WINTER 2018
Dear Friends,Thanksgiving is just behind us and the holidays are fast approaching. This has been a
fantastic year at Winding Trails. I will remember it as the year we built the new Boathouse Pavilion. This is the first major improvement we have made to the Dunning Lake beach area in decades. This project was several years in the making and it was so nice to see all the planning and discussions come to fruition. We spent a lot of time around this new building listening to members and watching how it was used. It is not every day that you hit a homerun, but I believe in this case we most certainly did. Members loved the additional picnic space, community grille area, and of course the incredible view. The improved boat rental area with new lifejackets, watercraft, and computerized rental system was a long overdue improvement. The new training area, locker, and storage areas were also welcomed by our staff. On behalf of everyone who was able to enjoy this new facility, I want to thank the donors, volunteers, and staff who worked so hard to make it happen!
Looking to next year, we plan to continue making improvements to the facility with several additional projects. At Dunning Lake, we will be adding two smaller pavilions at the lifeguard and WSI areas. These will provide much needed shade for our staff as well as easily identifiable locations for first aid and lessons. We have also purchased a new larger beach cleaner attachment for our Bobcat that will reduce the time it takes to clean the beach and improve the overall sand conditions. In the spring, we plan to overhaul our tennis and basketball courts. These facilities are over 20 years old and are showing their age. During this time, we have seen a decline in tennis usage and an increased interest in pickleball. As a result, we plan to repurpose two of the tennis courts. One will be made into three permanent pickle ball courts and the other relined for a street hockey area for camp. The first two tennis courts will remain. All the cracks in these courts will be repaired, resealed, and lined. We also plan to do the same thing to all our basketball courts. Next fall we will be replacing our entire fleet of cross country skis. If you are looking for a good deal on skis, we will be holding a sale on April 7th of 2018, details of the sale can be found on page 7.
Looking forward to winter, we are always hopeful to enjoy cold weather activities. With any luck, we will be ice skating, skiing, and sledding this year. There is nothing more enjoyable than gliding across Walton Pond or getting a thrill sliding down the Sportsplex Hill. It is also wonderful to ski through freshly groomed trails at our Cross-Country Ski Center. If Mother Nature does not cooperate, there are other activities available to you, and we hope you take full advantage of all we have to offer.
On behalf of the entire Board and staff, I would like to wish each of you and your families a safe and joyous holiday season. If you have any suggestions or questions, please do not hesitate to contact me.
Sincerely,Sincerely,
Scott Brown, CPRPExecutive Director

GENERAL INFORMATION
Philanthropy is being generous with your hard-earned money. Where and what you donate is personal and by extension, reveals what you value. We are living in turbulent times. Some of you are struggling relent-lessly, most of us are hanging on, but way too close
for comfort, while others have adequate assets that are tied up in unstable markets. No-one has it made, but we all do what we can. There are hundreds of you that value Winding Trails’ devotion to children, families and nature and give a gift in addition to your annual dues. For this, we are eternally grate-ful. The following is a look at how Winding Trails handles fundraising and where those gifts are used.
Winding Trails is very lucky to have a long history of generous donors. In 1955, Winding Trails received non-profit status and bought the property from Avon Old Farms School. The Hartford Foundation for Public Giving contributed to that purchase. Back then, The Board of Directors would per-sonally sponsor children to attend camp whose families had fallen on hard times. Over time, local businesses and a few
generous donors kept the practice of providing camperships to struggling families.
In 2006, Winding Trails consolidated its fundraising into the Trails Fund and formed a Development committee under the supervision of the Board to coordinate fundraising and ensure the money is used to further our mission. Winding Trails does a single formal solicitation in the form of a Trails Fund letter to our members in mid-March. It is intentionally low-key because you have enough on your plate without an endless stream of donation requests. Many of you believe that Winding Trails is providing space, opportunity and value to your life, and will give. If you are not presently donating, we hope you will look closer to see the good work we are doing for our children’s future and change your mind.
The Trails Fund is also supported through several special events each year. They include our Drive “fore” Camp Golf Tournament, the Fat Tire Mountain Bike Race, Slime the Counselor, Hartford Women’s Marathon, Nature's Open House, and the Acoustic Festival. These events attract hun-

dreds of participants and the proceeds help our Trails Fund. We also do grant writing and reach out to Foundations and
Trusts to help support Winding Trails. These include; Hartford Foundation for Public Giving, Ellen J. Goldfarb Memorial Charitable Trust, Hartford Wolfpack Community Foundation, Highland Park Families Foundation, Alexander P. Franklin Foundation, as well as the Exchange Club of Farmington and the Farmington Community Chest. We humbly thank all of you for your support.
The Trails Fund supports four causes - campership, environ-mental and educational initiatives, Dunning Lake improvements, and general support. We cannot thank everyone enough for their support of this organization and these causes.
This past fiscal year 16/17 our Trails Fund raised $112,486 from 342 donors. We raised an additional $14,518 from our special events and received a very generous $175,000 grant from the Hartford Foundation for Public Giving. There was an additional $3,475 not spent this year and will be carried over for last year. The Development Committee makes recom-mendations on how these donations are spent and the Board of Directors then approves these expenditures. The following is the breakdown of how this past year’s monies were spent or plan to be spent in 2018.
CAMPERSHIP: n $32,545 was used to send 73 underprivileged kids to camp
in 2017n $4,341 will be carried over and used in 2018

Winding Trails would like to thank the hundreds of families, foundations, and businesses that support our organization and the work we do. A full list of our top donors can be seen on our website at https://www.windingtrails.org/about-us/trails-fund/
CAMP CORNERWe have already begun the plan-
ning for 2018 and talking about how we can continue to make Winding Trails Summer Day Camp the best it can be. As we prepare for another summer, we always look back at the previous summer by surveying our camp families and our camp staff to find areas we can improve upon. We feel feedback is very important and it helps us continue to improve as an organization. We take the feedback and meet as a leadership team to fully evaluate our summer. We have a wonderful leadership team that is part of our summer day camp and while, to some, it may only be a summer job they do go above and beyond as we meet about once a month to start the planning process all over again.
We are also very thankful for our counseling staff at Winding Trails as they are the ones that help guide campers on their summer journey through camp. They are an impor-tant piece to the puzzle of helping campers have an enjoyable summer experience by trying new things and making new friends. Friendships are a big part of the summer experience and our campers look forward to each summer coming back and seeing their summer friends. The same thing happens for our counselors each year when they come back to camp after a long school year and they see their summer camp family. It is one of my favorite days during the first day of our staff training to see counselors reconnecting with friends they may not have seen for 8 or 9 months. It is what makes camp special and it translates to our campers as well.
The gift of camp is something special and at Winding Trails we strive to give a unique gift to every camper each summer and memories that will last a lifetime.
Enrollment for the summer of 2018 is taking place now. Please remember that we filled in many groups very early last year, so do not miss out on your chance to be a part of this very popular program! We look forward to seeing your child at camp in 2018.

WINTER SURVIVAL METHODS:
CACHES& HUDDLING
Imagine yourself as a small active winter mammal… let’s say a deer mouse or white-footed mouse. These are native rodents in Connecticut that can occupy similar wild habitats from grassland to forest; though the white-footed mouse prefers more bushy or wooded areas. In size, they
are about the same body length with a weight between 10 to 25 grams dependent on their age… about 4 to 10 pennies.
They are similar in most manners, such as abilities, food preferences and reproduction rates. As agile climb-ers, strong swimmers, and being able to f latten out their bodies to fit through tiny openings, they are found at every level within their habitats. As omnivore consumers, their food sources include a variety of seeds, fruits, arthropods, leaves, and fungi. Both exhibit prolific reproduction cycles which allows them to survive since they are a food source for a variety of animals such as birds of prey, snakes, larger mam-mals, and the occasional bullfrog.
Yet, they are different in their activity times which allows them to fit perfectly together in the habitats that they share. White-footed mice are the “early birds” of the night being active from 7 p.m. to 1 a.m. Deer mice pick up the next work shift from 1 a.m. and continue to 7 a.m.
So, now that we understand these mice as living things, let’s consider how they survive our New England winter. They are active organisms and do not hibernate the winter away. During severe weather, they can enter a state of torpor that is described as a short period of decreased physical activity with a reduction of body temperature and metabolic rate… not a true hibernation.
Because of a mouse’s size, they need to feed and stay warm by using different survival strategy than a large active mammal, such as a white-tailed deer, would take.
Deer eat heavily during the late summer and fall to add on 20 to 30% more weight in the form of fat. This fat provides a reserve during times that access to grasses, twigs, and bark are limited. Mice are not able to add weight to their body by eat-ing heavily so they cache or hide food away throughout their territory under logs, in crevices, hollow trees, and other spaces. It is said, in some research articles, that a cache of up to three and a half quarts of stored food has been found.
Deer with their large body size has a low surface-to-mass ratio. This surface-to-mass ratio is defined as the outside surface area of the skin to the inter-nal body mass of an animal. By having this low ratio, deer move around and conserve their energy. During severe weather, they
will lie on the ground in dense areas of hemlock or mountain laurel to reduce their exposure to wind which would wick away heat from their body or they will allow snow to cover their body which acts as a blanket.
Mice, due to their small size, have a high surface-to-mass ratio which causes them to lose a great deal of energy. To get around this energy loss, they employ an external physical strategy. They build nests containing cattail down, milkweed silk, moss, grasses, and feathers, which have great insulating factors, and invite relatives to huddle with them. During the process of huddling, the mice overlap their bodies which causes less of their individual body surface to be exposed and increases their overall body mass. Together, they create a lower surface-to-mass ratio.
Next time you spot a mouse outside, reflect on their survival skills and be thankful that we have our modern methods of keeping warm during the winter.

NATURE'S SECRETS ON THE WEEKEND This winter, join Miss Judy for a fun weekend afternoon
of learning something new about the great outdoors. The program format is an indoor introduction about the day’s topic followed by a hands-on outdoor activity to try out what you learned. Dress in layers so you can be comfortable during the indoor introduction and warm enough for the outdoor activity.
The Saturday and Sunday programs will be based on the actual weather that weekend and what is happening nature wise on property. Come prepared to explore and have fun. If we have snow, we’ll be doing tracking or building snow forts. If we have safe ice, we’ll be ice fishing or checking on wood duck boxes. If we have neither, we’ll be exploring the forest to look at trees or early spring flowers. As always, we hope to do at least one program on maple sugaring. Looking forward to an exciting winter season! Registration is required 3 days before the date of the event.

16 WINTER NEWSLETTER
FAMILY PROGRAMS
EXPLORE THE NIGHT WALKS Miss Judy invites you to bring your friends and family for
a fun night of learning about the great outdoors. The general format includes an inside introduction to the evening program, an outside walk, a warm fire with S’mores or something baked in the fire, a short walk outside to check the night sky, and of course family socializing with other night explorers. Dress in layers for the weather conditions that day – it can get very cold on these winter nights.
Because of unknown winter conditions, the outside walk format will vary based on snow and ice conditions during January and February. Hopefully we will include some snowshoeing and ice skating each evening. In March, we will explore the wetlands and forest for the sounds of spring peepers and wood frogs along with glimpses of early spring plants. Registration is required 3 days before the date of the event.
