To the East Brunswick Campus From Route #1 North or South: Take the Route 18 South exit. Proceed on Route 18 South for approximately four miles. Take the Rues Lane exit and continue on Rues Lane for three tenths of a mile. After a white house, turn right into the school entrance.

To the Piscataway Campus From Route #1 North or South: Take Route 18 North in the direction of New Brunswick. Go approximately 4 miles. Take the Metlars Lane - Rutgers RAC/Livingston Campus Exit. ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS: Any person (not enrolled in high school) 16 years of age and over may attend. Some courses require trade experience while others have specific prerequisites. License preparation courses have additional criteria as provided in the rules and regulations of the regulato-ry entity.

ATTENDANCE: Unless otherwise noted, classes meet weekly for three hours per session on days or evenings as noted.

CERTIFICATES: A Certificate of Completion for each course or program is issued to successful completers by Middlesex County Adult Technical Schools, subject to approval by the instructor and principal, given course or program criteria are met. Additional credentials may be available as part of, or may be attained by a student independently after, course or pro-gram completion.

COST: A Course Fee is charged for most courses and pro-grams. A student residing out of Middlesex County is charged a Course Fee plus $50.00; and, certificate programs are an additional 30% of the course fee. Senior citizens (55 years of age and older, not working full time) residing in Middlesex County are charged 80% of the Course Fee and the full amount for other fees. Senior Citizen discounts do not apply to Adult Certificate and full time programs, or to out-of-county residents. Students are expected to purchase required text-books and personal protective devices, such as safety glasses with side shields. A set Materials Fee applies to consumable instructional materials, tools, lab use, and tests. A minimal charge applies when projects are made from school supplies and taken home; such as, baked goods and birdhouses. An application fee, when required, is non-refundable.

INSURANCE: The Board of Education does not pay any medi-cal or hospital bills incurred as a result of an accident to stu-dents in the school. Individuals desiring insurance coverage must purchase coverage privately.

NOTES: Classes may be cancelled due to weather. Lost time for cancelled classes is neither made up nor subject to re-funds. The school reserves the right to cancel, reschedule or combine classes when enrollment is insufficient or other scheduling problems exist.

ONE-STOP CAREER CENTER RESOURCE PARTNER: Middlesex County Vocational & Technical Schools is a Middle-sex County Workforce Development One-Stop Career Center Resource Partner. A Job Seeker can access a wide variety of services at the One-Stop Career Center in New Brunswick and the satellite center in Perth Amboy. Some of the services of-fered include internet access, job leads and placement through job postings and referrals, resume writing workshops, job search workshops, career and vocational counseling, labor market information, and aptitude and interest testing.

REFUNDS: A full refund applies when a course or program is cancelled for administrative reasons prior to the first scheduled session. A pro-rated refund applies when the same occurs after classes have begun. NO REFUNDS ARE OFFERED AFTER THE SECOND CLASS MEETING WHEN A STUDENT WITHDRAWS. Should the school exercise the right to combine similar classes, no refunds will be offered. No refunds will be given for one day and two day classes unless it is requested 10 days before the class begins. Application Fee and Registra-tion Fee for adult certificate programs are non-refundable regardless of cause for separation.

SCHOOL CLOSINGS: In case of inclement weather or other emergency, announcement of school closings will be posted on the school website. Day school may be closed yet evening classes may be in session. Architecture & Construction

Advanced Auto CAD/Autodesk Revit Architecture– This class is a continuation of the Auto CAD level 1 course. Revit is a Building Information Modeling program. It works the way designers, drafters, and architects think. The objective of this course is to enable students to create full 3D architectural project models and set them up in working drawings. Main topics covered in the course include Understand-ing Building Information Modeling (BIM), adding walls, working with basic drawing and editing tools, creating levels and grids, creating a 3D building model with walls, curtain walls, windows, and doors, adding floors and roofs, creating standard and custom stairs and setting up sheets for plotting with text, dimensions, details, tags, and schedules. Basic Plumbing – This course is ideal for the homeowner who is interested in doing some plumbing repairs on their own or even individuals looking into plumbing as a profession. This course will cover basic areas of residential plumbing repairs and maintenance. Areas include: tub or shower repair, faucet repair and replacement, glu-ing PVC pipe and soldering copper tub-ing. Students will also learn how to clean out drains - i.e. snake out of sinks and tubs, and how to clear toilet stoppages. Additional areas of repair include: hot wa-ter heaters, replacing toilet parts and other minor plumbing repairs. Licensed Master Plumber Renewal Continuing Education - This course is designed for licensed plumbers who need to renew their licenses, as defined in PL

96 c. 158. It will be offered on an as needed, ongoing basis. Approved by the Board of Master Plumbers, the Six Hour Re-certification Program for New Jersey Licensed Master Plumbers. Participants

Home Repair and Maintenance – This course will provide the knowledge and skills needed to perform basic routine home maintenance. The instruction will focus on the following areas of the home: Interior, windows and doors, exterior and plumbing. Refrigerant Handling Certification - This course presents information and ser-vice practices needed to meet EPA re-quirements to contain, conserve, and reuse refrigerants. This program prepares the student for entry-level employment within the electrical trades. It is designed for individuals interested in changing careers, as well as those who are looking for first time employment in the field. Eight modules include class-room and hands-on instruction, field trips and seminars. Successful completers earn an OSHA card and credit hours earned may be applied to the related instruction com-ponent of a registered apprenticeship program. Curriculum includes a program orien-tation and instruction in the following courses: Multi Craft Basics; Alternating Cur-rent Loads; Magnetism, Conductors & Insulators; Motor Controls; Tools & Supports: Electrical; Transformers & Motors; and Electrical Circuits. Course fee includes regis-tration, materials and assessment fees. Classes meet Monday through Friday at the East Brunswick campus.

HEAT, VENTILATION, AIR CONDITIONING & REFRIGERATION CERTIFICATE PROGRAM

The Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning & Refrigeration Certificate Program pre-pares the student for entry-level positions in heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration maintenance. It is designed for individuals interested in changing ca-reers, as well as those who are looking to change classifications or acquire new skills within this field. Successful completers earn an OSHA card and Refrigerant Handling certification. Credit hours earned may be applied to the related instruction component of a registered apprenticeship program. Curriculum includes a program orientation and instruction in the following courses: Multi-Craft Basics; AC Basics & Refriger-ants; Sheet Metal Basics; Domestic Appliances; Heating Fundamentals, and Princi-ples of Refrigeration. PLUMBING TECHNOLOGY CERTIFICATE PROGRAM

The Plumbing Technology Certificate Program prepares the student for entry-level employment within the plumbing trades. It is designed for individuals interested in changing careers, as well as those who are looking for first time employment in the field. Shielded Metal Arc Welding Certification (3G & 4G)

This is an “Advanced” course requiring the individual to have stick welding experience using the 7018 Electrodes in the flat and horizontal positions. This is NOT for elementary or beginner candidates. The Shielded Metal Arc Welding course is designed to teach students about arc welding safety and the Shielded Metal Arc Welding process (SMAW-Plate), proper techniques and electrode selection for welding plate in various welding positions (3G,4G) to meet AWS welding code. Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to perform and pass the 3g, 4g test, as well as general entry level production and mainte-nance welding in fabrication shop, machine shop, oilfield, pipeline, petrochemical, power plant or refineries on mild steel, and carbon steel. This course contains 64 hours of practical training time for each position (64 hours for 3g and 64 hours for 4g). At the completion of the course each student will be given a practical test and upon passing will receive certification from AWS in 3g and 4g in accordance with AWS code D1.1. Admissions Process High school age youth with the approval of their parents or guardians, may apply to appropriate programs offered by the Middlesex County Voca-tional and Technical High Schools. Applications are available at the schools of all municipalities of Middlesex County. Students are offered admission to the Middlesex County Vocational and Technical High Schools based on academic achievement, career and technical evaluation, interviews and the recommendation of the guidance counselor from the local school district.

Students interested in attending our high schools at East Brunswick, Piscataway, or Perth Amboy should complete the standard high school applica-tion.

Students interested in attending the Academy for Science, Mathematics and Engineering Technolo-gies at Middlesex County College or the Academy for Allied Health and Biomedical Sciences at Woodbridge should complete an application for admission for the specific Academy of interest.

Students who require specialized programs or sup-port within any district school due to an identified educational disability, should complete the career development 9-12 grade application.

Students with disabilities interested in attending the Career Choices shared time eighteen week pro-gram for eighth grade students at the Woodbridge school, should complete the Career Choices Orien-tation application.

In instances of limited capacity for a program, ap-plicants from within the county shall be admitted first. Otherwise, qualified applicants shall be ad-mitted on a first come, first served basis.

No tuition shall be charged to residents of Middle-sex County for admission into the day high school programs, but non-resident students shall pay tui-tion as set by the board of education.

To qualify for entrance at the ninth grade level, a student must have completed the eighth grade. Transfers shall be accepted at other levels provided students have completed the work required for the level in the school from which they wish to trans-fer. Additionally, to enter at grade 12, a student must have previously completed one year of career and technical education in their career major of their choice.

Middlesex County Vocational and Technical Schools High School Career Majors

Agriscience Technology (EB) Occupational instruction in floriculture, horticulture and hydroponics introduces students to a variety of career opportunities in the Agriscience industry. Stu-dents learn about plant germination, soil content, floral design, landscaping, greenhouse management, seed cultivation, the use of hand and power equip-ment, and sales. They participate in the student or-ganization, (FFA), which encourages leadership, citi-zenship, and entrepreneurship. Graduates pursue ad-vanced degrees or may be employed as greenhouse technicians, landscape contractors, design architects, interior plantscapers, floral designers, propagation workers, groundskeepers, nursery production workers or forester aides.

Allied Health and Biomedical Sciences (ACA/W) The Allied Health and Biomedical Sciences program provides accelerated college prep students with the opportunity to take four different semester courses that introduce them to the introductory skills and knowledge of the allied health and biomedical sci-ence fields. An example of the topics covered are safety, first aid, the stages of the life cycles and re-search processes.

Architecture Technology (EB) Architecture Technology is designed to challenge students interested in architecture, building construc-tion, computers, drawing, design and engineering. Students translate design drawings into working drawings, manually or through the use of computer assisted drafting systems. They draw floor plans, elevations, sections and details of buildings, and de-sign simple buildings. Graduates are employed as drafters for Architects, Mechanical Engineers, Struc-tural Engineers, Civil Engineers, Surveyors and De-velopers.

Middlesex County Vocational & Technical Schools www.mcvts.net Automotive Collision Repair Technology (PI) Highly skilled automotive collision repair technicians and refinishers are needed to meet current and future labor market demands. Technical instruction to pre-pare students includes basic auto collision repair, alignment parts and panel replacement, glasswork, custom trim and painting. Students also gain knowledge of mechanical and suspension compo-nents, engine accessory systems, emission control systems, drive systems and climate control systems. Graduates enter employment in the trade area or en-roll in post-secondary education.

Automotive Technology (EB/PA/PI) Students interested in a career in the automotive tech-nology field are encouraged to enroll in the program. The Automotive Technology program provides stu-dents the opportunity to excel in specialized training of automotive engine operations, vehicle maintenance and repair, steering and suspension systems, comput-erized engine controls, brake systems, electrical sys-tems, fuel and ignition systems and front end align-ment. A challenging curriculum prepares students with opportunities to master skills required to pass Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certification examinations. Graduates may pursue employment, continue their education, or enroll in an Associate Degree program in Automotive Technologies at Mid-dlesex County College. This is a joint program be-tween the college and the vocational schools.

Baking (EB/PI) Graduates of the baking program enter culinary ca-reers to become bakers, pastry chefs, production workers, merchandising/marketing sales personnel, managers, supervisors and business owners. Instruc-tion is provided in production, mixing, molding, bench makeup, oven work, cake decorating, sales and delivery, sanitation and safety engineering. Students participate in storefront, buffet and banquet opera-tions.

Carpentry (PI/PA) This course emphasizes the basic skills and knowledge needed in the carpentry trade. Students learn the use of hand tools and the operation of all common woodworking machines. Students enrolled in the program also learn the basics of home con-struction, planning, design and cost estimates. Safety, mathematics and related drawing are also taught. Upon graduation, students have the opportunity to apply to an apprenticeship program or to pursue ad-vanced training.

Civil/Mechanical Engineering Technology (ACA/E) This four-year program offers the student an oppor-tunity to explore the areas of Civil and Mechanical Engineering Technology. The Civil Engineering cur-riculum offers students a practical overview of this dynamic discipline by examining the interrelated fields of structural, geo-technical, transportation and environmental engineering and construction manage-ment.

The Mechanical Engineering curriculum, which is combined with Civil Engineering, encompasses the design of such diverse systems as missiles, power-plants, robots and machine tools. The spectrum of

professional activity for the Mechanical Pre-Engineering graduate runs from research through design and development to manufacturing and sales. Because of their comprehensive training and educa-tion, mechanical engineers are often called upon to assume management positions.

Computer Assisted Drafting (PA/PI) CAD technicians work with engineers, physicists, architects, surveyors and builders. Utilizing computer assisted drafting systems, students learn how to trans-late ideas into working drawings. In a high-tech CAD laboratory, students make and read sketches and drawings, they learn the principles of orthographic projection, and skills needed for technical, architec-tural, electrical, welding and piping drafting. Gradu-ates enter a demanding labor market or pursue higher education.

Computer Systems Technology (PA/PI) Combining skills in operating systems, computer architecture and networking, the student will develop the capabilities to design, construct, install and trou-ble-shoot a range of computer systems and networks. Students are prepared candidacy as A+ and network certified technicians. This program is offered at our Perth Amboy and Piscataway Campuses. Special academic requirements must be met in order to enroll. See a Guidance Counselor for further details.

Cosmetology/Hairstyling (EB/PI) The program is designed for students to successfully achieve theoretical and practical skills needed to pass the State Board of Cosmetology license examination and enter employment. Instruction includes all phases of hairstyling, cosmetology and barbering. Students learn haircutting, shampooing, manicuring, scalp treatment, facials, makeup, hair coloring, permanent waving, hair straightening, shaving, and anatomy and physiology. Clinic experience in shop simulated labs provide opportunities for hands-on training and expe-rience in shop operations and management.

Culinary Arts (PA/PI) This course develops skills in the culinary arts and prepares students for the many occupations available in the restaurant industry. Instruction emphasizes understanding essential cooking techniques, which can then be adapted to create innovative new food items. Instruction also includes food sanitation, nutri-tion and use of equipment. In a simulated restaurant, students prepare and execute a daily lunch menu and learn front and back operations in a restaurant. Em-ployment opportunities range from sous chef, work-ing chef, pantry worker, garde manger, pastry assis-tant, or kitchen sanitation worker. Post secondary opportunities are available in various culinary schools and colleges. This program is certified by the Ameri-can Culinary Federation (ACF). Students are pre-pared to take ServSafe and ACF Certification exams.

Electrical Technology (PA) Students in the program learn the fundamentals of electrical skills and theory. Instruction includes com-mercial and residential wiring, installation and maintenance of wiring and equipment in terms of electrical code, electrical maintenance and repair, blueprint reading, and troubleshooting. Graduates secure employment as electricians and many choose to continue their education.

Electronic/Computer Engineering Technology (ACA/E) This four-year program offers the student an oppor-tunity to explore the areas of Electronic and Comput-er Engineering Technologies. The Electronic Engi-neering course introduces the student to a variety of topics including: power distribution, motors, genera-tors and electronic engineering, integrated circuits; digital and analog hardware; electromagnetic fields; and communications. Controls require the under-standing and exploitation of electrical, electronic and magnetic phenomena. As an electronic engineer technician, you can work as an engineering associate designing, refining, and building electronic equip-ment. The Computer Engineering course introduces the student to the knowledge of DC, AC semiconduc-tor, operational amplifier and microprocessor theory and their applications in analyzing systems opera-tions. The course also includes a detailed background of computer networking systems, hardware, software, and industry troubleshooting procedures. Detailed knowledge of microprocessor, embedded controller, embedded processor, and operation of multiprocessor systems and relevant troubleshooting procedures are also covered.

Global Logistics/Supply Chain Management (PI)The Global Logistics/Supply Chain Management program will prepare students to provide administra-tive, technical, and managerial support in the opera-tion of warehouses, control of inventory, parts identi-fication, and the performance of counter services for customers. Includes instruction in record-keeping, database entry, and supply logistics as well as cus-tomer and supplier relations. Students will work col-laboratively to solve contextual problems related to supply chains, warehouse planning and transportation optimization. This program will also address global implications with decisions over intermodal transpor-tation, route selection, international shipping regula-tions, emergency preparedness, cultural awareness, business ethics and international trade restrictions related to a distribution strategy, as well as environ-mental impact, business partner selection and e-commerce.

Graphic Design: Commercial Art and Illustration (EB/PA/PI) If you're interested in a career in the world of visual communications, the Commercial Art training pro-gram is for you. Students learn illustration, layout and design, painting, drawing, airbrush, and computer graphic skills. They produce the drawings or illustra-tions for advertisements, books, magazines, posters, record album and video covers, 3-D designs, fabrics, interior design and brochures. Each student prepares a portfolio of work for application purposes into em-ployment or higher education. Graduates of the pro-

gram might work as graphic artists, display workers, illustrators or paste-up artists for publishers, advertis-ing agencies and communication industries.

Health Technology (PI) Students in Health Technology are introduced to a broad range of healthcare and allied healthcare ca-reers. These services are provided either directly or indirectly to meet preventative, therapeutic, diagnos-tic, convalescent, rehabilitative, and custodial health needs of individuals and their community. The pro-gram enables students to spend time in area hospitals and health facilities exploring different career paths. Job opportunities in technical areas include long term health care facilities, radiology, operating room, car-diology, respiratory, pharmaceutical, physical therapy and dietary. Graduates can also pursue post-secondary degree programs.

Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning and Re-frigeration Technology (EB/PA) Students in the program use meters, measuring instru-ments, tools and equipment and they interpret sketch-es, schematics and diagrams. Instruction includes installation, maintenance, repair, and knowledge of duct systems for various types of equipment in resi-dential and commercial systems and solar heating technology. Graduates are employed as technicians or installers. They may work with local contractors or pursue advanced training.

Machine Tool Technology (EB) Nearly every industry employs machinists, either in production work, maintenance work or tool making. The machine trades program will challenge students who are interested in design, engineering or comput-ers. Instruction includes blueprint reading, geometry, trigonometry, machine theory, metallurgy, measuring techniques and computerized numerical control. Stu-dents work with all types of metal alloys, plastics, woods and composite materials. Graduates from the program will have skills and experiences that will benefit them in all technology based trades and col-lege studies in Mechanical Engineering or Industrial Design. Job opportunities include work as machine operators, tool and die maker's apprentice, mold mak-er apprentice, and CNC operator.

Pre-Engineering and Manufacturing Technology (EB)

The Pre-Engineering and Manufacturing Technology program will prepare students to apply basic technical skills and engineering principles to install, trouble-shoot and support the production process found in a wide array of modern manufacturing facilities. The program will include instruction on tools, materials, machine mechanics, production process, automation, quality control, instrumentation, programmable logic controllers, electricity and electronics, hydraulics, pneumatics, process control, computer aided design and robotics. Students that complete the program will have valuable skills and experiences sought by ad-vanced manufacturers as entry level advanced manu-facturing machine mechanics, automated machine operators, or mechatronics technicians. Students will also be prepared to enter into postsecondary studies in Engineering or Industrial Technology. 17

Middlesex County Vocational & Technical Schools www.mcvts.net Welding Technology (PI) This course provides a student instruction in electric welding, oxygen acetylene welding, manual and auto-matic oxygen acetylene cutting and inert gas welding using both the tungsten inert gas and metal inert gas methods and plasma arc cutting and welding. Instruc-tion also includes metallurgy and blueprint reading. Students build structures and repair broken or cracked parts according to specification. Graduates enter em-ployment in the trade or begin apprenticeship or post-secondary training. Students wishing to have a work experience may elect the work-study / School-to-Career Program. In this program student’s work for credit within the school system or on approved sites in Middlesex County. The type of work done by stu-dents is determined by availability of workstations. Typical experience is after school.

School of the Arts: Dance (EB) The School of Performing Arts educates and prepares students who have demonstrated a strong interest in the fields of Dance and Theatre. Dance students have a daily dance techniques class in modern dance, ballet or jazz. The dance curriculum includes choreography, dance production, criticism and dance history. This program provides professional training and prepara-tion for advanced post-secondary studies.

School of the Arts: Design: Commercial Art and Illustration (EB/PA/PI) If you're interested in a career in the world of visual communications, the Commercial Art training pro-gram is for you. School of the Arts: Multimedia Art and Design (EB) This course emphasizes traditional drawing, painting, layout, digital photography, multimedia computer skills, graphic design, illustration, art history, photog-raphy manipulation, printing knowledge, and multiple creative production process. Each student will have the opportunity to use tools and equipment in the multimedia art and design field and learn how to per-form the operation of the multimedia art and design trade, including: the critique and reevaluation pro-cess, drawing, painting, art history, multimedia game design, mobile technologies, and animation. Instruc-tion includes planning, setting, proofing, reading, mathematics, marking, and correcting documents and imagery.

School of the Arts: Music Performance and Tech-nology (EB) The Music Performance and Technology pro-gram will prepare students for musical performance and application of technical knowledge and skills to the composition, recording, in live and studio perfor-mance and scoring for film and multimedia. Includes instruction in music theory, appreciation and music history, composition, acoustics, audio and recording technology, computer composition, electronic music synthesis, technology-based performance, music business, careers and entertainment law.

School of the Arts: Theatre (EB) The School of Performing Arts educates and prepares students who have demonstrated a strong interest in the fields of Dance and Theatre. Students are im-mersed in an innovative arts infused curriculum that is challenging and incorporates performance-based learning. Special Needs Department Middlesex County Vocational & Technical High Schools are proud of the accomplishments achieved in providing career and technical training programs for students with special educational needs. Our schools offer specialized career and technical training for Special Education students at three of our five Vo-Tech campuses. Full time CTE/academic programs are taught entirely on the career and technical cam-pus; shared time (1/2 day) programs are taught at the career and technical campus and home high school. Our goals are for Special Education students to re-ceive New Jersey High School Diplomas, and to pre-pare for the world of work. We are pleased that 90% of our Special Education students find employment in the fields for which they are trained.

Agriculture and Ornamental Horticulture (PI) Today there is an increasing interest in the use of flowers, landscape plants and lawn services and there is a demand for trained floral and landscape design-ers, propagators, and landscaping/grounds keeping workers. Instruction in this program includes plant germination, seed cultivation, soil content, floral de-sign, landscaping, and greenhouse operations and equipment operation. Students participate in FFA, which encourages leadership, citizenship, and entre-preneurship. Graduates are employed as landscape contractors, floral designers, groundskeepers, and nursery production workers or pursue advanced train-ing.

Auto Repair (PI) Automotive Repair specialists build, maintain and repair the mechanical, electrical, and body parts of cars, trucks and buses. They may also service tractors and other gasoline and diesel powered equipment. Instruction includes automotive diagnostics, and ma-jor automotive repairs. Students learn to use motors, engine analyzers, measuring instruments, repair man-uals, and computer scan tools. Graduates find em-ployment opportunities as service technicians, shop supervisors, dealer preparation technicians, tire re-pairers, auto maintenance technicians or may pursue advanced training.

Automotive Services (EB) This program stresses the basic jobs, operations and skills needed in the servicing, diagnosis and repair of automobiles. Students will gain a thorough knowledge of tools, materials, and equipment used by auto mechanics. They will learn to use meters, diag-nostic equipment, and measuring instruments; learn to interpret sketches, schematics and diagrams; and use service manuals and other shop materials. Gradu-ates of the program are employed as dealer prepara-tion mechanics, brake specialists, tune-up mechanics, service mechanics and parts distributors.

Basic Business Technology (EB/PI) Clerical workers make up the largest single occupa-tional group in the United States. The Basic Business Technology program prepares students for entry level employment. Instruction includes keyboarding, office procedures, word processing, duplicating, and opera-tion of basic office machines. Graduates may pursue advanced training or find jobs as clerk typists, dupli-cating clerks, file clerks, receptionists, mail clerks, and general office workers.

Building Maintenance (PI) Maintenance technicians repair and maintain physical structures of commercial and industrial facilities. Instruction in this program includes basic plumbing, carpentry, electricity, masonry and small engine re-pair. Students also learn painting, rug cleaning, and installation of floor tiles and carpeting. Graduates work as carpenter's helpers, building maintenance technicians, sanitation technicians or custodians.

Building Services/Maintenance (EB) Students prepare for careers in the building services industry through the study of commercial cleaning, maintenance and grounds keeping operations. Stu-dents learn to use power and hand tools, apply mate-rials used in cleaning procedures, painting, spray buffing, machine polishing, and basic carpentry, elec-tricity, plumbing, small engine repair and landscaping skills. Graduates enter the labor force as sanitation technicians, custodians, landscapers, groundskeepers, carpenter's helpers, plumber's helpers or maintenance technicians.

Carpentry (EB/PI) Students who enroll in the Carpentry program learn the basics of home construction, planning, design, safety, and cost estimates. Hands-on train-ing in construction projects ranges from frame-work to detailed millwork. Graduates are qualified to enter jobs as home construction carpenters, fur-niture designers or may choose to pursue advanced training.

Culinary Arts: (EB/PI) This course develops skills in the culinary arts and prepares students for the many occupations availa-ble in the restaurant industry. Instruction empha-sizes understanding essential cooking techniques, which can then be adapted to create innovative new food items. Instruction also includes food sanitation, nutrition and use of equipment. In a simulated restaurant, students prepare and execute a daily lunch menu and learn front and back opera-tions in a restaurant. Employment opportunities range from sous chef, working chef, pantry work-er, garde manger, pastry assistant, kitchen sanita-tion worker. Post secondary opportunities are available in various culinary schools and colleges.

Dry Cleaning (EB) In a simulated storefront dry cleaning laboratory, students work on customers' garments and study under real working conditions. The student is in-structed in fabrics, dyes, chemicals, solvents, the dry cleaning process, spotting, operating finishing equipment, and dry cleaning procedures. Students learn the operation of cleaning machines, counter procedures, quality control, and management skills and inventory control. Graduates work as dry cleaners, laundry workers, pressers, front counter clerks, sales clerks, inspectors, assemblers, or pur-sue advanced training.

Health Services (EB) A program that prepares individuals, under the super-vision of physicians, to provide medical office ad-ministrative services and perform clinical duties in-cluding patient intake and care, routine diagnostic and recording procedures, pre-examination and ex-amination assistance, and the administration of medi-cations and first aid. Includes instruction in basic anatomy and physiology; medical terminology; medi-cal law and ethics; patient psychology and communi-cations; medical office procedures; and clinical diag-nostic, examination, testing, and treatment proce-dures.

Heating, Ventilation & Air Conditioning (EB) This course provides instruction in the three major areas of environmental controls: Heating furnace or hot air heating; Ventilation duct work, sheet metal, and fans; and air conditioning condensing units, coils and refrigerant. Study includes heat transfer, airflow, electrical wiring, conduit and furnace installation, sheet metal sizing, fabrication, and installation of air handlers and condensing units. Graduates enter domestic, commercial or industrial employment as technicians, installers, sales engineers, testers, or pursue advanced train-ing.

Supermarket Careers (PI) The supermarket career program is designed to enable students to gain skills, which lead to em-ployment in supermarkets or retail stores. The course provides instruction in safety, communica-tions, store front operations, cashier, produce, gro-cery, dairy, frozen foods and human relations. Em-ployment opportunities for graduates include mate-rial handlers, stock/inventory clerks, shipping, receiving, damage clerks, maintenance, checkers, cashiers, managers or entrepreneurs.

Employment Orientation (ACA/W)-This program is designed as an 18-week, half-day, shared-time, career diagnostic program open to special Educa-tion students in the eighth grade. Students explore three major career clusters: Food and Health Tech-nology, Construction Technology, and Digital Me-dia Technology. The goals of the program are to train and to enable each student to develop ac-ceptable work habits and attitudes, explore trade areas, determine their career interests and abilities, and to develop a 10-year career plan

At Middlesex County Vocational and Technical Schools, apprentices attend Related Technical Instruction classes two to three evenings per week from September through June.
