ANAHEIM ACHIEVESWhen the school bell rings, the Y gives parents peace of mind during the work day by keeping kids safe and our community safe. Thanks to the Anaheim Achieves after school program, students are taking a greater interest in learning and making smarter life choices after school.

The Y received the 2016 Distinguished After School Health (DASH) Recognition Program certificate, which recognizes programs that excel in providing health education, nutrition and physical activities for students. The Anaheim Family YMCA is proud to have 15 of its Anaheim Achieves school sitesrecognized for this honor.

EDUCATION & LEADERSHIPCARING & LEARNING WITH MEA program for parents, grandparents and all child caregivers.

Parents and family/friend caregivers are truly children’s “first educators.” Today more than ever, working parents are depending on their spouse, parents, friends or other family members to care for their children. This is why the Y has introduced the Early Learning Readiness (ELR) program. ELR provides all caregivers the experiences and the knowledge necessary to ensure children arrive at the steps of kindergarten ready to learn. For more information contact: Ann Trovada, Program Director at [email protected].

“My daughter Kylee and I have been a part of the Y family for two years now and it has been amazing. Kylee started playing basketball at the age of 3 and has also been a part of the Ballet, Hip Hop and Gymnastics programs. We feel so lucky to have a great coach, and have had some awesome instructors. Not only have we become great friends with Coach Alexis and the Y staff, but we have also made great friendships with the parents and kids who are in the programs, who have become like family. Kylee has improved in the sport, thanks to the dedication the coach and staff make as they are all so involved. I am also given the opportunity to be a part of my daughter’s growth in basketball as they let me volunteer and help with practices and games. It has been an amazing two years and we hope to be a part of this family for a very long time.”

Thank you to González Reynoso Family Foundation for your generous donation to give kids the opportunity, like Kylee, to be part of our youth sports programs where they model the YMCA character values and interact with positive role models.

Thank You González Reynoso Family Foundation

FOR A HEALTHY COMMUNITYHEAL: Healthy Eating Active LivingOver the last 6 months, the Anaheim YMCA has partnered with Latino Health Access, through the HEAL Zone Collaborative, to anchor a HEAL resident leadership program called “Cafecito HEAL” at both Lincoln and Edison Elementary Schools. There are more than 30 active residents who have been building relationships, exploring the assets and issues in their neighborhoods, and prioritizing HEAL strategies they would like to work on. LHA has also provided a variety of health and wellness support to the residents based on their requests, including nutrition and exercise classes, emotional wellness workshops and support groups. This has been critical to building a rapport with residents and retaining their participation, including local resident Edith Marillon, a HEAL Zone champion parent and resident advocate, who has been active at Edison School.

“I have participated in a support group of 14 to 19 mothers, who attend a class each Thursday morning at Edison School, in the HEAL Zone. Through these classes and workshops, residents began preparing to be leaders in and out of school, which I feel comes with great responsibility, since we have developed some great services for our school and community. Through this work, we have been able to support the school as volunteers through various school events, like Safe Routes to School or through the active recess program, Padres en Acción. What I've supported is having workshops and educational courses in nutrition for good health and a healthy life, encouraging mothers to eat more nutritious and healthy, and encouraging them to put more fruits and vegetables on the table.”

“Something else that has motivated me is to attend HEAL meetings, where I could meet other people who take part in the program. Something else that has been achieved in our group is coexistence and the support of each of the participant in the class. Being part of Zumba and the group exercise classes in the mornings has also been very important for our overall health. This large group of residents and moms is still growing and supporting each other with enthusiasm and much energy. Finally, a very pleasant experience was being able to attend the Vision y Compromíso Conference in the City of Ontario, with other moms and strong residents. Overall, my experience has been knowing that we can always do and give more to our families and community.”
