Balancing Emotions During the Holiday Season

Yet, for those of us who have lost a loved one to impaired driving, or whose lives have changed forever due to injury, the holidays can be a mixture of happiness and sadness.

I love this time of year with my family, as we get together to celebrate, to share and to laugh with one another.

But my family and I also struggle during the holidays. We – as so many victims and survivors of impaired driving do – feel a sadness and heaviness. My stepson Nicholas is not here to join in the holiday parties, to open gifts or to share Christmas dinner. We feel his loss deeply.

I know that many of you struggle with similar feelings. We all need to understand that is okay. We can be both happy to celebrate the holidays with our loved ones, and inconsolably sad that one of those loved ones is not here with us, or that our futures have been forever changed by an impaired driving crash.

I know how hard it is to reconcile those feelings. Nothing can take away our loss. But I do hope you are able to find some comfort, as I do, in the fact that we are not alone in these conflicted feelings and experiences. Others share your challenges and understand your feelings.

Please know that support is available. If you do need someone to talk to about how you’re coping, please reach out to our Victim Services:

You will also find some useful information in our Holidays and Hope brochure. It offers information, tips and strategies that may help you during this holiday season. You can download a copy of the brochure from the Victim Services section at madd.ca.

From my home to yours, I wish you peace, hope and comfort this holiday season.

IN THE NEWS

LCBO Is ‘Giving Back In Our Community’ Throughout December, Ontario residents are supporting MADD Canada’s education programs and victim/survivor support efforts by making a donation at any of the more than 660 LCBO stores. The Giving Back In Our Community program raises funds for MADD Canada and four regional children’s hospitals around the province. LCBO customer service representatives invite patrons to add a $2, $5 or $10 donation to their purchase. Donation boxes for MADD Canada will be also displayed at LCBO checkout counters until December 31.

The funds raised support the production and delivery of MADD Canada’s School Assembly Program for middle and high schools and the SmartWheels program for elementary schools. Both programs educate students about the effects of alcohol and drugs and the risk of driving impaired. The funds also enable MADD Canada to conduct victim outreach and offer support services to Ontario residents who have been impacted by impaired driving.

“Our partnership with MADD Canada to help to stop impaired driving and to support those affected is an important way that we work to make a difference in the lives of children and youth across Ontario,” said George Soleas, President and CEO, LCBO. “Last year, through our Giving Back in Our Community campaign, we raised over $2.4 million for MADD Canada, supporting not only victim services, but initiatives like the School Assembly Program and the newly-launched SmartWheels mobile RV classroom, both of which raise awareness among students about the risks and consequences of impaired driving.”

Motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death

among teens and young adults, and alcohol and/or drugs are involved in more than half of those crashes. SmartWheels and the School Assembly Program enable MADD Canada to open a dialogue with young people before they begin driving or are faced with decisions about drug or alcohol use, and continue the conversation right through high school.

“With the incredible support we receive from LCBO, its staff and its customers, MADD Canada’s youth education programming offers powerful and ongoing education about the risks of impaired driving to students from Grades 4 all the way to Grade 12,” said Patricia Hynes-Coates, MADD Canada’s National President.

Thanks to LCBO’s Giving Back in Our Community campaign, SmartWheels and the School Assembly Program can be delivered throughout Ontario at no cost whatsoever to the schools or the students.

SmartWheels Visits Ontario Schools

MADD Canada’s SmartWheels mobile classroom is stirring up lots of excitement as it visits Ontario schools. The 42-foot RV –outfitted with a large projection screen, individual tablets and virtual reality goggles – offers a fully interactive education program for students in Grades 4 to 6 as they learn about the dangers associated with alcohol or drug use and driving.

SmartWheels was officially launched in mid-November with a visit to students at Second Street Junior Middle School in Etobicoke, Ontario. Joining MADD Canada for the special event were: Ontario Minister of Transportation, The Honourable Steven Del Duca; Jennifer Bell, LCBO Executive Director, Communications & Corporate Social Responsibility; and Karyn Toon, Director Corporate Relations, Allstate Insurance Company of Canada.

SmartWheels builds upon MADD Canada’s previous educational programming for elementary students, adding custom content, innovative technology and unique learning opportunities in a fully interactive format. It also complements the School Assembly Program for grades 7-12. MADD Canada can now provide powerful and ongoing education about the risks and consequences of alcohol, drugs and impaired driving to students from Grade 4 all the way through to Grade 12.

The SmartWheels program is generously supported by Organizational Sponsors: the LCBO, the Ontario Ministry of Transportation and Allstate Insurance Company of Canada, and In-Kind Partner: Overdrive (Design) Limited.

Students at Second Street Junior Middle School in Etobicoke welcomed Ontario Minister of Transportation Steven Del Duca, MADD Canada National President Patricia Hynes-Coates, Allstate Canada Director of Corporate Relations Karyn Toon, and LCBO Executive Director of Communications and Corporate Social Responsibility Jennifer Bell for a demonstration of SmartWheels.

30 Years of Project Red Ribbon and 30 Years of Partnership with Allstate CanadaIn 1988, MADD Canada introduced the Project Red Ribbon campaign to help promote sober driving during the holiday season. It was in that same year that Allstate Insurance Company of Canada signed on as a partner with MADD Canada, joining the effort to raise awareness of the threat impaired driving poses to all Canadians.

IN THE NEWS

Thirty years later, Project Red Ribbon and the partnership between Allstate Canada and MADD Canada remains strong.

This year saw Allstate Canada continue to expand their involvement in helping to further advance Project Red Ribbon. On November 2nd, at the campaign’s national launch on Parliament Hill, Ryan Michel, Allstate Canada’s President and CEO, joined MADD Canada National President Patricia Hynes-Coates, Jody Wilson-Raybould, Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada, Ralph Goodale, Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness, and countless members of emergency service teams to address the importance of eliminating impaired driving from our communities.

Allstate agents and employees all over the country followed suit, representing Allstate Canada at Project Red Ribbon events in Edmonton, North Bay, Halifax, Barrie, Fredericton, Ottawa, Toronto, Timmins, and Calgary, just to name a few. And, in Milton, the Allstate Canada team went one step further and hosted the Project Red Ribbon event at their agency!

But this partnership doesn’t end there. In addition to the ongoing sponsorship and growing participation in Project Red Ribbon over the years, Allstate Canada has also been a sponsor of countless other projects, including, but not limited to, the School Assembly Program, Strides for Change, and the ever-evolving Campaign 911.

The partnership continues to evolve. This year, MADD Canada was thrilled to have Allstate Canada come on board in support of our newest initiative, SmartWheels, which provides a unique and interactive way to educate elementary students through a medium that resonates with

them. By teaching children about the dangers of impaired driving at such a young age, our hope is to give them the tools to they need to make smart choices that will not only keep them safe, but their communities as well.

MADD Canada looks forward to continuing our partnership with Allstate Canada, and working together to eradicate impaired driving.

IN THE NEWS

Using cannabis doubles an individual’s chances of getting into a crash.1 Unfortunately, even with this statistic, 1 in 4 cannabis users in Canada reported operating a vehicle while under the influence of drugs, placing themselves and the public at risk.2

With the impending legalization of cannabis in Canada, changes to impaired driving laws are being made to prepare for drivers impaired by marijuana. Legislation currently making its way through the House of Commons and the Senate will, if passed, establish driving limits for cannabis and other drugs, and authorize police to use roadside oral fluid tests to detect drugged drivers.

Alcohol Countermeasure Systems (ACS) Corp., a proud Gold Technology Sponsor of MADD Canada and a world leader in innovative technologies to promote road safety, distributes DrugWipe®, an advanced line of non-invasive drug screening devices that can provide accurate results in only 5 minutes. DrugWipe® testers can detect drugs in saliva, sweat and on all surfaces, and have the ability to test for a combination of up to seven drug groups including: cannabis, opiates, cocaine, amphetamine, methamphetamines, benzodiazepines and ketamine.

DrugWipe®, and other oral fluid devices, were part of a pilot study conducted by the RCMP and municipal and provincial law enforcement agencies in early 2017 to detect marijuana and other common recreational drugs at roadside checkpoints. Some 1,141 samples were collected across Canada, and the devices were found to be accurate and specific to the type of drugs that were detected. The pilot study results have shown that oral fluid

testing devices can play an integral part in the fight against drugged driving in Canada.

DrugWipe® devices have been in used in Australia for over 15 years due to their effectiveness in detecting drugs through oral fluid.

“The new freedom of legalized marijuana should be used and managed responsibly. DrugWipe is not manufactured and distributed to get people into trouble; the product line and its advanced drug testing technology is intended to act as a deterrent to driving impaired and to help save lives by preventing a dangerous situation before it occurs”, says Felix J.E. Comeau, CEO of ACS.

Roadside Sign Program Honours Saskatchewan Victims of Impaired DrivingIn partnership with MADD Canada, the Province of Saskatchewan has established a new roadside memorial sign program to honour victims of impaired driving.

Signs honouring Jordan and Chanda Van de Vorst and their two children, Kamryn, 5, and Miguire, 2, were installed on Highway 11 near Wanusekewin Rd. in Saskatoon in August. The family was killed in an impaired driving crash in January, 2016.

Signs honouring Danille Kerpan were installed on Townline Road near Bladworth in October. Danille was killed in an impaired driving crash in October, 2014.

The signs, which include the victims’ names and MADD Canada’s red ribbon image, honour their memories and serve as a powerful reminder to motorists about the tragic impact of impaired driving.

“One person’s choice to drive impaired can destroy a family,” said MADD Canada National President Patricia Hynes-Coates. “These roadside memorials offer a permanent tribute to their memories. We hope people see these signs, reflect on these terrible tragedies and vow to never drive impaired.”

MADD Canada thanks the victims’ families for their strength, and the Government of Saskatchewan for its support of victims and commitment to reducing impaired driving.

MADD Canada has worked with the governments of Ontario, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island, to establish memorial sign programs, and is currently talking to the Government of Alberta about establishing a program in that province.

Uber Raises Awareness and Funds For MADD CanadaWith support from Uber Canada, MADD Canada has produced a powerful new television public service announcement (PSA) which depicts some of the life events a mom will miss when a child is lost due to impaired driving. Titled Motherhood, the PSA conveys how no mom should ever have motherhood taken away through impaired driving, and encourages viewers to consider how their impaired driving can have a lasting effect on those closest to them. The new PSA can be viewed at madd.ca.

The PSA was launched in late November, around the same time as Uber undertook an exciting new fundraising campaign on MADD Canada’s behalf. The campaign takes place on Saturday nights throughout

December, between the hours of 11 p.m. and 4 a.m. – one of the busiest times for Uber. Anytime a driver receives a “Compliment” badge from a rider through the Uber app, Uber will donate $1 to MADD Canada, to a maximum of $100,000.

The holiday fundraising and awareness initiative is part of a long-term partnership between MADD Canada and Uber Canada announced in February 2017 with a common mandate to drive awareness and raise funds to help prevent impaired driving.

MADD Edmonton held a very successful Project Red Ribbon campaign launch on November 3 at Edmonton Police Headquarters. Mayor Don Iveson started the event with a proclamation declaring November and December as Project Red Ribbon months in the City of Edmonton. Representatives from Edmonton Police Service, Edmonton Fire and Rescue Service, RCMP, AHS EMS, Allstate Canada, and Westcan-RTL, as well as Allison Tatham, addressed the more than 60 guests in attendance. The Chapter also presented 6 trophies from police officers who had received Cpl. Cummings Awards earlier this year for all their hard work and dedication in taking impaired drivers off the roads. Ribbons were tied on the various police, fire and EMS vehicles on site. Later that evening, the High Level Bridge was lit up in red in honour of Project Red Ribbon. Thanks to all the wonderful volunteers that helped make the event possible, and to Strathcona Excavating Inc. for bringing the hydrovac truck to display.

MADD Lethbridge kicked off its Project Red Ribbon campaign on October 26 in Coaldale with Mayor Kim Craig, Fire Chief Kevin McKeown and RCMP Staff Sgt. Glenn Henry.  The City of Lethbridge City Hall was lit up with red lights from dusk until dawn on the evening of November 2. Since the launch, the Chapter has been sharing red ribbons far and wide, and forging partnerships with local businesses and supporters to further promote the sober driving message. They have arranged with Chapters Indigo Book Store to include a Project Red Ribbon bookmark with each purchase over the holiday season. Boston Pizza’s three locations in Lethbridge are displaying the Project Red Ribbon coin boxes and red ribbon window decals. Thanks to everyone for their incredible support.

MADD Fort Simpson spent a weekend in September distributing MADD Canada posters to various pubs, restaurants and bars in Yellowknife and other communities. It was a wonderful way to meet local business owners, share the sober driving message and enlist support in the effort to keep roads safe.

MADD Toronto Chapter is creating some mobile awareness this holiday season with the Toronto Transit Commission (TTC). Bus ads showing the photos of seven victims of impaired driving have been placed on city buses. The campaign will run the entire month of December. A special thank you to the families who shared their stories and to the TTC. Prior to the mobile launch, the families had an opportunity to visit the TTC garage and see the bus boards. In November, the Chapter created Project Red Ribbon buzz at various TTC stations from November 27 – 30. Volunteers collected donations and handed out hundreds of red ribbons to commuters during the morning and afternoon rush hours.

There’s been amazing support for Project Red Ribbon in the Lanaudière region! Thanks to the dedication of MADD Lanaudière Community Leader Sylvie Bélanger, the region was illuminated in red to promote the campaign. For the occasion, Joliette, Notre-Dame des Prairies, Rawdon, Saint-Lin Laurentides and Saint-Cuthbert dressed up in red and highlighted various sites to support Project Red Ribbon. Other municipalities shared the awareness message on electronic road signs and through communications with their citizens. A heartfelt thank you to all for an extraordinary Project Red Ribbon campaign.

MADD Beauce and MADD Ville de Quebec decided to meet with their community on the same weekend to promote Project Red Ribbon, start the holiday celebrations and sell mittens! MADD Beauce’s booth was installed in Carrefour Saint-Georges mall for the first time while MADD Ville de Quebec was set up in Promenades Beauport. Both booths were a great success and volunteers were encouraged to keep up the good work by residents who gave supportive words and donations in support of MADD Canada programs in their regions.

MADD Chapters in Prince Edward Island held the Project Red Ribbon provincial launch at the Alberton RCMP Detachment. Dignitaries in attendance included RCMP Staff Sergeant Major Hank Polley and MLA Pat Murphy representing Transportation Minister Paula Biggar. Coinciding with the ribbon cutting and police checkpoints was the launch of the Variable Message Sign Campaign which runs from November 1 to January 1. A New Start For A Fan FavouriteIf you’re searching the shelves at your favourite stores this holiday season for the MADD Virgin Wines and MADD Craft lager that you’ve come to love, you are in for a new treat.

Hill Street Beverage Company, a long-time partner and proud supporter of MADD Canada, has recently undergone some major changes. In addition to offering a whole new line of alcohol-free wines and beers, they have undergone a brand transition.

This holiday season, look for the bright new packaging of Vintense, Vin (Zero) and Designated Draft beer.  These products offer greater variety and will quickly become your new favourites. And, as winners of the international competitions for the world’s best tasting products, they have some impressive recommendations.

Hill Street has a new way for you to enjoy these great products too! They’ve launched an online club for you to shop at home and have a carefully curated collection of alcohol-free beers and wines sent directly to your door. By becoming a subscriber, your purchase automatically supports MADD Canada, and you save up to 35% off retail prices.

As you enjoy these new products, remember that for every can and bottle that Hill Street Beverage Company sells, 10% of gross profits are donated to MADD Canada to help stop impaired driving and to support the victims of this violent crime.

A Labour Of Love To MADD Canada From The Henman FamilyWhen Pat Henman and her daughter, Maia Vezina, were hit by an impaired driver in 2013, their lives were changed forever. Both suffered life-threatening injuries and there are many challenges every day as a result.

MADD Canada supported Pat, Maia and their family with victim support and they were able to attend MADD Canada’s National Conference for Victims of Impaired Driving to help in their healing.

Both Pat and Maia have since shared their stories with other impaired driving victims and survivors in hopes of providing healing and support to others while also educating Canadians about the consequences of impaired driving. They know that impaired driving shatters lives and they want to do all they can to make sure the pain and suffering they endured doesn’t happen to anyone else.

Last year, when Pat and her nine siblings decided to create a family CD of music as a way of healing and re-connecting with each other, it was only natural that they would decide to support MADD Canada. All of the net proceeds from CD sales are being donated to MADD Canada. The family has two concerts being planned for the Halifax, NS area in 2018, and all of the net proceeds from CD sales at those concerts will be donated to MADD Halifax Regional Chapter.

To purchase a CD and support MADD Canada, click here or visit www.cdbaby.com and search “Edge of Heaven” by the Henman Family.
