The SMARTEYE¤ PRO is not a teach mode sensor; it is anautomatic sensor. It is a high performance photoelectric sensorthat, after the initial set-up, can be adjusted by a single push ofa button, either on the sensor or at a remote location. As a result, there is no guesswork on the part of the operator. Now you canthrow away the screwdriver! After selecting the features of yourapplication requirements, the SMARTEYE¤ PRO sensor isready to be adjusted. Simply put the target in front of the sensor(proximity mode) and push the Auto-Set™ button. From thatpoint on, the sensor will automatically maintain a perfect setting, thanks to the dynamic ACT™(Automatic Contrast Tracking)system. The SPB Series Sensors are also equipped with a 5-LED Contrast Indicator™ as well as an Action Alert™ diagnostic tool that allows the operator tovisually substantiate performance. The RSP Series Sensors feature a remote auto-set input. When thelock feature is enabled, the SMARTEYE¤ PRO sensor is tamper proof. Now the sensor will provideyou with the hassle-free performance that you expect from a SMARTEYE.
INTRODUCTION
AUTOMATIC SELF-ADJUSTINGFrom Clean to Dirty...It Keeps On Working!
• ACT™ AUTOMATIC CONTRAST TRACKINGThis digital tracking system automaticallyadjusts the sensor as detrimental changesoccur, such as dirty lens or dirty reflector.Additional concerns that affect the sensor s per-formance are broken fibers in light guides, dam-aged lenses, LED light source or thermal drift, and target variations such as position, orienta-tion, or color. The ACT™ system automaticallycompensates for all of the above. In addition, the sensor tracks with signal shift or deteriora-tion caused by high speed input events. Thenew SMARTEYE¤ PRO sensor continues tooperate, despite deteriorating or detrimentalconditions, and requires far less maintenance. In applications where conventional photoelectricsensors require constant adjustment, the newSMARTEYE¤ PRO is the answer. The A C T ™system is event driven, i.e., the sensor monitorseach input event and makes appropriate adjust-ments. This results in the truly unique ability ofthe sensor to track with gradual deterioration ofcontrasting light levels in dynamic conditions, with input events ongoing.
• AGS™ AUTOMATIC GAIN SELECTThis unique feature provides automatic digitalselection of the amplifier gain based upon yourapplication requirements.
•QUICKSET™ ADJUSTMENTThis two-step procedure is easy to performand requires no expertise whatsoever.1. Establish one of the following conditions:
Proximity Mode .... Reflect light off object.Beam Break Mode .... Remove object fromlight beam path.
2. Depress the red and green buttons simulta-neously for 3 seconds, and you have a perfectsetting.
• AUTOSET™ ADJUSTMENTThe Auto-Set adjustment routine only requiresone finger to push one button one time! Even ina dynamic operating condition, with ongoinginput events, all you have to do is push a buttonfor a perfect setting. Models with remote Auto-SetTM are also available (RSP Series).
• EDR (Pat. No. 5,621,205)Another unique feature, the EDR (EnhancedDynamic Range) circuit is digitally controlled. Itprevents dark state saturation and expands theoperating range without reducing amplifier gain.

• ACTION ALERT™ OPTION (SPB Series)This indicator provides an early warning to prevent marginalperformance. When the sensor can no longer provide full con-trast deviation as displayed on the contrast indicator, theACTION ALERT triggers an output to drive a visual or audiblealarm.
• REMOTE AUTO-SET™ OPTION (RSP Series)Remotely adjust the sensor from a push button switch or atouch screen instantaneously. The auto-set routine can occurduring static or dynamic operating conditions.
• 5-LED DUAL FUNCTION INDICATOR:Contrast Indicator™.....Provides "at-a-glance" performancedata during both setup and operation.Status Indicator ... Displays status of 5 selectable functions:Lock, Auto Set™, Output State, ACT™, and Timer.
• VERSATILITYChoice of twelve quick change optical blocks allows use inthe proximity, convergent, retroreflective, polarized retroreflec-tive, fiber optic, or gap sensing modes.
• LED LIGHT SOURCESChoice of four LED light sources invisible infrared, red, blue, and white light.
• CONNECTIONSChoice of shielded cable (6 ft.) or built-in connector for use withoptional cables.
• MOUNTING METHODSThe SMARTEYE¤ PRO includes a unique built-in DIN Railsnap-on design. It can also be thru-hole or bracket mounted.
Space-saving multiple sensor mounting design!

Light Source GuidelinesINVISIBLE INFRARED LIGHT SOURCE (880 NM)A. Best choice in most opaque object sensing tasksB. Provides longest possible sensing range in either beam make
or beam break sensing modesC. Best choice in hostile environments; useful in penetrating lens
contaminationD. Preferred for use with small glass fiber light guides Note: Do
not use IR light with plastic fiber optic light guidesE. Preferred when sensing dark colored objects in the proximity
(beam make) mode, i.e., black, blue, green, etc.F. Useful in penetrating containers for verification of contents;
also useful in detecting overlapped splices in dense materialsG. Color perception; tends to favor blue colored objects
RED LIGHT SOURCE (660 NM)A. Best choice for use with plastic fiber optic light guidesB. Useful when sensing translucent objects in proximity (beam
make) modeC. Useful when sensing transparent objects in fiber optic retrore-
flective (beam break) modeD. Can be polarized for retroreflective (beam break) sensing to
reduce proxing on shiny objectsE. Opposed fiber optic light guides can be polarized for sensing
some translucent plastic containers; consult factory for detailsF. Used as red filter for color perception advantages
BLUE LIGHT SOURCE (480 NM)A. Useful for detecting translucent, transparent, plastic or glass
objects in the retroreflective mode when using the R4 optionalblock
B. Used as blue filter for color perception advantages, i.e. resolv-ing yellow vs. white colored objects or printed registrationmarks
WHITE LIGHT SOURCE (Broadband Color Spectrum)
A. Best choice for detecting all printed registration marks onpackaging material
B. Recommended for detecting dark colored objects in the prox-imity (beam make) mode
C. Best choice for sorting colored objects
