WWII and the Korean war. There are more historical tours that go to other parts of
New England.
WELCOME PARTYWe in New England would like to introduce you to a tra-
ditional New England clambake with options for those who don’t like seafood. There will be live entertainment and a silent auction consisting of one-of-a-kind items, including prototypes and preproduction models.
KID’S CLUB ACTIVITIESOn Thursday, we will have a tour designed with the kids
in mind. They will go to historic Mystic Seaport, where they can visit the Charles W. Morgan sailing ship and Mystic Vil-lage. There is a replica of the 19th-century village along with numerous awe-inspiring exhibits. From there, you will go to the Mystic Aquarium to discover the beauty and mystery of underwater worlds that house thousands of colorful fish and exotic marine animals—including sharks, stingrays and jellies. Leaving the seaport, you will continue to the Frito-Lay Potato Chip factory, where you will see how potato chips and other Frito-Lay products are made. You will have an opportunity to visit the sampling room to taste various Frito-Lay products.
On Friday, the youngsters can interact with the huge Kid’s Club layout that is being brought to us by the kids of the METCA Division. There will also be a space with a Brio floor setup that the younger children can enjoy. There will be a Kid’s Club banquet on Saturday evening.
THE TRAIN MARKETPLACE AND PUBLIC DISPLAYSThursday, Friday and Saturday, our hotel halls will be filled
with public displays and layouts for everyone to enjoy. The Train Marketplace will be in the Garden Pavilion and will be open Friday and Saturday to buy, sell or trade toy trains.
THE BANQUET AND AUCTIONWe have planned an exciting banquet for everyone with
some of the best dishes provided by the great chefs at our hotel. There will be a table prize for every seat at every table. Following dinner there will be a live auction led by Greg Stout.
SATURDAY MORNING DEACCESSION AUCTIONBe sure to be here for this—for the first time in TCA history,
we are holding an auction with de-accessed items from the TCA Museum. There will be up to 100 lots of wonderful toy trains and accessories auctioned off, again by Greg Stout.
HOW DO I GET TO WARWICK?If you are driving your own vehicle, there is plenty of FREE
PARKING available at our host hotel, the Crowne Plaza. We have a guaranteed rate of $119 per night. Transportation is available via airline, bus or rail. Each of these transportation options will take you to T.F. Green International Airport (PVD) where you can take a free hotel shuttle for the three-mile trip to the Crowne Plaza Hotel.
WHAT IS THERE TO DO IN RHODE ISLAND?You may want to visit Galilee. Galilee is a fishing village on
Point Judith within the town of Narragansett, Rhode Island, and is notable for being home to the largest fishing fleet in Rhode Island and for being the site of the Block Island Ferry. Galilee is the port where the small boats go out to sea and return with their daily catch. You can board the Block Island Ferry for a 12-mile trip to historic Block Island, where you will find a few of the finest eating establishments on the New England coast.
You may also want to visit the city of Providence, the capi-tal of Rhode Island. It has numerous places of interest and things to do. Providence is home to Brown University and the Rhode Island School of Design, whose RISD Museum displays American art and silver. Nearby, 18th- and 19th-century homes line the streets of College Hill. Waterplace Park is the backdrop for the WaterFire art installation, which lights up the surrounding tidal basin most nights in the sum-mer and for special events.
On the north side of Providence is a section known as Federal Hill. This area has some of the finest Italian restau-rants in the USA.
Within two miles of the Crowne Plaza there are two giant shopping malls—the Warwick Mall and the Rhode Island Mall. Around the corner from the malls is Route #2. This road has virtually every type of store available as well as plenty of restaurants.
You can start your week off by taking our first tour and board a motor coach to Portland, Maine, for a trip to the Maine Narrow Gauge Railroad & Museum. During your ride, you can enjoy the landscapes and vistas of Maine. After visiting the Narrow Gauge Railroad, you will head to Cabbage Island where you will enjoy a true New-England-style lobster bake.
There are other tours that will take in more narrow gauge railroading and a full scale trolley tour.
HISTORICAL TOURS AND MUSEUMSWe could not let you leave Rhode Island without seeing our
historic Newport Mansions. This is where some of history’s most famous people summered. The first mansion tour will take you to the “Breakers,” which was the summer home of the Vanderbilts. The Newport Historical Society has recently introduced a new tour, “Beneath the Breakers,” which takes you through the underground tunnel, boiler room and base-ment of the Breakers. The second tour of the mansions visits three other mansions: the Elms, Rosecliff and Marble House. For lunch on both of the mansion tours, one of our members, Al Michelini, has invited us to enjoy our lunch on the lawn of his summer home right there in Newport.
A trip to Rhode Island would not be complete without try-ing to see all 13 of our lighthouses along the Rhode Island coast. The tour that we have planned will take you to 12 of them. One lighthouse cannot be accessed by boat.
Davisville, Rhode Island, is the first and original home of the fighting Navy Seabees. You will visit the museum with the original Quonset huts, artifacts and equipment used during
