A place where there isnt any trouble... A magical place, where dreams really do come true. There must be, Ive been there! Its not a place you can get to by a boat or a train. Its far, far away... Beyond the moon, behind the rain...

OPTIMISTIC VOICES IS PLAYED WHILE SHE SPEAKS.

Scene 2

MUNCHKIN LAND. A HOUSE IS PAINTED AT THE BACK WITH THE LEGS OF THE WICKED WITH OF THE EAST SHOWING AT THE BOTTOM. GLINDA STANDS STAGE CENTRE. THE MUNCHKINS HIDE GLINDA WITH FLOWERS AND REVEAL GLINDA AS SHE TURNS AROUND.DorothyToto, Ive a feeling were not in Kansas anymore. We must be over the rainbow.

DOROTHY TURNS AROUND AND SEES GLINDADorothyNow I know were not in Kansas.

GlindaAre you a good witch, or a bad witch?

DorothyWho me? Why I am not a witch at all. Im Dorothy Gale from Kansas.

GlindaWell, Im a little muddled. You see the munchkins called me because a new witch has just dropped a house on the Wicked Witch of the East. And so what the munchkins want to know is. Are you a good witch or a bad witch?

Dorothy I have told you, I am not a witch! Witches are old and ugly . (a munchkin laughs) What was that?GlindaThe munchkins. They are laughing because I am a Witch. Im Glinda, the Good Witch of the North.

DorothyYou are? I have never heard of a good witch before. What exactly are munchkins?

GlindaThey are the little people who live in this land. This is Munchkin Land, and you are their hero my dear. Its alright you may all come out now and thank the young lady who fell from the star.

She fell from the sky, she fell very far

And Kansas she says is the name of the star.

MunchkinsKansas she says is the name of the star.

GlindaShe brings you good news, oh havent you heard?

When she fell out of Kansas, a miracle occurred.DorothyIt really was no miracle what happened was just this:

The wind began to switch - the house to pitch,

And suddenly the hinges started to unhitch.

Just then, the witch to satisfy an itch,

Went flying on her broomstick thumbing for a hitch.

Munchkin 1And oh, what happened then was rich.

Munchkin 2We thank you very sweetly, for doing it so neatly

Munchkin 3Youve killed her so completely, that we thank you very sweetly.

GlindaLet the joyous news be spread

The wicked old witch at last is DEAD!

All MunchkinsDing Dong the witch is dead.

GlindaArent you forgetting the ruby slippers?

WITCH TRIES TO REMOVE THE RUBY SLIPPERS BUT THEY

DISAPPEAR UNDER THE HOUSE.

MUNCHKINS GATHER AROUND DOROTHY ALLOWING HER TO

CHANGE HER SHOES.WitchThe ruby slippers! What have you done with them? Give them back to me, or Ill ---

GlindaIts too late! There they are and there theyll stay!

DOROTHY GLANCES AT HER FEET

DorothyId give anything to get out of Oz, but which way is back to Kansas?

GlindaThe only person who can help you know is the great and wonderful Wizard of Oz. He lives in the Emerald City and thats a long way from here.

Scene 4LIGHTS FADE. THEY EXIT STAGE. THE TINMAN STANDS IN MIDDLE OF STAGE WITH STIFF.

DOROTHY OILS ONE SIDE AND PASSES TO SCARECROW TO OIL

THE MONKEYS RUN AROUND THEM AND LEAVE WITH THE WITCH

Scene 5LIGHTS ARE LOW TO SHOW A SCARY FOREST. DOROTHY, SCARECROW, TINMAN ENTER FROM BACK OF HALL AND WALK DOWN THE AISLE.Dorothy

I dont like this forest. Its dark and creepy.

ScarecrowOf course, I dont know but I think it might get darker before it gets lighter.

DorothyDo you think that we will meet any wild animals?

TinmanWe might.

ScarecrowAnimals that -- that eat straw?

TinmanSome, but mostly Lions and Tigers and Bears.

ALL THREE LOOK AT EACH OTHERDorothyLions?

THEY WALK AROUND THE STAGE GETTING FASTER AND THE

SOUND EFFECT OF THE LION ROARS FROM THE BACK. HE RACES

TO THE STAGE AND PUTS UP PAWS AS THOUGH GOING TO FIGHT.LionPut em up put em up! Which one of you first? Ill fight you both together if you want. Ill fight you with one paw tied behind my back. Ill fight you standing on one foot. Ill fight you with my eyes closed.TinmanGo away and leave us alone!

LionScared are you? Come on and fight you empty tin can. You too you stack of straw.

DOROTHY GOES TOWARDS THE LION AND HITS HIM ON THE NOSEDorothyShame on you, you bully!

LionWhat What did you do that for? I didnt bite him!

DorothyNo, but you tried to.LionIs my nose bleeding?ScarecrowOf course not! What a fuss your making. Why your nothing but a coward.

LionYoure right. I am a coward. I havent any courage at all. I even scare myself. Look at the circles under my eyes. I havent slept in weeks.

TinmanWhy dont you try counting sheep.

LionThat doesnt do any good I am too scared of them.

ScarecrowDo you think that the Wizard could help him?

DorothyI dont see why not. Why dont you come and visit the Wizard with us? We are on our way to get him a heart.

TinmanAnd him a brain.

DorothyI am sure that he could give you some courage.

Scene 6TWO FLYING MONKEYS HOLD THE CRYSTAL BALL FOR THE WITCHWitchSo my pretties, your only minutes away from the Emerald City eh? Well I think I shall have to speed up my revenge plan. I shall get those ruby slippers if it is the last thing I do. And when I do get them, my power will be the greatest in all of Oz. (LAUGHS)

Scene 7THE CHARACTERS ARE ALL HUDDLED TOGETHER CENTRE STAGE

LionWait a minute, wait a minute. I know that we are finally in the Wizards room, but I think I shall give it a miss thank you. (he turns to go and the others stop him)ScarecrowWhats the matter with him?TinmanOh he is just scared again.

DorothyYou cant give up now we have come so far. Besides, he will give you some courage to stop you behaving like this.

SILVER PAPER IS IN THE BUCKET. WitchOoh you cursed brat. Look at what you have done. I am melting! Melting! Who would have thought that a good little girl like you could destroy my beautiful wickedness!!!!!!

TinmanI think you killed her!

DorothyI didnt mean too. She was going to hurt my friend.

LionQuick the broom. Grab it and lets go see the wizard!

Scene 10THEY ARE BACK IN THE WIZARDS ROOM.

OZCan I believe my eyes? Why have you come back?

DorothyPlease Sir, we have done what you have told us. We have brought back the witches broomstick. We melted her.

DorothyBut I want to go back home now!

DorothyYou? But we didnt think that. You promised us that you would grant us our wishes. You said you would give the Tinman his heart.

ScarecrowAnd me a brain and him courage andLionBut most of all to send our friend Dorothy home to Kansas.

OZWhy anyone can have a brain. People go to school and learn and when they go home they can still talk like you. The only thing you need is a diploma to say you have one.

DorothyOh Scarecrow, how wonderful.

OZAnd where I was born there are men who do good things all day. And their hearts are no bigger than yours. Remember, to love friends you need a heart and your friendship with these people is bigger than any heart. Here is a clock in the shape of a heart for you to remember that you will always have time for your friends.

LionTick tock the tinman has a clock! Hey that rhymes!

OZ And the Lion. Many people admire heroes, but they have no more courage than you have. The only thing you havent got is a medal. So for your bravery I give you this medal to show how brave you are.

DorothyOh Mr Wizard! Thank you, you have been so kind.OZAnd finally I come to you. I was born in Kansas too. So I know how much you miss your home. I shall of course take you back myself, as I wish to see Kansas once more. I have a hot air balloon to take us but I think there is one more person who may have a quicker way.

GLINDA THE GOOD WITCH ENTERS

GlindaThat is right Oz. Those ruby slippers on your feet Dorothy will take you back home without any mode of transport.

DorothyReally? I dont understand!

GlindaWell I did say that the only reason the Wicked Witch of the West wanted them was because of their powers. They have magical powers if you click your heels 3 times and say the words There is no place like homeDorothyReally? Tinman, Lion, Scarecrow I will never forget you. You have really shown me how wonderful a friend can be. I will really miss you all.

Old DorothyAnd thats the story of the Wonderful Wizard of Oz. I suppose it is true, there is such a place where magic does exist, where Witchs fly on broomsticks, and Munchkins sing and dance. All you have to do is believe. If you believe, your dreams will come true... And maybe one day, you might visit the magic land... Somewhere over the Rainbow...CAST ENTER FOR SOMEWHERE OVER THE RAINBOW. LIGHTS DOWN.
