NIKE: the project SU

STAIN

1 person’s 1 week’s garbage.

My basic intent is to minimize impact of waste and enhancing lifecycle of boxes.

Challenge

30,000,000 cardboard boxes are used every 10 minutes in America. This is a shocking number. Can we create more friendly to the environment through increased efficiency and the utilization of reusable box system?

12 billion shoesin 2011.

Average number of Nike shoes sold each year 120 million.

Imagin numbers...

4 carts of cardboard trash while there were one of each kind of waste at recy-cling center.

Shoes boxes thrown away as is and also took up lot of space in waste cart.

(1 out of 5 stores were shoes stores)

Context Market Insight

Only one brand “ALDO” had unique packaging with string on the box so that consumer can take this box with ease right after the purchase.

Retail Research: Exisitng Box

Just all same retail and packaging experience from store to stores..

Target demographic is based on man of ages between 21~36 who are looking for style or comfort for shoes. Some are designers, students, account manager, and company president. Some say that they love shoes and collecting shoes of one main brand and 1~2 other sub-brands of favorite. Some were collecting shoes boxes accept the limited edition pack-agings. Demographics were unaware and careless of sustainability or sustainable packaging for collectable purchases. During interview, they obviously thought that boxes were supposed to be thrown away right after the purchase of shoes.

Employee brought out the shoes and zipper did not open up, I lost interest in trying shoes on because it felt like defect, also took up much time to bring shoes out.

Employee took a while to bring pair customer asked and ended up bringing box with different pairs of sizes.

Design Opportunity/explorations

Puma’s “the clever little bag” is well known for sustainable shoes packaging that saved 65% of paper compare to other original box packagings. It is easy to carry with having another extra reusable bag comes with it. Consumer can eas-ily take the shoes packaging with them.

In my case, shoes is like a trophy for collectors but this packaging can only carry one pair of shoes but he/she (collecting mania) can’t display the shoes at home. People who knows beauty of shoes buy many pairs of same designed shoes just because of color, design, func-tionality, limited edition within the brand.

In that case, this packaging can carry shoes and reuse the red bag but why can’t we make a packag-ing that can carry but also display the shoes so make stronger reason to keep the package and also make retail employees with more ease or sonsumers to make collecting expe-rience D.I.Y. also like the trend.

Getting hands on the packaging, cutting and pasting original and other box templates. Disecting and tearing apart the materials and perforations for explorations.

Packaging explorations

Needs flexible thin bio-plastic frame for the edges. Bag is too lose for tension to keep it’s box shape.

Possible 1

Possible 1

Needs more box shape for side of the boxes. There is problem with tuck-in to frame. does’t charge lot of space.

Possible 2

Need to keep its shape and modular system that connects the hanger together for display and other uses.
