Cover Story

PLC Training One of the greatest features of Lewis-Clark State College Workforce Training is our rapid response to industry need. Our mission is to provide customized and short-term training to meet the need for entry level employees, upgrade training for existing employees and retraining of workers who have lost their jobs. One of the tactics we use is collaborative projects with partners. Currently, we are in partnership with North Idaho College (NIC) in two grants, one of which is for provision of training for the lumber industry. This industry is losing seasoned employees and in desperate need of trained individuals to replace them. Idaho Forest Group and Empire Lumber have teamed up with NIC and LCSC for this valuable project; we send a hearty thank-you to our industry partners for their assistance in helping us help them! One of the programs included in this grant is the Programmable Logic Control or PLC training. PLC’s are a mainstay technology in today’s manufacturing world. The PLC is the control center which directs automated machinery. Working with PLC’s requires specialized knowledge and skills to prevent costly breakdowns and maintain high productivity. The lumber industry desperately needs employees trained in PLC’s and this grant provided the means for WFT to offer it. The grant helped us purchase hands on trainers and a supplementary online program. Our classes are taught by Jeremy Fromm who is the head PLC programmer at the Lewiston Idaho Forest Group lumber mill. The training is a series with very introductory information leading to in-depth training. Previously, this training has only been available through vendors, usually at a distant location. Our ability to provide the training is a huge benefit and cost savings for the region, not only for the lumber industry but for other industries who use PLC’s. We are currently mid-way in the grant program, and are offering classes to the general public at the North Lewiston Training Center. Watch as we provide another fine example of how WFT responds to industry’s need for training.

Employers know a well-trained employee is beneficial for productivity and quality. New employees always need training and the sooner a new employee is up to speed with the job the better.
