Family First Companion Care is a locally owned and operated agency that has been serving the Tri-State for 10 years. The company strives to provide quality care for the people in our community. The staff ’s mission has remained the same from day one of business — to assist clients in lead-ing dignified, independent lives in the comfort and safety of their own homes, wherever that may be.

Clients’ needs are assessed on an indi-vidual basis and a care plan is created in a collaborative effort. Family First caregiv-ers share a passion for their mission and are thoroughly vetted before hiring. They provide care spanning from short, infre-

quent visits up to and including 24-hours-a-day, 365-days-a-year assistance. The Family First team diligently works to curate a staff that will meet the needs of each client. They keep the same familiar caregivers as part of a team to work together to provide a high quality of life. Family First helps to aid in activi-ties of daily living, from a baseline of helping with errands and cooking to assistance with end of life care. Family First accepts the following funding sources: Veterans Affairs, Indi-ana State funded programs, Long Term Care insurance, and private pay. They are called for a variety of different situations

including injury, surgical recovery, and chronic illness. A member of the staff is on call 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Family First caregivers pride themselves on cus-tomer service and their client-centered business model.

SENIOR LIFESTYLE TOUR • APRIL 7-8

The doctor told Brian Carrico he probably wouldn’t live more than a few weeks. That was back in October 2017. Now in February 2018, Carrico has surpassed expectations and even has a new lease on life, thanks to the team at Parkview Care Center in Evansville. Carrico, 44, was diagnosed with heart failure in 2007 at age 34. The disease slowly took him away from his career in long-term care as assistant to the medi-cal director. In January 2017, Carrico suffered a stroke, and in October 2017, he started to feel his heart failure wors-ening. He went to see his cardiologist, who sent him directly to the hospital where he had more than 30 pounds of excess fluid drained. Carrico needed a heart transplant, but he also needed rehabilitation so he could improve enough physically to become a candidate for surgery. Thank-fully, he still knew people in the skilled nursing and rehab industry, including Eric Ahlbrand, executive director at Parkview Care Center. Because of this connection, Carrico decided to tour his building. “I came to visit and was impressed with the facility,” says Carrico. “It was an easy decision compared to the other buildings that I looked at.” When Carrico came to Parkview as a patient on Oct. 30, he was very weak. “I could barely walk 100 feet without getting short of breath and needing support,” remembers Carrico. “My gait was unsteady.” “Although he was independent with his daily living tasks of bathing and dress-ing, he had difficulty with the endurance part of those tasks,” says Jennifer Smith, director of rehab at Parkview. Carrico also needed help with bal-ance, swallowing, and smiling. Physical,

occupational, and speech therapies im-proved all that. Carrico was able to prog-ress quickly in occupational therapy and completed his OT treatment first. When he started, it took him around an hour to get ready to go out, which involved showering, dressing, and grooming. Now, the process takes him about 20 minutes. His OT team also helped him prepare to do his own laundry again. In physical therapy, Carrico focused on strength training for his legs and arms. Slowly, he progressed to walking. “They have an anti-gravity treadmill, which is a great piece of equipment,” says Carrico. “It takes a percentage of my body weight off so it’s not so physi-cally demanding on my heart.” Speech therapy helped Carrico address his face droop and swallow-ing. Stefanie Ward, speech therapist at Parkview, asked him for photos of him smiling before his stroke. “She studied them outside of work on her own time and figured out what muscles I was using to smile,” says Car-rico. “My smile has improved drastically. My heart doctor, before he noticed the physical changes in my strength, noticed the changes in my facial expressions.” Carrico can’t say enough good things about his therapy team, especially Ward, physical therapist assistant Lisa Cook, and occupational therapist assistant Nikki Pirtle. “They’ve considered my needs here and when I discharge,” says Carrico. “For someone who’s 44, my indepen-

dence is extremely important to me. They basically turned me from not being able to function independently to being able to do so.” On Jan. 10, 2018, Carrico was able to start his stress testing to see if he could become a candidate for a heart transplant, and again, his doctors were impressed. Carrico passed another milestone on Feb. 10 — he went to live at a friend’s house. He continues to do physical therapy at Parkview Care Center as an outpatient and still raves about his therapists and nurses. “They took someone who really didn’t have much of a future and have built me up both physically and mentally to the point where my future actually looks quite bright and hopeful,” says Carrico. “It has been a pleasure to join Brian on his journey and see the increase in his abilities as well as his happiness with his own progress,” adds Smith. “His thera-pists are as proud of his successes as he is of their encouragement and dedication to his progress.” On Feb. 12, Carrico received the best news: He is cleared for a heart transplant and is on the transplant list. “I am very, very excited and very happy,” said Carrico. “Sometimes when you don’t think you can do it but you have help, miracles happen.”

SENIOR LIFESTYLE TOUR • APRIL 7-8

Thinking about rehabilitation or long-term health care is a scary part of life to navigate, but a good team of therapists can make everything better. Since 1962, The Good Sa-maritan Home has been caring for the Tri-State’s aging community through quality long-term healthcare services. Located at 601 N. Boeke Road, the home has grown to include 128 long-term nursing home beds, 16 residen-tial apartments, a 46-bed Alzheimer’s community called Pathways, and an additional 15-bed Medicare Rehab unit called The Pavilion. Pathways is a specialized, secured unit for residents who have been diag-nosed with Alzheimer’s or dementia. The facility offers a home-like envi-ronment with specialized programing and activities to keep them active and motivated or to help with memory is-sues. The Good Samaritan Home is a licensed care facility offering 24-hour nursing care. The Good Samaritan Home specializes in transitional care and post-acute recovery with a rehabilita-tion team that works one-on-one with

individuals to create a customized treatment plan. The team offers physical, occupational, and speech therapy seven days a week, begin-ning within the first 24 hours of admission. The home also provides short-term rehabilitation and outpatient therapy. The therapy team, comprised of two physical therapists, two occupational therapists, and two speech-language pathologists, pro-vides specialized programs like CVA/stroke recovery, joint replacement, car-diac recovery, wound management, and more. The programs used at The Good Samaritan home are evidence-based and proven to offer the best outcome for a quick and complete recovery. Privately owned by the United Church of Christ, The Good Samaritan Home’s mission is to provide a caring community through an atmosphere of Christian love and concern. Whether you or a loved one need short- or long-term rehabilitation, the Good Samaritan Home team handles each individual with compassion and care. Offering physical, occupational, and

speech therapy, the compassion-ate and caring staff takes pride in providing the highest level of care to residents. One resident recently stated, “The staff here makes me feel safe and at home. They take ex-cellent care of me and my needs.” With three meals a day, housekeeping services, cable for their TV, Wi-Fi access, and a safe, secured environment, residents are sure to feel com-fortable at The Good Samari-tan Home. As usual, the biggest and most popular activity is bingo, but it is not the only event. The Good Samaritan Home also offers outings, spiritual events,

men’s groups, ceramics, painting classes, cards and games, exercise, mu-sic therapy, and has a variety of groups that come into the facility to entertain with music and dance. Not only is The Good Samaritan committed to their residents, but also to their employees. On April 1, 2017, The Good Samaritan Home partnered with IU Health systems to provide an in-house health clinic available to all their employees at no cost. The clinic is open three days per week, providing medical visits with either a physician or nurse practitioner, free medications (along with diabetic testing materials), and free lab services. The clinic has a private entrance with three private exam rooms. Clinic visits are accepted by walk-in and by appointment. Ap-pointments can be made either online or by phone call. The rehab team also starts dis-charge planning on admission. The group meets with the guest and their families to find out their goals for discharge, and each plan is individual-ized. Family members say they cannot imagine having their parents anywhere else and that Good Samaritan Home is the only place they would want a family member residing. Many also appreciate the fact there is a full-time Chaplain on staff.

SENIOR LIFESTYLE TOUR • APRIL 7-8

At Walnut Creek, we are home! We are committed to being the leader in pro-viding quality personal services for our residents, while honoring the experience of aging. Imagine your brain as a large shelf with thousands of books, each repre-senting a memory. When someone has dementia, it is like the shelf begins to sway, gradually shaking loose the top books first, or the most recent memories, down to the bottom books, or long-term memories. At Walnut Creek Alzheimer’s Special Care Center, we reinforce the shelf with our Meaningful Moments philosophy of care, focusing on each resident’s specific interests, experience, and memories. Our Meaningful Moments program takes a holistic approach to caring for our resi-dents by:

OUR PROGRAM PHILOSOPHY

Our philosophy of care is focused on the knowledge that to provide the care and support our residents need, we must know and understand dementia and the ever-changing impact it has on their ability to understand their world. We must also know each resident’s unique life story in order to create moments that

are meaningful to them personally. We strive to pro-vide a warm, caring, and supportive environment where our residents can experience daily routines and familiar faces. Our programs are designed to add meaning and value to their lives and to help them feel comfortable in their environment. Throughout their stay with us, our residents’ health and well being will be a shared concern among their family, friends, and our knowledgeable staff. As partners in care, we will work together to build a plan that supports their inde-pendence and provides them with the sense of belonging that is so important to all of us.

WHY SHOULD FAMILIES CHOOSE A FACILITY THAT IS ALZHEIMER’S-FOCUSED TO TAKE CARE OF THEIR FAMILY MEMBER WITH THE DISEASE?

Few decisions made in life are as dif-ficult as the one to search for care options for a loved one. The specific challenges that accompany Alzheimer’s and dementia-related diseases are best cared for in an environment specifi-cally designed for that purpose. Our staff ’s training, the community’s physical design, and time-tested programs and activities offered engage every resident

and enhance quality of life for those with this disease.

QUALITY OF LIFE

We strive to maintain a culture of care and compassion. We know everyone has a unique personal history, and we feel the more we honor each resi-dent’s life story by knowing them as an individual, we can ease challenges that accompany Alzheimer’s and bring meaningful moments of joy and self-worth to the person’s present and their remaining days. We honor food preferences, tailor daily activity to past routines, offer activity and programming specific to past interests, and allow staff to have personal conversations and connec-tions with each of our residents.

WALNUT CREEK HONORS OUR VETERANS AND THEIR FAMILIES

Our community recognizes and appreci-ates the sacrifices made by our veterans and their families. We also are aware many elderly veterans struggle with the costs of senior living due to limited, fixed incomes. Many potential residents of our communities are unaware they may be entitled to financial benefits based on military service that can substantially help underwrite the cost of care. We have partnered with an indepen-dent law firm specializing in veterans benefits to assist our residents in un-derstanding and determining whether or not these important benefits may apply in their particular situation.
