EcoTherm develops, manufactures and markets
Polyisocyanurate Rigid Thermal Insulation Boards.
In addition to our standard range of products we
also produce speciality products.
EcoTherm rigid insulation boards are produced in both the UK and The Netherlands
for the UK market. Rigorous quality control procedures are in place in both
production facilities.
EcoTherm products are recognised for their compressive strength and dimensional
stability which makes them ideally suited to flat and pitched roof construction, wall
insulation and for floors and ceilings.
All these applications are supported at every stage with comprehensive technical
advice and customer service.
PIR foam insulation materials may be considered to be the most sustainable, in that they do not affect the ozone layer and they perform for the life of the building without loss of performance. See page 6.

Insulation
Meeting the insulation demands of Building Regulations
In the past, understanding how to meet the
requirements of Building Regulations for thermal
insulation was relatively straightforward. A table
would tell you the U-value that needed to be
achieved for a particular floor, wall or roof and the
manufacturer could then tell you what thickness
of insulation you needed to achieve that value.
As green issues and the threat of global warming
have come to the top of the agenda, however,
the approach has changed and the requirements
have not only become tougher, but also harder to
put into a simple formula.
The current Part L of the Building Regulations
(Conservation of Fuel and Power) came into effect
in 2006 and represents the Government’s response
to the EU’s Energy Performance of Buildings
Directive. It applies to all new buildings – dwellings
and commercial – as well as building work on
existing buildings.
The new requirements mean developers have to
use more energy saving insulation, more efficient
boilers and low or zero carbon systems to
demonstrate compliance.
PIR based insulation boards offer many advantages
in meeting these requirements as they have a high
thermal insulation factor per unit mass and an
extremely long performance life.
Their light weight means they can be easily
used with modern construction methods,
while their durability means that the building
performs to the required level of energy efficiency
throughout its life – without the need for resource-
consuming replacements.
On new buildings Part L sets overall performance
standards rather than laying down particular ways
of achieving them. The old Elemental Method and
Target U-Value approach of determining whether a
building is compliant are no longer allowed.
Every new building now has to achieve a Target CO2
Emission Rate (TER) expressed in mass of CO2 per
unit floor area emitted by all the internal heating,
hot water, ventilation and fixed lighting. This is
calculated using either the Government’s Standard
Assessment Procedure (SAP 2005) for dwellings
smaller than 450m2, or the Simplified Building
Energy Model (SBEM) for non-domestic buildings.
EcoT herm appreciates that the removal of the old
step-by-step approach means that it is much harder
to know how to comply. To help our customers
meet these new requirements we are pleased to
offer our technical advice.

For new buildings (England and Wales)
Likely required values and thicknesses to achieve TER
For new dwellings, in accordance with Building Regulations Approved
Document L1A, April 2006, the Dwelling CO2 Emission Rate (DER) must
be no more than the defined Target CO2 Emission Rate (TER). DER and
TER may be calculated by the Standard Assessment Procedure (SAP).
To achieve the most cost-effective DER will generally require 10 – 20
iterations to calculate the permissible U-values for each element of
roof, wall, and floor. Experience shows that it is sensible to start with
the insulation thicknesses shown above in order to minimise the
number of SAP iterations required.
For new buildings and work to existing buildings (Scotland)
For work under Scottish Regulations U-values for each wall, floor or
roof element must be no more than those in the illustration adjacent,
subject to certain other factors (i.e. the total area of doors, windows
and rooflights must be less than 25% of the total floor area and the
boiler or heating appliance must have an efficiency not less than 78%
by SEDBUK calculations).
For all buildings (Scotland) and for work in existing buildings (England and Wales)
Required thicknesses to achieve elemental U-values
For work to existing buildings in accordance with Building Regulations
Approved Document L1B and L2B, U-values for each wall, floor or roof
element must be no more than those in the illustration adjacent.

BRE Green guide 'A' ratedEcoTherm is fundamentally dedicated to environmental responsibility by minimising energy consumption.
Our polyisocyanurate (PIR) products are among the most efficient and effective means of minimising
energy loss from buildings.
EcoTherm has achieved ISO 14001 accreditation; a reflection of the entire organisations commitment to
sustainability through their Environmental Management System.
All our insulation boards are manufactured from CFC- and HCFC-free grades of material which ensure zero ozone
depletion potential (ZERO ODP) and a global warming potential (GWP) factor of 3 which comfortably surpasses the
target of 5 and is BRE Green Guide A rated.
Whenever we use timber, such as in our Eco-Deck laminated roof decking, it is Forest Stewardship Council (FSC)
certified, which gives assurance that it is legal and sustainable at every stage of its chain of custody.
Wide experience supported by accelerated lab tests have proved that PIR insulation boards are among the most
durable construction products.
They will not rot, shrink, absorb moisture, or decay as some fibre board or organic insulation materials may, and so
they will deliver design insulation values throughout the full life of the building. And of course all our products are
recyclable. In practice PIR products have one of the highest ratings for successful recycling.
" Within 8 months users will
have recouped the energy
required to produce the
EcoTherm product in
energy savings."

Length (mm): 1200
Thickness (mm): 25, 30, 35, 40, 45, 50, 55, 60, 70, 75, 100
Design considerations
A minimum 25mm cavity should always be maintained after the installation of EcoTherm Eco-Cavity lining board,
irrespective of the thickness specified. This will avoid problems associated with completely filled cavities.
BS 5628-1: 2005 Code of Practice for structural use of un-reinforced masonry and BS 5628-2: 2005 structural
use of reinforced and pre-stressed masonry should be consulted, NHBC require 50mm residual cavity.
Wall ties
Wall ties should be long enough to provide a minimum 75mm bed into the mortar joints of the inner skin and
50mm into the outer skin mortar bed. The specified ties should conform to BS EN 845-1:2003 and A1:2008
Specification for ancillary components for masonry ties tension straps, hangers and brackets.
Thermal conductivity
The λ value is typically 0.022W/mK, R varies with thickness, and U-value in traditional masonry cavity walls
with a minimum 25mm cavity is as shown below.
