A stay in Bad Ems, by the way, also enables
you to go deep into its history. Numerous
buildings typify its world-renowned spa
architecture, its Roman history – like
the “Limes”, declared a UNESCO World
Heritage site in 2005 – and its German
Romanticism; all invite the visitors on a
journey into a world long past. And there
are so many more ways of experiencing our
W
WWWWculture, through the range of events on offer.
Whether your tastes are classical, cabaret,
for open-air concerts or sports events – there
are activities for every taste.
We take hospitality very seriously – we
can offer a wide range of accommodation:
first class hotels, family-run hotels, comfort-
able guest houses youth hostel, campsites,
parking for motor-homes and even a yacht
marina for boating tourists. This makes Bad
Ems a perfect host for any occasions.
The new thermal bath, the “Emser Therme”,
offers health and wellness in a class of its own.
The modern historically designed Römer-
staße invites for strolling, shopping and
staying. It is the heart of the spa town and
impresses by its unique succession of buildings
from different epochs and architectures. In and
around this elegant promenade for strolling you
can find a lager variety of cafes and restaurants
with regional and international cuisine.
In the heart of the river triangle between the
Rhine, Moselle and Lahn there lies one of
Germany’s most beautiful holiday regions: the
Lahn valley. The traditional health resort Bad
Ems is located right in the very heart of this
poetic landscape . It is one of the oldest spa
resorts in Europe and is considered the
ideal place for fitness and vitality train-
ing, as well as for personalised cures
with ambulatory curative treatments.
Moreover, Bad Ems is a recognised centre for
natural and classical medicine. The Ayurveda
health centre, situated in the spa quarter, for
example, typifies the many types of therapy
on offer in Bad Ems. The specialized clinics in
the heart of the town provide effective reha-
bilitation. Bad Ems, however, offers not only
rehabilitation, but also relaxation, peace, re-
convalescence and the chance of “recharging
your batteries”. The health resort is a per-
fect destination for nature-lovers, lovers
of culture and history, water sports and
a great range of leisure-time activities.

around Bad Ems. Hikers can discover bizarre
rock formations of slate and limestone, nar-
row paths, clear streams or impressive val-
leys, such as the Schweizertal near Miellen,
and can always enjoy the view from the hills
on to the winding river below.
In the mood for a picnic or a snack? Numer-
ous restaurants and inns, right by the river or
up in the hills, invite you to enjoy our regional
cooking and a glass of local wine or beer.
The trails around Bad Ems are well marked.
Information boards at the major starting
points provide information on the area and
remind visitors that they are in the very heart
of Nassau’s wildlife park.
The soul of this unique nature resort is
the medicinal spa paradise of Bad Ems,
a holiday resort which has warmed vis-
itors’ hearts for centuries.
A recovery from everyday life, a time
out from stress, dreaming of being in a
different world – the Lahn valley gives
room for the very personal experience of
a new “slowness”. It is unique, romantic,
yet still so refreshing: the nature surrounding
Bad Ems. A green paradise with imposing
highlands and gentle valleys, framed by the
river Lahn with its quiet, unspoiled meadows
and ecologically rich surroundings. It offers
something for everyone, visitors on excursions
or naturalists, as both can enjoy the peaceful
walks by the river, the relaxing cycle tours and
the fascinating walks through the forest.
Lots of different trails and paths lead uphill
into dense forests with their individual flora
and fauna. All our visitors can enjoy these
special experiences of nature.
Interested in an adventurous trip through a
narrow gorge? This is not a problem in and
The whole Lahn region provides more than
240 kilometres of waterways from the
source of the river to its mouth. There are
numerous landing stages in the peaceful
villages up and down the river. An ideal
holiday location for all kinds of boating
activity – skippers, canoeists, rowers
and paddlers. Professional boat and canoe
rental companies can supply the equipment
you need for your “holidays on the water”.
For those who do not want to explore the
beauties of the river Lahn on their own, there
is the opportunity to book an unforgettable
excursion with one of the very modern cruise
lines. Proximity to the rivers Rhine and Mo-
selle enables visitors to go on the exciting
“Three-Rivers-Tour”.

Harmony of body, soul and spirit Health, wellness and the healing power of natureHealth, wellness and the healing power of nature
The health resort of Bad Ems is among
the best addresses in Europe, when it
comes to escaping from everyday stress
and re-charging your energy levels. On
the one hand this is due to the unique land-
scape of the region; on the other hand it is
due to its wide-ranging wellness offers.
Even in the middle ages and the Renaissance
Bad Ems was one of the most important spas
in Central Europe. Because of its 15 health
springs it is called the “Health Spring Par-
adise”. From a geological point of view the
spa is on a health spring saddle which lets the
healthy water bubble in large quantities. The
“Emser Kränchen” is amongst the best known
springs. Like the kings and emperors in those
days the visitors today can benefit from its
health enhancing effect. The ”Emser Pas-
tille” is the best known product of the health
springs which helps singers and speakers all
over the world to strong voice power.
Nearly no other spa in Germany is so
well-placed in the field of health and
medicine as Bad Ems. This medical com-
petence is reflected by its specialised fa-
cilities. Four rehab clinics, one acute care
hospital and the Ayurveda Health Centre as
well as a number of medical specialists and
spa doctors offer a wide range of services
for therapy and prevention. Here progres-
sive medical methods as well as traditional
therapies are used - on the highest level and
rewarded many times. The “Ambulante Bad
Ems-Kuren” (Ambulant Bad Ems-Cures) are
an example in the fields of orthopaedics and
respiratory diseases.
W
WWWWW
Orthopaedics, cardiology, pneumology,
allergology, sleep medicine and natural
remedy are the respective priorities of the
Hufelandklinik, Helios-Klinik, Lahntalklinik
and Malbergklinik. Some clinics offer the
comfort of hotels. Since 1992 the Ayurveda
Health Centre, which is the most important
European Ayurveda clinic with an outstand-
ing standard, has been offering traditional
Indian medicine.
The health offers are completed by Medi-
cal-Wellness. Part of it are the awarded
“IchZeit” – arrangements an initiative of
the Rheinland-Pfalz health tourism. Here the
individual situation of the guest is analysed
and then a fitness and therapy schedule
made up – including stress management,
nutrition advice, relaxation and sporting ac-
tivities.
The spa resort also provides pure wellness
and beauty offers of course. Particular fa-
cilities in the historical spa quarter and the
modern “Emser Therme” guarantee recrea-
tion and relaxation in the idyllic location of
the Lahn valley with its clean air.

A new person in only two hours
ZCentrally located in the town but still situ-
ated by the very idyllic riverbank of the Lahn
the “Emser Therme” is fitting excellently and
timelessly in the nature. The attractive loca-
tion gives the guests the chance to glance
at the romantic river-landscape while relax-
ing. When designing the bath the river grav-
el acted as a model: rounded forms, warm
colours and natural material are the result
which makes a stay something very special.
Based on the four columns of ideal relaxa-
tion guests may expect a recreation concept,
which has proved to be good many times.
The combination of circulatory training by
exercises, procedures of changing temper-
atures (bath and sauna), physical recovery
and mental times of rest enables to gain the
optimum out of a stay in the thermal bath.
The spacious thermal landscape is fed by the
valuable and best known hot spring water
from Bad Ems. Seven basins altogether -
with different temperatures – invite to relax
or swim. The Sidroga herbs steam bath, the
Emser salt inhalation with the famous “Ems-
er salt” as well as the large rain shower top
the attractive offer off.
The sauna park spans an ambient interior
with saunas, fireplace lounge, plunge pool
and a large sauna garden with a garden
sauna. Germany’s first river sauna offers an
exceptional sauna experience. On the swim-
ming pontoon there are a Finnish panorama
sauna with a view at the opposite weir, a
rest sauna, a large lounge with a sauna bar
and a terrace.

Whether you enjoy sports at amateur, semi-pro-
fessional or the highest level, the Lahn valley
is your dream location, providing also
ideal outdoor training facilities. On the one
hand, this is due to the varying levels provided
by its low-mountain-range characteristics; on
the other hand, to numerous, well-developed
jogging, hiking and walking trails, as well as
the mountain-bike and cycling trails for racing,
touring and leisure-time cyclists. Since 2014 the
“Emser Bikepark” exists, an extraordinaire
mountain bike-flowtrail 3.9 kilometres long. The
“Lahntalradweg”, a cycle track many times
awarded by the ADFC, impresses by its sheer
“pedal romance”.
Bridle paths close to nature and professional-
ly-run riding stables guarantee horse and rider
an adventurous and, at the same time, relaxing
stay in and around Bad Ems. Those who love
water sports will find ideal training cours-
es on the river Lahn, whether your preference
is for canoeing or for other forms of river activity.
13
Exercise amidst nature’s charms
Those who prefer rising into the air – which is
especially clear and clean here – can take part
in a paragliding course high over the river Lahn.
If this is too risky for you, there are various oth-
er gentler types of sports to enjoy in the health
resort, such as dancing, tennis or crazy golf and
many other offers. As all of these training des-
tinations can be reached quite easily by public
transport, more and more sports lovers and fit-
ness fanatics decide to come to the Lahn area,
without having to use their cars.
All over the year Bad Ems and its envi-
rons are a true paradise for hikers. Bizar-
re rock formations, wildly romantic narrow
valleys and unspoiled meadows charm the
hiker e.g. the “Four – Turrets – Panorama - Walk”
with impressive views over the Lahn valley. A
nature experience in a class of its own is the
“Lahnwanderweg” (the Lahn hiking trail), a
quality trail which is 290 kilometres long and
runs from the source to the mouth of the river
(www.lahnwanderweg.com). And the popu-
lar Rheinsteig, another trail and the Jacobs-
pilgerweg, a pilgrims path are nearby, too.
Nordic walkers can improve their fitness on a
newly laid out Nordic walking course in
the midst of the Nassau Wildlife Park.
You have the choice of various routes, with
different levels of difficulty – all of them pro-
fessionally marked. The medical expertise
provided through co-operation with one of the
top-ranking orthopaedic clinics in the area sets
Bad Ems apart from Nordic walking venues in
other areas. The coaches, trained locally, can
refer to the medical know-how of the clinic and
pass this on to participants.

Golfers will find one of Germany’s old-
est and most beautiful golf courses
here at the “Denzerheide”. In 1928 the
English golf course designer Major Gg.
Fahrtentholtz, together with the German So-
ciety of Golf Course Designers, created an
18-hole golf paradise on an area of 200 acres
on the southern slopes of the Westerwald,
between the Rhine and Lahn rivers.
It has been the venue for important na-
tional championships for more than 50
years. Thus the “Mittelrheinische Golfclub
Bad Ems e.V.” is the place where competi-
Under par
NNNNNtions of the First Division of the German golf
association are held regularly. Every two
years the German team championship is
decided here. The course is very popular for
its fast greens and demanding – but always
consistent – fairways, as well as its old-tree
coverage. The slope of about 130 means
that precision and fitness are necessary for
male and female players alike. An excellent
restaurant and a small cosy hotel provide
further welcome facilities in this golf resort.

People like to call Bad Ems the “Kaiserbad”
(Emperor’s Spa), an allusion to one of the
most famous guests of the town, Emperor
Wilhelm I, who came for health treatment
to Bad Ems over nearly two decades. Like
him, members of the European aristocracy,
educated and fashionable society, came
streaming into the spa, helped it to glory
and made it the “Weltbad”, the world-fa-
mous spa, of its time. Tsar Alexander II,
King George IV of England, Queen Amalie of
Greece, King Leopold I of Belgium – the list
of all the notable past visitors is very long.
Yet the spa can look back on a much older
tradition - it belongs to the few spas in Ger-
many that can boast an unbroken history as
a spa since the Middle Ages. The impres-
sive, palace- like baroque Kurhaus and
the baroque residence “Zu den vier Tür-
men” (Four Turrets House) provide us
with such evidence, to this very day. Not
only tsars, emperors and kings had a special
liking for Bad Ems in those days. Artists of
all kinds stayed and worked in the spa,
and found inspiration and relaxation here.
Memorials, and the many paintings on the
town’s buildings, bear testimony to its fa-
mous visitors over the years. The composer
Jacques Offenbach worked as director of
music in Bad Ems for 12 years. Some of his
works were played for the first time in the
“Cursaal”. Also parts of his “Orpheus in the
Underworld” were composed at that time.
Fjodor Dostojewski, the great Russian
writer, stayed here several times to take a
cure and wrote parts of his novels here. He
wrote about Bad Ems: “…the town leans
against the rocks, the most picturesque in
It is the “Emser Depesche”, which left the best-known traces in the health resort. The so-called Benedetti Stein (Benedetti Stone) recalls the occurrences, involving King Wilhelm I., Graf Benedetti and Fürst von Bismarck, which led to the German-French War of 1870/71.

KKKKKKthe world. There are promenades and gar-
dens – and everything so charming.”
Richard Wagner, who stayed at Schloss
Balmoral and completed his famous opera
“Parzifal” here, must have enjoyed it equally
as much. Nikolai Gogol, Carl Maria von
Weber, Victor Hugo and Johann Wolf-
gang von Goethe were other famous visi-
tors to the town.
The name of Friedensreich Hundertwas-
ser, the Viennese artist and philosopher, is
closely linked to Bad Ems. Up to this very
day, the unique ceramic elements which
adorn his buildings and sculptures continue
to be produced in a local workshop, faithful
to its long tradition. The workshop can be
visited.

The Upper Germania Limes, which is the cor-
rect name for one of the most impressive ar-
chaeological monuments in central Europe,
was awarded UNESCO World Heritage sta-
tus in 2005. Thus it is not only Germany’s
youngest, but also its largest, archaeo-
logical monument.
With a length of 550 kilometres, 900 guard
posts, as well as 120 larger and smaller
forts, the Roman Limes formed the outer
border of the Roman Empire at that time.
The Limes started near Rheinbrohl on the
river Rhine, ran across the Westerwald and
Taunus to the river Main. From there it led
to Lorch on the Rems. There, at the border
between Upper Germania and Raetien, it
turned eastwards and reached the river Dan-
ube at Hienheim, west of Regensburg.
While the Upper Germania Limes served to
protect the fertile areas of the Neuwied basin,
the Rhine-Main-Region and the Wetterau, as
well as the connecting road between the pro-
vincial capital towns of Mogontiacum (Mainz)
and Augusta Vindelicum (Augsburg), the Raet-
ic Limes protected the Nördlinger Ries.
The “Limes” ran right through Bad Ems
and some of its neighbouring villages.
South of the River Lahn, on the Wintersberg,
the oldest reconstruction of a watch tower in
Germany (1874) was built on the foundations
of an original watch tower.
The excavations of another watch tower, and
the reconstruction of the palisades made of
strong logs in the neighbouring woods, are
equally impressive. On the other side of the
river Lahn near Kemmenau, a long stretch

In Bad Ems, lovers of culture will find much
to enjoy, as the varied programme is per-
formed in historically significant buildings,
the like of which would be difficult to find
anywhere else.
Besides a stroll along the Lahn Prome-
nade, in the Spa Garden or around the idyl-
lic Platz der Partnerschaft, with its Vene-
tian flair, it is - above all - the Marmorsaal
(Marble Hall), located in the Kurhaus,
that we must highlight here. For those who
know its history, it is almost a “holy” place
of culture, to which emperors and crowned
heads from all over the world came in the
past to indulge their senses.
This is also the case for the Kurtheater (Spa
Theatre) next door, a treasure of German the-
atre architecture, as well as for the oldest ca-
sino in Germany, which Bad Ems can boast.
The Badhaus im Kurpark (the Old Bath
House in the Spa Park) offers star-studded
cabaret, alongside gastronomic events.
The artist’s house Schloss Balmoral is
known for its love of experimentation. Artists
can find inspiration in Bad Ems’ special char-
acter and take advantage of the facilities
which the house has to offer. You will have
the chance to see artists, as well as their art,
and art theorists in exhibitions, performanc-
es and talks.
In and around these centres of culture, festi-
vals and sports events are organized through-
out the year. The legendary Rosenball
(Rose Ball), grand receptions, as well
as classical concerts involving international
stars, invite you, the visitor, into the Marble
Hall. Spa concerts in the park guarantee
afternoons of very special entertainment.
Summer meetings of bikers and owners of vin-
tage cars with their vehicles, song and concert
performances, the international chess tourna-
ment and, events around Jacques Offenbach
as well as the multi-day film music festival,
ensure that visitors to the town never need to
be bored. Thousands of spectators gather on
the banks of the Lahn to watch the legendary
dragon boats compete against each other on
the calm of the river during the Brückenfes-
tival (Bridge Festival). Rowers compete for
the Emperor’s Cup during the Emser Ruderre-
gatta (Bad Ems Regatta), Germany’s oldest
regatta event. And the Christmas market in
the historic spa quarter offers an atmosphere
which is unique in the whole region.
The highlight of the year, though, is Germa-
ny’s biggest and internationally renowned
Blumenkorso (Flower Parade). For one
day, the streets of the historic spa town are
transformed into a colourful and fragrant
ocean of flowers. Thirty floats decorated
with more than 1.8 million flowers move
through the town, accompanied by 1,500
bandsmen and majorettes. The parade at-
tracts visitors from all over Europe and is a
highlight for lovers of flowers, music and, of
course, photography. The traditional four-day
Bartolomäusmarkt (Fair), one of the old-
est fun-fairs in Germany, is part of the same
big event. The large, modern amusement
park, with more than 300 market stalls and
numerous rides, means there is no excuse to
feel bored.

most eco-friendly way to make the journey.

the sights of the Emperor’s Spa. During the

the route.
G
GGGGGThe classic boat trip on the River Lahn
is as fascinating for today’s visitors as it
has always been. Your group will be “all in
one boat”, enjoying the views at unspoiled
river banks, as well as romantic villages. You
can choose to take a one-hour excursion on
the comfortable river cruiser, with all its fa-
cilities, or opt for a day trip. To see the spa
from a boat is always an experience. And
those who have gained a taste for life on
the water can go on a “Three-Rivers Tour”
next time, along the river Lahn, through the
Upper Middle Rhine Valley UNESCO World
Heritage site, to the wonderful River Mo-
selle. Going on the rustic and adventurous
raft trip with music, dancing and barbecues
ranks first.
Back in Bad Ems you can explore the unique
and fascinating history of the town. Taking
part in a guided tour, your group can get
to know Bad Ems as a centre of art and
culture – from the time of the Romans to
the present day. For example, the guided tour
“Health springs and spa houses”, on which
you will learn how emperors and kings un-
derwent a cure, took the waters and had
other experiences, about which you will hear
some amusing anecdotes. The guided tour
„Anno dazumal – Geschichten aus Kaisers
Kur-Zeiten“ (Stories from the times of the
Emperor’s cures) is an experience of a very
special kind: In genuine scenes two guides
- dressed in historical costumes of course –
will act and tell you about events in the spa
of the 19th century. Enjoyable, entertaining
and instructive!

It is not only the health resort of Bad Ems itself
which offers you your ideal holiday. The cap-
tivating surroundings of the traditional bathing
resort invite you to adventurous excursions and
day trips. How about a long or short boat trip?
More than 160 kilometres of river provide
exciting boat or canoe trips. Very popular
is the so-called “Three-Rivers-Tour”, from
Bad Ems, on the new and comfortable pas-
senger ship, cruising along the Lahn, Moselle
and Rhine rivers, to the romantic central Rhine
valley, awarded World-Cultural-Heritage status
by UNESCO. You will pass castles and palaces,
dense forests and gently rolling meadowlands.
The nearby world-famous Loreley is legendary,
and the annual festival “Rhein in Flammen”
(“Rhine in Flames”) fills the Rhine with a
host of magical colours, to delight the visitor;
illuminated boats and vessels as far as the eye
can see and fantastic firework displays make a
trip to the central Rhine valley, at this time, an
unforgettable experience.
Those of a more contemplative nature can also
book a balloon ride over the river Lahn and
the foothills of the Westerwald and Taunus.
In and around Bad Ems, hiking-, pilgrim- and cy-
cle-trails provide for excursions into charming
Trips to raise your spirits
little villages, or towns rich in tradition, such
as Limburg or Rüdesheim. The Rheinsteig
trail and the Jakobsweg is also conveniently
close by. The Lahnwanderweg (Lahn hiking
trail) offers 290 kilometres hiking fun from the
source to the mouth of the river.
For children and nature-lovers, a visit to the
unique garden of living butterflies in the
princely Schlosspark in Bendorf-Sayn is
a must. Culturally and historically interesting
destinations are Limburg, Mainz and Tri-
er. Places of cultural interest, such as Maria
Laach, the Vulkaneifel, as well as the jewel
centre in Idar-Oberstein, are always worth
a visit. Equally worth a visit is the town of
Koblenz, nestling where Rhine and Moselle
meet, with its famous “Deutsches Eck” and
Ehrenbreitstein Fortress. The spectacular
ropeway across the river Rhine and the
adventure exhibition “Romanticum” are an
attraction. The highest cold water geyser
of the world can be lionised in the volcano
adventure park in Andernach. Bad Ems is also
an ideal starting point for a ceramics tour
into the “Kannenbäckerland” as well as
a visit to the zoo, the game preserve and the
adventure amusement park.

By the way: Bad Ems also offers something for
racing car enthusiasts, as the Nürburgring
track, with its legendary Northern loop, is not
far away. Whoever is in the mood for it can do
a few laps, burning rubber on the red-hot track.
The roots of the car industry can be found at
the Nikolaus-August-Otto-Museum, which
is just ten kilometres away in Holzhausen,
birthplace of the famous inventor of engines.
And how about following in the footsteps of
the Romans? There is lots to see in the form of
pictures and texts at the Festung (Fortress)
Ehrenbreitstein in Koblenz.

as a large range of gastronomic delights.

This well-established holiday resort lies in
the Westerwald, in the heavily-wooded Nas-
sau wildlife park, about six kilometres above
the health resort of Bad Ems. The old town
hall, a half-timbered house built in 1710, and
a collection of gravestones from the 16th
century, are well-worth seeing.
The nearby “Limes” footpath offers walking
on particularly historical ground. Sections of
the 2000 year-old Roman ramparts still re-
main. The reconstructed Stephansturm - sit-
uated on a 423-metre high basalt mountain
peak – shows what a Roman watch tower
actually looked like.

and offers, in the way of facilities for the vis-

roque mural paintings, is almost young. The
village centre, with its emphasis on the rus-
tic and the traditional, testifies to Becheln’s
past success in winning first prize in the
competition for more attractive villages.
About 700 people live in this village on the
Taunus heights. Here you are invited to
walk on marked footpaths that offer won-
derful views. On a good day, you can look
across the Marksburg, as far as the Eifel und
Hundsrück on the far side of the River Rhine.
The footpaths in the area offer evidence
of times long past, like the Celtic barrows
and well-preserved sections of the Roman
”Limes”. At the watch towers, the small fort
and at the inn on the “Limes”, you can get
information about the construction and the
function of the Roman boundary structures.
The most beautiful part of the Roman front-
line is revealed by the circular Limes footpath.
Compared to this, the parish church with its

Dausenau further offers a late Gothic
half-timbered town hall, built between 1432
and 1434. The building is the second oldest
of its kind in Germany. Furthermore, the fa-
mous “Wirtshaus an der Lahn” (Inn on the
Lahn) is in Dausenau, too.
Dausenau is an established holiday resort on
the river Lahn, between the health resorts of
Bad Ems and Nassau.
With its medieval heritage, Dausenau
presents a picture which is unique in the
whole region. First of all there is the largely
preserved medieval town-wall, which snug-
gles, but imposingly, up to the river Lahn.
Two out of the former seven turrets are still
preserved, one of them the famous “Lean-
ing Tower of Dausenau”. Other sights are
the 1,000 year-old “court oak-tree” and the
Gothic parish church of St. Kastor – one of
the most interesting churches in the Lahn
valley – which rises like a cathedral above
the village.
DAUSENAU – RIGHT IN THE MIDDLE OF THE MIDDLE AGES

Fachbach remains an ideal place for trout
fishing.
www.fachbach.de
Fachbach is situated close to Bad Ems,
where the Westerwald meets the Lahn.
It is surrounded by various highlands and
river landscapes. Every hiker on the Lahn
trail, every cyclist on the Lahn cycle track
and every canoeist on the river has to pass
Fachbach. The “Nieverner Hütte” (smelter)
is one of the most impressive industrial
monuments in Rheinland-Pfalz and lies
on Fachbach’s own island in the river (In-
sel Oberau). The ironworks – founded in
1671 – gained greatest importance after
the smelting works had closed, and goods
made of cast iron were produced. The name
of the settlement comes down from the
old German word “Fah”, meaning a dam

Frücht lies high up in the Taunus, in just as
rural and quiet an environment. But its histo-
ry over past centuries belies its present calm.
From 1613 the village was under the rule of
Johann Gottlieb vom Stein, who was an-
swerable solely to the Emperor himself, and
was, at that time, a mini-state of Germany.
Legally it was as independent as Prussia or
Bavaria. The last owner of the territory was
Freiherr Karl vom und zum Stein, a descend-
ant of an old knightly dynasty in Nassau, who
was born in 1757. He entered the history
books as a Prussian Secretary of State and
reformer. The abolition of bondage and the
establishment of municipal self-government
were among his most important reforms. In

Thanks to its location, excursions from Miel-
len to nearby Lahnstein and Koblenz are also
available, which is best by bike, of course.
Miellen is right on the banks of the river Lahn
and only about four kilometres from Bad
Ems. The name of the village comes from
the word “Mühle” (mill). Once there was
a water mill on the lower brook in the so-
called “Schweitzertal” (Swiss valley). Later
six mills were built there altogether.
The “Schweizertal” is extremely popular
with hikers and nature-lovers. With its rug-
ged and romantic character, the valley offers
a unique landscape. This is a starting point
for fascinating tours into the hills of the
Taunus region or for a trip to the impressive
“Ruppertsklamm” (narrow gorge). Anglers
and lovers of water sports will also find
much to enjoy here.

Also available, in the very heart of these nat-
ural surroundings, is a Kneipp cure facility.
Today Kemmenau has the reputation among
city-dwellers as the place to go for rest and
relaxation.
Kemmenau is also renowned as the “sun ter-
race” above the Lahn valley. This established
Westerwald holiday resort, with its favour-
able uplands climate, is 400 to 486 metres
above sea level . The village is just three
kilometres from Bad Ems .
Kemmenau is surrounded by woodland,
which is typical for the Nassau wildlife park.
It is the ideal centre for all kinds of out-door
activities, such as riding, coach-driving and
tennis. In winter there are well-maintained
tracks for cross-country skiing. You can enjoy
hiking all year round. On the “Limes” foot-
path it is possible to walk down to the Lahn
valley in the footsteps of the old Romans. Or
you can walk on the circular footpath, past
renovated watering places for horses, and to

ideal stopping-place on the route along the

Nievern is situated on the romantic bend
in the river Lahn. First of all the old parish
church, with its Romanesque bell-tower dat-
ing back to the 13th century, is well worth
a visit. In the regional museum you will find
objects of interest from the village’s past
history. Nievern is a good starting point for
some scenic walking tours. Good examples
are the circular footpath to the nature re-
serve “Nieverner Wehr”, a reserve contain-
ing rare birds and snakes; or a walk through
the “Fröchbachtal” or to the “Hohen Mal-

More than 20 years of Ayurveda
world-class quality in Germany
This private, certified and mul-

has been one of the leading Ayurveda
institutions in Europe since 1993.
90 staff members cater to national

lit area of 1,200 m2.
“Panchakarma” is at the heart of the
Ayurved therapy. This cure, which is
incredibly relaxing and fundamen-
tally purifying, serves to remove the
poisons absorbed from the environ-
ment and any unhealthy metabolic
residues in the body, lifting them out
of the cells and removing them gently
from the body. Prevention, rejuvena-

tion, revitalisation and healing are
brought about gently and naturally.
Just a few days here will have
the same effect as a holiday, with
long-lasting recuperative effects and
a perceptible improvement in health,
but without the stress of a long flight.
The offers of treatment are varied.
The spectrum ranges from a trial day
or a trial week up to a comprehensive
cure of 21 days.
Further advantages: authentic
Ayurveda treatment, expert care by
experienced Ayurveda doctors, the
choice of 4 and 5 star accommoda-

medicine
In the department for pneumology
and allergology the entire spectrum
of pulmonary diseases is diagnosed
and treated, including chronic res-
piratory diseases and the markedly
increasing bronchial carcinomas. This
department also provides an inten-

tory, in which patients with disturbed
sleep, caused by the respiratory
ducts, are examined and treated ther-
apeutically.
The acute department of nature heal-
ing medicine is a leader in its field in
Rheinland-Pfalz. It is based in three
therapeutic areas: classic naturopa-
thy (part of which are hydrotherapy,
phytotherapy, movement and nutri-
tion therapy), physiotherapy (part of
which are individual
and group gymnastics, lymph drainage, thermotherapy and cryotherapy) and sup-

Our philosophy: “You cannot cure the body without the soul, or the soul

Location I F5Our raft trips are great party fun. The rustically adventurous raft “Lahn Arche” provides space for 90 fellow rafters. You raft from Bad Ems towards Nassau and back for about three hours passing all kinds of sights. Music and dance, solid meals and drinks – this is where the cheer starts and time flies. Chartering of the complete raft for parties or staff outings is also possible.
