 A DEFAMILIARIZATION OF COLLEGE LIFE

This theme will Wired be able to capture the free-spirited nature of teenagers and young adults; but at the same time, give it a little twist of defamiliarization by way of estrangement in another light, another angle, or another vision. Defamiliarization

• “‘Defamiliarization’ … essentially means to view an object and unravel its layers and uses. I.e. look at the clouds as a playground for angels/a bearer of tears or the heaven and earth divide opposed to a simple cloud to warn us a bad day is on its way. The first two examples I have given are also personification/metaphorical; however seeing an object in a totally different light is ‘defamiliarization’.”

• “…the main reason for ‘defamiliarizing’ objects is to gain an appreciation for your environment – to see and appreciate what others don’t. By seeing and appreciating what others don’t makes you ‘creative’, perhaps even ‘original’, but more importantly makes your readers say, ‘I never looked at it that way before.’”

• “Flashes of the Genuine: To a reader there is nothing more beautiful than when you read a sentence that describes something in a way never explored. I will go back to my previous sentence regarding the clouds being ‘the bearer of tears’. In my opinion (and your entitled to yours) I would class this statement a ‘flash of the genuine’ perhaps even poetic. I have taken an everyday object, ‘defamiliarized’ it and given it a new purpose, perhaps even a glint of a personality.”

• In photography.

o Estrangement in photography is usually accomplished by taking shots in an odd angle or a peculiar distance. Doing so will make something so normal and familiar become something strange and interesting. A photographer may also put-in random objects (while editing) that will suit the picture to be able to create one curious composition.

• In writing.

o In writing, defamiliarization is accomplished as in creative writing where writers base their works on reality, only to make it distinct from reality (it’s quite a paradox). In articles, defamiliarization can occur when the writer is able to take on a peculiar perspective in whatever he/she is writing about. To be more specific, this is just about any perspective that is beyond beyond what people would expect it to be.

o o If, for example, he/she is asked to write about a certain ACTM Event: last

year’s Verge, for example. He/she shouldn’t simply state where it was

held, who were there, the history of Verge, and the like. That would be immensely plain if not boring. What he/she should talk about are things like: what made Verge different from all other org parties; or all the sensational things that happened (not necessarily sexual. lol); or what the crowd thought Verge would be vs how it turned out; or a certain person’s narrative to the things that happened to him/her in verge (given that those happenings were stupefying and such)⎯those kinds of angles and

WITTY.

• Witty ideas attract a great audience. Humor will be able to keep our audience hooked and wanting more.

NOTE: I hope you guys get the idea. Most (if not all) of the photos here are all examples of

defamiliarization, making something familiar become unfamiliar. It was hard to look for defamiliarizations in college life (in general) which probably gives this theme a bit more leverage since it’s not yet done before, as far as I know. Anyway, if this theme isn’t as appealing as I thought for you guys, then I can still think of others.P lease inform me asap on what you guys think about this. :)

For creative dept: I really like the wired logo already. But it can also be tweaked a bit I think so that the

logo doesn’t look like it’s saying WRED. I don’t know if it’s just me hehe but I think we can put something just so we can put an “I”? Maybe something like this? I put a signal tower there hehe lol but go crazy na lang with whatever looks better. And I think we should incorporate an Actm logo in it so that wired will always be tied-up to ACTM, or, if it’s too weird, we could at least add the actm logo to the web page.

Regarding the ACTM website, I think that the layout⎯as in the placing of the links and such⎯is really good na. But the background is maybe a bit too grunge? Maybe we can keep it clean, bright and simple? Here are two sites for layouts that I find really nice: http://www.wix.com/sample/website and http://www.verynicesites.com/ TO ALL: Anyways! If you guys have any positive or negative comments, feel free to inbox me on facebook. I’m really sorry that I’m not able to join the meeting. I won’t be back until june 14. :( Until then, I’m online as much as I can. Good day to all of you!
