THURSDAY 7 OCTOBER 2010 L E I S U R E CHENNAI TIMES 8 T ravelling can be fun either when you’re on a vacation or on a busi- ness trip, as you always manage to squeeze a little time to see the place and shop around. However, with travelling comes meticulous packing, to keep you prepared for any unforeseen situations. And if you’re travelling with a pet, you need to take care of the special needs of your pet and prepare yourself for any pet emergencies. Here are some tips to smoothen your journey while travelling with your pet: Firstly, you need to assess your pet. If your pet is young or old, or ill, they are in a delicate condition and thus, need extra care. In such situations, it’s better to leave your pet in someone’s care rather than make them travel. Take your pet to the vet for a health check-up. Assess your pet’s health, for any problems. Also discuss the destina- tion, duration and the modes of travel- ling with your pet’s vet, to see if its fea- sible and comfortable for your pet. Get the necessary vaccinations adminis- tered. Do a bit of research to know if the hotel you’re going to be staying, accepts pets. Whether there are any pet-friendly serv- ices or grooming facilities at the hotel or in the vicinity nearby. Also, find out if there are any special pet fees included, food arrangements for pets etc. Pack enough food, soaps, toys etc. for your pet, to last the entire trip. You don’t want your precious to starve and fall sick. Try to make sure that your pet is well placed in the airplane carrier. It can be a difficult for your pet to travel all alone in a strange environment especially during long-hour flights. Place toys or better still some sock or a kerchief, used by you i.e. play things. This will help your pet from feeling lonely in the carrier. Paste your pet’s name and more impor- tantly your name, address and number on the carrier box in which your pet is in. In case of a loss of baggage, your pet will be returned to you. Pets should not be given food and water immediately before a flight because they will feel the urge to relieve them- selves during the journey, which won’t be possible. Just before beginning your journey, make your pet walk and run around. Take them for a run and some playtime, as they will be stationed in the carrier for the entire journey. Also, it will drain some of your pet’s energy making it sleepy and calm during the journey. Usually, a scared pet may defecate, uri- nate or even vomit. Therefore, place extra towels in their carrier. Never place a leash in the crate or carri- er because your pet might get entangled in it. In the backdrop of the Wildlife Week, which will culminate today, several young minds in the city have come together to show how connected they are with their ‘green zones’. Irrespective of the fact that they live in modern-day concrete jun- gles, the youth brigade is now going all-out on night safaris to observe the behaviour of giant crocodiles and alligators, pitching in their efforts towards the afforestation process in various belts which are under threat of destruction and catching up on seminars and docu- mentaries highlighting the state of the environment. Speaking about the initiatives his group is carrying out for pro- tection of India’s precious forest lands, Ramesh Venkataraman, the founder of Junglescapes, an NGO dedicated to the preservation of natural habitats, afforestation and empowerment of tribal groups liv- ing in the vicinity of forest reserves, says, “We are joining forces with everyone from corpo- rates to the student community to children and adults to help us in our quest to restore the green cover in high risk areas in Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. By inspiring peo- ple to plant saplings on a large scale, creating eco-friendly chulhas and disseminating information about carbon credits and how they can be purchased, we are doing our bit to help increase the green cover in affected areas.” While there are afforesta- tion efforts on one side, on the other end of the spec- trum, environmental activists and conservationists are trying their best to educate Chennaiites about the roles rep- tiles play in our ecosystem. Akanksha Mukherjee from the centre for herpetology at the Madras Crocodile Bank says, “We had several visitors coming in this year as part of the Wildlife Week celebrations. One of the most excit- ing programmes was the 30-minute night safari across the park. The visitors primarily come to see the eye-shine of the crocodiles, which is only visible during the night as they resurface for breathing. It is also one of the techniques used to conduct census on such reptiles. Which is why, a lot of young nature lovers find this walk useful for their research.” In fact, youngsters in Chennai today have realised that it’s on them that the onus of protecting wildlife resources will fall, in the not so distant future. Nishant Doshi, a student of a popular college in the city, elabo- rates, “We had recently conducted a wildlife poster design contest for the students in our campus for which we received several entries from students in all departments. Apart from this, the nature club of our college, which is very active, also arranged for an excursion to the Guindy National Park, which was quite a fun experience for all of us. Following this, we conducted a seedling distribution drive to ensure that all students were entrusted with the responsibility of nurturing at least one tree in their neighbourhood.” Bijoy Bharathan Young nature lovers in Chennai have come together to raise awareness and herald positive change in the backdrop of the Wildlife Week celebrations...
