Micksburg Pioneer Church

Advent II Christmas Service

Advent II was held in the Micksburg Pioneer Church on Sunday, December 4. Our visitors listened to carols sung by the choir from Zion Evangelical United Church and to lessons and prayers read by several members of our local clergy. The atmosphere was festive, happy and peaceful as the

congregation participated in this special Christmas service.

Rev. Robert Spurrell welcomed the guests and Pastor Orlen Lapp, Rev. Marybeth Wilson, Msgr. Douglas Bridge, Rev. Dr. Daniel Hansen, Rev. Denise Spurrell, Rev. Tim Parent and Janet Campbell assisted with the lessons and prayers.

The Pembroke Salvation Army received a generous gift from the congregation and two donations were made to the Micksburg Pioneer Church as well. Thanks go to Janet Campbell, Larry Fisher, Wayne Woods and Mark Moss for the organization and preparation needed to make the Christmas service in the Micksburg Pioneer Church such a wonderful seasonal event.

Special Day! Special Celebration!

Angela Siebarth tied the marital knot with long-time beau, Adam Freeman on Saturday, February 18 in the Micksburg Pioneer Church. Our curator was beautiful in her white strapless gown and white faux fur jacket while Adam looked very dapper in his dark shirt and dark suit combination. The reception was held at the Best Western Pembroke Inn and there was a very large group of family and friends on hand

to wish the newly married couple a lot of happiness in their new life together. As I am writing this newsletter, Angela and Adam are honeymooning in Cuba. I am looking forward to seeing more photos and hearing more details about this special day. Congratulations!

Welcome to

Heritage Day

By Heritage Pembroke

February 18, 2012

Almost 300 visitors explored our local heritage on Saturday, February 18 at Calvin United Church. Informative exhibits were put on by the Champlain Trail

Museum & Pioneer Village, Calvin United Church Archives and Murals, Murray L. Moore Hydro Museum, Royal Canadian Legion, 42nd Field Regiment (Lanark and Renfrew Scottish) RCA Regimental Museum, and the Upper Ottawa Valley Genealogical Group. Steve Handke had a model railroad and railway memorabilia on display; Heather Graham-Smith

and Ted Beal showcased family genealogy; and the Renfrew County Museum Network had information available on the various museums in the county. Heather Pearson put together a very interesting display on the British Royal Family in honour of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee this year and Bob Clauson put Pembroke’s historical

photos out again for viewing. Our display showcased our exhibits, events, Kids Days and volunteers. We also included our popular “What is It” contest. Congratulations to Bob Hackett who has won a family membership to the Museum for having the most correct answers for the items on display.

Doug Fee officially welcomed our visitors to this Heritage Day Event and Rev. Marybeth Wilson extended greetings on behalf of Calvin United Church. Deputy Mayor Ron Gervais

brought greetings from the City of Pembroke. Glenn Pearson and David Whitmore arranged for refreshments to be on hand. Visitors leisurely examined the various exhibits and they showed a good deal of interest by asking questions. It was a very good day!

Fire Station No. 3 The “alarm” has been sounded! The 1923 Bickle fire engine is ready to roll out of its new home, Fire Station No. 3. Bill Clayton, Jim Clayton and David Whitmore have teamed up again to build a wonderful exhibit space in the Museum for the beautifully re-stored antique fire engine.

Steve Sipocz was able to arrange a paint and primer donation for this exhibit. Excellent firefighting artifacts have been donated or loaned by Bill Clayton, John Hubert, Kevin Cliche, Steve Handke, Ron Millar, Tom Stephenson, John Yeas and David Whitmore. Bob Clauson and Sylvia Whitmore have helped with displaying old and new photographs. Improvements are still in the works; for example, the old hose reel will be refurbished soon. The Grand Opening of this new exhibit will take place during our Sneak-a-Peek Wine and Cheese Fundraising Gala so come out and enjoy a “three alarm” evening!

Other Improvements

This winter, work has been done in the Artifact Storage Area upstairs to improve the office area so that Angela and the collections assistant can work more efficiently up there. Additional lighting has been installed and Alex Siebarth has been helpful in moving furniture around.

Also, a new high efficiency security light has been I installed outside on the Micksburg Pioneer Church.

Thank You!

Our Kids Days program will be getting off to a good start again this summer with regard to supplies for the various activities thanks to a very generous donation from The Knights of Columbus. The Alice and Fraser

Minor Sports Association, The Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 72, the Kiwanis Club of Pembroke and the 42nd Field Regiment also support our Kids Days Program.

Farewell to a Special Lady

Annie Fullerton, a master dressmaker, passed away December 10, 2011. She volunteered over 2000 hours at the Museum repairing many of our Victorian dresses similar to the one shown here in our Victorian Wedding Exhibit.

Thank you, Annie

Membership Renewal Time!

YOU, our OVHS members and patrons are the key to our success as a museum in that you support the Champlain Trail Museum and Pioneer Village through your membership fees, your attendance at our

fundraising events, your volunteerism and your belief that our history and heritage are worth preserving and sharing with the generations to come. Enclosed with this newsletter is a membership form and a Patron Program brochure for those of you who renew annually. Our list of patrons gets a little longer each year as evident on the first page of this newsletter. Also, please note the list of Corporate and Community Partners. The Board of Directors appreciates the support of all members and encourage you to renew in order to be a part of this busy and dynamic Museum. Your newsletter envelope includes your invitation to our Sneak-a-Peek Fundraising Wine and Cheese Gala being held Friday, April 20. The admission price again this year is $10 for members and $15 for non-members. Our featured event will be the grand opening of Fire Station No. 3 and our featured artist will be Linda Phannenhour, a talented local artist. There will be several new exhibits for you to check out and a silent auction. If you, as a business or individual, would like to make a donation to the auction, please call Angela at the Museum.

A Note to our OVHS Members

We are planning to have a special members evening again this year, possibly in May. Please come out and have a good time meeting our guest speaker and enjoying some refreshments. This type of evening is free to our members as it is our way of saying “Thank You” for your support.

Our Annual General Meeting is being held on Thursday, March 22 at the Kiwanis Field House at Riverside Park. The meeting starts at 7:00 p.m. The purpose of this meeting is to keep our members informed as to what is happening at the Museum and to elect the Board of Directors. Also, there will be a guest presentation. As OVHS

members you have a stake in the success of the

Champlain Trail Museum & Pioneer Village so

please come out to this very important meeting.
