COMEDY MAGIC

OUR LAST MEETINGOn Tuesday, July 2nd, The Wizards of Wichita held their monthly get together for the first time since I’ve been in the club, without a theme. The field was wide open for any type of performance and we were treated to quite a wide array of entertainment.

Kyle Magic (Brueggemann) was the emcee and he started off by performing a feat of jugglng which in-cluded a hackey sack style kick finale (does anyone else remember hackey sacks or am I just old)? He did some other funny emcee bits including a very funny mental-ism gag and also a balancing act with a leather belt and small, plastic pipe while reciting an original tongue twister poem.

Perhaps caught up in the spirit of the upcoming elec-tions, Ron Margolis did a powerful piece of mentalism.

Open Season Magic

He asked audience members to write down any item available at the grocery store and a price for the item on their slip of paper and place it in the wooden ‘ballot’ box. Off to the side was a large, brown grocery sack clipped at the top. After everyone deposited their slips in the box, Ron opened it and allowed a random au-dience member to select one from among the ‘votes’ cast, and what was selected was Frosted Flakes cereal, $2.79. Ron opened the grocery sack and out came a box of Frosted Flakes and attached was the receipt. It read $2.79. A perfect match!

Ron also did a great magic piece with a beautiful string of pearls which he removed form a jewelry holder, then he vanished them in a little cloth bag and they reap-peared on the jewelry holder that was covered and be-ing held by an audience member. A great effect!

Magic Bubba (Granville Brooks) took his magic act a step further than most. Instead of him performing a magic trick, Bubba was a puppeteer and ventriloquist to his little magician who was actually the one who made a cane dance between his little arms. Then, the cane came out, away from the puppet’s body. It was really quite good, but also funny and really cute too. Good job, Bubba!

Anthony (Tobias) Cortest had a sort of a ‘Ring’ theme with all his tricks. Tony borrowed Kyle’s gold ring for two effects. First, he took a long string and threaded it through the arms of his jacket which was laid out on the table. He had two spectators hold the ends and he went under the jacket with Kyle’s ring. When he removed the string form the jacket, it appeared as if Tony had just tied the ring on the string with a double bow knot. However, after untying the knots, the ring really was on the string. Then, he took Kyle’s ring and covered it with a small, black hanky and had Kyle hold onto it. When Tony whisked the hanky away, the ring had vanished, only to appear down below: tied onto Tony’s shoelace. Whoa!Lastly, Tony performed Tony Clark’s Paper Balls and Rings to Box: a slightly updated version of Tony Sly-dini’s Paper Balls to Box. Three rings wrapped in tissue paper vanish one by one and appear inside an empty cardboard box. Then, the rings vanish from the paper balls, only to appear inside a small, wooden jewelry box tied with a ribbon. A very beautiful and romantic piece performed to opera music.

WIZARDS AT MAGIC LIVE 2016Each morning there were Focus Sessions with perform-ers doing mini-lectures which included Daryl, Yigal Mesika & Jeff McBride). There was also an “Improv” focus session and the “20/20 Hindsight” session. Then there was the “Secret Class” presented by Mark Haslam. It was an amazing performance and display of masterful scripting, audience management and excel-lent sleight of hand.

The “Close-Up Experience” was also great. It featured Steve Valentine as MC, Bebel (from France), Charlie Frye, Jared Kopf and FISM Grand-Prix Winner Pierric.

The first Live on Stage gala show was a “retrospective” of acts that had an impact in some form on Steve Al-len during the 25 years of MAGIC magazine. It made

sense that he hosted the show which featured Christo-pher Hart, Juan Mayoral, Vik & Fabrini, Mark Kalin & Jinger Leigh, David Williamson performing comedy magic with kids and his “Rocky the Racoon”. Lastly, the Amazing Jonathan performed for the first time since he was given less than a year to live… almost 3 years ago. At the end of the show Steve Allen announced that MAGIC magazine would end after 25 more special is-sues, which will be in print only.

The second gala show was hosted by Mark Kornhaus-er and it was opened by Joseph Gabriel followed by a hauntingly beautiful performance by Axel Adlercreutz from Sweden, performing his 3-legged routine all while sitting in a chair. Also on the show were Marco Zoppi performing soap bubbles, FISM winners Thommy Ten

& Amélie performing their clairvoyant mentalism act, Rafael, Tom Burgoon, Cheng Min Lee performing his FISM winning manipulation act and Raymond Crowe doing his hand shadows act.

Oh, by the way, the lecture notes that were handed out each day were a beautiful FULL printed magazine! On the dealer’s side I had the impression that a handful of books were the highlight of the convention as almost everyone I saw carried one or more under their arm: Da-vid Kaye’s “Super Sized Silly”, John Bannon’s “Men-talissimo”, John Lovick’s “The Performance Pieces & Divertissements of the Famous Handsome Jack etc.”, and Gene Anderson’s “Pure GENEius”.
