About White Light

Founded in 1971, White Light now has more than thirty-five years experience in supplying creative lighting solutions to the entertainment and live event industries.

Our heritage is in theatre: our first job was the transfer of The Rocky Horror

Show from the Royal Court Theatre Upstairs to the Kings Road Theatre. Westill supply tours of that show to this day - as well as supplying equipment toshows of all types and scales, whether two lights to a school play or fringeproduction or a complete rig to the largest West End musicals. As we havedone throughout our history, we aim to provide lighting designers with thetools and technology they need to realise their visions.

While some still think of us as just a theatrical lighting hire company, ourwork now spreads far beyond this into every area where lighting is used aspart of entertainment. Our Sales team can supply anything from a single sheetof colour to a complete lighting rig - including installation, if required. OurService engineers maintain and support dimmers, lighting desks and otherequipment for theatres around the country either as required or through long-term service contracts.

We also offer a complete lighting service, with our Live Events Lighting teamable to design, specify, install and crew corporate, event or party projects aswell as supplying the lighting equipment itself and taking care of all of thehealth and safety and risk assessment documentation that such projects nowrequire. Through our Training Initiative training and education programme wework to ensure that those working in the industry are kept as up-to-date aspossible with the latest equipment. And where nothing exists to fill a particularneed, we make products of our own, notably our VSFX optical effect system,in use on shows around the world.

Put all of this together and you have White Light in the twenty-first century,a multi-faceted company employing over one hundred people in Wimbledon. Our online lighting shop, www.lxstore.com, offers online access to smalleritems from our extensive sales stock. While our website, www.WhiteLight.Ltd.ukis a comprehensive guide to both the products and services.

In these changing times, both at home and in the world at large, White Lightprovides a familiar touchstone offering superb service and support as it hasdone for more than three decades.

The Training Initiative

The Training Initiative is our popular training and education scheme, establishedas a way of sharing our collective knowledge with the rest of the industry.

The Training Initiative runs regular courses covering many areas of lightingtechnology that allow anyone involved in lighting - students, those involved inamateur theatre or those working professionally - to broaden their skills inparticular areas or their familiarity with particular items of equipment.

We also run a popular series of Schools Lighting masterclasses, introducingschool pupils and teachers to the possibilities offered by entertainment lighting.

Full details of scheduled courses can be found either on the White Light websiteor on www.LXstore.com, where you can book training online.

Changes of Phase Colour Codesin Electrical Supplies

As of 1st April 2004 the requirements for the colour coding of three phaseand neutral conductors in electrical distribution systems were changed toharmonise the UK with the EC colour scheme. Use of either old colourcoding or new colour coding (but not both) was permitted on newinstallations from 1 April 2004 until 1 April 2006. After 1 April 2006, all temporary and permanent installations must follow the new requirements.

Those responsible for supply, hire, planning installation and use oftemporary electrical installations and equipment, need to be aware ofthe impact of these changes and the possible safety implications toavoid potential electrical and safety hazards.

Control Protocols

DMX 512-AAn updated and reworked version of DMX512-1990, now an American National Standard (ANSI E1.11-2004). DMX512-A devicesare fully backward compatible with “original” DMX systems. The changes involve tighter definition of connector use and pin wiring, improvement of electrical protection, earthing procedures and someprovision for additional data transmission, allowing for the RDMprotocol. For simplicity referred to in all following text as DMX.

DMX is now universally adopted as the means of controlling a widerange of lighting equipment. Up to 512 slots of 8-bit data are carrieddown a single DMX cable. Each group of 512 slots is known as aDMX Universe. As automated lights have become more complex andthe use of LED products and Media Servers has increased, so has thenumber of DMX universes commonly required on a production.Consoles now routinely utilise some form of Ethernet based protocol, either proprietary (Strand Shownet, ETCNet2), or open source (Art-Net) to transfer multiple DMX universes on a single cable.

DMX is transmitted in a serial format and requires a high qualityscreened twisted pair cable. Electrically the signal conforms to the EIA-RS485 standard. A maximum of 32 devices on a line are connected in a“Daisy Chain” fashion. Data splitters are used to drive multiple data linesfrom a single source. The last device in each DMX line should be fittedwith a terminator to prevent data reflection causing errors on the line.

The 5-Pin XLR is the standard connector (although both legacy equipmentand new non-compliant equipment may be equipped with the 3-Pin version).

Pin 1 Data Link Common Common Reference (Screen) Pin 2 Primary Data Link Data 1 – (complement)Pin 3 Primary Data Link Data 1 + (true)Pin 4 Optional Secondary Data Link Data 2 – (complement)Pin 5 Optional Secondary Data Link Data 2 + (true)

The vast majority of devices do not utilise or require any connection to Pins 4/5

For further information on DMX refer to the ANSI standard documentor Adam Bennette’s publication Recommended Practice for DMX,available through PLASA (www.plasa.org).

DMX/Data SplitterAn electronic unit to drive multiple data lines from a single source. Splittersmay also incorporate varying degrees of electrical isolation designedto prevent a fault on one DMX line from damaging an entire system.

Line TerminatorGenerally a 120Ω 1W resistor fitted into a male XLR, connectedbetween pins 2 and 3 (Data - and +).

EthernetOne of a series of standards for distribution of data over a Local AreaNetwork (LAN) and based on IEE 802.3. Ethernet LANs may beimplemented using a variety of physical media, the most frequentlyencountered in entertainment lighting situations is referred to as10/100Base-T. This uses an unscreened 4-twisted pair cable, knownas CAT5, terminated in RJ45 connectors. More rugged screenedversions of the cable and connectors exist for temporary use asopposed to installation. 10/100Base-T Ethernet is distributed in a starformat from Hubs or Switches and is generally limited to runs of100m per segment. Wireless and Fibre Optic cable distribution ofEthernet is also possible. Protocols such as Strand Shownet, Art-Net,ETCNet2 and ACN “sit on top” of Ethernet allowing transmission ofmany universes of DMX data and other information down a single cable.

NodeA general term for a device connected to an Ethernet network, inLighting terms usually a device “decoding” DMX from the network(e.g. Strand SN110, Artistic Licence Net-Lynx O/P)

RDMOfficially known as ANSI E1.20 - Remote Device Management overDMX512 Networks, RDM allows bi-directional communication over aDMX512-A network between a controller and lighting fixtures. This willallow, for example, address selection, status reporting and parameterchanging on compliant equipment. The communication takes place onthe primary DMX data pair (pins 2/3). An RDM system will onlyfunction if the DMX splitters allow bi-directional communication. RDM equipment is designed to co-exist with other equipment that iscompliant with the DMX 512 and DMX512-A standards. RDM hasbeen developed as part of ESTA’s Technical Standards Program.

ACNArchitecture for Control networks. A suite of control protocols (generallyfor use over an Ethernet network), allowing for more flexible and adaptivecontrol systems to be developed. ACN has been developed as part ofESTA’s Technical Standards Program as an American National Standard.

D54A proprietary analogue multiplex developed by Strand Lighting and stilloccasionally found in older installations. Strand 500 series consolesprovide a D54 output, which can be useful when touring a show tovenues still using dimming controlled by this protocol. Protocol convertersare available to convert DMX to D54 (and other legacy protocols).

Beam Angles - Beam Size CalculatorThe beam angle is one of the most important factors in assessing thesuitability of a luminaire for its chosen task. But what exactly is it?

Beam Angle V Field AngleDefining the angle of a luminaire depends on knowing where the edge ofthe beam is. In the case of a profile with a hard focused beam, this isobvious. However, with a soft edged luminaire, such as a parcan orfresnel, where is the edge of the beam? In these cases the edge is foundby moving away from the very centre of the beam until the brightnesshas fallen to a certain proportion of the centre brightness. ‘BeamAngle’ is the angle where the edge brightness is 50% of the centrebrightness, while the ‘Field Angle’ is 10% of the centre brightness.

How Big?The formula to work out the beam size at any given throw is:

Beam diameter = distance x (2 x tan (beam angle/2))

This formula will work in any units, so if the distance is in feet thenthe beam diameter will be in feet.

If your light is hitting its subject at an oblique angle then things get abit more complicated and the easiest approach is to draw anelevation. There are also many good CAD packages that can be usedto visualise the beam within the performance area.

Beam Angle TableBecause we don’t always carry a scientific calculator with us, the following is a table of beam angles and beam angle factors. Simply multiply thefactor by the throw distance to calculate the approximate beam diameter.

Beam Angle Factor Beam Angle Factor5º 0.09 30º 0.5410º 0.17 36º 0.6514º 0.26 40º 0.7319º 0.33 45º 0.8320º 0.35 50º 0.9326º 0.46 60º 1.15

This table will work in any units; enter the throw in metres and thediameter will be in metres.

Beam Throw

Conversely, if you know the beam angle, and you want to cover acertain area, then the following formula will work out the distance theluminaire must be rigged from the subject.

Distance = beam diam / tan beam angle2 2

Light Output

Lux is an international unit of illuminance equal to “the direct illuminationon a surface which is everywhere 1 metre from a uniform point of 1international candle”.

Lux can be used to compare luminaires and their outputs at variousdistances. Total lux is influenced by beam, angle, lamp type and lampcondition, as well as optical engineering.

To work out the output of a luminaire at any distance, use the inversesquare law.

Lux = candela / distance 2

Rainbow Scroller CableThe use of correct cable is essential to help minimise problems in ascroller system.

The drawing below shows how to wire the cables correctly. Cablesuitable for Digital Colour Changers as Rainbow Pro Scrollers isavailable from White Light Sales.

Rainbow Power/Data Cable

The screen is only to be connected on the male plug’s end - on the female connector the

screen wire stays isolated (floating).

Generally the XLR connector’s housing are not connected to screen or signal ground.

Chroma Q range require the drain wire connecting to deal with staticbuild-up.

Note 2If the lighting console does not send a DMX packet containing theDMX channel the scroller is set to receive, the display will indicate that the DMX address is “out of range” by alternating the address with“H rc”. If this happens you can either choose a lower address in thescroller or re-patch your control desk (if possible) to send theappropriate DMX data.

Note 3If the address you are assigning is already used by some otherfunction of the scroller the display will alternate between the addressand “USEd”. This will stop when you chose a different address.

Scroll Making

White Light offer a full scroll manufacturing service for all scrollers.

However if you wish to make your own then please call forspecification and template information.

Electrical Safety – IntroductionUnder the Electricity at Work 1989 regulations it is the responsibility ofWhite Light as a hirer of equipment to ensure that the equipment is ofa safe construction and that no danger shall occur from normal usage. For dry hires, the final use of the equipment is, however, outside ourcontrol and it is therefore the responsibility of the “hirer” to ensure thatthe equipment is installed in a safe way and appropriate to its designand adheres to current regulations and best practice.

PolicyIn order to comply with such regulations White Light has adopted thefollowing policy:i) All equipment shall be of a safe design and construction.iii) All equipment shall be maintained to safe standards.iii) All equipment shall be tested on a regular basis.

The implementation of this policy shall be the responsibility of everymember of staff, with management responsible particularly for Part i)and the supervision of maintenance and testing of equipment.

As a hirer of a large volume of lighting equipment and associatedsundry items, most of which are of a highly modular nature, it isimpractical for records to be kept of every individual test.

White Light has therefore adopted the practice of every piece ofequipment being tested prior to dispatch from the warehouse for everyhiring, irrespective of the date of the previous test. A labelling systemis in use to indicate the month of test/dispatch.

MaintenanceUnder Section 7 of our normal terms and conditions of hire (see page C2

in the Terms and Conditions section) the hirer “shall at its expense keepthe Equipment in good repair, condition and working order, fair wear andtear excepted”. Also the Hirer shall on a very regular basis “Inspect, testand clean the equipment…”. White Light therefore expect that once the hirehas commenced the Hirer will ensure that the equipment is tested under therelevant regulations in accordance with the Electricity at Work Regulations1989 and the guidelines issued by the HSE. Within reason, White Lightwill endeavour to assist the Hirer to satisfy these requirements.

Rigging DataPlease note that the following information is provided as a guide only. Please consult manufacturers data for definitive figures. If in doubt seek the services of a qualified person.

A Moment for Reflection

It is unwise to pay too much, but it's worse to pay too little.

When you pay too much, you lose a little money - that is all.

When you pay too little, you sometimes lose everything, because the thing you bought was incapable of doing thething it was bought to do.

The common law of business balance prohibits paying alittle and getting a lot - it can't be done.

If you deal with the lowest bidder, it is well to add somethingfor the risk you run.

And if you do that, you will have enough to pay forsomething better.
