ART concerts have become a musical destination for ALL of Greater Cleveland to celebrate, providing the opportunity Arts Renaissance Tremont’s 29th Season! for everyone to experience Northern Ohio’s finest live performance. ART attracts thousands to hear world-class local musicians – providing a forum for exceptional pre-professionals, conservatory faculty and professionals from Cleveland’s rich community of freelance artists and members of our renowned Cleveland Orchestra. Home is the magnificent, historic landmark Pilgrim Congregational United Church of Christ located at 2592 West 14th St. Arts Renaissance Tremont was founded in 1991 to enhance the quality and diversity of life in Tremont by providing the fine arts a greater presence in the community. In addition to establishing a venue for artists to share their talent, our goals are to promote the use of this magnificent space, support the rebirth of the Tremont neighborhood, create community and foster greater appreciation for the arts through accessible artistic programs. Pilgrim Congregational United Church of Christ was built in 1893. The building is an excellent example of Richardsonian Romanesque architecture. The interior design, known as the Akron Plan, was an innovative concept in use of space, allowing rooms to open onto other rooms. The sanctuary, or auditorium, as it was called when constructed, features Tiffany- style stained glass windows and ceiling dome. The excellent acoustics make the sanctuary a magnificent environment for music. Early Cleveland orchestral ensembles – forerunners to The Cleveland Orchestra – used this auditorium for their rehearsal and concert hall. Wednesday evening, December 17, 1919, 8:00, Nikolai Sokoloff conducted a performance of The Cleveland Orchestra in this auditorium. In 1992, the Holtkamp Organ Company restored the original Ferrand-Votey Organ. For additional information about this historic building, please call the church office: 216.861.7388. PARKING is available in the adjacent church lots, across the street and directly behind the church building. With funding from ArcelorMittal, Tremont West Development is starting an exciting new effort to build a safer neighborhood, and we need YOU!

IT STARTS WITH IDEAS: We know that Tremont residents have great ideas for creating a safer and more connected neighborhood! Community meetings hosted as part of Tremont Speaks will serve as the perfect place to share those ideas, and connect with neighbors to grow those ideas into full fledged projects! Mirrors, lights, signs , classes, whatever you think will make Tremont Safer.

EVERYONE GETS A VOICE: Those projects will then be posted on line, and shared in the community so that everyone has a chance to see them! During this time people across the neighborhood will vote on the projects they think will build a stronger and safer Tremont.

THEN THE WORK BEGINS: Those projects with the most votes will be funded, until all the money is allocated. Then Tremont West will work to make those projects happen.

WHAT’S NEXT: In the next month we will begin hosting community meetings to go over the process, and start gathering ideas and connecting neighbors. For more information, and to make sure you get all the

updates, visit NearWestSafety.org/TremontSpeaks or reach out to

If you are a fan of Indian cuisine in Cleveland, you’ve probably been to Tandul on Professor Avenue. Owner Mack Patel opened Tremont’s fi rst and only Indian restaurant in Tremont back in 2015. Four years later and Patel is on the verge of bringing more of his unique fl avors to the neighborhood in the form a Salsarito, an Indo-Mexican style restaurant that showcases Mexican dishes with Indian fl are in the form of samplers and affordable dishes. Salsarito, at 2391 West 11th Street, plans to open on the 1st of October with the goal of remaining in their new location forever. Most businesses begin with that intention, but seven different restaurants have come and gone in the location adjacent from Lincoln Park since 2000. Most recently, Merchant Street, a Mediterranean and European Bistro, inhabited the venue. Patel is confi dent that his team and his head chef, Ritesh, are up for the challenge. The menu, described by Patel as Mexican cuisine with Indian spicing, is highlighted by various samplers. Visitors can order guacamole, salsa, and margarita samplers in addition to their complimentary chips and salsa. Guacamole varieties include corn guac, bean guac, pineapple and red onion guac, bacon guac, and chicken tikka guac. For those who enjoy more spice, a salsa sampler is also available. Salsa styles include pineapple salsa, mango salsa, tomatillos salsa, as well as a house blend with more fl avor and boldness than other salsa verde recipes. Lastly, for those craving sweet tastes, margarita sampler choices include passionfruit, dragonfruit, mango, kiwi, black currant, guava, and blood orange. Looking back at the ever-changing history of the building, Patel is not intimated and hints to one reason why; taste. “Everything on the menu comes down to taste – if you provide unique taste, guests will enjoy their dining experience and return again and again,” said Patel. “Also, this is the best view in Tremont,” Patel continued as he pointed out the front windows at Lincoln Park. Salsarito will also add patio seating next year. The tastes of Salsarito were inspired by Patel’s family, the love of Mexican cuisine, and their passion for home cooking. “At home, like most Indian families, we cook lunch and dinner almost every day of the week. When we remake Mexican dishes, we like to feel the spices,” said Patel. “This is our version with an Indian twist,” he continued. Patel and Ritesh used their home kitchen experiences to continually tweak every dish until it had the right Indian spices. The menu will also feature burritos, samosas, nachos, quesadillas, and other Indo-Mex specialties like half pineapple fajitas and falafel. Guest can choose from chicken, beef,

steak, pork, or shrimp. Besides the guacs and salsas, the dishes include unique sauces like sweet chili, enchilada, and of course queso. All options are in the price range of fi ve to twelve dollars. The lunchtime menu will include smaller versions at a discounted price. Salsarito will be open seven days a week from 11 AM through 10 PM. The pricing as well as the twist on Mexican dining are sure to surprise diners this Fall.

Auburn-Lincoln ParkMembers gathered on Monday, September 16th for the Block Club’s monthly meeting. Safety Concerns were addressed with the 2nd District Community Services Officer, Sgt. Philip McClain. Block Club Members also reviewed a presentation by developer, Sam Messina, and Mason Architect + Design, for the Lincoln Park Flats apartments proposed for the former Holy Ghost Byzantine Church parking lot at the corner of W. 14th Street and Kenilworth. As the development is proposed in an “Urban Overlay zone” (a regulatory tool that identifies distinctive development provisions in addition to those in the underlying base zone), no variances were being sought by the developer, but members were given the opportunity to comment on the design and over-all proposal. A proposed demolition of the rectory (housing that the Byzantine Church provided for priests and nuns) on the lot just south of the parking lot, was discussed and members were asked to support the development as presented. Previously the Local Design Review Committee for the Tremont Historic District asked the Landmarks Commission of the City of Cleveland to deny the demolition request. Following the presentation and after a time of Q & A and discussion, the membership present voted to support the proposed development as presented. The Auburn-Lincoln Park Block Club invites Tremont residents who live on in the area from Kenilworth south to Auburn Avenue (including Fruit Avenue), and from W. 15th St. east to W. 9th St., to attend monthly Block Club meetings on the 3rd Monday of the month. If you are new to Tremont it is a great way to meet your neighbors and engage in safety and community activities. And, in between meetings, you can keep current on what is happening by checking out the Auburn Block Club Facebook page www.Facebook.com/auburnblockclub and Tremont West’s new website at https://experiencetremont.com . For questions about the block club’s meetings or activities, please contact Block Club Co-Chairs, Kate O’Neil ([email protected]) and Jonathan Petrea ([email protected]) – or Community Involvement Manager, Scott Rosenstein, at Tremont West at 216.575.0920 ext. 106 or e-mail [email protected]. . The next meeting is scheduled for October Monday, October 21st - 6:30 pm at Rose Mary Center (corner of W. 14th Street & Kenilworth).

Central TremontThe Central Tremont Block Club gathered on Monday, September 9, 2019 at the Polish Veterans Alliance. On the agenda was a review of an elevation on Tremont Avenue and the block club voted to approve. The next block club meeting will he held on Monday, October 7th at 6:30pm at the Polish Alliance Hall (2234 Professor Avenue). For more information on the block club and its activities, please contact Co-chairs Jeffery Buysse ([email protected]) or Julie Goulis ([email protected]). Information can also be found on our Facebook page at www.facebook.com/CentralTremont.

Duck IslandThe Duck Island Block Club met on Tuesday, September 3rd at Forest City Brewery. Lt. Michael Betley came to talk about safety concerns in the neighborhood. 44 cadets will be graduating in mid-September and a portion of those will be assigned to the Second District. LED lights and cameras are being installed in various parts of the city. They have the ability to light up an area if there’s an incident. A representative from Tri-C came to talk about the tax levy renewal that will be on the ballot in November. Tri-C was formed through a voter-approved levy in 1963. There are currently 51,000 students attending, and Tri-C 2nd highest bond rating for a college in the state. 48% of funding comes from tax revenue, and it is the most affordable college in the State of Ohio. The renewal levy with a .4 mil increase will be less costly to tax payers than a replacement levy. A question was asked about what the extra 20% will be put towards, and while there will be no additional programs, they will continue to prioritize what will be funded. The Chair asked if there were any objections to voting for the logos next month, as the turnout for the meeting was on the low side. Logos will be used for t-shirts, cozies, magnets, etc., as well as flags for light poles and signs for the entrances to the neighborhood. Resident Philip Major presented the plan for adding a garage to his home, and some questions were asked about the design, particularly whether the garage entrance could be moved to the side or the back of the lot. DIGS Committee Report: The annual Party in the Park had about 100 people, Elaine Borawski wanted to thank Carolyn, Molly, Elizabeth and Melanie from the planning committee. The state of the event planning may be at the point where the party planning can be done by a separate committee from DIGS. Elaine asked whether there was still interest in periodically cleaning the alleyway between W 20th St and Columbus Ave. There was enthusiasm for continuing to clean it up. The next DIGS meeting will be scheduled for early October. A quick speech was made about

maintaining congeniality among neighbors and communicating directly with neighbors to maintain relationships when problems arise, rather than immediately reaching out to City Departments. For more information on the block club and its activities, please contact Chair, Milton Lorring ([email protected]) & Co-Chair Rick Warren ([email protected]) or Scott at Tremont West ([email protected]) – 216.575.0920 ext. 106. Please join us for our next meeting on Tuesday, October 1st, 6:30pm at Forest City Brewery! Bring a neighbor and join us!

Holmden Buhrer Rowley/ Mentor Castle ClarkHBR-MCC gathered on Wednesday, September 4th. Lt. Betley addressed the Block Club with a general safety update. The City is planning on installing LED lights/cameras at locations TBD around the City. Brightness can be adjusted if residents have concerns. A resident noted that she has noticed individuals cutting through the BP at the corner of W. 14th and Clark in order to avoid construction. A representative from Tri-C was present to discuss their ongoing programming and an upcoming levy renewal and upgrade which will be on the ballot. Tri-C is a voter friendly campus and has non-partisan information available and to assist with looking up information. Programs discussed were Workforce Certificates, Veterans, and Women in Transition, Encore, and Cultural events and Traditional Studies. Block Club members discussed the W. 11th Street traffic pattern and next steps. It was determined that the group should move forward in discussing with councilman and a city engineer to determine next steps and potential to a survey of the area traffic. The “Bridging the Gap” project was discussed and a group of Block Club members is meeting to discuss re-engaging Sherwin Williams and to try to finalize costs and paint decisions for the painting of the bridge. Announcements made related to the upcoming Tremont Arts and Culture Fest which has free admission. The next formal block club meeting will resume on Wednesday, October 2nd at 6:30pm at Pozo Studio. To learn more about our block clubs and their activities, find us on Facebook or contact MCC Co-Chairs Josh Wright ([email protected]),Beverly Wurm ([email protected]), HBR Co-Chair Angelica Pozo ([email protected]) or Dharma Valentin, Community and Equity Organizer – [email protected] – 216.575.0920 ext. 102.

Many thanks to our hosts, Eric and Briana Ishida, for opening up their lawn and home to us – and for their very gracious hospitality. Many thanks as well to Chris Roy, our Grill Master. Great job, Chris! Thanks as well to all who attended and all who brought food and beverages to share. Fall is a busy time for Tremont activities. We took a short break in September and did not hold a business meeting. We will gather again in October, and have invited the Metroparks and the Towpath Trail folks to update us on progress and construction timing. meeting on Tuesday, October 15th, 6:30pm. We look forward to seeing you!

South of JeffersonSouth of Jefferson Block Club held its meeting on Tuesday, September 10th at Post 58. Sgt. Phil McClain of the 2nd District Community Services Unit introduced himself. He is replacing Sgt. Tim Maffo-Judd who was promoted to Lieutenant. Sgt. McClain provided some safety updates and noted several recent robberies in the area that are being investigated. He also provided a brief overview on the importance of filing a police report when a crime occurs, even the smaller things, even if you think nothing will come of it. Statistics are being generated from those police reports to guide police deployment decisions. If crimes are not reported, the department doesn’t officially know about it and will move resources to areas where issues are being formally reported. (As a side note, when you file a report, you are to receive a report number at that time. If the Officer refuses or states it is not available, politely insist, and take their name and report it to Chad Biggers, TWDC Safety Coordinator. The Commander wants to know if/when this is happening!) A representative from Tri-C promoted their upcoming levy renewal initiative. The levy provides 25% of the college’s operating budget and maintains tuition affordability. Plans were presented for a new construction single family home on Thurman Ave. As this project was not formally on this month’s meeting agenda, and required notifications to adjacent and neighboring properties were not able to be made as required by this block club’s by-laws, a vote was not taken at this time. The project will be officially considered in October. Efforts continue for the Lucky Park Mural. Deb Smith is still waiting on the St. Theodosius Church Council to be able to hear the project presentation seeking their approval as property owner. TWDC Executive Director Cory Riordan has encouraged the Council to make time for this request. Monthly park clean-ups continue the 3rd Tuesday of each month (early evening). The block club’s annual School Supply Drive continues, with this year’s focus on Tremont Montessori’s gym class. Thanks to Tim Harrison for coordinating the effort. We thank Mendo Veloff for serving as the block club’s Ex-Officio Director for the past year. The block club will accept nominations for a new candidate in October. For more information on the block club and its activities, visit our Facebook page, and contact our Co-Chairs, Deb Smith at [email protected] and Greg Kobe at [email protected] or Community Involvement Manager Scott Rosenstein at Tremont West – 216.575.0920 ext. 106. Our next meeting is Tuesday, October 8th, 6:30PM at Post 58 (Professor Ave), 2nd floor. All are welcome to join us.

Tremont Arts & Cultural FestivalThe Festival was held on Saturday and Sunday, September 28th & 29th in Tremont’s Lincoln Park. For an update on this year’s wonderful Festival, please see updates in the November issue of Inside Tremont along with photos. The Tremont Festival will return to Lincoln Park on Saturday & Sunday, September 19th & 20th, 2020. Visit www.tremontartsfestival.com for more information. Of Note: this was the second year for the special four-year series: Focus on the Artists – which spotlights and celebrates minority and under-represented artists that contribute greatly to our community and NE Ohio. The inaugural year of the series, 2018, featured Sin Fronteras/Beyond Borders: Celebrating Latino Visual and Performing Artists in Cleveland and NE Ohio to wide acclaim. This year’s spotlight also included LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender) artists in a special Freedom and Love: 50th Anniversary of the Stonewall Uprising exhibition featuring special galleries for the series’ Established and Emerging LGBT Artists. We also welcomed the return of Sin Fronteras/Beyond Borders: Celebrating Latino Visual and Performing Artists in Cleveland and NE Ohio. Thanks to our program presenters: Merrick House, Tremont West Development, Young Latino Network, Julia de Burgos Cultural Arts Center, AIDS Taskforce of Greater Cleveland, and the LGBT Community Center of Greater Cleveland. The Festival’s focus has always been on diversity; however, this series is about populations of artists. The artwork needs to meet standards of artistic excellence, but there is no specific topic or theme for the artwork. We’re focusing on the people creating the art. Similar formats will be followed for African/African-American/Afro-Caribbean and Middle Eastern visual and performing artists in 2020 and 2021 respectively. For more info on the special series and the 2020 Festival, contact Scott Rosenstein, Tremont Festival Manager at [email protected].

Fellow Tremont neighbors, the last market of 2019 is October 8th. We were fortunate this year to have overall good weather and quality vendors for most of our run. There were a few days when there was admittedly less than ideal weather and we did not achieve some of our goals, but overall I am happy to have been a part of this 14th year of the TFM. Please allow me to thank everyone who made this year happen. First I would like to say thanks to the customers who came week after week to support local farmers, local business and local enterprise. Without you we have no purpose. And to the many great vendors who ‘trudged thru’ even when skies were grey and rain was falling, even though some days were chilly or much too hot, they showed up, set up and did their best to provide the neighborhood a variety of not only fresh produce but also meat, prepared foods, interesting products, art and other things every week. We thank them for their commitment to Tremont and the market. Thanks also to the vendors who came and ‘gave it a try,’ who may not have stayed the entire year but had enough faith in our neighborhood and market to at least be with us for a short while. To all of TWDC, its members, board and staff for supporting the market in so many ways. I would especially like to thank the (very patient) Angelica Pozo who worked with me all season and did so much that needed to be done and to our summer intern assistant, Maria Sharp, who contributed much to the market during her short tenure. Thanks to the many musicians who performed at this years market. They provided free music in the park every Tuesday all summer long, we sincerely hope we brought a few smiles to our guests. Thanks to Prosperity Social Club who sponsored the Music Stage, as well as all of those who supported the market this year by their general sponsorships.

There were many goals I wanted to achieve this year, some were met and honestly some were not. I have learned in life to aim high and if one misses the mark sometimes on the first try it is better not to be disillusioned but to simply just go forward and try again. What was not achieved this year may be attainable next year. Lastly I know there is always a better way. There is always room to improve. Perhaps there should be changes to the Tremont Farmers Market, our community is why it exists, our community input should steer it forward. I encourage your input as we end the 14th year and plan on year 15 in 2020. Feel free to send a suggestion to [email protected]. Again, Thank you for an opportunity to help. Hope to be seeing you

The City Planning Commission passed several small code changes that went in to effect in July 2019. The goals of the changes were to:

1. Produce better outcomes by-right in the neighborhoods;

2. Reduce permitting time for new construction and rehab; and

3. Clarify clunky language in the zoning code.

The result of this will be less projects that fit the current context of the neighborhood to require variances at the Board of Zoning Appeals. New Wayfi nding Signage Arrives in Tremont Thanks to Destination Cleveland

As stated in Tremont West’s Tremont Towpath Integration Plan, Tremont West invited Destination Cleveland to install their wayfi nding signage throughout Tremont to welcome our new visitors coming on the Towpath Trail. For about a month you have seen little yellow boxes fi xed to the sidewalk throughout the neighborhood. These boxes are now host to the wayfi nding signs. In 2012, Destination Cleveland began working with Applied Wayfi nding out of London, England to produce the Wayfi nding Master Plan for Downtown Cleveland. In 2015, 4 prototype signs were installed and tested, and in 2016, 54 signs installed in Downtown Cleveland and 4 at Cleveland Hopkins International Airport. In that same year, signage was integrated into University Circle, GCRTA’s HealthLine, as well as Destination Cleveland’s publications and digitally at map.thisiscleveland.com. For those that haven’t seen the signs around the city, this wayfi nding program utilizes a heads-up mapping system, which allows the viewer to see what is in front of them. In 2018, Destination Cleveland began working with various neighborhoods to install the wayfi nding signage. As a result, signs were installed in the Detroit Shoreway, Shaker Square and the Van Aken District. We are excited to welcome 7 signs to Tremont this year. An additional sign will be installed after the completion of the Towpath

Stage 4 sometime in 2021. This wayfi nding program is a huge investment in Tremont from our partner, Destination Cleveland. We truly appreciate their support in bringing this new resource to the neighborhood.
