Wireless Networking:

It’s the technology that enables 2 or more computers to communicate using standard network protocols without the use of network cables .

The Industry standard for this is the IEEE –802.11

Components Of A Wireless Network

• There are 2 types of wireless networks :

Type 1:

Number of computers each equipped with a wireless networking interface card.

2nd Type of Wireless Networks

•These use an access point as a base station .

•Hardware Access Point

Software Access Point :

The Access Point is software controlled .

Wireless Networking Standards:

IEEE 802.11 is the standard adopted for wireless networks.

This Standard deals with the underlying technology dealing with radio waves as well as data transmission.

The 802.11 standard governs all aspects of Radio Frequency Wireless Networking.

Range OF Wireless Networking :

Depends on the access points .

The access points have a finite range within which a wireless connection can be maintained between the client computer and the access point.

As the medium is empty space the range differs for indoors & outdoors.

Increasing The Range:The range can be increased by increasing the number of access points.

Security

Security in Wireless networking is achieved by a form of encryption which provides privacy comparable to that of a traditional wired network.

Ultimately:

Wireless cards are analogous to Ethernet cards.

Free Space is analogous to Ethernet cables.
