TILX tank cars are used in food service to transport vegetable oil and other liquid ingredients. A number of these tank cars received the colorful Louisiana Hot Sauce logo - but they are not in fact filled with hot sauce, contrary to popular belief. Instead, they are exclusively used to transport vinegar, one of the key ingredients in hot sauce. Atlas’ model is a faithful recreation of the prototype and is ready to spice things up on your layout!

Atlas’ Research & Development Team does a fair share of railfanning before and after work and on their lunch breaks. During one of these outings Atlas’ CEO, Paul Graf, captured this ADMX tank car with unique and humorous Kung Fu fighter graffiti awaiting delivery to a local salad dressing factory in Hillside, NJ. Atlas’ model is a careful recreation of this unique prototype!

Atlas’ model is of the Trinity 25,500 gallon, insulated, general-purpose design tank car. This was introduced in 1986 and production continues today. There are at least 13,000 presently in service. Typical commodities include vegetable oil, tallow, styrene, benzene, asphalt, biodiesel, acrylates, and numerous other chemicals.

The increased volume of coiled steel transportation gave rise to a new purpose-built freight car. Previously rolls of coiled-steel had generally traveled in specially equipped gondola cars. In the 1960’s a lighter type of car emerged specifically for hauling coils of steel in an integral trough. The car type gained popularity and eventually over 17,000 cars were built. Atlas’ model replicates a 42’ design with a distinctive fishbelly side sill.

Built in the late 1980s by GE, the DASH 8-40B diesel locomotives were identified by their dynamic brake gear located along the roof line between the cab and engine compartment, with ventilation provided by large roof-top grilles. These four-axle, high horsepower engines are still in service today in North America.

By the early 1990s the North American Cab had begun to replace the “standard” cab on regular production GE 4 and 6-axle locomotives. The only order for 4-axle Dash 8-40Bs with this new cab came from Santa Fe, and thus the Dash 8-40BW model was unique to that road. A total of 83 units total were built and many are still in service today for BNSF.

In 1991 Amtrak, faced with a motive power shortage, turned to GE for an order of 20 Dash 8-32BWH locomotives. This unique model was basically a Dash 8-32B locomotive equipped with a North American Cab and built on the longer Dash 8-40BW frame. Some additional modifi-cations for passenger service were included. A total of 20 units were built and they are still in Amtrak service today.

Analog (DC) Operation FEATURES:• The LokSound Select Dual-Mode decoder allows your Atlas Gold Series locomotive to be used on DC as well as on DCC layouts.• Please note that the Atlas Quantum Engineer will NOT operate an Atlas Gold Series locomotive equipped with a LokSound Select decoder

on an analog (DC) layout. However, the sound and lighting functions of the LokSound Select decoder in the Atlas Gold Series DASH 8 locomotive can be controlled by an easy-to-use basic DCC system

The Dash 2 locomotive series, unveiled by EMD in 1972, featured significant changes, such as a solid-state, modular electrical control system and improved engine components designed to increase traction and reduce exhaust emissions. A reliable work-horse, the GP38-2 remains one of the most successful locomotives ever built. Most are still in service today.

In 1972, Berwick Forge & Fabricating, of Berwick, Pennsylvania began producing modern 50’ sliding door box cars which featured their new corrugated non-terminating “sine-wave” ends. Initially sold to over 35 railroads across the nation, these box cars were an unfortunate casualty of the economic recession of the late 1970’s and Berwick was forced to stop production in 1982. However, Berwick’s 50’ hauler found a place in railroad history through a strong second hand market that continues even today.

The ACF® 89’ 4” flat car was introduced in the late 60s as a result of a continuing need for more intermodal platform capacity. The Atlas model is based on the 1973 version that was originally designed to carry two trailers or combinations with containers. The cars have been used by Trailer Train and various railroads in intermodal service since that time. Many of these were modified in the late 80s to accept longer trailers. Most of those remaining in TTX service, today, have been modified with three hitches to accommodate up to three shorter package trailers.

TILX tank cars are used in food service to transport vegetable oil and other liquid ingredients. A number of these tank cars received the colorful Louisiana Hot Sauce logo - but they are not in fact filled with hot sauce, contrary to popular belief. Instead, they are exclusively used to transport vinegar, one of the key ingredients in hot sauce. Atlas’ model is a faithful recreation of the prototype and is ready to spice things up on your layout!

Pullman Standard’s 4750 cubic foot covered hopper was one of the most successful freight car designs in that company’s history. Over 54,000 of these cars were produced during the latter part of the 1970s and early 1980s. It was the premier grain hauler of the era and is still in use.

Found throughout the country on virtually all of the class 1 rail lines, it is also one of the most leased cars through the Transport Leasing Division of Pullman. The cars were painted a virtual rainbow of colors.
