First, Ms. Lindsey informed me that our students collected $640 for the Trick or Treat for Unicef program. I saw a lot of proud faces as students turned in their collection boxes, and they seemed happy knowing they were helping others. On Wednesday we held our first Family Music Day of the year. Students in kindergarten through grade 2 showcased what they have learned in music classes this year. They performed dances, played instruments and sang songs to a large crowd! I want to thank Mrs. Kendall Clark, Music Director, for the hard work she put into this program and also thank the grade level teachers involved in making this a special morning for our K-2 students. Grades 3, 4, and 5 will be in March. On Thursday we were fortunate to have our third through fifth graders take part in the Nametags Educational Assembly Program. Chris Waddell, Paralympian, Author and Speaker, presented the Nametags program which “pushes students to challenge the assumptions and limitations that result from labels or Nametags we give others and ourselves.“ Mr. Waddell is the first paraplegic to summit Mt. Kilimanjaro and has medaled 13 times in the Paralympic Summer and Winter Games, among other accomplishments. He spoke to the students about his motto: It’s not what happens to you...It’s what you do with what happens to you - and we sometimes need to change our perspective to meet the challenges we face. For more information on this inspirational program, please visit www.one-revolution.org. The Holiday Boutique Committee has been busy preparing for the Friends of Winthrop’s biggest fundraiser of the year on Saturday, December 3, from 9am- 3pm. As the flyer in this newsletter states, they are looking for volunteers to serve in many different ways, so I encourage parents to reach out and lend a hand. The money raised directly benefits all students through enrichment activities, field trips, and items for the classrooms, just to name a few. A reminder that Wednesday’s dismissal is 12:05. Bus service will run an adjusted timeline, but there are no lunches that day so please send your child to school with a hardy snack. I will not be sending out a newsletter next week, so I want to wish our Winthrop community a wonderful Thanksgiving and I hope you have an opportunity to relax and enjoy time with family and friends. I always take time to reflect this time of year and am very thankful that I get to work with such great students, supportive families, and talented professionals. I have much to be thankful for.
