IN THIS ISSUE:

A mini-revolution is brewing in Tennis worldwide. In Can-ada, the approach is called "Progressive Tennis”. In the United States, the approach is called "QuickStart" Tennis. Regardless of the name, it is imported from European coun-tries like Belgium where it was used to successfully develop players like Justine Henin and Kim Clisters. In Switzerland, Roger Federer promotes the approach. In Brazil, Guga Kuerten is the spokesperson. In the United States, Andre Agassi and Steffi Graff have just been announced as spokespersons. As you've surely heard by now, QuickStart Tennis uses a systematic progression of court sizes, balls, and racquets, to scale the game down to an appropriate level for 5-10 year olds.

Simply put, learning tennis is more effective with this pro-gressional, systematic approach.

STAGE 3 - Red Ball (ages 4-8 and Adult Begin-ners). An oversized, high-density foam ball or felt ball that flies slower and bounces lower so it is eas-ier to visually track, receive and control.

STAGE 2 - Orange Ball (ages 7-9). Low compres-sion balls that are approximately 50% slower than a normal tennis ball. The ratio of length to width of the modified court is basically the same as a full sized court to an adult. This allows for development of an all-court game style with net play, and the low-compression balls facilitate tactical development as well as the development of good biomechanics.

STAGE 1 - Green Dot Ball (ages 9-10). The final step in the progression is to move 9-10 year olds to the full court with regulation rules and scoring. Transi-tional balls that fly slower and bounce lower (25% less compression) are used to enhance consistency and control.

The power of the QuickStart Tennis Format is that it allows players to play quickly and successfully. The quicker and

more skillfully a player can play, the more fun it is. No need to ‘dress it up’ with trivial activities. Each stage not only has spe-cific equipment to aid Success, but develop particular skills as well.

Proponents of the progressional approach to tennis will tell you that no 10 & under player (unless exceptionally gifted) should play on a regular court with regular balls.

Consequently, competition in tennis must mirror this progres-sional approach. Thus, USTA National has mandated that all 10 & Under Sanctioned Tournaments for 2012 be played using the QuickStart Format. In the Midwest Section, we are leading the charge by making these changes effective start-ing January 2011.

10 & Under DIVISION: Our District Level 1-5 Tournaments for The 10s division must use a “green dot” ball on a 78-foot court (regulation size court and net) and will play 2 out of 3 sets with a tiebreak in lieu of a third set. 8 & Under DIVISION: Using the “red stage” ball, these tournaments are designed specifically for the 8 & Under player and will hold a District Level 4 Points Per Round value. These tournaments will be round-robin events using a 36-foot court, portable net (2’9”) and will play 2 out of 3, 7-point tie-break sets. NEW RULES for All USTA Sanctioned Junior Tournaments:

3-Minute Rest Period Before a Match Tiebreak

When a Match Tiebreak is played in lieu of the third set, players will receive a 3-minute rest period after splitting sets. During the 3-minute rest period, a player may receive coaching.

Players should adhere to the following procedures prior to the match tiebreak after splitting sets:

• Players must notify the roving umpire if they have split sets (raise racquets at the net) prior to leaving the court area. • During the 3-minute rest period, coaching is allowed. It is preferred that coaching occurs just off court to prevent non-court shoes from the court surface and to prevent distractions to other play-ers. • If a player requires a bathroom break prior to the match tiebreak, the player must inform the roving umpire before leaving the court area for the 3-minute rest period. Reasonable time is allowed for the bathroom break. • Coaching is allowed during the bathroom break. If one player takes a bathroom break and the

other does not, coaching is allowed for both players for the duration of the bathroom break.

Should a player return late from the 3-minute rest period, the player will be penalized according to the Lateness Rule (FAC Comment III.D-4). The penalty for lateness shall be assessed as a “Game” penalty and the match is over. The match will be over because the tiebreak is considered a game played in lieu of the 3rd set. The score for the tiebreak will be recorded as “1-0”.

Mandatory 10-minute Rest Period Before Third Full Set (including 18 year olds) If the players split sets in a best-of-3-set match, there will be a mandatory 10-minute rest period after the 2nd set for ALL age groups (previously, this rule did not apply to the 18 & Under Division).

Southeastern Michigan Doubles Rankings A player’s final doubles ranking will be based on the best three (3) tourna-ments, played and completed, in the age division being calculated. A player must have earned a minimum of 8 points in an age division in order to be included in the Southeast Michigan District Final Doubles Rankings.

PLEASE NOTE: Be aware that tournament levels and point values are different at the Sectional level (i.e. a District Level 1 Tournament [Muthig Qualifier] is a Midwest Section Level 4 Tournament). Refer to the Midwest Section’s website for sectional Points Per Round information: www.midwest.usta.com.

Southeast Michigan Singles Ranking A player must play and complete the Southeast Michigan Muthig District Qualifier or two Southeast Michigan District sanctioned tournaments in order to be considered for a final year-end District Ranking. A player’s final ranking will be based on the best 6 tournaments. A player must have earned a mini-mum of 32 points in an age division in order to be included in the Southeast Michigan District Final Rankings (eligibility requirements must be met). Standing List: A standing list is a tentative strength listing of players includ-ing match results from the previous 12 months. A player must earn 8 points in an age division in order to appear on the Southeastern Michigan Standing List. A player’s best 6 tournaments will be used. Matches played in a player’s actual age division as well as any higher age division(s) will be included in the calculation of the Standings.

*NEW LEVEL 5 (Points Per Round) TOURNAMENTS: Southeast Michigan will be instituting a New Level 5 Tournament. These tournaments will be available for all age divisions, will run with a regular draw format (first match losers consolation) and have the same entry fees as District Level 4 Tournaments; however, players with 100 points or more on the most current Midwest Standing List will be ineligible for these events. These District Level 5 Tournaments, will have a Midwest Level 7 Points Per Round value as well (a newly created level for the Midwest Section). Look for these new tournaments on TennisLink at www.usta.com.

The Jean and Jerry Hoxie Memorial Award is given to a young male and female tennis player in South-east Michigan who has made a great contribution to the game of tennis through their good sportsmanship and achievements both on and off the tennis court. 2010 Female Hoxie Award Recipient: KELSEY DIETERS

Kelsey is a senior at Rochester High School where she has played on the Varsity Tennis Team since her Sophomore year. Named a Division 1 All-State and All-State Academic in all three years, she was voted Team MVP in 2009 and 2010, and has been the Team Captain for the past two sea-sons. In 2008 and 2010, she was a Division 1 State Semifi-nalist at #1 singles; and in 2009, racked up a remarkable 26-0 re-cord (never dropping a set) on her way to capturing the State Championship title. With an equally impressive record in USTA Tournament Play, Kelsey has held the top position in Southeast Michigan for the last three years and currently holds the #2 posi-tion in the Midwest, duplicating her highest ranking from 2009. Along with this high level of play, also comes great sportsmanship. Kelsey has won numer-ous sportsmanship awards throughout local and sec-tional play.

With a 3.94 GPA, Kelsey is a member of Rochester High’s National Honor Society. She has served on the Student Council since her Sophomore year, and the Student Council Executive Board since she was a Jun-ior. She has earned numerous departmental honor awards, been nominated into Rochester High School’s leadership group and the National Youth Leadership Foundation. Kelsey volunteers at a variety of school and community events, and also volunteers her time to help introduce youth to the sport of tennis.

Once an avid dancer (she won a National Dance Com-petition at the age of 10), Kelsey eventually had to choose between dance and tennis. During her time away from tennis, Kelsey enjoys crafts, music, movies and spending time with friends.

Kelsey will be attending Ohio State University in the Fall, where she plans to make an impact on the tennis team while pursuing a degree in Pharmacy.

Award was presented by Kelsey’s coach, Dan Goldberg.

2010 Male Hoxie Award Recipient: JOSEPH DUBE

Joseph attends Detroit Catholic Central High School, where he has been a member of the Var-sity Tennis Team since his Freshman year. He has been All-State, All-Catholic and All-Regional in every one of those years. Ending his freshman year as the State Champion in #2 singles, he moved up to the #1 singles position where he has finished his remaining years as State Runner Up with a com-manding 131-8 career record. As co-captain in his senior year, he helped his team capture the State Title and was just voted “Mr. Ten-nis” by the Michigan State High School Tennis Coaches Association. His accomplishments in USTA Tournament play have been equally impres-sive. Boys 16s Champion at our Jr. Qualifier in 2008 and 2009, he was ranked #1 in Southeast Michigan and as high as #4 in the Midwest.

Joseph displays exemplary conduct and character both on and off the court, and has numerous sports-manship awards from local and Midwest events.

With a 3.99 GPA, Joseph is on the Honor Roll and is a member of the Gabriel Richard Club. His commu-nity service includes volunteer work at Marycrest Manor, St. Genevieve Parish and the Livonia Family Y where he assists with young players learning our sport.

Joseph lives in Livonia with his parents and younger brother Michael (an accomplished tennis player him-self). He will attend Marist College in New York in the fall, where he will play on the collegiate tennis team while pursuing his degree.

Award was presented by Joe’s high school coach, Joe Stafford. DARLEE TOWLER AWARD

The Darlee Towler Memorial Award is given to a USTA League player in the Southeast Michigan District who best reflects the qualities that Darlee exhibited as a captain, player and supporter of the USTA League program: honesty, sincerity, loyalty, good sportsmanship and leadership with a commit-ment to growing tennis.

A true ambassador for the USTA League program, Darlee Towler used the USTA leagues not only to compete, but also to build friendships that went well beyond tennis. Darlee was diagnosed with cancer in December of 2007 and passed away in late 2008.

2010 Towler Memorial Award Recipient: USTA League Captain, JOE ARSENAULT

Joe enjoyed Track and Cross Country in high school, but it wasn't until 2002 that he became inter-ested in league tennis. A local tennis professional introduced Joe to the USTA, and he has been hooked ever since.

After his first year of playing in a league, his team captain chose not to run the team, so Joe be-came a team captain. Through the years, Joe has played on and captained many teams, including 3.0, 3.5, 4.0 Men's, 6.0 and 7.0 Mixed Doubles, 6.5 and 7.5 Men's Combo, and the new 3.5 singles format in-troduced this fall.

He is always looking to recruit new players into the USTA and en-joys making new tennis friends. Joe now plays ten-nis year round and finds the team camaraderie and competition to be very rewarding.

By trade, Joe is a semi-retired electrical engineer who has worked in Instrumentation, Flight Test, and Ground Vehicle Electronics. Originally from Con-necticut (where the rest of his family still resides), Joe lived in both California and Florida before mov-ing to Michigan in the 1990s.

When he’s not playing tennis, Joe enjoys the outdoor life—especially hunting and fishing. He currently lives in Lake Orion, with his wife of 13 years, Connie, who is also an avid tennis player and USTA League Captain in her own right. 2010 Kaspers’ Scholarship Recipients: MARISSA CLOUTIER

Marissa started playing tennis at a very young age and began competing in tournaments at age twelve. She played #1 singles for 4 years at Grosse Ile High School and has earned numerous awards, both for her play and her sportsmanship along the way. Her achievements have landed her a spot in the Grosse Ile High School Sports Hall of Fame.

She has been an instructor/coach not only for nu-merous tennis students, but for hockey, soccer and basketball as well. This is a result of a personal philosophy to promote healthy activities for children,

She is a dedicated scholar athlete graduating from high school with a 3.88 GPA and is in her first semester at Albion College where she is studying Economics and History with a pre-law focus. PATRICK COLE

Patrick is a well-rounded young man. His tennis accomplish-ments are numerous. Every-thing from Top Catholic League Scholar Athlete for Tennis his senior year in high school to several USTA tournament championships. He served as captain of the University of De-troit Jesuit High School team for two years and helped the team
