THURSDAY, DECEMBER 2, 1897.

AHRKVII'l'RAI, J'A'IRS.

A correspondent yesterday suggest-ed that a fair bo held in Honolulu, and tha agricultural products be sentthither for display. Some ilftcenyears or so ago we used to have mAgricultural Society that Inaugurated'a flower show, and the display of dai-

ry products, vegetables, fruits and do-

mestic animals. Prizes were given forthree or four years, but after thattime; it ennie togrief, exactly why, the. writer cannot remember., Thenthere w.ere. for a year or two flowerfchows held on King street, domesticanimals, and dairy products and veg-

etables no longer, being displayed. Butthis also came to an end, and for manyyears nothing lias btjen tlone in ibisline.

The suggestion made is a 'very goodone, and those who are interested 1nthe minor industries should agitateamong themselves and 'get up such anexhibition. There is hardly a town inthe United States and in ICngland thatdoes not have its agricultural show atsome time in the year. The yearly dis-

play is of great benefit to the produc-er; he sees what others are doing, andlearns from' their successes. Such atdiow would male a very pjeasantbreak in the monotony of the year, and many would come to it from theother Island". Indeed there is noreason why such shows should be con-

fined to Honolulu. Each Island mightliave its show, at some period of theyear, suitable to the particular

industries. In a matter of this kind the Com-

missioner (if Agriculture should takethe lead. It is clearly in his provinceto draw up-pla- for such a purpose, and funds would be forthcoming ifthe all'air were agitated by that de- -

partmcut of the government. But this is only one branch 'of what

ought to be ,done. Several years agothe present writer suggested that thesmall producers should join together, and' start an emporium for purely fs-- 1

land products, .and thus sell direct tothe consumer. 'I'ljc go.ids mi sold wereto be marked as coming from the par-

ticular ranch which shipped them, andin this way a reputation for particularexcellence might be built up, and stuffnot worth' twenty' cents a poundwould not be put alongside,,gilt edgedbutter, and sold under the genericjiame of '"Fresh Island Butter," as itis at present.

Were there such a central distribut-ing point Island vegetables and fruitwould take a distinct place in the mar-ket. There is no reason why we shouldget cauliflower from California, when"we can raise just as gitod an article

' liere. We can raise all the grapes weUieed, in fact there are quantities ofgarden and orchard produce whichwe need, are constantly asking for, which could be produced here if therewas some systematic Way of gettingihe produce before those who are ask-- ting for it. As it is now, Island pro-

ducts a iv lost among the mass of for-

eign "products, with which the, grocer'sfrtore is necessarily tilled.

Jt is to be hoped that these sugges-tions will meet with the approval ofsometof our practical farmers andthat action may lie taken in the mat-

ter at an early date.

A PRETTY STORY.

A very prjtty Instance of autocraticsovereignty lias been displayed recent-ly in Russia, As is well known theCzar, Alexander II, had a left handedwife.' Monarclis have a way of hav-

ing left handed wives who receive ti-

tles and honors. The left handedwives of other people are apt to ru- -

ccive evil names instead of titles, butthis by the way. Alexander II alsoleft a large family by his "Princess"and like a good father provided hand-somely for them. The little fortuneamounted to $:i0,000,000, and Baronvon Taube was ,inadu4 trustee of theproperty. The Baron recognised thatthe laborer is worthy of his hire andmanaged to get away with thenodestamount of $4,000,000, or in plain wordsembezzled that sum. The Prliiees, sfound out the peculations and broughtsuit against the Baron. The latter, Inself defense, began giving so manyunsavory details of the late Emper-or's life, to whose Don Juan he hailplayed n life-lon- g I.cporello, that thepresent wished to stop thetrial. The Baron's guilt was clearlyproven; but the Emperor wished the

--Princess to drop the case, offering to

pay tin- - $l,omi,i)oo out nf his prlypurse If she did'. Hut the I'rlnrcstwas pig headed und" wished to iutilshher Huron, so the Kmjteror lluallymade use of his autocratic power, aiidstopped the case. ' Being vury wroth,he now refuse's to pay the 4,000,000,so the 1'rliieess has lost both her re-

venge and her dollars. But this gives a very unsavory pic-

ture of court life, and one that therepublican can use Alth somewhattelling force, when he comes to argueabout tin; ways ofoiionitrehs and theirrelations with their subjects. HereWe have In tlie first Instance a mon-

arch defying the moral law. We haveone of his tools steeping himself incrime, and then we have tlur-hea- d ofthe State stepping In and Interferingwith what justice can be obtained, byquashing the proceedings summarily. Is it any wonder that Nihilism is ram-

pant throughout a country where suchcan occur. Autocracy is untamed andundipped monarchy. It is monarchy

i,s vry woit, but the germ ot autoeracy lies in monarchy, and allmen who love freedom, know that theonly true safety of liberty lies litdipping monarchy of every scrap ofpower, and vesting it in the people. There is only one form of govern-ment that a freedom loving peoplesh'ould have, and that is a republic.
