KEY DATES

Literacy is an investment in the future

Enhancing literacy levels is essential to the economic development and to the well-being of communities worldwide. Literacy is key to break the cycle of poverty; it leads us to a stronger and healthier community with a more talented workforce.

Why is literacy important?

We strongly believe that literacy is the foundation of lifelong learning and education. It empowers people to reach their full potential and excel in school and beyond.

Unfortunately, there are 750 million people around the world that can’t read a single word and another 2 billion struggles to read a sentence. This reality has a negative social and economic impact, such as:

• Poor health outcomes• Welfare dependency• Gender inequality• Lack of social cohesion• Unemployment• Increase criminal activities

I submitted my video, what else do I need to do to complete my application?

If you have already submitted your video, that's great! There's no further action you need to take at that stage. If you are selected you will receive an invitation to finalize your registration as WLF Ambassador.

I'm interested in the WLF Ambassador Program, how can I apply?

You need to make a 30-second video introdu-cing yourself and telling us why you want to become a WLF Ambassador. The link to submit your video will be available from March 22 to April 2, 2021. You will receive the outcome of your application by April 26, 2021.

How are ambassadors selected?

Interested people can submit a 30-second video telling why they want to become a WLF Ambassador. We evaluate that each person meets the criteria:

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONSREGISTRATION

I'm under 16, can I apply?

If you are under 16, you cannot apply by yourself. You need to have your parents or tutor involved in the registration process.

I missed the EOI deadline, can I apply after April 2, 2021?

If you did not submit your video (EOI) between Mach 22 to April 2, you missed the opportunity to receive the invitation to apply for the program. However, this is a program that we run every year, so you are encouraged to participate in 2022.

If selected, am I going to get paid for my role as WLF Ambassador?

No, the WLF Ambassador is a volunteer role NOT a paid position in the organization. This is NOT a job opportunity. The program is an opportunity to access a platform to develop your leadership skills and cooperate with other literacy advocates around the globe to help eradicate illiteracy.

Do I have a personal trainer during the program?

No, due to a large number of participants, all learning materials are provided through our e-learning site. The modules are designed so that ambassadors can self-study at their own pace. The program coordinator can only assist you in answering very specific questions that are not included in the e-learning platform content.

TRAINING AND MENTORING

Is it mandatory to organize an event or activity?

Yes, to complete the ambassador program, you are required to organize a fundraising OR an advocacy activity within your community. It means the fundraising component is NOT mandatory, you can complete your report with the information about your advocacy activity.

Can you provide me with a computer and/or internet?

No, unfortunately, we are not in the position to provide ambassadors with these resources.

Do I have to travel to any of the locations where the World Literacy Foundation works? Do I need to attend any on-site events?

The 5-month program will be delivered ON-LINE. You are not required to travel or attend any on-site events. You will need access to a computer and a good internet connection.

What is the program structure?

The program consists of five self-paced training modules delivered through our e-learning platform. We allow two weeks for each module. Throughout the program, Ambassadors are required to work on fundraising or advocacy project in their own community. By the end of the course, you are required to complete a final report to assess your progress.

FUNDRAISINGFUNDRAISING

Can the World Literacy Foundation sponsor my own project or initiative?

No, the Ambassador Program is designed to inspire individuals to take action to reduce illiteracy rates worldwide. However, we do not sponsor or give grants to other programs, we work with limited resources and all of them are invested in our current projects.

Will I get a certificate from the World Literacy Foundation?

To receive the certificate of completion, ambassadors need to finish the whole program and organize a fundraising activity to support one of our literacy projects. Participants that conduct an advocacy activity will receive only an ambassador badge by the end of the program.

Is it mandatory to raise funds for the World Literacy Foundation? No, ambassadors can choose whether to focus on fundraising or an advocacy project. There is no requirement to raise a certain amount of money. Many of our past ambassadors have chosen to focus on raising awareness and advocating for literacy instead. We are grateful for all results, big and small!

Where the fundraising money from the Ambassador Program goes?

All funds raised during the Ambassador Program 2021 will go towards one of our literacy projects. Participants can vote to select the nominated fund, the options include Africa, Australia, Colombia, the United Kingdom, and the United States.
