HANGER FLYING Jacob and Joey are going to the Academy!

This is the reason we all work so hard at the

fly in's to be able to send these young avia-

tors to Oshkosh.

Brian

If you are planning on attending the Sun-n-

Fun show please let Larry Jacobi know.

We have Judy Birchler scheduled for the

April meeting . Judy flies this yellow Rans

and brings her husband to all our fly-ins.

She has worked hard over the past few

years bringing more lady members into

flying conventional gear airplanes.

Several of the Chapter 67 members attended the Executive Airport Hanger Hawks semi-

nar on February 9th. The featured speakers were JC Buelher, Bob Duncan, Mitch Drum-

mond, all are Designated Flight Examiners from the Indianapolis FSDO. Each one covered topics on practical tests for Sport Pilot, Private Pilot, Commercial, Instrument and Flight Instructor followed by a question and answer session. In addition one of the Hawk members presented information on using the Apple i-Pad with Foreflight software. There were over 100 local pilots in attendance.

NOTE: Larry Jacobi just had another tri-axle load of stone put down behind the Hang-

ers. THANKS LARRY!!!

ELECTRONIC FLIGHT BAG PART II

During the January meeting the membership began a discussion of “electronic flight bags”.

We learned the members are using a number of different tablets and several different software

programs. It was agreed since this was such a personal and complex subject we would inter-

view several members and learn about their experiences going “paperless” in the cockpit.

We decided to start this series with our Chapter 67 President, Brian Crull. As most of you

know Brian is a professional corporate pilot and owns a corporate flight management com-

pany. In addition to his business Brian owns an RV3 Experimental and a restored 1947 Piper

PA-12 Super Cruiser. He has flown a vast number of different aircraft during his career and

has instructed, flown charter, airline and corporate. Brian has flown all over the U.S., Canada,

Mexico and some in Europe.

We asked him why he purchased his first i-Pad Tablet?

Brian said he saw another corporate pilot with one during a stopover about three years ago. He

asked to look at it and quickly saw how it would help with his flight planning and as a backup

set of charts and approach plates for the Cessna Citations he flies. The aircraft Brian flies al-

ready had subscriptions to Jepp. Charts, XM Weather and the ability to present them on the

panel but he also had to carry printed binders as backup. He quickly bought an i-Pad and be-

gan using it for a backup.

Today Brian uses his i-Pad for flight planning as well as a backup set of charts. We recently

watched as he sat in an FBO, checked weather, planned a route, and filed an IFR flight plan in

just a few minutes on his i-Pad. He has X-M weather in the cockpit to help with weather and

likes ForeFlight for planning. Brian filed the flight plan using Flight Plan.com. He keeps his

weather information for the trip in ForeFlight and has his i-Pad readily accessible during the

flight.

Here are some of the applications Brian keeps on his i-Pad… AOPA FLY-Q, JEPP FD,

FOREFLIGHT.COM, FLTPLAN.COM, FBO LOCATOR, GARMIN, TAFs METARS. He

also keeps his e-mail and photos on it. Brian uses Face Book and e-mail to keep track of

friends while traveling. He said he has continued to add applications over the past three years.

We asked Brian what he uses for his VFR flying in the Super Cruiser and RV3? Brian said he

has an up to date Garmin 510 in the PA-12 and it has XM Weather. He can transfer the 510 to

the RV or use an older Garmin GPS 3 he keeps in it.

The Apple i-Pad has certainly helped Brian keep his “flight bag” to a reasonable weight but

equally important helps with flight planning and communication.

It is that time of year when we unplug the battery tender, pre-heater and pull the plane out for a

quick flight. A charged batter and preheating are very important and preflight checking carefully

may be uncomfortable but is imperative. Here is an article I found wit some good ideas about

starting.

FROM MIDWEST FLYER MAGAZINE:

January 22, 2013 by Janice Wood

As part of our Aviation Innovations, Todd Petersen from Petersen Aviation Inc., sent along this

idea: “Sometimes when trying to start an airplane in cold weather, the engine will die immediately

after starting as you try to give it a little throttle to keep it running. The way to cure this is to do eve-

rything to start it as you normally would — one or two shots of prime, a couple of strokes on the

throttle, crack the throttle, then start the engine.

However, after normal priming, pull the primer out again to fill it with fuel and leave it that way,

then when the engine initially starts, keep it running by slowly advancing the primer until it is

empty, then lock it. By the time you get the primer all the way in, the engine will take the throttle. It

works every time. However it’s critical that the pilot remembers to lock the primer in the closed po-

sition once done.”

“In warmer weather the engine sometimes wants to ‘diesel’ on shutdown,” he continued. “The cure

for this is to simply give it full throttle after going full lean with the mixture and placing the fuel se-

lector in the OFF position. That works every time too.”

PRESIDENT’S CORNER: Count down to Spring! I am sure you are as ready for spring to get here as much as I am. This winter has not been

the best for flying. I guess we got spoiled from last winter.

We are hoping to organize from Chapter Fly Outs this year. The few that we have been able to do have been a lot

of fun. If you have any ideas of places we can organize a Saturday or Sunday fly out, please let me know. Also I

would be interested in how many would be interested in participating in the fly outs either as a passenger or flying

your plane.

We have been having a good turn out this winter at the monthly meetings. We will resume the monthly pitch in

dinner before the meetings in April. For March we will once again meet at McAllisters Deli. We still have a few

months open for members to volunteer to help with the monthly pitch in dinner. If you are interested in helping

out let me know.

I know our June Pancake Breakfast Fly In seems like a long time away but it will be here before we know it. We will

once again have a presence at the Tom Wood Aviation Open House on June 1. We should once again expect a

large turn out for our June 8 Fly In like we had last year. We think the large turn out was a result of our being at

the Tom Wood Open house the week before. Being at their Open House is yet another way that we as a Chapter

can promote our Chapter and also aviation to the general public.

Do you ever see a new face at the meetings? Even if you are not sure if they are a member or a Visitor, lets make

sure we welcome them. We never want to see someone leave without us welcoming them and making them want

to be a part of our Chapter.

For those of you that were not at the February meeting or have not heard the word, our Vice President, Mike Hay-

den found out in January that he has advanced esophageal cancer. At the February meeting Nick Boland sent him

a picture of the Chapter members waving Hi and wishing him good luck. The best way to send your words of en-

couragement is to Text him. With his treatments he will not be having too many visitors.

I hope to see many of you at the next meeting on March 4th.

Brian

I have an Eclipse USB flight simulator yoke that is gently

used that I would like to sell for $150. It has spent the

last year in storage due to lack of space to set up my

desktop PC, and I would feel better about it being in the

hands of someone that is going to get more use out of

it. It works very well and I had a lot of fun with it, but only

got to use it a few times. If anyone would like to contact

me about it, my number is 6143237456 and email is
