Welcome back Jaguars!

Greetings Jaguars! Boulder Creek is off to an amazing start this school year. It is very gratifying to see the outstanding teaching and

learning that happens day in and day out on our campus. Our campus is buzzing with close to 2600 students. The energy from the

students is exciting. We continue to focus our efforts on increased academic rigor, meaningful relevant instruction, positive

relationships, and personal responsibility.

The Jagnation has pulled together to show our unity of pride and spirit this fall. When any of those in the Jaguar community

experiences loss, the school comes together with support and love. We are sad for the loss and struggles of Boulder Creek jaguars,

our thoughts go out to the families. I am always uplifted when out of tragedy comes hope and belief in a brighter future through the

actions of our school community. For this I am thankful.

I am proud to announce that Boulder Creek high school has been designated by the Arizona Department of Education as an Arizona

Civic Engagement School of Merit for our efforts in civic learning. Such recognition does provide verification that the staff is indeed

creating programs designed to provide students the very best in educational opportunities. The Boulder Creek vision statement “Act

Locally, Think Globally, Collaborate Digitally, Educate Wholly” is evident in the work of our students. Such recognition also gives us

the energy to continue our efforts to be a school committed to continual learning and continual service in our community.

We have many exciting opportunities and events scheduled for this fall. Our fall sports season is in full swing. Our student athletes

are competing fiercely and representing our school with honor. We are having a great turn out for our Homecoming activities. This

year’s theme is Grease, with high school 50’s style fun for everyone. Join the spirit with many fun spirit dress up days, the football

game, and of course the Homecoming dance, Saturday, October 12th.

Boulder Creek will be hosting parent teacher conferences on October 17th. Parent conferences provide the chance to meet one on one with your student’s teachers to discuss strengths and areas for refinement. Please join us as we work together for student success

Parent-Teacher Conferences

You are invited to our fall Parent-Teacher Conferences on Thursday, Octo-ber 17th! The Boulder Creek High School faculty looks forward to meeting with you to discuss your child’s academic achievement. We believe that keeping the lines of communication open between parents/guardians and teachers is a crucial component of facilitating student success!

This is a wonderful opportunity to speak with teachers on a one-to-one basis regarding your student’s academic progress. Teachers will be avail-able in their classrooms for 10 minute conferences from 1:00pm - 4:30pm and from 5:30pm - 8:00pm.

It is recommended that you sign up for specific conference time by going to the school web page (bchs.dvusd.org) and clicking on the link to the Parent-Teacher Conference scheduling tool. Teachers will also post sheets outside their classroom doors to note conference times still available on the afternoon of October 17th. You can sign up for an open time slot and either wait outside the classroom or visit another teacher in the meantime. For your convenience, students will be given a card for you to write down your conference times and room numbers.

Boulder Creek High School earned a Platinum Award for it’s extraordinary achievement

in blood drive participation during the 2012-2013 academic year! Last year, more than

23,000 blood donations were given at Arizona High schools, making them the highest

single donor demographic in the state.

High School and our students understand the

importance of helping others share the ex-

perience. Interact members worked with

Janet Fitzgerald at Fairy Godmothers for a

Prom Dress and tuxedo drive to help all that

deserve to go to their prom and feel confident

and worthy of their accomplishments.

WHAT’S FOR LUNCH? The cafeteria offers many great choices for students to choose from. We have 9 different lines that serve lunch. We have 2 snack bar windows, 1 outside combo line, 1 inside combo line, 1 chicken line, 1 cold sandwich line, 1 Asian bowl line and 1 fiesta line. All lines offer a la carte sales as well as "Meal Deals". A "Meal Deal" is an entree with milk and or a choice of vegetables and fruits with a cup. The price of our "Meal Deals" are $2.75, $3.00 and $3.25. These are the best way to purchase more for your money.

The cafeteria does not fry any of its food. All food is oven baked. Pizza is delivered daily by Barro’s Pizza and once a week we offer Chick-Fil-A a la carte. All other food items are made fresh daily in the cafeteria.

Students all have lunch accounts that parents may put money on. Money can be sent in by cash or check. Parents: when sending in a check please make sure that we have your cur-rent address and phone number on the check. Credit and debit cards payments can be made online using www.easyschoolpay.com.

Deer Valley School District participates in the free and reduced lunch program. Applications are available in the front office and cafeteria. Applications are accepted throughout the entire school year. Cafeteria hours are 6:30 am to 1:15 pm. Please feel free to call anytime with any questions or concerns. TACTICAL SAT STRATEGIES

The Tactical SAT Strategies Course is a ten hour course designed to

help students prepare for the SAT Exam. The class not only helps

students to manage their time taking the test, it also helps with gen-

eral test taking strategies, testing anxiety, and how to break down test

questions. The cost for the course is $150 and is offered the two

weeks prior to each SAT exam. The next sessions are :

5PM, 10/22 2:30-5:00PM & 10/29 2:30-5:00PM

Preparing for Decembers SAT Test—3 day session: 11/18 2:30-

Buy your tick-ets at The Sport for only $10. Be sure to bring those tickets and your ID to the dance. Otherwise, you’ll have to wait in an incredibly long line and pay $5 more for the same ticket. TAX CREDIT DONATIONS

Anyone with or without children, married or single, is eligible for this unprecedented state tax credit.

The $400 maximum state tax credit is available for taxpayers who are married and filing jointly. A hus-

band and wife who file separate returns for a taxable year in which they could have filed a joint return may

each claim only $200.

For a single individual or a head of household, the tax credit is $200.

A state tax credit will allow you to reduce the amount of your tax liability to the state or increase your

refund from the state. If you donate the maximum $400, your Arizona tax bill would be $400 less or your re-

fund would be $400 more.

You may donate less than $400 and be eligible to receive the state tax credit in the amount of your do-

nation. The amount you donate (up to $400) will be the amount you may claim as a state tax credit.

You may split your $400 donation among more than one public school, but will still qualify for a maxi-

mum state credit of $400.

Your donation also reduces your taxable income to the federal government, thereby reducing your tax

burden to the federal government usually by 1/3 of the donation amount.

Boulder Creek High School’s Department of Advanced Academics is proud to announce our 6th year offering the Certificate of Academic Distinction. The Certifi-cate of Academic Distinction provides students with the opportunity to showcase their academic excellence and dedication. The certificate both supplements their diploma, and serves as an indication of their hard work above and beyond the state graduation requirements. It allows students to distinguish themselves in a field of competitors. To earn the certificate, eligible seniors must earn points, honoring academic excellence, community service, humanities, and an independent senior thesis pro-

ject. Students must complete an interdisciplinary project that they develop, research, and conclude. They work with a faculty panel to select an appropriate topic, write a thesis or hypothesis, research the content, conclude their findings, and create an applicable product design to showcase their research. Addition-ally, they present their findings to a panel of judges in an oral defense. Over the past two years, a selected group of high school seniors participated in the CAD program with a variety of thesis topics related to science, engineering, foreign language, art, music, sociology, psychology, math, business, economics, and English language learning, and sustainable energy.

The program includes monthly workshops designed by the CAD team of teachers to assist students with project proposal, prospectus and thesis development, research methods, poster presentation, and oral defense. In May, recipients of the Certificate of Academic Distinction are celebrated at a dinner attended by the students and their parents, and distinguished guests from the community including principals and school board officials. Students are honored as elite learners developing 21st century skills and achieving the highest levels of rigor. StuGo has been working hard to celebrate Boulder Creek High School's 10th anniversary, and we have a TON of fun events for all to attend for Home-coming. During the week of October 7-11, we will be having fun activities each day at lunch like music, competitions, and old fashioned cotton candy machines. Friday, October 11, our school-wide assembly will bring out our spirit as we play crazy games and have our DJ pump us up. Before the big football game against Mountain Ridge, when we announce the Royalty winners at half-time, the whole community will come together with a Tailgating party full of 50's style carnival games, dunk tank, junk car smash, inflatable maze race course and catered food! Admission is only $5. From there, walk on over to the Homecoming football game starting at 7pm. We finish our festivities with a sock hop dance on Saturday, October 12 from 7-10pm. Hope to see you at all of these upcoming events!

The Boulder Creek Lil' Jags will be having their Preschool 8th Annual Parade and Party on Thursday, October 31!

We always look forward to showing off our cute costumes and visiting all of our big friends on campus. Look for

The Pirates of the Caribbean themed Olympics has been designed to be a fun competition for clay enthusiasts from all over Arizona. It’s a great way for the clay community to get together, network, share, and celebrate the wonderful mud that links us all together. Everyone is welcome to

Every year I am astounded with the incredible volunteers who step forward to help our Boulder Creek High

School Parent Teacher Association thrive. Individuals with tremendous talents, heart and dedication take on positions with the PTA that no amount of money could ever fully compensate and it’s these stellar mothers

who inspire me to continue to roll up my sleeves, find more ways to make BCHS the best possible. Deb Liu heard last year the chair of the Copy Cats Moms, who makes copies for teachers every single week

day, needed a chair. After several years serving, Barbara Jordan left and her shoes were big ones to fill. Mrs. Liu , brining together over 30 moms for a training session on the two huge copiers and getting to the

task of making thousands of copies. She put together a schedule, steps involved with copying and got the copy room humming along for the new school year. Few will ever know Mrs. Liu but our high school, our

PtA thrives because of her inordinate sense of altruism. Lana Cracchiolo enjoys entertaining but I don't think she ever thought her gifts of feeding others would ever

include putting on a luncheon for 140 plus teachers/staff every month but here she is and doing quite well. Ask anyone to host a small party and most would shudder so imagine the fear of organizing food for

over 100 people? Who would ever take this role? She is always calm and never deterred by any-thing. Perfect for this role. She and her committee of fabulous moms will think of menus for nine meals and these meals aren't tuna fish sandwiches but food any noteworthy restaurant would serve. Mrs. Cracchiolo and her committee will arrange the gathering of the food items, setting up the luncheon and then clean

up. No glamour here in this committee rather a deep sense of satisfaction of feeding home cooked meals to teachers/staff in great need of soul enriching nourishing.

And finally, Michelle Woods will be chairing our annual student talent show. This is her 7th year of chairing this demanding, taxing role by Mrs. Woods lives for this event: she after all is the matron of Anthem’s own

Von Trapp Family. She and her husband, Todd, will hold auditions and produce a talent show any network would keel over to air.

so your Senor is not left out of the yearbook. There is no fee for your

Spiritline News!

Your Boulder Creek Spiritline has had a big start to their season. Going full force since June, these ladies have been hard at work preparing for Football and Basketball seasons as well as competition. While attending USA Summer Camp, the Varsity and JV Cheer squad brought home Superior Trophies and all Superior Evaluation Ribbons. In addition, seven cheerleaders were awarded individual All-American Awards and senior Sarah Huff-man was invited to try out for USA staff following graduation. POM honors included winning the spirit award the first night of camp as well as an overall spirit award and all superior evaluation ribbons and trophies. Senior captain Izzie Haelen was selected as an all star and future USA staff candidate. During the week of September 16th, the POM and Cheer squads held their Annual Jr. Jags Cheer camp. Fifty five students in grades kindergarten thru 8th learned a POM dance, cheer, jump techniques, tumbling and stunting. They finished the week off by cheering the first half of the Boulder Creek JV Football game.

November boasts competition season for the Jags. Boulder Creek will be competing in the USA National Qualifier competition on Saturday, November 2nd at Deer Valley High School and the AIA State Qualifier Competition on Saturday November 16th, location TBA.

Best of luck to the Jaguar Spiritline as they continue to represent BC with style and grace both on and off the sidelines during the 2013-2014 season!

Traveling to China was the most unique experience of my life. I had the privilege of seeing the beauti-ful land and architecture and thoroughly exploring the culture through its people. The friendships and bonds I've created both with the people I met that were traveling with me and those who are on the other side of the world are unlike any other. I will never forget my experience in China and I long to go back every time I think about it. I am so grateful

that these opportunities have been given to me.

The Heavenly Scholars Entry Way at the Chinese Cultural Center in Phoenix Arizona is a beautiful gateway into the garden of Chinese statues.

Boulder Creek High School is not only be celebrating its tenth year as a school in Anthem, but Boulder Creek will once again be participating in Anthem’s Veteran’s Day Parade. The parade committee invites all the school’s clubs, sports teams, the marching band and our dance classes to join in the fun. We invite everyone to come out and join us during this grand event. Remember to wear your RED, White, and BLUE and make this year’s parade the best pa-rade ever. It is not too late to create your signs, ban-ners, and dress up for this fun filled day of honoring all our veterans. The date is Saturday, November 9th. YOUTH TRANSITION PROGRAM

The 1st month of the YTP Transition Skills Class has gone by fast. Students have not only begun to explore their interests and

skills, but the students have also begun to align their possible chosen careers with the their interests/skills. Students will continue

to research their top two careers by participating in job shadows and completing informational interviews. We have also been

learning about career clusters, self-advocacy, decision-making process and disclosure. During the 1st half-day release, some stu-

dents volunteered at the Desert Mission Food Bank. Students participated in an orientation where they selected their job for the

entire school year. Other YTP students not involved in the Desert Mission Food Bank will have opportunities throughout the year

to volunteer and gain job readiness skills for example Wicked Holiday Run on Oct 27, Special Olympics Caddy on Nov 11, Salvation

Army Bell Ring on Nov 30 or 6th Annual Holiday Festival on Dec 14. Lastly, students were introduced to the senior portfolio pro-

ject which is a culmination of Vocational Rehabilitation (VR) required research to support the student Individual Plan for Employ-

ment. The senior portfolio due date is Thursday, April 24, 2014.

RECOGNITION PROGRAMS AT BCHS

We have so many hard working and excelling students at Boulder Creek High School. It is important that we recognize the achievements that these students are making. We have several recognition programs at BCHS, including the programs listed below. It is important to recognize the efforts of our students and to celebrate these important achievements. If you would like to

make a donation to support these worthy programs, please stop by the bookstore. Your support will be tremendously appreciated!

BC WAY Award: Each quarter, teachers submit the names of students who have exhibited strength of character, positive growth

and achievement, and model the principles of the BC Way. The students and their families are treated to a ceremony and a breakfast.

Renaissance Cords: Each semester students who earn excellent grades are awarded a cord which is to be saved and worn at

their graduation ceremony. The cords are distributed in the semester following the semester the cord was earned. Gold cords are re-ceived by students earning all A’s and honor B’s and have a 4.0 or better. Silver cords are given to students earning all A’s, B’s, and honor C’s with a 4.0 or better. Student who boast a 3.5 to 3.9 GPA with all A’s, B’s, and honor C’s will be awarded a black cord and those with a 3.0-3.4 GPA with all A’s, B’s, and honor C’s will earn a white cord.

AIMS Medal: All seniors who have exceeded all three AIMS tests will be given a gold medal to wear at graduation. Seniors who

have exceeded two AIMS tests will receive a silver medal and those who have exceeded on one of the AIMS test will earn a bronze medal.

Water for Our World!

In April, 2012, Interact Club led the "Water For Our World" fund raiser at BCHS. Interact distributed empty milk jugs to class rooms to collect "change 4 change". Jaguars raised a total of $1516.83 for the building of wells and purchasing water filtration systems in Tanza-nia! Thank you Jaguars for making a world of a difference for clean drinking water!! We will look forward to another successful fund raiser this Spring.

High school is a time of transition for our students, your children. As they move toward high school graduation they transform into adults. Part of our mission here at Boulder Creek High School is to prepare all students to become productive, responsible and contributing citizens. The students must determine who they want to be as a start to their preparation for all that awaits them beyond high school. The program that focuses entirely on these

two goals for all BC students is called Pathways.

The program for all grade levels includes new custom designed lessons this year that were developed for BC students using their feedback. In addition to the grade-level tailored introduction, closure, and AZCIS computer lab sessions, new lessons were developed to respond to students’ needs for aca-demic and social success, along with preparing for life after graduation. On the following pages is data from the students’ pre-survey responses dur-

ing this year’s introductory Pathways session.

Students currently in their freshman, sophomore, or junior year will participate in sessions on character building, conflict, resolution, social learning, and time management. Freshmen and sophomore students will also get tips on developing study stills. Specialty sessions this year include a student activities fair and transcripts revealed lesion for freshmen, a CTE fair for sophomores including presenters from each of the West-MEC and DVUSD ca-reer programs, and an industry fair along with a test comparison lesson for juniors. The seniors’ lessons are completely unique this year and cover picking their paths, virtual tours of post-secondary campuses, and paying for post-secondary pursuits—including completing the FAFSA. At the core of each lesson is preparing students to be productive, responsible and contributing citizens who intentionally purse their personal vision for themselves

beyond high school.

The Pathways program meets once a month (Aug 22, Sept 12, Oct 3 & 31, Nov 21, Jan 16 & 30, Feb 20, Mar 6, Apr 3 & 24) using the school’s alternative bell schedule. On your child’s Power School account, there Pathways teacher is listed as their period eight. Please email them with questions or con-cerns you may have about your child’s Pathways experience. This is important step toward preparing the students at Boulder Creek High School to lead

productive lives is a team effort. We can better prepare them with Everyone United. Go Jag Nation!!!

Online and Charter School Courses

For students behind on credits or for those students wanting to get ahead, the BCHS counseling department advises students to proceed with caution when choosing Online and Charter School Courses. Before enrolling in any online or charter school course you MUST have the course approved by your counselor to insure that your credits will transfer. Counselors can provide you with information regarding

the number of credits which can be transferred and which schools are approved and accredited.

teacher conferences on October 17th at 4:30 PM. See topics to be covered below and register for the 6 week

AZ Parents Connect: This one hour presentation is for parents and caregivers about current drug trends, why some children

are more vulnerable to substance use, teen brain and best parenting practices for preventing underage drinking and drug

use. This presentation can be done online or in person.

Kim Obert, Program Manager for DrugFreeAz.org. Kim is well acquainted with the pain of substance abuse. Her 18 year old

son, Kent died of an accidental prescription drug overdose in 2003. Blindsided by the event, Kim felt a strong desire to help

other parents avoid the same pain, and in 2006 began volunteering with the Partnership and helping other parents under-

stand the dangers of substance abuse, especially prescription drug abuse. In July of 2010, Kim joined the staff full time. She

is one of the original 3 moms. Kim serves on the Parent Advisory Board for the national Partnership at DrugFree.org and is

also a Parent Ambassador for the national office. Kim is a certified trained facilitator for Guiding Good Choices, Active Par-

enting Now! and Active Parenting of Teens, evidence based parenting workshops.

Active Parenting of Teens: These workshops combine video, activities and discussion to help parents raise responsible chil-

dren who are able to resist negative peer pressure. The programs demonstrate non-violent discipline techniques and effec-

tive encouragement skills. Active Parenting of Teens is for parents of 12 through 18 years old and will be held in the mini-

auditorium October 24, 31, November 7, 14, 21, and Dec 5th from 6:30-8:30.

What is Positive Behavioral Interventions and Support?

The Boulder Creek community continually strives to improve our campus environment by promoting positive relationships be-tween students, parents and staff. Our PBIS team is hard at work taking professional development training so that we can cre-ate the culture that we want for our school. Throughout this year, the PBIS Team will be asking students, staff, and our commu-

nity for information and feedback. We want your input!

One of the foremost advances in school-wide discipline is the emphasis on school-wide systems of support that include pro-

active strategies for defining, teaching, and supporting appropriate student behaviors to create positive school environ-

ments. Instead of using a piecemeal approach of individual behavioral management plans, a continuum of positive behav-

ior support for all students within a school is implemented in areas including the classroom and non-classroom settings

(such as hallways, buses, and restrooms). Attention is focused on creating and sustaining primary (school-wide), secondary

(classroom), and tertiary (individual) systems of support that improve lifestyle results (personal, health, social, family,

work, recreation) for all children and youth by making targeted behaviors less effective, efficient, and relevant, and de-

BC Athletics

Winter Sport try outs start November 4, 20123 (Basketball, Soccer, and Wrestling)

Eligibility:

Academic progress for participants is checked EACH week. A partici-

pant will be declared INELIGIBLE if he or she receives two consecutive

weekly notices of failure from the SAME CLASS. The period of ineligibility

will continue until the student-athlete’s grade is passing. At the coach’s

discretion, ineligible players may continue to practice; however, they

MAY NOT compete in any events. Eligibility is checked every Thursday;

which is applicable for the following Monday through Saturday.

This year is off to a great start with our Fall athletic program. There have been a lot of exciting things happening such as the big win against Desert Vista in Varsity Football, Girls golf taking 1st place at the Northwest Early Classic, Boys golf qualifying for the State tournament, Girls Badminton winning their first var-sity match in BC history, Girls Volleyball’s big win at Pinnacle and Cross Country’s strong showing the Adobe playoffs. We have some new things that have been happening with BC Athletic department. We would like to officially welcome Mrs. Tina Binns as the athletic secretary. She has been with us since the end of August and has been doing a fabulous job. We have created the PRIDE committee that is made of the captains of the sport teams for that season. We also have agreed to create a season sports calendar that will be available to the public starting during the Winter Sports season. This calendar will feature the schedules of all the teams competing in the Winter Sports as well as some photos of some of the athletes. We are excited about the changes and look forward to continuing to improve in the future. Let’s continue to show our support for our teams not only for the Fall but for the upcoming Winter and Spring Seasons.

LADY JAGS SOFTBALL

Boulder Creek would like to welcome the return

of Coach Evah Taylor as the head softball

coach. She returned to the program last year

for 2013 season and the jaguar team ended a

successful season with a 17 wins 14 loss record.

Coach Taylor previously coached the Jaguars

2007-2010 seasons. During that stint the Varsity program competed in state three

consecutive years and in 2009 ended the season one game shy of competing for the

state title in 5A division II. Coach Taylor believes in building character in her pro-

gram while teaching athletes the responsibility of work ethic to develop fundamen-

tal skills to compete successfully on the softball field and in everyday life.

GIRLS GOLF NEWS:

The Girl’s golf team has won

their first tournament in the

last 5 years at the Northwest

Early Classic at Bellair this Sep-

tember. They shot a team

total of 284 to beat Deer Val-

ley by six strokes. They were

lead by senior Shayla Norgaard with a score of 69 on the

two day event. Following Shayla was sophomore Joelie

Bennett with a 72, junior Morgan Smith with a 73, fresh-

man Ally Weber with a 74, and junior Meredith Mrok with

92. We finished up the two days event with a state qualify-

ing score and the team only needs two more to compete at

Boulder Creek’s Healthy Living Committee exists to enhance awareness and promote a healthy campus

community in which to live, learn, teach, work, or visit. Our objectives are: -To advance a high performing, healthy living culture at Boulder Creek

-To provide ongoing wellness and educational opportunities for the school and local community

-To showcase and promote practices and programs that foster a healthy lifestyle both now and in the future.

This year the team has chosen nine monthly themes. Themes will be highlighted around the school for one month, each focusing on the importance of

making positive life choices. The nine themes are: September- Bullying, October- Safe Driving, November- Drug Awareness, December- Proper

Nutrition, January- Exercise, February- Healthy Relationships, March- Good Sleeping Habits, April- Prevention Convention, May- Working towards

a Healthy Future

NURSE’S CORNER Please be aware that for infection control reasons, students will no longer be allowed to lie down in the nurse's office unless they are being sent home for medical reasons by the nurse. The health office must be reserved as an area of isolation for ill students. Students who present with fatigue, mild headaches, stomach discomfort, etc will be treated if possible and returned to class. Thank you for your understanding of this important procedure.

Please keep your student home if they have ANY of the following symptoms:

Fever >100 degrees— must be fever free X 24 hours without the use of meds to return

Body aches or chills

Productive cough with colored phlegm

Vomiting

Red eyes with drainage, sensitivity to light or swelling

If your student has been diagnosed with a condition, information concerning this condition needs to be signed by a physician and sent to the nurse so it is available in their file. For example, migraine headaches.

home? The library subscribes to an amazing number of databases that are aggregates of

information, many of them having full text magazine and journal articles. Our databases are

good sources for car repair and maintenance information; for practice test and study guides

for the most common tests for school and career; for the latest news stories from here and

around the world; for information about books and authors including book discussion guides;

for genealogy resources; for actually learning a foreign language. How do you access the databases and the wealth of information that they contain? From the

library’s home page, www.mcldaz.org , and click on Research. You will see the choices e-

Sources, A - Z List, Subjects, and For Educators. If you select subjects, you will see all the

subject areas that the databases cover. The A – Z List will give you an alphabetical list of the

72 databases. All of the databases can be accessed from home, going through the library’s

home page, with the exception of Ancestry Library. You will be asked for your library card number and PIN after you have selected one of the databases. (In the library, you don’t have
