Plants

• When we went in the countryside we saw a different variety of plants like : fungi, mosses, lichen, cranberry, bog myrtle, ferns, heather, sphagnum moss, oak trees and many more.

Animals

We saw lots of different animals like : roe deer, swan, hare, crow, cow, dead moles, sheep, bull, turkey, peacock, duck, robin and kestrel.

Natural features

• There have been lots of natural features such as : rivers, a lake, peat bogs, a cave, oak trees, forests and more.

Man Made Features

• We have seen a lot of man made features, here are some examples : Plantation, Thirlwall castle, a croft, a hide and the Roman wall.

By Kate and Billy and Craig

• We have cooked different things on a trangia. A trangia is a small like cooker you have with this 2 bowls and a pan. We cooked Bacon, pasta and hot drinks. We used methlyted spirits as fuel.

• We visited Greenlea Lough and saw swans when we were going back to the van. Also we seen hares when we were going to the bird hide, kestrels, and on the lake in the summer different birds lay their own eggs and otters steel their eggs.

We walked through wind rain and sun. we eventually got there and met rangers from the Northumberland National Park.

We reached where we were going and split into 4 groups - we did different actives. Like making a square with sticks and we looked inside to investigate which plants were growing in different ways.

We have learnt about helping others and having a positive attitude. Craig, Billy and Kate

I enjoyed seeing the deer. Daniel and Billy

I didn’t like getting cold and wet at Greenlea Lough. Kate, Craig and Dion

Cutting the rhododendron bushes was hard work but fun. Matthew and Shaun

I enjoyed cooking pasta and bacon sandwiches. Jake and Owen

I didn’t enjoy getting chased by turkeys. Ilona and Abbie

I liked exploring the castle but didn’t enjoy the long walk.. Sam

What We Have LearntBy Owen, Shaun, Daniel

i

• Location: steel rig.

• Skills we learnt was: communication, team work, confidence, responsibility and negotiation.

• We learnt what peat is its basically 3000 year old squashed plants.

• We dug holes for water samples and took pH scales.

Cutting back Rhododendron • Location: Bonnyrigg hall

• We used hacksaws and loppers to cut it down.

• We put them in a fire to dispose of them.

• We learnt that they come from the Himalayas.

• Their oily leaves stop other plants growing.

i

• Hypothermia is when you are too cold.

• Hyperthermia is when you are too hot.

• You need to be prepared because the weather will change fast and you could die of hypothermia.

• Be prepared and keep wrapped up.

• Take suitable clothing.

Access Conservation in Northumberland National Park

• Rangers get paid to run the park.

• Volunteer wardens also help in the park. They make stiles, fencing and boardwalks.

• The bird hide boardwalk saves the peat bog and helps people to cross the bog.
