WM7 THE ARAB SPRING AND THE CLASH OF CIVILIZATIONS NEW Thomas O. Hecht, Ph.D.

The Arab Spring which started in Tunisia and Egypt in 2010, has evolved on a path that has caused thousands of innocents to die in Syria alone — so far 80,000 have been killed by President Assad and his accomplices. Also the Arab Spring has not diminished what Professor Bernard Lewis called the “Clash of Civilizations”, the threat to the Judeo-Christian way of life, respecting freedom and human rights as we know it. The threat is Jihadist Islam which considers the United States the Big Satan and Israel the Little Satan — where will it lead? Dr. Thomas O. Hecht is founder and chairman of the Begin-Sadat Center for Strategic Studies at Bar-Ilan University, Ramat-Gan, Israel. He also founded the Maimonides Lodge of B’nai Brith and was awarded the coveted Herzl Prize for dedicated public service on behalf of the State of Israel. Recently he received the Guardian of Israel Award from the Al Katz Center of Sarasota.. He has lectured at several North American universities on international relations, political philosophy and comparative government.

MONDAY (CONT.)WM8 JEWISH ICONS NEW

Ralph WintrobOn March 31, 1926, New York witnessed one of the most stunning funerals in the city’s history to grieve over the loss of the Jewish community’s most revered stars, the actor-manager Jacob Adler, king of the Yiddish stage for over 30 years. The first lecture will recreate his thrilling and dramatic life based on his memoirs. In the second presentation, Mr. Wintrob will bring to light the mission of Emmanuel Ringelblum, the iconic scholar and archivist of the doomed Warsaw Ghetto, the biggest in Eastern Europe. Ringelblum was haunted by the question, “Who will write our history if we are all erased from the record in The Final Solution?” Ralph also teaches The Golden Thread on Fridays in February from 11-12:30, see page 31). Ralph Wintrob is a former journalist, teacher and teacher-librarian in his hometown Toronto, Canada. Since retiring, he has taught a variety of courses at the senior studies program (L.I.F.E Institute), Ryerson University, Toronto, in the areas of philosophy and literature. He recently taught his Hebrew short novels course at a Toronto synagogue. 11:00 am-12:30 pm Mondays Begins: 1/20 Ends: 1/27Two sessions Members $40 Non-Members $45

WM9 BURNING ISSUES IN THE SUPREME COURT Gerald J. Robinson.

Are drone killings of suspected American terrorists overseas constitutional? Does the right to free speech protect leakers of government secrets? Is affirma-tive action now dead, or merely nearly dead? Can Cher say “f…’em” about her critics on broadcast TV? Can the police force you to give a DNA sample if you’re arrested for speeding? The Supreme Court has the last word on our vital rights. Learn how cases get there and how the Court deals with them, including the gay marriage decision and other contentious issues like whether suspicious police can kick in your door without a warrant, whether flag burning is protected by free speech and whether sodomy is protected by privacy rules. This perennial favorite highlights current cases, so repeat students are welcome. Dissent and discussion are encouraged! Class size is limited, so please register early! Gerald (“Jack”) Robinson is an attorney and American history buff. He is a member of the Harvard American History Club and has taught several popular courses at The Education Center including American Imperialism. 11:00 am-12:30 pm Mondays Begins: 2/3 Ends: 2/10Two sessions Members $40 Non-Members $45

WM10 LITERATURE AND AGING NEW Phyllis Lieberman

Books capture as nothing else does the passage of time. What insights can lit-erature offer us as we navigate the “not young” part of our lives? Through short fiction, poetry, and essays we will explore together such issues as how the past affects how we view the present; what tasks are crucial to complete at this stage of life and how we make adjustments for changes in mental and/or physical ca-pacity in order to still have a productive, satisfying life. Please read and come prepared to discuss The Sense of an Ending by Julian Barnes for the first session. Phyllis Lieberman, MA, JD, is a professional book group and workshop facilita-tor, former English teacher, attorney and career consultant. 11:00 am-12:30 pm Mondays Begins: 2/3 Ends: 2/24Four sessions Members $75 Non-Members $85

WM15 HOLLYWOOD ICONS CONTINUES NEWGus Mollasis

Students will look at films that Gus has selected from Hollywood’s earliest days of the 1920’s up to the new millennium; proving that the one thing that makes an icon an icon is timelessness. Icons cement themselves not only in the footprints at Mann’s Chinese Theatre in Hollywood, but also in the hearts of movie fans for all time. Gus always picks new films to enjoy so his fans don’t see any repeats from previous years. He believes the topic of Holly Icons is inexhaustible and serves as a good core theme to continue with every year. Gus Mollasis, a professional movie maven, was host of “At The Movies,” a Sara-sota television show dedicated exclusively to the discussion of film for over nine years. From big stars to first time filmmakers, Gus loved to talk film with them all. The show also supported both major film festivals in town — The Cine-World Film Festival and the Sarasota Film Festival. Gus brings a passion and knowledge of movies that both a film buff and casual movie fan can enjoy. WT2 WHAT SHOULD JEWS BELIEVE? NEWRabbi Elaine Rose Glickman

Judaism is not a religion of catechism or extensive dogma; its only formal decla-ration, in fact, is faith in the Oneness of God. Why, then, did the great medieval sage Moses Maimonides formulate 13 essential principles that all Jews should believe? His vision of Jewish faith enlightens, inspires and challenges. What significance do the 13 principles hold for us? If we were to formulate 13 prin-ciples for Judaism today, what would they be? Employing ancient text, modern philosophy, and everything in between, the class will wrestle and engage with questions of Jewish faith and what Jews should believe. Rabbi Elaine Rose Glickman received her MA in Hebrew Letters and rabbinic ordi-nation from Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion. Her essays, sermons, and poetry are widely published including in the National Jewish Book Award win-ner “The Women’s Torah Commentary”. She has authored four books, the newest of which is The Messiah and the Jews: Three Thousand Years of Tradition, Belief and Hope. A parenting authority featured on the talk show Daytime, she blogs about Jewish parenting for the Jewish Journal and serves as a keynote speaker on parenting issues. 9:00-10:30 am Tuesdays Begins: 1/7 Ends: 1/28Four sessions Members $75 Non-Members $85

WT4 LET’S GO BIRDING ON LONGBOAT AND LIDO KEYSMichael Givant, Ph.D.

Longboat and Lido Keys have an eye-opening variety of birds. You will learn to ob-serve and identify these birds in their natural habitat. The first meeting will be held at the school. The next three weeks will be in the field (details will be given at the first class). Binoculars are a must and about a mile of pleasantly paced walking will likely be necessary for each trip. There will be an “optional” field trip to Robinson Preserve, an excellent birding sight in Northwest Bradenton on Tuesday, March 4th at 9 AM. This will likely entail 2 miles of easy walking. A brown bag lunch or snack is advisable. Cost and details for carpooling etc. will be arranged at the first class. Dr. Michael Givant is a retired sociology professor having taught at Adelphi University Long Island. He is an ardent birder and has birded across the mainland U.S., Alaska, Canada, Mexico, Costa Rica, Panama, The Galapagos Islands and Africa for the past 22 years. WT6 IMPRESSIONISM AND THE PAINTING OF MODERN LIFE NEWWarren Roberts, Ph.D.

French art had been dominated by the Academy, with art that was drawn from the historical past and done in an academic style until the 1870’s and 80’s when Manet, Monet, Renoir and other Impressionists, as they were called, wanted to portray their own world; putting art in a new direction, one that pointed toward modern art. The work of Impressionists prepared the way for Picasso, Braque and Cubism, changing the world of art forever. No group of artists has attracted more attention than the Impressionists; their work is as fresh and vibrant today as when it was produced; the stories of the artists are as wonderful as their paintings, which the two talks in this series will demonstrate. Dr. Warren Roberts received his BS, BA, MA and Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley. He has been teaching history at the University of Albany, NY, for 40 years, where he holds the title of Distinguished Professor. He is author of the book, Jacques Louis-David: Revolutionary Artist.11:00 am-12:30 pm Tuesdays Begins: 1/7 Ends: 1/14Two sessions Members $40 Non-Members $45

TUESDAY (CONT.)WT7 PLANETS, MOONS, ASTEROIDS AND COMETS NEW

James Livingston, Ph.D. This series will review the NASA discoveries of interplanetary probes to study the moons and planets in our solar system as well as the asteroid and comets. Part One will discuss NASA probes of the planets and their moons, including the demotion of Pluto from planetary status and the search for water and possible life on Mars. Part Two will deal with asteroids and comets, the smaller but poten-tially more dangerous bodies in our solar system (heads up!). Over a thousand people were injured last year when a small asteroid hit the earth in Siberia, and larger asteroids or comets have done more damage in the past, including one that caused the extinction of the dinosaurs. We’ll discuss probes of asteroids and comets, and what NASA and others are doing to protect us from extinction.

Dr. James Livingston has a Ph.D. in applied physics from Harvard. He was a research physicist for GE for over 30 years and then taught materials science at MIT for 20 years. He has presented lectures on space exploration to general audi-ences of all ages. He has also published a number of books on science and history.

There will be time to discuss and also ask questions as well as contribute your personal favorites.

Louise Bruderle has a BFA in art and art history from Villanova University and is trained as a painter who made a shift to publish. WT9 THE MEXICAN AVANT-GARDE — FEATURING NEW FRIDA KAHLO AND DIEGO RIVERA

Baila Miller Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera proved to be the ultimate “power couple” of the twentieth century. Their passion for art, politics and each other, fueled a life-long melodrama of expression. She became an international phenomenon as a female artist creating work in the realm of Surrealism. He, single-handedly, revived the laborious art form of fresco — a medium that had been forgotten for over three hundred years. In addition to Frida and Diego, attention will be given to the burst of the Mexican avant-garde movement in the 1920’s and such artists as David Alfaro Siqueiros and Jose Clemente Orozco.

Baila Miller, the founder of Miller Music & Fine Arts Programs, LLC, received her bach-elor’s and master’s degrees from Memphis State University. She currently lectures on all aspects of art: architecture, music, sculpture, painting and literature to Elderhostels, librar-ies, community centers and various continuing education programs in the Sarasota area.

TUESDAY (CONT.)WT10 FUN WITH HAMLET NEW

Kenneth Simons, Ph.D.Hamlet is among the most important plays in the Western Canon. The field of action in the play is the character’s interior life, which for Elizabethan audiences was a new and radically different conception of the hero and of the heroic. In many ways, Hamlet marks the birth of the “modern”. Students will view and compare several of the leading dramatic conceptions of the character, read and discuss central passages in the text, touch briefly on the theological issues relevant to Shakespeare’s audience and finally consider questions raised by psychoanalytic interpretations of the play. We are thrilled Ken is back! Dr. Kenneth Simons, a Columbia Ph.D. in English and comparative literature, taught writing and literature at Columbia University and Wisconsin and Adelphi Universities before joining the faculty of Syosset (NY) High School. He has published on Joseph Con-rad and other subjects and is listed in Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers (1996). 11:00 am-12:30 pm Tuesdays Begins: 1/7 Ends: 2/25Eight sessions Members $130 Non-Members $140

WEDNESDAY (CONT.)WW10 AMERICA AND THE WORLD IN 2014

Robert GarvinChina is growing back into the political giant it was in the 17th century. Arab and other Muslim states are trying to evolve into modern politics. African tribes cohere as national states. Pakistan teeters between poverty, political chaos, and nuclear weapons. These trouble spots affect the peace and stability of the United States. Self-interest leads us to try to control the problem to protect ourselves. Do we have a moral obligation when our interests are less directly affected? Can we in fact do any good? This year’s course will explore a balance between U.S. national objectives and means.

Robert Garvin was educated in Austria, England and the United States. After graduating from MIT, he worked for over 42 years for GE, where he was responsible for developing markets and trade policy issues with the U.S. government in many countries including China, the former Soviet Union, Belgium, Turkey, Germany, Italy, Britain, Israel, Japan and Korea. Mr. Garvin celebrates 13 years lecturing at The Education Center. His course is an institution in and of itself!

WW11 GAUGIN AND CEZANNE NEWJean Joseph Renoux

Two of France’s most progressive, most radical late 19th century Post-Im-pressionists, Paul Gaugin and Paul Cezanne, will be brought to life with their dramatic personal stories, breakaway artistic styles and unforgettable visions of the world. Scraping back layer after layer of civilized cliché, they sought to depict the inner experience, rejecting the constraints of Impressionism’s visual imagery. Gaugin’s bold use of color led to the Synthetist style of modern art. Cezanne, referred to as the “father of us all” by Matisse and Picasso, led the way to Cubism. Paintings will be analyzed and compared.

Jean Joseph Renoux has been presenting history and art history programs and lec-tures for over 25 years throughout the U.S. He also leads group excursions to Europe, particularly Prague and throughout France, to explore its art, architecture and history.

WW14 CARAVAGGIO & ARTEMISIA GENTILESCHI NEW Jean Joseph Renoux

Caravaggio (1571-1610) was the greatest and most influential painter of the Baroque style known for his gritty naturalism and dramatic lighting technique as well as his gritty escapades and dramatic temper! Artemisia Gentileschi is considered one of the most accomplished painters in the generation after Cara-vaggio — in an era when female painters were not easily accepted by the artistic community or patrons. She painted many pictures of strong and suffering women from myth and the Bible — victims, suicides, warriors — she was herself a rape victim, an event which long overshadowed her achievements as an artist. This two-part series promises to intrigue and educate you with the lives and works of two Baroque masters. Among those to be discussed are Paul Robeson, Billie Holiday, Pete Seeger, Joan Baez and Common. Stephen will play some memorable songs on his banjo. Dr. Stephen Richer has a BA and MA from McGill University and a Ph.D. in sociol-ogy from the Johns Hopkins University. He was head of the Sociology Department at Carleton University. Would you like to find the “true” you in your wardrobe? Are you interested in learning more about yourself, your habits and your thoughts by examining your closet with the help of an expert? Are you willing to let go of some of the things in your closet? If you answered “yes” to any of these questions then it is time for you to meet Rick Rowe, The Closet Whisperer. This is your chance to learn how to bring your “best” self out of the closet! Your discoveries may surprise you!

Rick Rowe has had a career in fashion merchandising that spans 40 years; starting in Pittsburgh, PA, and moving on to Palm Beach, Dallas, Chicago, and New York. Working for such brands as Saks Fifth Avenue, Valentino, Armani and Chanel, his passion is still focused on the customer; getting it right for her wardrobe and her knowledge of her individual style.

WR14 BEHIND THE (HEAD) LINES OF WORLD WAR II NEWGeorge Stassa, M.D.

What went on “behind the lines” had a significant impact on the course of WWII. The headlines were molded by activity of spies, women, and the home front. WWII had a profound effect on African Americans, their relationships, and future in the United States. We will explore the “other battlefields” of the World Conflict, and how the effect of these events helped determine the outcome of the war. Audio-visuals will be used to enhance the presentations. Students who attended George’s World War II course last year are invited to return to learn new information.

Dr. George Stassa obtained his BA from Columbia College and his MD from Co-lumbia University, College of Physicians And Surgeons. WR15 THE NOT CIVIL WAR — NEWGeorge Stassa, M.D.

Letters, interviews and speeches reflect the feelings of those who experienced the Civil War. Diaries, notebooks and articles record the experiences of the men and women involved in the war. Women changed their “place” during the conflict. Life was different in the North from the South for women, blacks and children. The journey from slavery to freedom was complicated, and letters and documents will reveal the impact on the African Americans first hand. During the war some fundamental precepts changed, and values were altered as the conflict progressed. We will gain insight into the spiritual and emotional tenor of the Civil War, as ex-pressed by those who lived it. Students who attended George’s Civil War course last season are encouraged to return for more information and discussion.
