Jesus had just spent a long time teaching the people. He taught them how to treat each other, and how to treat people you don’t like. He taught them how to give and how to pray. It was a lot for them to learn about. Jesus could see they needed time to absorb it all, so He started to tell a story.

Once there were two men who wanted to build a house. They talked about it and made many plans. Finally they started to build.

The wise man built his house on the rock far from the water. He still had a great view but he was sure his house was secure. The foolish man built his down on the sand near the water. He talked a long time about the wonderful view, and how he could walk right out the door and go swimming.

Soon after they built their houses a great storm came. The rains poured down, the waters rose and the winds beat on the houses. When the storms were gone the wise man’s house was still there standing strong. The foolish man’s house was gone, destroyed in the storm. Jesus concluded the story and said, “The person who hears what I say and does it is like the wise man. The one who hears what I say and doesn’t do it is like the foolish man.”
