“Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him”. (1 John 2:15)

We pray for the Lord to give us wisdom for this difficult question: What level of personal relationship should a believer have with this world and the unbelievers in it? Can we be of the world and love the world? The answer if “No.” The word of God is explicit about this. Should we alienate ourselves from the world and live an ascetic life? Again, the Bible says “No.” God does tell us, however, that believers should keep separate from the love of the world.

A believer should associate with people and systems of the world with the sole aim of enriching them, ultimately by bringing them to the saving knowledge of Jesus Christ. This principle is demonstrated in the case of the ‘Good Samaritan” and the man who was robbed. The Levite and the priest demonstrated a separation that was wrong while the Samaritan demonstrated the love and truth of Christ. Here a question may arise. While God is always prudent, it is His stated work to win the worldly. “I came not to call the righteous, but sinners…”, and to do so through His committed followers, the “salt of the earth.” If we follow our Lord as committed servants, we would definitely fulfill this mission work. The call to every believer is not to stay aloof from the world but to be holy within it.

Believers are required to be balanced to faithfully be available to the unbelievers around them, while at the same time “keeping themselves unspotted by the world.” “And whatever you do, do it heartily, as to the lord and not to men knowing that from the lord you will receive the reward of the inheritance; for you serve the Lord Christ”. (Colossians 3:23, 24). It shouldn’t surprise us that God rewards the believer who uses his secular workplace to the same degree as an evangelist or pastor.

We should play our roles in multiple arenas like family, education, government, media, personal life, religion or business. We should seek God about where He wants us to be, and be faithful in what he has given us to do right now. We should do the work we are doing with excellence. Our work has eternal value as serve and witness for our heavenly father. “Serve with a good attitude, as to the Lord and not to men”. (Eph 6:7)

Work as though you were working for the Lord rather for people. Live out your faith in the work place. Lives will be touched and communities and nations will be transformed. Give opportunity “One fair Chance” to respond to the gospel of Jesus Christ.

“And the Lord said, Shall I hide from Abraham that thing which I do; (Genesis 18:17)In order to achieve His purpose of blessing for mankind, God had planned to call out and preserve in one nation of the human family. That nation must spring from a single man. That man was Abraham. We rejoice today in the blessing of the Gospel because he was faithful to Him who called him through faith in Himself. We hear the lord say: “Shall I hide from Abraham what I am about to do?” Why does God take the trouble to explain his actions to an individual in terms he can understand? Abraham was as the friend of God, a partner of God, with whom He wanted to share His plans and concerns. This raises prayer and intercession to a new level. God took counsel with Abraham. No longer are they discussing the important subject of a son of Abraham, but the awful destiny of Sodom. As Abraham in fear and trembling pleaded for the city, it could not have been only the concern for Lot’s family that motivated his intensity. It was his wider concerns for other people in Sodom. Was everyone there was equally corrupt? Surely a just God could not possibly plan to destroy everybody? It is a perplexed man who steppeds forward to speak, mystified about the apparent horror of God’s judgment. “Will You sweep away the righteous with the wicked? .... Far be that from you! Will not the Judge of all the earth do right?” (Gen 18:23, 25) His faith was being shattered in a God whom he had hitherto known as just and faithful. He was torn between his terror of God Almighty and his desire to understand that God was still just in spite of what he planned to do.The issue here was not the fate of Sodom, but in the very character of God. “Behold I have ventured to speak to the Lord, although I am but dust and ashes”. (Gen 18:25) Abraham was painfully aware of his creatureliness, his utter insignificance before his creator God. So easily we lose that sense of awe in our worship of God. Through this terrifying yet wonderful experience of God as he interceded for a doomed city of men and women, “Abraham” grew into a larger man with a greater God. God Himself drew the interview to a close and left Abraham to the wonder of his new discovery.”When we touch God interceding for others, we ourselves experience the deep touch of God in the very depth of our soul. As we take our concerns and burdens for others before the throne of grace there is a growing intimacy with God such that God makes us His confidant as we make ourselves available to discern burdens and concerns on His heart.May the love of God transform us by the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, strengthen us. May the power of the Holy Spirit enable us to give “One Fair Chance” to many to respond to the Gospel. “Each one teach one; each one reach ten.” May the spirit of God give us His wisdom to grow in intimacy with God, and to testify of Him through His mighty works.

Dearest Delegates, my Sisters in India,

Many thanks to all of you for welcoming me for Good News 360+ National Womens Conference I praise God for your willing ears, open hearts, and your desire to know God better. May he continue to intensify that desire and provide opportunities for you to share what you learn. May you remember what you heard and apply the lessons every day to your life. Many of you wrote that you just want to serve him, but you must begin with knowing him. Be patient for the ministry, that will come, but while you are waiting, learn all that you can.

You were uniquely created by God to be you, and he chose you before the foundation of the world. You are truly loved, by the omnipotent, omnipresent, eternal Creator God. Your relationship with the Lord God is your number one priority, and all relationships take work, commitment, and intentional actions. Faith and love are active, not passive.

You are specifically designed for an assignment, and he will empower you and provide you the opportunities. Your assignment may not be to be the director of a ministry, or to travel halfway around the world to teach. It may be simply ministering to one partic-ular woman, or one child, and that is just as important. Just like sin is sin and sins are not judged by one being more of a sin than another, its all just sin, ministry is like that. There is not one ministry more important than the other. He calls us all to fulfill different assignments.

Many blessings on you and your families! I am confident, because the Bible tells me so, that he who has begun a good work in you will be faithful to complete it.

Christine Butler

And he bearing his cross went forth into a place called the place of a skull, which is called in the Hebrew Golgotha. John 19:17

Jesus on the CrossDr. Doug Bookman

B.A., M.Div., Th.M., Ph.D.Professor of New Testament and Bible Exposition

A. Jesus on the Way to Golgotha (Before 9:00 a.m.)

Scripture: Matthew 27:31-34; Mark 15:20-23; Luke 23:26-33; and John 19:17

Notes: The Romans intended crucifixion to be 1) unspeakably cruel; 2) mercilessly lingering (men would often last a day or more on the cross); 3) inescapably public (again, to hinder any seditious impulse in the citizenry); and 4) publicly certifiable (the death had to occur visibly and undeniably on the cross so that the rumor would not get started that the seditionist had somehow survived and the rebellion should go on). Thus, crucifixion was always on a low hill outside a main city gate (because a gate is a bottleneck - a person going into/out of the city must pass that way). Jesus is forced to carry the horizontal piece of the cross to the place of execution, just outside a main gate on the north of the city of Jerusalem.

B. The First Three Hours on the Cross (9:00 a.m.-Noon)

Scripture: Matthew 27:35-44; Mark 15:24-32; Luke 23:33-43; and John 19:18-27

Notes: Jesus is crucified between two criminals. Sunlight remains. The soldiers gamble for Jesus’s garments (in fulfillment of Psalms 22:18). The inscription is affixed amid much scoffing. Jesus speaks three times: 1) to His heavenly Father on behalf of His tormentors: “Father, forgive them,” 2) to the repentant thief: “Today you shall be with me in paradise,” and 3) to His mother and to John: “Woman, behold thy son.”

C. The Final Three Hours on the Cross (Noon-3:00 p.m.)

Scripture: Matthew 27:45-50; Mark 15:33-37; Luke 23:44-46; and John 19:28-30

Notes: God draws a supernatural darkness over the scene. Jesus, as the Lamb of God, is “forsaken” (i.e., judicially dis-fellowshipped, rejected) by the Father, suffering the agony and torment of spiritual death (i.e., separation from the Father) on behalf of fallen men. (It was the prospect of this spiritual separation that had so horrified Jesus as He contemplated the cross.) Jesus is silent until late in the three hours, and then He speaks four times: 1) in agony, “My God, why...,” 2) to those standing by: “I

thirst!” (Jesus had something more to say, but His mouth and throat were so parched by the ordeal of crucifixion that He did not have the physical strength to say it; thus this request for moisture for His lips), 3) to a breathlessly waiting world, a cry of sublime victory: “It is finished,” and 4) having completed the awful task: “Father, into thy hands....” The Prince of Life lays down His physical life for three dark days.

D. Physical Phenomena at the Death of Jesus

Scripture: Matthew 27:51-56; Mark 15:38-41; and Luke 23:50-54

Notes: These events include the following: the rending of the veil in the temple; tremors in the earth that split rocks; the resuscitation (return to mortal life) of some who had (recently?) died and been buried in the regions of Jerusalem. These physical signs drew many onlookers to faith, including a centurion (Roman soldier given leadership over 100 troops) who had been assigned to the detail conducting this crucifixion.

Project

ManageMent 101

Continued...

First, I believe that any/all project management assignments must start with the passion, burden, and desire to get things done. Nehemiah had such a burden for both the people of Israel and the reconstruction of the wall of Jerusalem.

Nehemiah’s Burden – “And it came to pass, when I heard these words, that I sat down and wept, and mourned certain days, and fasted, and prayed before the God of heaven. And said, I beseech thee, O Lord God of heaven, the great and terrible God, that keepeth covenant and mercy for them that love him and observe his commandments.” Nehemiah 1:4

Next, the depth and breadth of his spiritual insight was enormous. Not only did Nehemiah have a burden for his people and the reconstruction of the wall, but God

gave him spiritual discernment and understanding. Nehemiah had a deep comprehension of the prevailing issues/problems of the day. In project management circles, problem identification and understanding is fundamental to moving forward. The issues need to be studied and analyzed from a variety of different angles. Project leaders must first understand what they are dealing with before they can offer concrete and sustainable solutions. And Nehemiah knew that the nation of Israel was apostate in their actions and thinking.

Nehemiah’s Spiritual Insight – “We have dealt very corruptly against thee, and have not kept the commandments, nor the statutes, nor the judgments, which thou commandedst thy servant Moses.” Nehemiah 1:7

While the circumstances of the day tended to be man focused vs. God

centered, Nehemiah still trusted in God’s promises. He believed that if the people of Israel would turn back to God, great things would happen. Nehemiah understood that God fulfills His promises.

Nehemiah’s Trust in God – “Remember, I beseech thee, the word that thou commandedst thy servant Moses, saying, If ye transgress, I will scatter you abroad among the nations. But if ye turn unto me, and keep my commandments, and do them; though there were of you cast out unto the uttermost part of the heaven, yet will I gather them from thence, and will bring them unto the place that I have chosen to set my name there. Now these are thy servants and thy people, whom thou hast redeemed by thy great power, and by thy strong hand.” Nehemiah 1:8-10

To be continued...

And it came to pass, when I heard these words, that I sat down and wept, and mourned certain days, and fasted, and prayed before the God of heaven, Nehemiah 1:4

Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour: 1 Peter 5:8

Questioning our Individualism and its Affect on the Church Ephesians 4:1-16

Introduction: The individualism of our culture often bleeds into the church. For instance, Amer-ican Christians tend to have a “lone ranger” mentality. We of-ten think our spiritual growth and health only involves God and us. Sure, we view the church as a means to serve our spiritual needs, but if the church does not serve us in the way we want, we go shopping for another church or retreat into a purely individual religious experience. In a similar way, Christians often talk about pursuing God’s “calling.” Unsur-prisingly, this calling is thought of in individual terms, as if God directs an individual to pursue some ministry or task apart from connection to others.

The influence of these cultural assumptions on Christians and the church makes for unhealthy and unbiblical ideas and prac-tices. The Bible’s assumptions and instructions differ from our culture’s as Ephesians 4:1-16 will demonstrate. This passage calls us to be unified to a local body and dependant on the di-verse gifts and roles within that body to grow us into Christ-like-ness. Moreover, we are called to serve through the local body and Church leaders equip Christians to carry out that ministry. Pastors and church leaders are just one part of the body, and Christ is the true head whom every member follows.

Context: The book of Ephesians can be divided into two halves. In the first three chapters, the Apostle Paul lays out the gospel and the wonderful blessings that accompany salvation through Christ; a salvation totally based

on God’s grace and not on our works. In the last three chapters, Paul explains how this salvation should be lived out. This pivot to application occurs at Ephesians 4:1 with the statement, “As a prisoner for the Lord, then, I urge you to live a life worthy of the calling you have received.” If we wanted to amplify the context, we could place the following phrase before 4:1, “Based on the great-ness of Christ’s love and fullness that I just told you about, . . .”

Ephesians 4:1-16 As a prisoner for the Lord, then, I urge you to live a life worthy of the calling you have received. 2 Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love. 3 Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace. 4 There is one body and one Spirit– just as you were called to one hope when you were called– 5 one Lord, one faith, one baptism; 6 one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all. 7 But to each one of us grace has been given as Christ apportioned it. 8 This is why it says: “When he ascended on high, he led captives in his train and gave gifts to men.” 9(What does “he ascended” mean except that he also descended to the low-er, earthly regions? 10 He who descended is the very one who ascended higher than all the heavens, in order to fill the whole universe.) 11 It was he who gave some to be apostles, some to be prophets, some to be evange-lists, and some to be pastors and teachers, 12 to prepare God’s people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be

built up 13until we all reach uni-ty in the faith and in the knowl-edge of the Son of God and be-come mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ. 14 Then we will no longer be infants, tossed back and forth by the waves, and blown here and there by every wind of teaching and by the cunning and craftiness of men in their deceitful scheming. 15 Instead, speaking the truth in love, we will in all things grow up into him who is the Head, that is, Christ. 16 From him the whole body, joined and held together by every supporting ligament, grows and builds itself up in love, as each part does its work. (NIV)

Ephesians 4:1-6. “I urge you to live a life worthy of the calling you have received . . . There is one body and one Spirit–just as you were called to one hope when you were called.” This charge to live a life worthy of your calling leads into a section on church unity and function. This “calling,” therefore, should not be thought of in individualistic terms – the Ephesians were called by God to be a part of the community of the redeemed. Their individual call-ing and the calling of the church were inseparable, as verses 2-4 confirm when describing what living a life worthy of the calling entails: being humble, bearing with one another in love, and making every effort to keep the unity of the one Spirit and one body. In case our American indi-vidualism makes us reluctant to receive this truth, verse 4 makes it clear that the one body and one Spirit are part of the hope that these Christians were called

to. In fact, the unity of the church body proclaims our faith – that there is only one God, and that faith in his Christ is the only av-enue by which God redeems hu-manity, and our baptism into the body signifies our entrance into Christ’s unified body on earth.

It is instructive that when Paul pivots to application and how our great salvation is to be lived out in Ephesians 4, he starts with the idea of being unified with the body of Christ. Application of the gospel is meant to be done in close fellowship to the church body.

Application point: You cannot live your life in accord with God’s calling apart from the local church body. In other words, if you are not consistently fellowshipping in a local body of Christians you are outside God’s will and calling for you. Christ calls each Chris-tian to be a part of his body; he calls us not to casual contact, but active unity with the church body. If you are not plugged in to a local church body, actively seek out a local body. You can-not fulfill your calling otherwise. (If you’re still checking out Jesus – focus on faith in Him, being a part of his body requires faith in him and his Spirit.) If you just show up at church services, ask if that behavior is truly exhibiting the unity, dependence, and ser-vice reflected in this passage. If not, make a list of ways you can unify and contribute to the unity of the church. Even folks who have heavy responsibilities and little time can pray and seek out an accountability partner. They can send cards or emails to encourage people. They can deepen their understanding of Christ and the gifts he has

given them so that when they do have opportunity, they are ready.

Ephesians 4:7-16. In case we think this unity means that we are all exactly alike, verses 7-11 describe different gifts being giv-en and working within the body. The quotation of Psalm 68:18 is used to introduce the process of Jesus ascending into heav-en and sending down spiritual gifts to people through his Holy Spirit. These verses contain sev-eral interpretive difficulties, but the overall idea is reflected in many other New Testament pas-sages – especially Acts 2 and 1 Corinthians 12. When Christ ascended to God’s right hand, He poured out his Holy Spirit on the community of believers and that outpouring included spiritu-al gifts so that the church could be Christ’s “body,” his hands and feet, to continue and extend Christ’s work on the earth. In order to accomplish miraculous and world-altering things, many different gifts are needed, just as a physical body needs many different parts to run, or jump, or have a conversation. Each part is different, but each contributes to the unified goal of achieving whatever the head calls it to do. But a foot alone cannot run, it needs the knees, it needs the heart pumping blood, and the blood needs to be oxygenated by the lungs and given nutrition by the digestive system.

Similar to 1 Corinthians 12, Ephesians 4 calls the church to function like a body—unified in faith and mission, but diverse in gifting to carry out that unified calling.

Application point: Your indi-vidual calling and gifting as a Christian are bound up in the diverse gifts of the larger church

body. Without the support and interworking of other parts of the body and their differences – you will not be able to fulfill all that God intends for you. The body imagery emphasizes this truth in that a foot is essential to run-ning, but a severed foot cannot run without the diverse gifts of the rest of the body. For many of us, this truth not only requires us to repent of our individualism but our pride as well. We need the body to accomplish all God has for us. If you haven’t acknowl-edged your need for the body, and the people within the body who may be very different from you, acknowledge that truth to God. Then, seek out different people in the body and discov-er how your differences can be used to fulfill Christ’s calling to-gether.

For some, this application will be difficult because of trust issues. In your experience perhaps oth-er members of the body have been infected or wounded, and they passed on that hurt to you.

If you depend on others, will you get hurt again? Probably. True interconnectedness and unity means that when one part of the body is sick or hurt the whole body suffers (1 Corinthians 12:26). A healthy body, however, can fight off infection and heal. In fact, there are certain parts of the body that specialize in heal-ing—just as in churches there are those peacemakers and healers who bring restoration to hurting members. But will you risk the hurt? If you don’t, then you are risking, actually you are guaranteeing, coming short of all that God has called you to be and do.

Focusing down on Ephesians 4:11-16, we see that God placed

And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth. John 1:14

Page 32: WISDOM FOR THE HEARTwisdomfortheheart.in/img/pdf/October - 2017.pdf“Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father

But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for theyare foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned. 1 Corinthians 2:14

some gifts and people in the body to build it up and help it grow to maturity. As verse 11 says these are “apostles, prophets, evange-lists, pastors and teachers.” For clarity’s sake we will set aside the thorny question of how apos-tles and prophets function in to-day’s church and agree that at the very least the prophets and apostles have provided us with the scriptures to serve as our authority and guide in following God. Evangelists grow and build up the body in bringing in new people into the church so that the body grows.

What about pastors and teach-ers; how do they build up the body? Some churches act as if “the pastor” is the person who performs the ministry of the church. The congregation shows up on Sunday, the pastor minis-ters the word through a sermon. If someone gets sick or has a question, the pastor may visit during the week. The church is not thought of as a body, but a spiritual restaurant for spiritual food. The pastor is the restau-rant manager who feeds his cus-tomers for pay. If the customer is unsatisfied, they will bring their business elsewhere. This think-ing departs from the biblical con-cept of a church and a pastor.

What is a pastor’s job? As Ephe-sians 4:12-13 states, pastors are leaders who are “to prepare God’s people for works of ser-vice, so that the body of Christ may be built up until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowl-edge of the Son of God and be-come mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ.” I prefer other transla-tions that use the term “equip.” Pastors equip God’s people to carry out the ministries in the

church so that the body can be built up and reflect Christ in its unity and mission.

An essential part of that equip-ping is leading the body into a unity of faith and knowledge of Christ. The method for attaining that unity of faith and knowledge is teaching the scriptures and leading people to be more like Christ. The measure of a mature Christian (and a mature church) is not how long you have been there, how high you score in Bi-ble trivia, or how many tasks you perform. The measure of a ma-ture Christian is Christ-likeness. Ephesians 4:13-15 proclaims Christ-likeness as the goal of Christian and church growth and the measure of spiritual maturity.

Application: Pastors are im-portant, but the “ministers” of the church are the members. Minis-try within the church must come from a unified body fulfilling the calling of Christ, the head of the body. A good pastor gives church members the tools and teaching needed to fulfill their calling with-in the body. Ultimately, however, the church goals and function-ing are the same no matter who is the pastor. The church is the laboratory where members are equipped, grow, and exercise their calling. Every member is called to BE the church–called to be unified as a body with Christ as the head.

Those infected with individualis-tic or consumer Christianity will resist this truth. Like a consumer, they will withdraw their business when things aren’t to their lik-ing. For example, a pastor insti-tutes changes to encourage the church to be on mission or to use more people’s gifting. A consum-er Christian likes things as they are (that is why they are there),

so they stop coming in response to the changes. The pastor can be fulfilling his role, but consum-er Christians will undermine the unity of the church because they have an unbiblical picture of the church. If the church is a fami-ly or a body, then we serve the head of the church (Jesus) and seek out the health and unity of the whole body.Unbiblical assumptions about the church lead to unreasonable assumptions about church mem-bers and church pastors. For instance, it is unreasonable to think that a pastor will grow the church without changing things. If the church is made up of a unified body of people (as Ephe-sians 4:1-16 describes), then new people mean a “new,” or at least a changed, church. In a similar way, it is unreason-able to think that a pastor can bring health and unity to an un-healthy or split church without major changes within the body’s members and systems. From my observations an unhealthy pas-tor can sicken and bring down a church, but a healthy pastor can-not restore an unhealthy church without major changes within the rest of the body. If you think your church just needs a “good pas-tor” to fix its problems, then you are probably holding on to an un-realistic and unbiblical concept of the church and a pastor’s role. Instead, a church should focus on growing in Christ-likeness and humbly seek to be equipped to live out Christ’s calling as a unified body. Ultimately our calling is to be like Christ – who gave his life for his church in the ultimate display of self-sacrificial service. If we pursue that calling and unity in the body, our church will be used mightily in our town and throughout the world.

Continued...THINGS TO DO IN YOUR YOUTH

: Ecclesiastes 11:9--12:2 :To achieve God’s appointed goals in your youth, so you’ll have a big impact for Christ later. Introduction: Many people wreck their life because they wreck their youth. Many of us have picked up wrong ideas in our youth that have caused problems for us later in life. We must find God’s ways early in life, believe them and obey them always. The Bible is God’s textbook on life. It tells us: a) How to get to heaven. b) How to avoid sin and the trouble sin brings in this life. Question: What does the Bible say that we should achieve in our youth? 1. Avoid bad peers. ‘My son, if sinners entice

thee, consent thou not.’ Proverbs 1:10-19. ‘Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly.’ (Psalm 1:1-3).

2. Take heed to God’s Word. (Ps 119:9,11). Delight and meditate in God’s Word day and night. Ps.1:2,3.

3. Seek wisdom, understanding and increase learning. (Proverbs 1:2-6).

‘the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.’ (Proverbs 9:10).

4. Listen to and obey your parents’ instructions. (Proverbs 1:8,9).

5. Be wise unto salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. (II Timothy 3:15).

6. Learn the Holy Scriptures from childhood. (II Timothy 3:15).

7. Remember now thy Creator in the days of thy youth .(Ecclesiastes 12:1). ‘Remember’ means to:

a) Receive Jesus Christ as your Saviour (John 1:12);

b) Surrender all areas of your life to Jesus Christ as Lord (Romans12:1,2);

c) Study God’s Word to prepare for God’s plan for your life (II Timothy 2:15);

d) Seek His will for your life and fulfil it (Matthew 6:33);

e) Develop a close relationship with God (James 4:8; Psalm 73:28);

f) Realise God created you. All that we have comes from God. Reject evolution’s lies.

8. Flee youthful lusts. (II Timothy 2:22; Proverbs 7:1-27).

9. Follow righteousness, faith, charity, peace with fellow believers. (II Timothy 2:22).

Partnership in Mission: A Biblical/Theological Perspective

If any man will do his will, he shall know of the doctrine, whether it be of God,or whether I speak of myself. John 7:17

Continued...Teamwork – Partnership in Action

The church at Corinth suffered from disunity. Paul was a missionary pioneer in the city. He introduced the gospel to the Corinthians and planted a church there. He was followed later by a Christian leader and preacher named Apollos. Tragically, the people of the church became divided into factions, each pledging their loyalty to the different leaders.

This situation was unacceptable to Paul. He used a practical example from everyday agricultural life near Corinth to teach the church an eternal truth. Corinth had been famous for centuries for its grapes. Using the imagery of the vineyards and fields on the plain below the city,19 he responded to their division and disunity with these words in 1 Cor 3:5-9:

What then is Apollos? And what is Paul? Servants through whom you believed, even as the Lord gave opportunity

to each one. I planted, Apollos watered, but God was causing the growth. So then neither the one who plants nor the one who waters is anything, but God who causes the growth. 8Now he who plants and he who waters are one; but each will receive his own reward according to his own labor. For we are God’s fellow workers; you are God’s field, God’s building.

Paul’s point was simple. He and Apollos were not competitors. They were fellow workers serving in God’s field at Corinth. They were allies in the mission, co-laborers on God’s farm.20 Paul planted the seeds of the gospel. Apollos watered them through his ministry. However, workers such as Paul and Apollos were merely servants. They themselves could not produce any spiritual results. Only God can produce growth, yet believers are privileged to work in cooperation with God in his mission.

Paul’s Model of Partnership

Although a number of principles can be drawn from the Bible for partnership in missions, Apostle Paul’s ministry is relevant because most of it was undertaken in the context of comprehensive partnership in mission and ministry. Paul demonstrated a keen sense of partnership with God, since he was fully aware that his work involved fulfilling God’s plan of salvation for all mankind. Therefore, he always considered himself as “God’s co-worker.” This collaboration at the vertical level does not denote an equal partnership. At best it indicates the bipolarity of ministry.21 However, he implied that as a co-worker with God, he had the authority of God himself. Because of this sense of partnering with God, Paul developed a strong commitment to partnership which was evident in various aspects of his life and ministry.

Partnership with the Church

Paul’s life and ministry clearly demonstrate significant partnership with the Church. He was initially associated with the churches in Jerusalem and

Page 35: WISDOM FOR THE HEARTwisdomfortheheart.in/img/pdf/October - 2017.pdf“Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father

Dr. Atul Aghamkar

For I suppose I was not a whit behind the very chiefest apostles. 2 Corinthians 11:5

Antioch and then eventually with those churches that he was instrumental in planting. He maintained strong links with the church in Jerusalem, without whose blessings his mission to the Gentiles might have been in jeopardy.

For at least two decades, the Jerusalem church was regarded as the ‘mother church’ and

Paul was wise enough to recognize the importance of keeping in touch with this influential church. Even when he moved out of Jerusalem and went as a missionary from Antioch to Asia Minor, Paul kept his commitment to the mother Church in Jerusalem.

After moving to Antioch and being sent from there as a missionary, again Paul’s basic approach to missions was strongly Church centered. He planted churches and established meaningful networks and partnership between them (Acts 11:30; 21:19). Roland Allen’s comments on this are worth noting: “Paul did not set out on his missionary journey as a solitary prophet, the teacher of a solitary individualistic religion. He was sent forth as the messenger of a Church, to bring men into fellowship with that body.”1 According to Allen, Paul’s mission was strongly anchored in the Church and he never forgot the central place of the Church even as he went on his missionary journeys. Paul maintained a 1 Roland Allen, Mission-ary Methods: St. Paul’s our Ours? (Grand Rapids: Eerdmans, 1962), 126.

strong sense of commitment and accountability to the sending church while working as a missionary to the Gentiles (Acts 14:27). Such commitment to the churches enabled him to develop meaningful partnerships for his ongoing mission and ministry to Jews and Gentiles in Asia Minor and beyond. Consequently, Paul’s partnership with the sending Church, as well as with the churches that he was instrumental in planting, proved to be fruitful in his overall ministry.

Along with such partnership with the Church, it must be noted that Paul, a high caliber mission theologian substantially related with the Church, providing his theological, missiological as well as pastoral input for the overall growth of the Church. The Church in Asia Minor received a substantial missional impetus and direction in and through Paul’s letter. The content of his letters to various churches and the issues he covered in those letters proves this point beyond any doubt.

Drawing implications from Paul’s partnership with the Church, the Indian Church has a long way to go in developing meaningful partnership with so called ‘missional theologians’ like Paul in contemporary India. India has seen a significant emergence of contextual as well as missional theologians over this past century or so. These theologians have substantially raised, articulated and proposed some creative and pragmatic ways of doing mission and ministry in India, but most of them have had very little or

no relationship with the Indian Church. Consequently, what the theologians and missiologists have articulated has little to do with the ground realities and issues the Church is facing. Hence the need of meaningful partnership with the Church and the theologians and missiologists is necessary. Ways and means should be explored to enable these two to work in partnership so that much of the theological and missiological articulation could be well integrated with the local church to produce effective Christian witness among the people of India.

Reaching Indians for Christ is a complex and demanding task and it can never be done by one single church. Hence a larger partnership with the churches across the sub-continent is required. Learning from Paul’s model of partnership with various churches, efforts should be made to develop a broader network of Church based partnership. Such partnership should be explored both at the local church levels as well as at regional and national levels.

WISDOM FOR THE HEART34 October 2017

I have spent most of my life trying to change myself. Maybe it was the voice of condemnation that I grew up with or maybe the small, well-intentioned Baptist church I grew up in. Could it be because I looked to others to define myself, or how I hung my identity on their thoughts of me? All in all, I had been convinced that I was not enough. I was not enough for those closest to me, and I was not enough to receive God’s love and blessing. I know, it sounds a little crazy. Sometimes even now I wake up thinking about how to win, to embrace the peace and love my heart so desperately needs. I did it all. I memorized scripture, attended prayer meetings, and I even lead worship. All of this coupled with dedicating my actual life and vocation to His Kingdom.

Bill Hybels of Willow Creek Church in Chicago asked a simple question about formulating your personal theology or belief systems. He asked, “Does it work? Does what you believe work? Does it do what it is supposed to? Does it achieve the goal it promises?”

in the belief that the person and personality that I have been given is incomplete. In fact, I think part of why I had a heart attack 2 years ago was because of me climbing this hill, trying to make myself into something I wasn’t for the sake of being looked upon as a success. Don’t get me wrong, I am a firm believer in hard work. I do believe it changes us but I also believe that there are some places in our hearts that can only be changed by being in the presence of Jesus. That there are spaces in our inner being that can only be accessed by the Holy Spirit.

For me, the reality of the tragedy of my heart attack takes me there. Being helpless, surrendered and undone brings us into that still place where we can just be in His presence. It is a place of waiting, a place of stillness, a place to give your heart permission to feel. So many things tell us not to feel, not to emote what we really think. “Don’t be angry, don’t cry, don’t feel sorrow” We’re told to hide those parts of ourselves. People don’t

want to see them. It would make them feel awkward and it will lead them to reject you, leaving you alone and unloved.

This place can be so scary but as we learn to trust, and really let our hearts let go and trust the movement of the Spirit, I believe that over time, those are the places where we see the most change. That the battle is really the Lord’s as we surrender more and more of who we are into His hands.

Challenge: Find rest in God and remain in this stillness with your Heavenly Father as you face life’s battles.

The messenger arrived after Epaphroditus did in Rome with the church's gift. Paulheard of the circumstances concerning this congregation and penned this letter to them.He assured them of Epaphroditus' good health, of his gratitude for their gift, and of his own current disposition in jail. He offered them instructions regarding problems in the church and sent the letter back. It is this letter that we now examine in detail.

Paul's opening remarks are typical of all his epistles in that they include earnest prayers and words of commendation. Yet, this is no shallow introduction. Through the first eleven verses, we are exposed to his outlook on life. He does not dwell on his harsh prison conditions or on his possible death. He does not ignore these things. Yet, his attitude towards them differs from others who focus on their own personal comfort in this life only. Paul transcends this and in the process reveals how to build a strong church ministry.

We can follow his example in the way he views life.

Paul displays three characteristics of a healthy, God-centered outlook on the church. First, he foc uses on what God values. Second, he practices fellowship as God intended it to be practiced. Last, he establishes proper priorities. Before any specific issues can be dealt with to bolster the congregation in Philippi, he first sets the tone. This outlook still impacts believers today.

Focus on what God values (Philippians 1:3-6)

3 I thank my God in all my remembrance of you, 4 always in every prayer of mine for you all making my prayer with joy, 5 because of your partnership in the gospel from the first day until now. 6 And I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ.

In verses 3-6, Paul offers thanksgiving to God. The reason He gives thanks is certainly not

because of his painful prison experience. No one wants to be shut up in isolation insqualor conditions. Rather, he rejoices because he sees that the things that are importantto God are occurring, even as a result of his imprisonment.• God values the spiritual transformation of lives (vs. 3-5)It has been ten years since Paul first came to the city of Philippi. He now sat in prison eight hundred miles away in the city of Rome. After his greeting in the first two verses, he digs into his thoughts. The first word on paper is one of gratitude. He is thankful to God for every believer when he thinks of them. He prays for them, but he is truly thankful for what is happening in Philippi. The reason for this is their "partnership in the gospel" (v. 5). This fellowship was primarily manifested in their financial gift they brought to him. This proved to Paul that they really cared about the work he was doing to spread the gospel of Christ. To be continued...
