Wireless PowerApplications in Bridge Monitoring

September 13, 2007

Presented by RF On

Project Overview

Demonstrate the feasibility of wireless power transmission through the example of wireless bridge monitoring sensors.

Goals• Wireless power collection

• Characterization of low power transceivers (TNC’s)

• Develop at least one sensor type

• Separate antennas for power and communication

• Bi-directional serial communication between sensor and base station

• Communication through 1” of concrete

Hardware Block Diagram

Base Station• MSP430

– Low Power– Institutional knowledge

• TNC– Nordic– TI– Linx

• Interface to PC– USBSerial board

Sensors• Temperature

• Humidity

• Vibration (Accelerometer)

• Force/Strain

• Displacement

• Chemical content (Cl-)

Task AssignmentsMr. Sutton

– Director of Software Development

Mr. Falkenstein– Procurement Director– Director of Antenna Research– CFO

Ms. Ditlevson– VP of Documentation Resources

Mr. McDougle– Director of Hardware Development– Acting President

Risk Analysis/Mitigation• Team skill sets

– Weak on software

• Part availability

• Sensor packaging

• Power requirements

• Leakage from storage element

• RF propagation in concrete

• Uncertain of processing power of base station

• Force majeure
