    WISCONSIN WOMEN'S BASKETBALL 2018 19 RECORD BOOK

Success breeds success and that’s exactly what head coach Jonathan Tsipis is hoping for with the Wisconsin women’s basketball program. Following the success of other Badger teams, Tsipis is looking for the same as he rebuilds the UW program.

“He knows what it takes to play at a championship level, and then you go out and do it on your own,” Director of Athletics Barry Alvarez said. “I liked the fact he went out and took his own team and built it. “He’s a guy that will get out in the community and sell the program. He was everything I was looking for.” The 2015 Atlantic 10 Conference Coach of the Year, Tsipis was named the seventh head coach in Wisconsin women’s basketball history on March 31, 2016.

Rebuilding a programRebuilding a programIn his first two years at Wisconsin, the Bad-gers are creating a foundation for success. In his first season, the Badgers landed two players on the honorable mention All-Big Ten team and won a game in the Big Ten Tournament for the first time since 2013. Senior Avyanna Young and junior Cayla McMorris were recog-nized by the confer-ence as UW played some of its best ball of the year late in the season, winning its last three Big Ten games. Tsipis also won his 100th career game as Wisconsin downed Illinois on Feb. 22, 2017. In 2018, McMor-ris repeated as an honorable mention All-Big Ten pick while junior Marsha Howard

joined her on the team. McMorris also became the 25th UW player to record 1,000 points for her career. On the court, the Badgers battled their opponents, as 15 games were decided by 10 points or less. Wisconsin also turned the ball over just 15.3 times per game, which ranks fourth on the UW season record list.

Making a national statementMaking a national statementTsipis spent four seasons as the head coach at George Washington University, re-estab-lishing the Colonials as a national power and a dominant team in the Atlantic 10. He inher-ited a team that went 11-18 the year before he arrived and led them to a 55-11 record, two A-10 titles and consecutive NCAA tour-nament appearances in the last two seasons. In his four years, GW was 92-38 (.708). “I’ve seen Wisconsin, in so many other sports, win championships,” Tsipis said. “I kept saying, ‘Why can’t Wisconsin (women’s) basketball do that same thing?’” After a debut season that ended with a 14-16 mark, Tsipis guided George Wash-ington to a 23-11 overall record in 2013-14, tying for second in the conference and advancing to the third round of the WNIT. The Colonials were one of the top offensive teams in the country, ranking 35th in the country, averaging 76.1 points per game. That was a 17.2 points per game improvement

from the previous season. Freshman Caira Washington was named the A-10 Rookie of the Year. In 2014-15, Tsipis was voted the Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year after leading GW to a 29-4 record, setting a program mark for wins and winning percentage. The Colonials won the A-10 regular season and tourna-ment titles, earning their first berth in the NCAA tourna-ment since 2008. George Washington was ranked as high as 19th in the national

WISCONSIN WOMEN'S BASKETBALL 2018 19 RECORD BOOKpolls, ending the year ranked 25th in the USA Today Coaches Poll. The Colonials established themselves as one of the top rebounding teams in the nation, leading all of Division I teams with a plus-13.8 rebounding margin. Junior Jonquel Jones was named A-10 Player of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year as well as honor-able mention All-America by the Associated Press and WBCA. George Washington returned to the NCAA tournament in 2016, recording its third-straight 20-win season by going 26-7. The Colonials won a share of Atlantic 10 regular season title at 13-3 and won their second straight conference tournament title. Jones repeated as an AP and WBCA honor-able mention All-American and was a first-round WNBA draft pick, selected sixth overall by the Los Angeles Sparks. She also was a candidate for several national player of the year awards, including the Naismith Trophy, Wade Trophy and Wooden Award. “That starts with the outreach with the high school coaches and the AAU coaches.

It’s going to be an open-door policy—practice, shoot-arounds, games —as much as we can have that involvement. “Wisconsin is just a state that prides itself on blue-collar work and I love that fact that kids would have that option to say, ‘I can go to Wisconsin and write the next history of women’s basketball.’”

Learning under a legend at Notre DameTsipis arrived at George Washington after serving on the coaching staff at the University of Notre Dame for nine seasons, including his last four years as associate head coach and recruiting coordinator. The Fighting Irish compiled a 228-77 record during his tenure, advancing to the NCAA tournament every year. Under Hall of Fame coach Muffet McGraw, Tsipis aided the Fighting Irish to five Sweet 16 appearances, including national runner-up finishes his last two seasons. As the coordinator of its nationally-ranked recruiting efforts, Notre Dame had one of the nation’s top-20 recruiting classes in each of his nine years, including three top-10 classes. One of CollegeInsider.com’s Top 10 as-sistant coaches in the nation in 2011, and a 2009 BasketballScoop.com Assistant Coach of the Year, Tsipis mentored four All-Americans and eight WNBA draft picks, including five first-round selections, at Notre Dame. His

student-athletes also earned eight All-Big East selections, and three were invited to USA Basketball National Team trials. Tsipis’ success stories include All-Amer-icans Natalie Novosel, Jacqueline Batteast, Charel Allen and Lindsay Schrader. On the court, Tsipis helped coordinate Notre Dame’s game plans that resulted in more than 30 wins over nationally-ranked opponents, including six wins over perennial power Connecticut. Starting a coaching careerTsipis went to Notre Dame after one season as the director of men’s basketball operations at UNC-Greensboro, where he worked under Fran McCaffery, now the head men’s basket-ball coach at Iowa. He spent two seasons as an assistant men’s coach at Elon University in North Carolina and one year as the top men’s assistant at Le Moyne College in Syracuse, New York. Tsipis also spent three seasons on the men’s basketball staff at Cornell University and one year as a student staff assistant at Duke under legendary coach Mike Krzyzewski. In addition, his niece Amanda played basketball at Notre Dame

from 2004-08, serving as team captain her final year and winning the program’s Spirit Award each of her four seasons. Assistant Coach Craig Carter

Craig Carter is in his third year as an as-sistant coach with the Badgers. “Craig and I have known each other for a long period and he has a great reputation as being an outstand-ing coach,” Tsipis said. “He was an accomplished player

at Rutgers and has helped recruit and develop high level student-athletes. “Craig worked with Fran McCaffery on two different occasions and knows the detailed efforts I am looking for in the area of scouting and game planning. He is a great fit with Sasha Palmer, Myia McCurdy and Michelle Nason, serving as great role models and mentors for our student-athletes.” Carter comes to Wisconsin after serving as a men’s assistant coach at Cornell Univer-sity. He has also coached at Siena College and his alma mater Rutgers University. Carter was a four-year letter winner for the Scarlet Knights from 1987-91, serving as a two-time team captain. Rutgers participated in three post-season tournaments, including the NCAA tournament in 1989 and 1991. He was also selected to the Atlantic-10 Conference All-Tournament team in 1989. Carter gradu-ated from Rutgers in 1992 with a bachelor’s degree in English. Tsipis and Carter both coached under Fran McCaffery during their careers. Carter replaced Tsipis as the director of operations at UNC Greensboro under McCaffery. Carter followed McCaffery to Siena College, serving as an assistant coach for one season. “Jonathan and I are from the same coach-ing family tree,” Carter explained. “We have been mentored and taught by the same coach. When this job came open, Fran recommended me to Jonathan. Tsip is a great guy and Wisconsin is a great school. It’s a great op-

portunity and something I couldn’t say no to. I had other opportunities that I actually walked away from to give this job a really good look and I’m glad it worked out. “I bring a high-level of preparation, confidence and belief. I think the main thing you can do with a player that you mentor is let them know how much you care about them – preparing them and believing in their talent, their ability to get better. I think we’re going to be able to do that. It’s a great mix of personali-ties, enthusiasm and energy that’s going to take the Wisconsin program to new levels.” Carter has coached three all-rookie hon-orees and one conference player of the year in Kenny Hasbrouck at Rutgers. He has twice participated in the NCAA Achieving Coaching Excellence program and is a member of the National Association of Basketball Coaches.

    Assistant Coach Myia Johnson

A former stand-out at Rutgers, Myia Johnson is in her third season as an assistant coach with the Badgers. She works primarily with UW’s wing players, aiding Cayla McMor-ris to two honorable mention All-Big Ten honors. A native of

Cincinnati, Ohio, Johnson (then McCurdy) came to Wisconsin after serving as the video coordinator at Ohio State for three seasons. The Buckeyes advanced to the NCAA tourna-ment two years, including a Sweet 16 appear-ance in 2016. At OSU, Johnson managed film exchange and scouting duties. She was also responsible for monitoring the academic prog-ress of team members and supervising player social media. Other responsibilities included assisting with on-campus recruiting visits, recruiting qualified male student-athletes as practice players, student life liaison, co-day camp coordinator and co-community service coordinator. “We are very excited to have Myia join our staff,” said Tsipis. “She has been a big part of Ohio State’s resurgence in the Big Ten. She was a part of four NCAA tournament teams at Rutgers and played professionally overseas. “She has leadership skills, deep ties to the Midwest, and is an eager leaner who has worked with tremendous people that I know and respect. She embodies the determination and well-rounded abilities we expect of our student-athletes. I look forward to working with her here at Wisconsin.” Prior to Ohio State, Johnson served as an administrative assistant/video coordina-tor at South Florida for one season. She was involved in the day-to-day operations of

the women’s basketball program, working directly with head coach Jose Fernandez as his personal assistant and was in charge of all travel and expense reports while assisting with recruiting visits, academic mentoring and the marketing and promotions for summer camps Johnson graduated from Rutgers in 2010 with a bachelor’s degree in sport management and a minor in sociology. She was a four-year letter winner for Basketball Hall of Fame coach C. Vivian Stringer and the Scarlet Knights from 2006-10, appearing in two Sweet 16s, an Elite Eight and one national championship game. She was co-captain of the 2009-10 squad, averaging 4.3 points and 4.5 rebounds per game and was Rutgers’ defensive player of the year as a senior in 2010.
