WEEKEND OF July 04/05
Things I Wish Jesus Hadn’t Said…
… Heaven is Closed to Some.
Only those who do God’s will shall enter the kingdom
of heaven. We can say that we believe, that we love
God and are a disciple of Jesus, but “the proof of the
pudding is in the eating.” How do we demonstrate our
faith by the individual actions that make up our lives?
Together, they weave a tapestry that reveals the
picture of our life. What image do we reveal?
James 1:22-25
Matthew 7:21-23

Joyful Living A SERMON SERIES ON PHILIPPIANS
JULY 12-AUG 23 MEDITATION: WHEN PAUL WROTE HIS LETTER TO THE PHILIPPIANS, HE WAS LANGUISHING IN PRISON – TALK ABOUT A TOUGH
SETTING! NEVERTHELESS, HE TOLD THEM (AMONG OTHER THINGS) TO “REJOICE IN THE LORD, ALWAYS!” (4:4) AND ABOUT HOW HE HAD LEARNED TO BE CONTENT IN ALL CIRCUMSTANCES (4:11). ARE HIS WORDS LITTLE MORE THAN A FIRST CENTURY VERSION OF
BOBBY MCFERRIN’S 1988 JINGLE “DON’T WORRY, BE HAPPY”? TRUE, WE MAY NOT BE FACING JAIL TIME, BUT WE CERTAINLY HAVE MORE THAN OUR FAIR SHARE OF TRIALS THESE DAYS: CORONAVIRUS, COMMUNITY SOCIAL UNREST, FAMILY STRESSES, ECONOMIC
UNCERTAINTIES, INTERNATIONAL SQUABBLES TO NAME A FEW. WHAT CAN WE LEARN FROM PAUL’S LETTER ABOUT THE JOY-FILLED LIVING HE DESCRIBES? WHAT DIFFERENCE MIGHT THIS TYPE OF LIFE MAKE FOR US AND FOR THE COMMUNITY GOD HAS
CALLED US TO SERVE? WHILE OUR FOCUS WILL BE ON PAUL’S LETTER, OUR ADDITIONAL READINGS EACH WEEK WILL COMPLIMENT PAUL’S TEACHINGS AND HELP US APPLY THEM IN OUR FAITH JOURNEY.

Adalynne Robbins Gold Award Project 2020 About the project I'm a sophomore at Noblesville High School and have been a member of Bethel Lutheran Church for nine years. The project that I am working towards is my Girl Scout Gold Award (equivalent to an Eagle Scout Project). My project will be providing cleaning, school, and health kits for people to use after disasters hit their homes and communities. Detailed information may be found on the project webpage on the Bethel website. I will be partnering with the NALC and their disaster relief program that you can donate to now and beyond my donating time this summer. I will be accepting donations July 12th through the 25th and will be hosting a “Stuff the Truck” event where we package the kits and help load them into a truck that will go to warehouses around the country. This will take place on August 2 and I will need volunteers to help. Even though our world is in a time of crisis, natural disasters are still happening and people need our help. If you are a Girl Scout and want to contact me about service hours for volunteers or have any questions, please contact me through the project webpage. Here is the link for the webpage on the Bethel website:

Matthew 7:7 Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find, knock and the door will be opened.
We have an IMMEDIATE NEED for help in the Food Pantry. Our coordinator; Sandy Hanke, will be out of commission for 6 weeks for surgery, so we need people who will step up to maintain the pantry until she returns. Covid-19 still has many people reluctant to get out but there are several places you can help safely…
We are getting this contribution of beef in August and we would like to ask for Money Contributions from the congregation to help HCH
Food Bank… however small they may be. We have promised HCH $250 toward this so we hope to receive that much in contributions.
We will also need someone to volunteer to pick the meat up on August 8 and get it to the church.
1. The second Thursday of the month we get up to 600 pounds of food from Hamilton Country Harvest Foodbank (by White River Church). We have a time window so you can pick the time that is convenient for you. If we cannot find anyone to do the pickup we will have to discontinue the food pantry for the months of July and August.
2. Because we are still in the covid phase, we need 3 people to run the pantry each Wednesday and Saturday while we are open, we need people to help with this as well.
This is a 6 week commitment from July to mid-August. We ask that you prayerfully consider helping to keep our pantry open.
RESOURCES:
CHURCH OFFICE: The church office is now operating with normal
business hours Tuesday through Friday but the
office is still not open. Staff comes and goes
throughout the week so visitors will need to
make arrangements and deliveries and drop offs
will have to be arranged with the staff. If
things are left unattended at the doors they
may be put into the dumpster.
ONLINE WEEKEND SERVICE VIDEOS: Our Online Weekend Services are posted on the website and on Facebook.
CALLING AND RESPONSE TEAM: Our Calling Team is reaching out to members and
regular attenders every 14-20 days; expect your
call soon. Feel free to share with that caller any
prayer concerns you might have or any hands-on
needs with which our Response Team might assist.
Click here for current worship service videos
including this week’s Healing Service… CHURCH
SERMON VIDEOS
CARE TEAM: The Care Team, Pastor Doug, and Pastor Al will continue to be available for pastoral care, either in person or by phone.
VIRTUAL GROUP MEETINGS: Small groups who wish to continue to meet may use online group collaboration tools (Google Hangouts, Zoom, Skype, etc.) to meet “virtually”.

UPDATES ON OUR STAFF SEARCHES

During his address at a 1999 Leadership Network event in Dallas, Bob Buford said,
“I think that God will ask us two questions when we get to heaven:
1. What did you do with Jesus?
2. What did you do with what I gave you to work with?”
Each Christian has two conversions. In our first conversion we say,
“I accept Jesus Christ.” That is what Jesus was saying to Nichodemus: “You must be born again.”
(John 3:7) This is the conversion of our heart, and it is the beginning of our faith journey.
In our second conversion we commit to begin using the gifts God gave us for ministry at and beyond
the church. This is the conversation of our calendars, credit cards, and checkbooks – the things
that matter most in our lives. One need only refer to these to see what we value most. How we
spend our time and treasure shows most clearly what we consider important. That is what the book
of James says, “Faith without works is dead.” (2:17,26)
We can say we have faith, but if our life doesn’t reflect that faith perspective, then it calls into
question the depth of that faith. Faith that is real faith does more than accept a free gift from God.
Faith that is genuine faith uses what God gives you to help spread God’s Kingdom and to serve
other people. I’m so grateful this is our perspective at Bethel!
