    Fifth Sunday in Lent: Year B

    Liturgical Colour: Purple

    ORDER OF SERVICE

    OPENING PRAYER

    The President greets the congregation with one of the seasonal or alternate prayer:

    The following may also be said:

    COLLECT FOR PURITY (BCP Page 101)

    ALL

    Almighty God, to you all hearts are open, all desires known, and from you no secrets are hid:

    cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly

    love you, and worthily magnify your Holy Name, through Christ our Lord. Amen.

    INTROIT HYMN: 114

    Forty days and forty nights

    thou wast fasting in ;

    forty days and forty nights

    tempted, and yet undefiled.

    Sunbeams scorching all the day ;

    chilly dew-drops nightly shed;

    prowling beasts about thy way;

    stones thy pillow; earth thy bed.

    Shall not we thy sorrow share

    and from earthly joys abstain,

    fasting with unceasing prayer,

    glad with thee to suffer pain?

    And if Satan, vexing sore,

    flesh or spirit should assail,

    thou, his Vanquisher before,

    grant we may not faint nor fail.

    So shall we have peace divine:

    holier gladness ours shall be;

    round us too shall shine,

    such as ministered to thee.

    Keep, O keep us, Saviour dear,

    ever constant by thy side;

    that with thee we may appear

    at th’ eternal Eastertide.

    Words: Francis Pott (1832-1909),

    OPENING SENTENCE (BCP Pg. 97)

    The President greets the congregation with the following:

    SEASONAL

    LENT (BCP Page 98)

    Be imitators of God, as beloved children. And walk in love, as Christ loved us and gave Himself

    up for us, a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God. Ephesians 5: 1, 2

    PRESIDENT: Blessed be God: Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

    ALL: And blessed be His Kingdom, now and forever. Amen.

    The following may be said by the President and people: ALL:

    Blessed Lord and Father, we have assembled in your name and in fellowship with one

    another. Enable us by your grace to offer the sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving; to

    proclaim and respond to your holy word. Teach us to pray for your world and your

    Church. Grant that we, confessing our sins, may worthily offer to you our souls and bodies

    as a living sacrifice and eat and drink of your spiritual food in this Holy Sacrament. Amen.

    THE KYRIE (BCP Page 102)

    Lord, have mercy.

    Lord, have mercy.

    Christ, have mercy.

    Christ, have mercy.

    Lord, have mercy.

    Lord, have mercy.

    In place of the above form, the Ninefold or the Threefold Kyrie may be said or sung.

  • 5

    The Collect of the day shall be said or sung by the President.

    PRESIDENT: Let us pray.

    Fifth Sunday in Lent (Page 164 BCP)

    Almighty God, you alone can bring into order the unruly wills and affections of sinners: Grant

    your people grace to love what you command and desire what you promise; that among the swift

    and varied changes of the world, our hearts may surely there be fixed where true joys are to be

    found; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one

    God, now and ever. Amen.

    Ash Wednesday (Page 163 BCP)

    Almighty and everlasting God, you hate nothing you have made and forgive the sins of all

    who are penitent: Create and make in us new and contrite hearts, that we, worthily

    lamenting our sins and acknowledging our wretchedness, may obtain of you, the God of all

    mercy, perfect remission and forgiveness; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and

    reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

    OLD TESTAMENT LESSON

    REFLECTION: In a time of political and religious convulsions, Jeremiah comforts the people of both northern and southern Israel. Despite their past infidelity, God will act for his people,

    in a new way.

    READERS: 7:30a.m. – 9:30a.m. – Jeremiah 31:31-34 “The days are surely coming,” says the Lord, “when I will make a new covenant with the house

    of Israel and the house of Judah. It will not be like the covenant that I made with their ancestors

    when I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt--a covenant that they broke,

    though I was their husband, says the Lord. But this is the covenant that I will make with the

    house of Israel after those days, says the Lord: I will put my law within them, and I will write it

    on their hearts; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. No longer shall they teach

    one another, or say to each other, "Know the Lord," for they shall all know me, from the least of

    them to the greatest, says the Lord; for I will forgive their iniquity, and remember their sin no

    more.”

    REFLECTION THE PSALM: A confession of sin and guilt and a prayer for a clean heart.

    THE PSALM: 51:1-13 Miserere mei, Deus

    7:30 a.m. (page 533 BCP)

    1 Have mercy on me, O God, according to your loving-kindness; * in your great compassion blot

    out my offenses.

    2 Wash me through and through from my wickedness * and cleanse me from my sin.

    3 For I know my transgressions, * and my sin is ever before me.

    4 Against you only have I sinned * and done what is evil in your sight.

    5 And so you are justified when you speak * and upright in your judgment.

    6 Indeed, I have been wicked from my birth, * a sinner from my mother's womb.

    7 For behold, you look for truth deep within me, * and will make me understand wisdom

    secretly.

    8 Purge me from my sin, and I shall be pure; * wash me, and I shall be clean indeed.

    9 Make me hear of joy and gladness, * that the body you have broken may rejoice.

    10 Hide your face from my sins * and blot out all my iniquities.

    11 Create in me a clean heart, O God, * and renew a right spirit within me.

    12 Cast me not away from your presence * and take not your holy Spirit from me.

    13 Give me the joy of your saving help again * and sustain me with your bountiful Spirit.

    9:15 a.m.

    1. Have mercy upon me, O God, after thy great goodness : according to the multitude of thy

    mercies do away mine offences.

    2. Wash me throughly from my wickedness : and cleanse me from my sin.

    3. For I acknowledge my faults : and my sin is ever before me.

    4. Against thee only have I sinned, and done this evil in thy sight : that thou mightest be justified

    in thy saying, and clear when thou art judged.

  • 7

    5. Behold, I was shapen in wickedness : and in sin hath my mother conceived me.

    6. But lo, thou requirest truth in the inward parts: and shalt make me to understand wisdom

    secretly.

    7. Thou shalt purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean : thou shalt wash me, and I shall be

    whiter than snow.

    8. Thou shalt make me hear of joy and gladness : that the bones which thou hast broken may

    rejoice.

    9. Turn thy face from my sins : and put out all my misdeeds.

    10. Make me a clean heart, O God : and renew a right spirit within me.

    11. Cast me not away from thy presence : and take not thy holy Spirit from me.

    12. O give me the comfort of thy help again : and stablish me with thy free Spirit.

    13. Then shall I teach thy ways unto the wicked : and sinners shall be converted unto thee.

    NEW TESTAMENT LESSON

    REFLECTION: The festival of Passover, an occasion when both Jews and others who hold

    God in awe, approaches – as does Jesus' death on the cross.

    READERS: 7:30a.m. – 9:30a.m. –

    Hebrews 5:5-10

    Christ did not glorify himself in becoming a high priest, but was appointed by the one who said

    to him, "You are my Son, today I have begotten you"; as he says also in another place, "You are

    a priest forever, according to the order of Melchizedek." In the days of his flesh, Jesus offered up

    prayers and supplications, with loud cries and tears, to the one who was able to save him from

    death, and he was heard because of his reverent submission. Although he was a Son, he learned

    obedience through what he suffered; and having been made perfect, he became the source of

    eternal salvation for all who obey him, having been designated by God a high priest according to

    the order of Melchizedek.

    GRADUAL HYMN: 312

    GOD made me for himself, to serve him here

    with love’s pure service and in filial fear;

    to show his praise, for him to labour now;

    then see his glory where the angels bow.

    All needful grace was mine, through his dear Son,

    whose life and death my full salvation won;

    the grace that would have strengthened me, and taught;

    grace that would crown me when my work was wrought.

    And I, poor sinner, cast it all away;

    lived for the toil or pleasure of each day;

    as if no Christ had shed His precious blood,

    as if I owed no homage to my God.

    O Holy Spirit, with thy fire divine,

    melt into tears this thankless heart of mine;

    teach me to love what once I seemed to hate,

    and live to God, before it be too late.

    Words: Arthur C. Ainger (1841-1919)

    THE GOSPEL

    REFLECTION THE GOSPEL: The festival of Passover, an occasion when both Jews and

    others who hold God in awe, approaches – as does Jesus' death on the cross.

    John 12:20-33

    Now among those who went up to worship at the festival were some Greeks. They came to

    Philip, who was from Bethsaida in Galilee, and said to him, "Sir, we wish to see Jesus." Philip

    went and told Andrew; then Andrew and Philip went and told Jesus. Jesus answered them, "The

    hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified. Very truly, I tell you, unless a grain of wheat

    falls into the earth and dies, it remains just a single grain; but if it dies, it bears much fruit. Those

    who love their life lose it, and those who hate their life in this world will keep it for eternal life.

    Whoever serves me must follow me, and where I am, there will my servant be also. Whoever

    serves me, the Father will honor. "Now my soul is troubled. And what should I say--' Father,

    save me from this hour'? No, it is for this reason that I have come to this hour. Father, glorify

    your name." Then a voice came from heaven, "I have glorified it, and I will glorify it again." The

    crowd standing there heard it and said that it was thunder. Others said, "An angel has spoken to

    him." Jesus answered, "This voice has come for your sake, not for mine. Now is the judgment of

    this world; now the ruler of this world will be driven out. And I, when I am lifted up from the

    earth, will draw all people to myself." He said this to indicate the kind of death he was to die.

    SERMON:

    HYMN AFTER THE SERMON: 765

    The angel Gabriel from heaven came,

    his wings as drifted snow, his eyes as flame;

    ‘All hail,’ said he, ‘thou lowly maiden Mary,

    most highly favored lady,’ gloria!

    ‘For know a blessed Mother thou shalt be,

    all generations laud and honour thee,

    thy Son shall be Emmanuel, by seers foretold,

    most highly favoured lady,’ gloria!

    Then gentle Mary meekly bowed her head,

    ‘To me be as it pleaseth God,’ she said,

    ‘my soul shall laud and magnify his holy Name.’

    Most highly favoured lady, gloria!

    Of her, Emmanuel, the Christ, was born

    in Bethlehem, all on a Christmas morn,

    and Christian folk throughout the world will ever say--

    ‘Most highly favoured lady,’ gloria!

    THE NICENE CREED (BCP Page 104)

    We believe in one God,

    the Father, the Almighty,

    maker of heaven and earth,

    of all that is seen or unseen.

    We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ,

    the only Son of God,

    eternally begotten of the Father,

    God from God, Light from Light,

    true God from true God,

    begotten, not made,

    one in Being with the Father.

    Through him all things were made.

    For us and for our salvation

    he came down from heaven:

    by the power of the Holy Spirit

    he was born of the Virgin Mary,

    and became man.

    For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate;

    he suffered, died and was buried.

    On the third day he rose again

    in fulfilment of the Scriptures;

    He ascended into heaven

    and is seated at the right hand of the Father.

    He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead,

    and his kingdom will have no end.

    We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life,

    who proceeds from the Father.

    With the Father and the Son he is worshipped and glorified.

    He has spoken through the Prophets.

    We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church.

    We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.

    We look for the resurrection of the dead.

    and the life of the world to come. Amen.

    ACT OF PENITENCE (BCP Page 123)

    PRESIDENT

    If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins,

    Let us therefore confess our sins.

    OFFERTORY HYMN: 117

    Lo! Now is our accepted day,

    the time for purging sins away,

    the sins of thought, and deed, and word,

    that we have done against the Lord.

    For he the merciful and true

    hath spared his people hitherto;

    not willing that the soul should die,

    though great its past iniquity.

    Then let us all with earnest care,

    and contrite fast, and tear, and prayer,

    and works of mercy and of love,

    entreat for pardon from above;

    that he may all our sins efface,

    adorn us with the gifts of grace,

    and join us to the angel band,

    for ever in the heavenly land.

    Blest Three in One and One in Three,

    almighty God, we pray to thee,

    that thou wouldst now vouchsafe to bless

    our fast with fruits of righteousness.

    COMMUNION HYMNS: 700, 702, 524

    HYMN: 700

    Lord, pour thy Spirit from on high,

    and thine ordained servants bless;

    graces and gifts to each supply,

    and clothe thy priests with righteousness.

    Within thy temple when they stand,

    to teach the truth as taught by thee,

    Saviour, like stars in thy right hand,

    let all thy Church's pastors be.

    Wisdom and zeal and faith impart,

    firmness with meekness, from above,

    to bear thy people in their heart,

    and love the souls whom thou dost love.

    To watch, and pray, and never faint,

    by day and night their guard to keep,

    to warn the sinner, cheer the saint,

    to feed thy lambs and tend thy sheep

    So, when their work is finished here,

    may they in hope their charge resign:

    so, when their Master shall appear,

    may they with crown of glory shine.

    Words: James Montgomery (1771-1854),1833

    HYMN: 702

    O thou Who makest souls to shine

    with light from lighter worlds above,

    and droppest glistening dew divine

    on all who seek a Saviour’s love;

    do thou thy benediction give

    on all who teach, on all who learn,

    that all thy Church may holier live,

    and every lamp more brightly burn.

    Give those, who teach, pure hearts and wise,

    faith, hope, and love, all warmed by prayer;

    themselves first training for the skies,

    they best will raise their people there.

    Give those, who learn, the willing ear,

    the spirit meek, the guileless mind;

    such gifts will make the lowliest here

    far better than a kingdom find.

    O bless the shepherd; bless the sheep;

    that guide and guided both be one,

    one in the faithful watch they keep,

    until this hurrying life be done.

    If thus, Good Lord, Thy grace be given,

    in thee to live, in thee to die,

    before we upward pass to heaven,

    we taste our immortality.

    HYMN: 524

    I lift my heart to thee,

    Saviour Divine,

    for thou art all to me,

    and I am thine.

    Is there on earth a closer bond than this -

    that my Beloved's mine, and I am his?

    Thine am I by all ties;

    but chiefly thine,

    that through thy sacrifice

    thou, Lord, art mine;

    By thine own cords of love, so sweetly wound

    around me, I to thee am closely bound.

    To thee, thou bleeding Lamb,

    I all things owe,

    all that I have and am,

    and all I know;

    All that I have is now no longer mine,

    and I am not my own: Lord, I am thine.

    How can I, Lord, withhold

    life's brightest hour

    from thee; or gathered gold,

    or any power?

    Why should I keep one precious thing from thee,

    when thou hast given thine own dear self for me?

    I pray thee, Saviour, keep

    me in thy love,

    until death’s holy sleep

    shall me remove

    to that fair realm, where, sin and sorrow o'er,

    thou and thine own are one for evermore.

    RECESSIONAL HYMN: 233

    O God beyond all praising,

    we worship you today

    and sing the love amazing

    that songs cannot repay:

    for we can only wonder

    at every gift you send,

    at blessings without number

    and mercies without end:

    we lift our hearts before you

    and wait upon your word,

    we honour and adore you,

    our great and mighty Lord.

    Then hear, O gracious Saviour,

    accept the love we bring

    that we who know your favour

    may serve you as our King.

    And whether our tomorrows

    be filled with good or ill,

    we'll triumph through our sorrows

    and rise to bless you still:

    to marvel at your beauty

    and glory in your ways,

    and make a joyful duty

    our sacrifice of praise.
