Education and the AAPD’s representative to Bright Futures on Infant Oral Health. He is a past member of the Board of Directors of the American College of Diplomates of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry, and the Board of Trustees of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry. He is also a past member of the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) Executive Committee for the Section on Pediatric Oral Health, and the lead author of AAP Oral Health policy from 1998 to 2008.

EVALuATING, cONTrOLLING AND PrEVENTING PAINPresented by Dr. John P. Gobetti, DDS, MS

Course OverviewPain Control – preoperatively, intraoperatively, and postoperatively, is a major patient concern. This course will provide the dental professional with the scientific basis for practical, clinically applicable pain control for a variety of pain situations and patient variables.

The pain control topics will cover evaluation, diagnosis, systemic considerations (medical history and drugs patients are taking), and specific therapy and techniques. A major emphasis will be prevention of pain via pharmacologic agents.

This will be a half-day lecture course. Dr. Gobetti will discuss patient history and systemic considerations, pain evaluation, diagnosis pathophysiologic basis of pain, and general principles of pain control. There will be a discussion of specific therapies, techniques, and pharmacologic agents. The case examples will summarize the course topics. Questions from the audience are encouraged throughout the program, and time will be allotted at the end of each presentation for additional audience participation.

Course ObjectivesAt the completion of this course:• Each participant will be able to evaluate the patient’s level of pain.• Each participant will know the pathophysiologic basis of pain.• Each participant will know the indications and contraindications of analgesic usage.• Each participant will be able to provide pain control for their patients.

John P. Gobetti, DDS, MS was a professor and director of undergraduate Oral Medicine/Oral Diagnosis at the University of Michigan School of Dentistry. He is board certified in oral medicine. He retired on January 1, 2007 and is an active Professor Emeritus. He graduated from the University of Michigan in 1968 with a DDS degree and obtained an MS in Oral Diagnosis and Radiology in 1971. He has been board certified in Oral Medicine since 1986. His 40-year academic career has been dedicated to teaching, research, and patient care. Jack

considers teaching “a privilege and an honor.” He has taught and mentored over 3,800 dental students, 1,200 hygienists, and numerous residents. He has had a one-day-a-week private practice in oral medicine and facial pain since 1968. He is semi-retired, changing his focus from graduate and undergraduate academia to providing continuing education courses throughout the state and country. He is active in dental consulting and forensic dentistry.
