Dear ASA100 Members
ASA100 Members' Forum - Canberra, 25 October 2016
We are now in the final preparations for the ASA100 Members’ Forum on 25 October 2016. If you have
not registered for the ASA100 Members’ Forum, we encourage you to do so as soon as possible by
responding to this email.
As previously announced, the ASA100 has secured Chairman & Yip as the venue for the
ASA100 Members’ Forum dinner. In addition to our special guest of honour, the Deputy Prime Minister &
Minister for Agriculture, The Hon. Barnaby Joyce MP, the new Chinese Ambassador, Cheng Jingye will
also be attending the dinner. ASA100 Co-Chair Andrew Forrest and ASA100 Special Advisor Jannette
Cotterell met with Ambassador Cheng Jingye in Canberra last week and the ASA100 looks forward to
building a mutually beneficial relationship with Ambassador Cheng Jingye and the Embassy of the
People's Republic of China in Australia.
In addition to the dinner, the ASA100 is very excited to present a top line up of speakers including
Ministers, former Trade Ministers and Shadow Ministers, as well as experts in the fields of food fraud
technology, technical & non tariff barriers, the magic marketing ingredients for China and the risks and
rewards of doing business in China. There will also be an update on the Bonded Free Trade Zone
initiative being developed in the Zhoushan Province.
High Level Meetings - Canberra, 12 October 2016
Last week, ASA100 Co-Chairs Andrew Forrest and Jennifer Westacott, board member Harold
Mitchell AC and ASA100 Special Advisor Jannette Cotterell held a successful round of high level
meetings in Canberra including with the:
Minister for Trade, Tourism and Investment, The Hon. Steven Ciobo MP
Minister for Small Business, The Hon. Michael McCormack MP
Shadow Minister for Trade and Investment, The Hon. Jason Clare MP
Shadow Minister for Agriculture and Rural & Regional Australia, The Hon. Joel Fitzgibbon MP
Secretary of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Frances Adamson
In these meetings, Andrew, Jennifer and Harold prosecuted the case for ASA100 members on a range
of issues. Importantly, we received a very positive response from both Government and the Opposition, to
support the case for an opt-in unified export brand that ASA100 members can leverage in China.
Attached to this email are a sample unified export logos that the ASA100 hopes to market test with
Chinese consumers. The concept is to determine what it will take to ensure that Chinese consumers
purchase ASA100 members’ products over our competitors from New Zealand and South America. We
hope to have the chosen unified export brand underpinned by the latest in traceability technology.
Breakfast with the Leaders of ASA100 - Parliament House, 12 October 2016
The highlight of the day was the Breakfast with the Leaders of ASA100 event which saw Andrew, Jennifer
and Harold and other ASA100 members host a multi-party breakfast with more than 50 Members
of Parliament (MPs) and Senators from all sides of politics including those MPs that sit on agriculture,
trade and economy committees.
Assistant Trade Minister, The Hon. Keith Pitt MP and The Hon. Joel Fitzgibbon MP both addressed the
event. The attending MPs were each provided with a ASA100 Members’ Produce Bag which a number of
MPs declared as the “best gift bag ever”. The aim of this event was to raise the profile of ASA100 and to
harness the support and understanding, among key stakeholders in Parliament, of the ASA100’s and its
members’ objectives.
We have included some photos of the event below.
ASA100 Morning Tea and Andrew Forrest Keynote Address - NFF National Congress, 26 October
2016
Please also come along to the ASA100 Morning Tea at the National Farmers' Federation (NFF)
National Congress on 26 October. This event has already seen 300 people RSVP which is fantastic.
Andrew Forrest is giving a keynote address to open the National Congress. Please note the new time
for the keynote address of 8:40am with the ASA100 sponsored morning tea to follow at 10:30am and an
ASA100 panel discussion on China at 11:20am.
We are excited at the new momentum being created by the sheer will and determination of the ASA100
leadership and our members. We know the power of change comes from the commitment and
participation of our members.
We look forward to seeing as many of you as possible at the ASA100 Members' Forum next week.
Kind regards
Jannette Cotterell and Matt Caddy
