New Year. Healthier Lifestyle.
As an emergency food provider, your organization provides such an important service to New Yorkers in need. Did you know there is another way you can help the city and the environment by composting and preventing food waste? Food waste makes up 17% of NYC’s waste stream!
Have you had to throw out donated food or leftover scraps from hot meals? Instead of tossing these
foods in the garbage, you can compost them. When food is composted with other organic material
like dirt, it adds vital nutrients to the soil. This soil then can be used to grow trees that line the city
streets and help gardens grow delicious produce. How amazing is that?
How do I compost? There is great information online explaining the proper way to compost on Grownyc.org and here!
Click on locations to see where you can drop off food scraps and here is a printable handout on the
basics of composting in English and Spanish!
COMPOSTING
Spring Newsletter 2017 FOOD BANK FOR NEW YORK CITY
With warmer months ahead, now is the perfect time to get outside and get moving!
The recommended amount of physical activity
is 30 minutes per day, 5 days a week, which is
about 2½ hours a week in total. Below you will
find some ways you can encourage your staff
and clients to meet the daily recommendations
for physical activity. Remember, creating a plan
for how to meet your goals will make it easier to
achieve them! If you have any medical conditions,
be sure to talk to your doctor before beginning
any exercise program.
WHEN - Choose the dates and times that work
best for your schedule. Put activities on your
calendar and keep to your schedule like you
would an important appointment.
WHAT - Decide what type of exercise/activity you
enjoy - walking, light stretching, running, yoga,
dancing, etc. Choose the activity that you want to
do! It should make you feel good.
HOW MUCH – Set a time goal. Will you begin with
30 minutes a week? An hour? Start slow and work
on your endurance until you reach the minimum
goal of 2½ hours per week! Even just 10 minutes
at a time can make a big difference.
WHERE - Finally, where will you work out?
There are plenty of options - join a low cost
gym, workout at home or at the park. You can
experiment and see what you like best!
