A MESSAGE FROM THE MINISTER FOR HIGHER EDUCATION AND SKILLSWelcome to the CAE 2014 Winter Guide.

The Victorian Coalition Government is committed to a world class vocational education and training sector, which provides access to quality educational opportunities.

The Government is investing $1.2 billion per year over four years to ensure training meets the needs of industry and employers.

Our infrastructure agenda alone will create thousands of jobs, and it is crucial that training provided now meets the needs of tomorrow’s economy.

The Government understands that students including those at CAE need to be given the best chance of securing a meaningful and long term job.

The Learn Local adult community education sector is an important provider of training and a crucial part of the preparation and delivery of a skilled workforce for the state.

As one of the state’s largest adult education providers, CAE has extensive experience in delivering quality education services to Melbourne’s adult learners, offering a wide range of short courses, general education and vocational learning opportunities.

The Hon Nick Wakeling MPMinister for Higher Education and Skills

A MESSAGE FROM JOE PIPER While the clouds are rolling across the Melbourne skyline, CAE has a banquet of winter warmers ready to make the colder months brighter. While some may think of hibernation, we keep things vibrant and engaged – learning and growing is a year-round endeavour at CAE – delivering the best experiences to Melbournian’s, rain, hail or shine.

As one of Victoria’s largest adult learning providers, we are proud to offer courses that capture not only the needs but the imaginations of a broad spectrum of individuals. Our welcoming and supportive environment means you walk away with a new experience, new skills and maybe even a new friend or two.

Colour the cold weather and start a craft project. An Introduction to Patchwork (p6) is a fantastic opportunity to learn how to make a unique and beautiful quilt-top and enjoy an indoors project of your own. Step out with one of our many walking tours, including Subterranean Melbourne (p15), where you will explore publicly accessible sites in the CBD, associated with lost, hidden and secret tunnels, bunkers, caves, vaults and more.

Take a cooking course and then, with your know-how, throw a dinner party for a night in with friends. Some of the exciting new cooking courses include; Classic European Winter Cuisine, Winter Soups: From Classic to Exotic, Pasta & Gnocchi: Classic Italian Cooking: For Beginners, All About Tarts: Sweet & Savoury, Chocolate Desserts: Decadent Delights (pp8-11).

So don’t get stuck on the couch this winter – there is too much fun to be had, things to do and see, languages to learn and skills to gain.

Joe Piper Interim CEO, Centre for Adult Education & Box Hill Institute
