Vision STATEMENT

A community where everyone who is critically ill has the nourishment they need to manage their illness. Food & Friends is built on a simple premise: anyone can get sick and everyone can help.

• We believe that everyone managing a critical illness should have the nourishment

they need to improve their health and enhance their quality of life, so we

prepare and provide specialized meals that are designed to meet the

medical and dietary needs of each of our clients.

• We believe in nourishing both the body and the mind, so our meals are

delivered by caring community members who also help end the sense

of social isolation that can result from a critical illness, particularly for

the homebound.

• We believe that no one is immune from illness, regardless of

demographics or economic status.

• We believe in the power of compassion and the importance of

neighbors helping neighbors, so we create opportunities for

impactful and fulfilling volunteer service that helps our sick

neighbors in need and builds a healthier community for all.

Mission STATEMENT

To improve the lives and health of people with HIV/AIDS, cancer and other serious illnesses that limit their ability to provide nourishment for themselves by:

• preparing and delivering specialized meals and groceries that are

designed to meet the medical and dietary needs of each of our clients;

• providing nutritional counseling and wellness education that enhances

our clients’ quality of life; and

• creating a strong sense of community for both our clients and volunteers

that reduces the social isolation that often comes with serious illnesses

and provides meaningful opportunities for neighbors to help neighbors

in need.

Leadership MESSAGE

Periodically, organizations need to

pause in order to gather strength

and focus. 2016 was that year for

Food & Friends, with significant

highs and notable challenges.

Through your partnership, we

served our 20 millionth meal, were

voted Best Place to Volunteer in

D.C. for the second year running,

and completed a major health im-

pact study. Donors like you made it

possible for Food & Friends to fulfill

our commitment to our neighbors

in need by providing 905,000 meals

to over 2,600 adults and children

diagnosed with HIV/AIDS, cancer or another life threatening illness.

But we also faced some difficult truths. We had sprinted through the last several years and

found ourselves in a place in which we needed to pause to analyze our strengths and weak-

nesses, and assess our capacity, all while not relenting in our commitment to care for people

with serious illness. We know there is a need for Food & Friends’ care well beyond what we can

currently meet; the question is can we expand our services to reach those in precarious health?

Food & Friends also faced reductions in public funding, causing us to think deeply about how we

fundraise for our charitable mission. We needed to reposition ourselves to more effectively raise

funds from public sources, as well as diversify our fundraising efforts so that we are less subject

to the fluctuations of government funding.

With support from the Eugene and Agnes E. Meyer Foundation, we undertook a strategic plan

in order to create a solid foundation for the next phase of the organization, starting in 2017.

With input from stakeholders across the organization — our staff, clients, donors, volunteers

and Board of Directors — we put together a four-year plan to achieve the following goals:

• Improve the health and wellbeing of our clients;

• Expand community and donor engagement and awareness;

• Increase the number of people served; and

• Strengthen capacity and build sustainability to prepare for future growth.

You are important partners in our future. Our strategic plan will allow us to effectively

and smartly pursue our vision of a community where

everyone who is critically ill has the nourishment they

need to manage their illness.

The enormous potential of our work was underscored

by the completion of our Diabetes Pilot Project, started

in 2014 in conjunction with the George Washington

University Medical Faculty Associates’ Heart and

Vascular Institute, and funded by the Lerner Family

Foundation and individuals like you. The positive

results, discussed in more detail on page 5, demon-

strate that Food & Friends’ service is not limited to

humanitarian concerns, but is actually critical to

managing chronic illness, reducing hospitalizations,

and improving health outcomes.

You will be pleased to know Food & Friends is at the

cutting edge of the Food is Medicine movement. Our

sister organizations, as part of the national Food is

Medicine Coalition, are conducting similar research

with additional positive results. Collectively, we are

demonstrating the importance of our mission and

impact, responding to the health and nutritional needs

of those within our community who need it most. It’s

an obvious proposition for those in need — food (good

food) is medicine.

It was a year of challenges, it was a year of reflection,

it was a year of planning. As we chart our future we

pause to reflect on the many people who make this

work possible. We offer our heartfelt appreciation to

you, for your dedicated interest and support, as well as

to our dedicated staff, board and volunteers, and the

thousands of donors who understand what it means to

provide a home-cooked, nutritionally-appropriate meal

or healthy groceries to a neighbor in need.

In gratitude,

Cherishing Our Community Gaining New InsightsDIABETES PILOT STUDY

In 2016, Food & Friends completed a two-year pilot project

in partnership with the George Washington University Heart &

Vascular Institute to examine the impact of our meal service

for D.C. area residents with poorly-managed type 2 diabetes.

We provided specialized meals and individualized nutrition

counseling to over 100 participants and 75 family members.

Researchers found several statistical correlations between

Food & Friends’ nutrition services and the pilot clients’

health, including improved medication adherence and

increased diabetes knowledge. Most importantly, they saw

a statistically significant change in their HbA1c (glycated

hemoglobin) level, which gives an overall picture of a per-

son’s average blood sugar. Lowering this number can cut the

risk of kidney disease cataracts, heart failure, amputation,

peripheral vascular disease and other ailments common

among those living with poorly-controlled diabetes.

“When [Food & Friends] came to me, I was in my hospital

bed. I was definitely facing amputation at that time.

[Now] I’m walking, I don’t have any machines hooked

up to me, and all I can say is thank you,” said Derek Simms,

a diabetes pilot participant.

With continued exposure to Food & Friends’ diabetic meal

plan, clients began to enjoy a new way of eating and many

said they did not miss their old foods. As clients started

seeing positive results, such as improved blood glucose and

weight loss, they became even more receptive to their doc-

tors’ recommendations, promoting a positive cycle of health.

The encouraging results of the pilot are further evidence of

the impact of Food & Friends’ unique combination of meal

delivery and nutrition counseling. We are grateful for the

financial support that made this project possible, including

lead funders the D.C. Department of Health’s Community

Health Administration, The Annette M. and Theodore N.

Lerner Family Foundation Inc. and the The Morris &

Gwendolyn Cafritz Foundation for their support of this pilot.

“When [Food & Friends] came to me, I was in my hospital bed. I was definitely facing amputation at that time. [Now] I’m walking, I don’t have any machines hooked up to me, and all I can say is thank you,” DEREK a diabetes pilot participant

Amy Boris FOOD & FRIENDS VOLUNTEER

Having ridden in the AIDSRides in the 1980s,

Amy Boris and her husband John came to Food

& Friends as delivery volunteers in 1996. Bringing

their children along on the delivery route, the Boris

family became close to several of the clients they

regularly visited. “We felt that was part of the deal,”

says Amy. “If we’re going to give, we’re going to

really try and help.”

They developed a special bond with one client in

particular, taking him to a Nationals game and

regularly visiting. Amy’s son was only two years old

at the time, but clearly had a connection with the

client. He was an older gentleman with AIDS, and

they found a connection through jazz music and

baseball. Each lit up when they saw each other.

Today, Amy notes how her family’s delivery expe-

rience shaped her children, remarking how they

continue to be involved in volunteer activities, both

at Food & Friends and beyond. She believes it was

important to “[give] them that exposure, under-

standing this is something we believe in and do,

and do as a family.”

Five years ago Amy deepened her volunteer

service with weekly shifts in the Food & Friends

kitchen. “Delivery experience is very different

from working in the kitchen, but they’re equally

important,” she says. “I’ve learned so much being

here about what it takes to get a meal to a client

and how many people have to touch it, literally and

figuratively, how much it costs to make it happen,

and how much the volunteers need to be relied on,

or it couldn’t happen.”

“ My nutrition and portion control has improved greatly. So has the quality of my life. I get to focus on my health care and fitness instead of constantly hunting for and preparing much less nutritious food.” ROBERT, CLIENT

Donors

To thousands of individuals in need of medically-tailored nutrition, Food & Friends has always been there. With your help, we will continue to serve the D.C. Metro Region’s most vulnerable citizens. We are hopeful that you will continue to support our work, creating an even larger safety net to ensure our region’s critically ill will receive the help they need.

Laying a Path Forward2016 STRATEGIC PLANNING

In 2016, with support from the Meyer Foundation,

Food & Friends undertook a strategic plan aimed

at creating a shared vision for the future of the

organization.

With input from stakeholders across the organization

— our staff, clients, donors, volunteers and Board

of Directors — we put together a four-year plan to

achieve the following goals:

• Improve the health and wellbeing of our clients;

• Expand community and donor engagement and awareness;

• Increase the number of people served; and

• Strengthen capacity and build sustain-ability to prepare for future growth.

Food & Friends has experienced significant pro-

grammatic growth over the past decade. Between

2005 and 2015, the total number of meals deliv-

ered rose 62.5% and the number of clients served

rose 32.6%. The number of annual volunteers

rose 125% during that same time period, from

roughly 4,000 in 2005 to over 9,000 today. Yet

during this time, our staff size has remained large-

ly the same. The strategic plan identifies key staff

additions that will allow Food & Friends to meet

the goals noted above, deepening the impact we can have on

each client we serve and broadening our reach in the community.

This four-year plan will enable Food & Friends to make strategic

choices that will guide our future growth. You are important partners

in that future. Our strategic plan will allow us to effectively and smartly

pursue our vision of a community where everyone who is critically ill

has the nourishment they need to manage their illness.
