COMING SOON ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING & CHRISTMAS PARTY 6TH DECEMBER 2018
THE NEWSLETTER OF HEADWAY ADP
In this edition of
Headlines I will talk
briefly about our
Strategic Plan,
Continuous Quality
Improvement and the
challenges faced by our
sector over the years
leading into 2020.
With the Aged Care
sector under the spotlight
we can fully expect that
the NDIS and service
provision is heading for
more scrutiny and
regulation.
Being a specialist service
I truly believe that we
have a significant
advantage over the big
guys but would simply
say this. Specialisation is
only worthwhile if we
deliver better quality than
the big providers, have
better participant
satisfaction rates and
robust and transparent
policies and procedures.

TERM 4 2018
ONWARDS
NEW CHANGES IN
BEAT HOURS: When
Headway ADP Group
Programs resume in
term 4 we will be
moving our BEAT
program times to run
from 10.30 am to 1.00
pm. This change is a
consistent starting
time of 10.30am for all
groups should ensure
that all participants
and support workers
arrive on time, every
time . Our groups start
again in the week
commencing October
15th with cooking on
the 15th and 16th and
BEAT on the 18th and
19th of October.
The Committee and
management of
Headway ADP is
committed to innovation
and giving the ABI
community a voice. We
aim to be an accessible
“hands on” team, in touch
with the front line service
recipient and intuitive
enough to address issues
that often get lost in
translation within big
corporate providers.
The road to quality will
require inputs from
everyone who works for
or receives services from
Headway ADP, and will
require an enormous
amount of research,
feedback and review.
Some of the key areas
that we will look at are:
reaching our target
audience more effectively
(participants and referral
sources), improving IT
integration, financial
forecasting and better
governance.
A brand is defined by the customer’s
experience. The experience is
delivered by ther employees.

Bill’s Message Business Manager
Most critical of all is,
individuals achieving their
NDIS plan goals, as the
latter are essential in
ensuring service viability
ongoing.
Two years into the NDIS
transition we are in a
better strategic position
than we were even twelve
months ago. We are not
just viable but we are
continuing to grow. We do
need to consolidate the
business over the next 3
years however.
South Western Area
Health will remain a key
financial supporter until
June 2020. This funding
allows us to maintain
innovative targeted
programs such as BEAT
(BRAIN, EXERCISE,
ART and TALK) that
seamlessly promote
neurological growth and
memory. Maintaining
specialist programs is a
critical point of difference
and a reason why we
remain a provider of
choice

“Sand in my shoes...sand in my sox...because someone wanted to walk on the beach... The sun and the wind was nice and the walk peaceful... Then someone almost fell into the ocean...Kathy! It was fun to have the other participants - Eric, Peter, Doug, Lee, Ari, Omar, Lisa. Nice to see different faces, to socialise with other people, to make jokes and catch up. Driftwood Cafe was nice, a good place to go once in a while. It was a little pricey but the service was good and quick. The drive through the National Park was scenic and worth the effort.”

WHO LET THE DOGS OUT WHOOF !!!!
Wednesday 22nd August, 2018 was
another fantastic day for Headway ADP.
It was the day we held our annual
celebration of Brain Injury Awareness
Week. This year we wore our favourite
footy team jerseys.
We started the day off in the park.
Participants and staff had games of
soccer, bocce and toss a footy. Working
up an appetite we headed indoors for a
delicious chicken and salad lunch.
After our meal we got down to the most
entertaining part of the day – a fashion
parade and karaoke. Whilst we had
many team jerseys represented- cricket,
NFL, football (soccer), ARL – the largest
group was those supporting the Canterbury
Bankstown Bulldogs, though they may not
have been the loudest supporters.
Karaoke was once again a hit. Participants
and staff enjoyed stepping up to the mike
to belt out a tune or two. We also saw a bit
of dancing happen, with the Nutbush
getting a few people up and grooving.
It was a great day, seeing everyone
interacting with each other, laughing and
having fun. A very positive experience for
all involved!

JUST A FRIENDLY REMINDER
THERE’S A The introduction of a new Rostering Program DEPUTY represents the culmination of a concerted effort to
continuously improve service delivery, eliminate financial leakage and reduce operational overheads.

Continuous Quality
Improvement is not just
a “Corporate Buzzword”
or slogan. It is Headway
ADP’s commitment to
our participants and the
ABI community at large.
Our view at Headway
ADP is that lived
experience and the daily
lives of participants and
carers needs to educate
our broader knowledge
and skills base,
informing the way we do
business. We certainly
know that the NDIS and
bureaucracy will impose
new quality standards
over the coming year
and a half. For Headway
ADP, this process will
involve a review of all
the activities and
services we currently
provide, ensuring that
we have staff who meet
mandatory
requirements and
provide both safety and
goal achievement. In
adopting a national
assessment and
competencies
framework Headway
ADP will need to map
our old policies
(Formed under the NSW
Disability Servivce
Standards) to a new
National Framework. We
already expect that
Headway ADP will
create and design some
new policies to meet the
changes in operational
requirements.
CONTINUOUS QUALITY IMPROVEMENT
So what does C.I mean for us all? Nationally, a push for of sector harmonisation
and consistency. There will be an increase of oversight and accountability via
the newly formed NDIS Commission. “Harmonisation” in its simplest form is
bringing all States and Territories under one disability services framework and
legislation. There will be more desktop auditing and we can certainly anticipate
a greater push to adopt NDIS on line forms.
Government will continue to fund and grow the NDIS with an expectation that
the sector matures & delivers better, quality, efficiency and effectiveness. This
said, the risks are obvious. We want our service to remain highly personalised,
and we will use a great tool in Survey Monkey to monitor learning and
competency, Our staff will participate in regular training modules via prezzi and
survey monkey. This will enable us to compare the user and support worker
experience. Participants and Support Workers will submit responses from every
survey or learning exercise they participate in. These results will be used as tool
to measure where we need to be improving as a service provider and lays a
solid platform for the future, addressing compliance and audit requirements.
I do believe small is beautiful. The big players might look good on paper, but
they frequently leave people feeling like a number. To quote a great feminist
line- the “”personal is political””. The personal experience is all that matters. It is
our role to make this happen.

STAFF PROFILES
Our staff often have
hidden talents, be it
musical, artistic or
sporting. This means
that we have great
potential to try new
things. Many have some
experience of being a
carer, parent, friend or
relative to someone who
lives with a significant
disability. Next time you
are at Headway ADP
Head Office, ask a
colleague what their
hobbies or interests are
and I am sure you will be
surprised. Finally, note
that our staffing is now
around the 25 mark, from
6 just on 2 years ago. We
have not grown out of
ambition but necessity,
and for this community, a
