ABOUT WIZ KIDS Since 2009, Wiz Kids has had a mission to create environments that give young people an opportunity to have life-impacting experiences both athletically and academically. Our highest priority is creating programming that is safe, enriching, fun and interactive. Below are just a few of the reasons which reinforce our commitment to achieving excellence in youth programming.

COMBATING SUMMER LEARNING LOSSAccording to the National Summer Learning Association at Johns Hopkins University, all young people experience learning losses when they do not engage in educational activities during the summer.

ACCELERATING ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT“...the level of academic achievement that students attain by eighth grade has a larger impact on their college and career readiness by the time they graduate from high school than anything that happens academically in high school.” ACT, 2008 study The Forgotten Middle

PROMOTING YOUTH FITNESSA 2007 study at Ohio State University found that children who do not participate in extracurricular activities are most susceptible to weight gain during the summer months.Source: Johns Hopkins University’s National Summer Learning Association

We have tons of exciting additions to our summer camp program offering this year! Culinary Programs, Martial Arts, Football Skills, Tumbling, Specialty Camps and Expanded Camp University College Tours, ACT Prep, International Studies. Also, SWIMMING RETURNS for HF Kids Institute participants!

THE HF KIDS INSTITUTE is an all-day summer camp that fosters growth and builds lasting relationships for children entering the 1st through 8th grades. During the course of the camp session, students in the primary grades are provided with enrichment curriculum that features both Common Core and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) themes. Students will have a wide selection of electives and core activities designed to provide a robust camp experience. The program also features a schedule of diverse and age appropriate field trips, from waterparks and local museums to exciting travels abroad.

CAMP UNIVERSITY programs are specifically designed for high school students seeking to enhance their future scholarship eligibility. The program selection includes STEM based learning opportunities, intense college entrance exam preparation as well as elite off-season training in their sport or performing arts program of choice. Students also participate in a series of college tours that will provide them with an overview of the college experience, as well as a seminar geared to help them successfully apply to their school of choice.

SPECIALTY CAMPS for students seeking niche experiences in the fields of business, technology, engineering, theatre and culinary arts. Each camp segment has been meticulously structured to provide children with well rounded opportunities for accelerated development.

WHY PSAT? Annually each fall over 3.5 million high school students (mostly sophomores and juniors) take the National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test, also known as the PSAT. This test helps you prepare for the SAT while determining your eligibility for a National Merit Scholarship. The PSAT offers your child the chance to improve his/her test– taking skills with no negative consequences. Results have no bearing on college admissions or their high school transcript. The possible payoff??? Scholarship money for college!

FOOTBALLSKILLS

Basketball is an exciting team sport that builds character and promotes healthy exercise. Our coaches focus on improving a child’s game while nurturing enjoyment of the sport and teaching important life skills that the child can use off the courts. Through individual drills and team competition, each camper has an opportunity to enhance his or her overall basketball skills.

The advanced and high school divisions are specifically designed for players who have been exposed to competitive and team basketball. While fundamentals are emphasized during warm-ups, the majority of the time is spent scrimmaging and playing games. Each team is given a camp offense and defense and their coach works on those concepts. Games and teams are modified to assure that each player is working to develop as a complete player. A strong emphasis is placed on TEAMWORK and making each other better. All campers will have an oppor-tunity to play against outside competition during the course of the camp session. Eligible: HF Kids Institute (Grades 1-8) & Camp University Students

Wiz Kids football skills camp is a non-padded and non-contact core activity. All campers will be instructed on offensive, defensive and proper weight lifting tech- niques. Technical skills including, throwing, catching, ball carrying are emphasized during daily sessions. Participants will also learn the proper footwork needed for each offensive and defensive position, as well as the correct football stance needed for each position. Coaches will also teach strategy during 7 on 7 drills and scrimmages. Eligible: HF Kids Institute (Grades 5-8)

The summer program focuses on full swing, short game, course management, physical fitness, and fundamentals that will last a lifetime. We teach the game from the green back to the tee philosophy, spending much time on the scoring shots; those inside of 100 yards.

The camp will be divided into two groups, Novice and Advanced. The Novice group focuses on the basics of golf, safety, etiquette, scoring through fun games, drills, contests, & some oncourse play. The Advanced group is comprised of intermediate to experienced junior golfers who will focus on golf fitness, instruction, short game refinement, tournament preparation and course play.

The afternoon session takes place at Coyote Run Golf Course, and is led by Head Pro and General Manager, Tom Denklau (PGA America, 15 years) along with fellow Coyote staff pro, Byron Legardy (United States Golf Teachers Federation Certified Instructor, 10 years). This team leads campers daily in a rotation of skill appropriate activities encompassing all aspects of the game. Campers will also have the opportunity to participate in golf-related field trips and junior competitions. Eligible: HF Kids Institute (Grades 3-8) & Camp University Students

36 | WIZ KIDS SUMMER CAMP 2016

The modern dance program will be divided into two sections divided (beginner and intermediate). Decisions regarding skill level will be based on a pre-camp assessment for proper placement. Daily training sessions include a rigorous, thoughtful curriculum of the following: • Historical background of modern dance • Education on dance wellness and proper body mechanics • Instruction in various modern dance techniques • Developing improvisation skills • Instruction on performance skills and choreography

Instructors will also cultivate choreography to be showcased to the public. Additional performance opportunities will be available to students who excel during the camp.

The program is led by Carla Watson, M.D. She began studying dance in 1975 at The Sammy Dyer School of the Theatre, under the direction of the late Shirley Hall Bass. She continued her study of dance at How-ard University as a dance minor and a member of the HU Dance Ensemble. During that time, Dr. Watson trained in classical ballet at the Dance Institute of Washington. This opportunity afforded her to study and perform with the Dance Theatre of Harlem at the Kennedy Center. Dr. Watson received her medical degree from Howard University. She currently practices physical medicine and rehabilitation. A part of her practice includes dance medicine, where she treats dance-related injuries. She was the co-founder and artistic director of LeCor Dance Academy in Homewood, IL. She is currently on the board of the Nashville Children’s Dance Theatre and teaches master classes for various schools around the country. Eligible: HF Kids Institute (Grades 4-8) & Camp University Students

All instrumentalists (Winds, Brass, Strings and Percussion) enrolled in their school music program (if offered at their school) who have studied an instru-ment for one or more years are eligible to register for this program. The program aims to develop musical talent and musical appreciation, geared towards helping students improve their standing in school band or orchestra. The camp features multiple performance opportunities, exceptional training and loads of fun.

Specifically, campers will improve musicianship via a cadre of carefully selected activities including daily practice of major and minor scales, ensemble rehearsal and group improvisation. Our staff will also emphasize the technical development of perfor-mance skills as well as sharpen skills in reading and writing music. Campers will be introduced to Advanced Music Theory including ear training, musical memory exercises, memorization of standard Jazz/Blues tunes and more. Instrumental musicians give impromptu performances for each other and for parents during the camp session. At the end of camp, instrumental musicians will also perform for parents and peers as a part of the final award ceremony.

Michael Rogers is the director of the music program and has extensive teaching experience through positions as Music Department Chair at the Laboratory Schools of the University of Chicago, Director of Music Education at Elmhurst College, and Orchestra Director, AP Music Theory Instructor, and Fine Arts Department Chair at Homewood-Flossmoor High School. Dr. Rogers earned his Bachelor of Arts in Music Education (Cornell College), Master of Arts in Music Composition (University of Chicago), PhD in Music Education (Northwestern University), as well as post-doctoral studies through the Society for Learning and the Brain. Eligible: HF Kids Institute (Grades 5-8) & Camp University Students

The Music Camp welcomes musicians to enroll at any proficiency level, and encourages individual musical growth through innovative classes designed for discovery, learning, challenges, progress, and success.
